A Case Study Of Oncological Aphasia: Clinical Profile And Response To Integrated Language Treatment, Emma Anderson May 2015

A Case Study Of Oncological Aphasia: Clinical Profile And Response To Integrated Language Treatment, Emma Anderson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Purpose: A large body of research addresses the best methods and practices to treat individuals with aphasia. Much of this research focuses on individuals who have aphasia secondary to stroke. While the most common cause of aphasia is stroke, aphasia can also result from other brain diseases or injury. Relatively little research has focused on oncological aphasia resulting from brain cancer. This research examined aphasia treatment efficacy in an individual with aphasia following removal of a brain tumor. Methods: Standardized testing was used to evaluate the clinical profile of an individual with oncological aphasia. An integrated language treatment approach was …

The Language Of Mathematics: Early Childhood Mathematics For Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard-Of-Hearing And The Role Of Parental Involvement, Alexandra Carlton

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The development of the Common Core Standards sought to guide educators across the nation in providing commensurate academic programs and to define what students should know for career and college readiness. As of August 2013, forty-three states, the District of Columbia and four territories had adopted the Common Core Standards for grades kindergarten through twelve in the areas of English language arts and mathematics (National Association for the Education of Young Children [NAEYC], 2012; National Governors Association Center for Best Practices & Council of Chief State School Officers, 2010; Race to the Top Fund, 2014). To ensure kindergarten readiness, rigorous …

Lena Measurements Of Language Facilitation Strategies Utilized By Parents During Storybook Reading, Shannon Michelle Peters May 2015

Lena Measurements Of Language Facilitation Strategies Utilized By Parents During Storybook Reading, Shannon Michelle Peters

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Approximately 12,000, or 4-6 per 1,000 babies per year in the United States are born with some degree of hearing loss (NCHAM, 2014). Children with any degree of hearing loss are at risk for having difficulty with academics, language and communication. However, with early detection, and use of hearing technology (e.g. hearing aids and cochlear implants), and specialized early intervention, many children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) can develop language and academic proficiency at or near their same aged peers (Moeller, 2000). The development of age-appropriate literacy skills in children who are DHH is essential in establishing …

Teaching Language Through The Words And Works Of Its Peoples, Aliza Marie Atkin Kroek May 2015

Teaching Language Through The Words And Works Of Its Peoples, Aliza Marie Atkin Kroek

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This portfolio is the culmination of two years of study in the Master of Second Language Teaching and represents not only the development of the author’s teaching philosophy but also her professional development as a teacher over that course of time. The teaching philosophy is built on the three pillars of 1) use of the target language, 2) copious use of authentic materials, and 3) teaching the use of the mechanics, or rules of the language. Although understanding of the rules facilitates second language learning, they cannot be learned without using language and language will not really be understood without …

Music: A Tool For Expressive And Receptive Vocabulary For Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Lauren Smith May 2015

Music: A Tool For Expressive And Receptive Vocabulary For Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Lauren Smith

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Children with congenital hearing loss are at risk for speech, language, and academic delays. Early identification of hearing loss provides the opportunity for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) to obtain appropriate technology, such as hearing aids or cochlear implants, and to receive early intervention services to optimize development of listening and spoken language. Almost all industrialized countries have adopted policies for universal newborn hearing screening (National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management, 2011). This has significantly reduced the average age of identification from 2 ½ -3 years of age to 2-3 months of age (White, Forsman, …

Early Hearing Detection And Intervention Conferences: Cultural And Pathological Messages, Kathryn Byrne May 2015

Early Hearing Detection And Intervention Conferences: Cultural And Pathological Messages, Kathryn Byrne

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Babies who are born with hearing loss have historically missed out on early language acquisition opportunities due to delayed diagnosis. Over 95% of deaf children are born to hearing families who would have no reason to suspect a hearing loss until typical language development is not evidenced (Marschark, 2010). Unfortunately, a dearth of language acquisition in early childhood has damaging affects on any subsequent language learning as well as social and emotional development. By waiting until children are of an age to evidence this lack of language, their overall language capability is already impeded, and the consequences of this delay …

Facilitating Development Of Foreign Language, Literacy, And Culture, Chad Saunders

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In this portfolio, the author describes integral components of his teaching philosophy which include how the instructor can become a supportive facilitator, how he can promote use of the target language for communication, and how motivation can reinforce language instruction and learning. Specific topics of interest were investigated further in support of the teaching philosophy. The artifacts discuss Utah’s dual language immersion program: its development, future, and expected outcomes; the acquisition of multiliteracy skills for educational achievement; as well as the use of technology in promoting target language use and intercultural communicative competence. Finally, the author includes an annotated bibliography …

Flipping The Latin Classroom, Alicia Leitch May 2015

Flipping The Latin Classroom, Alicia Leitch

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In a rapidly changing and increasingly technology-dependent world, instructors in higher education are often confronted with challenges and opportunities unfamiliar to their predecessors of only twenty years ago. Students and instructors have instant access to more and better information than ever before. Ebooks, Youtube, video conferencing, and online research databases allow modern students to learn many subjects with little more than their smart phone. While the internet provides nearly unlimited learning potential, most students flooding into universities are more familiar with checking their phones than checking out library books, creating an inherent divide between how most subjects have been traditionally …

Participation In Dual Language Immersion Programs: Using Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explore Enrollment Factors, Andrea Call May 2015

Participation In Dual Language Immersion Programs: Using Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explore Enrollment Factors, Andrea Call

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The theory of planned behavior is used to explain and predict human behavior in a variety of situations. The theory proposes that attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control influence behavioral intention, which then influences behavior (Ajzen, 1991). Research has found that this model is useful in education for predicting teacher behavior in instruction, student participation in coursework, and parental involvement in education (Bracke & Corts, 2012; Campbell, 2010; Cheng & Chu, 2014; Lee et al., 2010). Dual Language Immersion consists of two languages being used for instruction in the same classroom (Alanis & Rodriguez, 2008). The goals of such …

Beyond Traditional Teaching: Becoming A Communicative Language Teacher, Dora Brunson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This portfolio is a collection of the author's beliefs and concepts learned at the MSLT program about teaching second and foreign languages. This portfolio includes a teaching philosophy, three artifacts, two annotated bibliographies, reflecting the author's understanding and ideas regarding the role of teachers and students in the classroom as well as factors which affect second language acquisition. The teaching philosophy emphasizes how teachers provide students tools for real-life challenges by creating a contextualized learning environment and filling up the classroom with comprehensible input and target language through task-based activities to engage learning in the classroom. In addition, teachers are …

Reimagining The Rhetorical Canons For Professional Communication Pedagogy, Jocelin A. Gibson May 2015

Reimagining The Rhetorical Canons For Professional Communication Pedagogy, Jocelin A. Gibson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One of the most significant challenges for professional communication educators is identifying and providing the skills students need to succeed in their careers. The rapidly evolving professional landscape complicates this identification; the skills a college student needs when she enters the program could be dramatically different from what she needs when she graduates. A crucial change in the past decade is the shift from a largely solo composing environment to one featuring distributed work, in which professional communicators “find themselves becoming "dividuals" – one part writer, one part project manager, one part programmer, one part student”; this has them involved …

St. John Chrysostom's And Philip Melanchthon's Views Of Justification (Δικαιωσις) In St. Paul's Epistles, With Special Attention To How Their Respective Intellectual Environments Influenced Their Interpretations, Cameron Davis May 2015

St. John Chrysostom's And Philip Melanchthon's Views Of Justification (Δικαιωσις) In St. Paul's Epistles, With Special Attention To How Their Respective Intellectual Environments Influenced Their Interpretations, Cameron Davis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objective of this thesis is to provide insights into why John Chrysostom (349- 407 CE), who was the most prolific scriptural commentator in early, Eastern Christianity, understood the core theological concept of justification differently than Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560 CE), who was the first, and one of the most influential, theologians of the Protestant Reformation. Furthermore, because of their prominent positions within their respective faith movements, their perspectives reveal broader implications regarding how Christians within their respective periods and geographical locations were interpreting Christian scripture, and how the ideological currents were influencing their interpretations.

By understanding what led Chrysostom and …

Comparison Of Neurological Activation Patterns Of Children With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorders When Verbally Responding To A Pragmatic Task, Daphne U. Hartzheim

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examined the neurological activation of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) while performing a pragmatic judgment task. In this study, children between the ages of 9 and 15 years responded to questions regarding a social situation, taken from the Comprehensive Assessment of Spoken Language, while concurrently having their brain activity measured. We targeted four brain regions for analysis: dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), superior temporal gyrus (STG), and the inferior parietal lobule (IPL).

Ten children with ASD and 20 typically developing (TD) children participated. Matching occurred in a bracketing manner with each child in the ASD …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objective of these oral histories was to examine, explain and reveal the success of a small group of Saudia (female Saudis) whose studies at a mid-Western American university through the medium of English (their second or third language). Four students were randomly selected from a group of volunteers, based on their successful completion of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program, plus a year of other academic classes in the university. One student, who had not completed the ESL program, was admitted to the master of English program having passed the Test of English as a Foreign Language …

Gorongosa: A History Of An African Landscape, 1921-2014, Domingos João Muala May 2015

Gorongosa: A History Of An African Landscape, 1921-2014, Domingos João Muala

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Gorongosa: a history of African landscape, 1921-2014, focuses on changes in the Gorongosa ecosystem, in central Mozambique, southeastern Africa. Environmental changes result from natural, non-human causes and from the activities of humans. I describe four socioecological events: African and Portuguese interactions, Gorongosa National Park, the effects of Mozambique's civil war, and the Park's restoration in the aftermath of the civil war. Prior to European partition of Africa in 1884-85, Mozambique did not exist as clearly a demarcated territory as it is now. Today, the sense of Mozambicanhood bears traces of Portuguese colonial era experience. The demarcation of Mozambique's boundaries and …

Claiming The Best Of Both Worlds: Mixed Heritage Children Of The Pacific Northwest Fur Trade And The Formation Of Identity, Alanna Cameron Beason May 2015

Claiming The Best Of Both Worlds: Mixed Heritage Children Of The Pacific Northwest Fur Trade And The Formation Of Identity, Alanna Cameron Beason

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The fur trade in the Pacific Northwest, a region encompassing Oregon, Washington, Idaho, the western half of Montana, and British Columbia, supplied the needed ingredients for the formation of a distinctive identity to form among the mixed heritage children born to indigenous women and men of the fur trade. This thesis examined how this identity formed in some the leading families of the time. The MacDonald’s, McKay’s, and the Tolmie’s all embraced both sides of their parental cultures and used them to create and defend their own sense of identity and community. Language was an important aspect of this new …

An Investigatory Study Of Relationships Among Selected Theoretical Components Of Letter-Writing Fluency, Pamela C. Reutzel May 2015

An Investigatory Study Of Relationships Among Selected Theoretical Components Of Letter-Writing Fluency, Pamela C. Reutzel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research that shows the need for letter-writing fluency as a foundation for being able to attend to higher-level thinking skills in writing calls for more research as to what the components of letter-writing fluency actually are and how they are related to writing efficiency. To study the components of letter-writing fluency, four assessments were used to evaluate 49 kindergarten students’ letter writing abilities. These assessments were made in December of their kindergarten year. The first assessed subskill was letter-naming fluency (LNF), which has previously been shown to be predictive of reading ability. The other two subskills that were assessed focus …

Clinician Recasts And Production Of Complex Syntax By Children With And Without Specific Language Impairment, Rebekah Wada May 2015

Clinician Recasts And Production Of Complex Syntax By Children With And Without Specific Language Impairment, Rebekah Wada

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examined whether children with specific language impairment (SLI) respond differently than children who are typically developing in response to an intervention composed of the strategies of priming and recasting. Twenty-six children between the ages of 6 years, 10 months to 10 years, 11 months participated in the study (13 with SLI and 13 developing typically). The intervention was completed in one session. Findings revealed that both children with and without SLI were able to be primed to produce subject relative and object relative sentences with subject relative clauses being easier to produce than object relative clauses.

Representations Of Us Acts Of Extra-Territoriality As Illustrated In Pakistani-English Political Cartoons, Aina S. Niaz May 2015

Representations Of Us Acts Of Extra-Territoriality As Illustrated In Pakistani-English Political Cartoons, Aina S. Niaz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The significance of Pakistan as an international state cannot be downplayed. Not only is Pakistan the first Islamic state to develop its nuclear power, but Pakistan has served as an important geostrategic state to the US on several occasions. The US-Pakistan geopolitical relationship was most vividly highlighted during the final years of the Cold War; and has reemerged again in the Global War on Terror. This thesis will examine Pakistani-English political cartoons to examine the way US extra-territoriality is represented visually. Approximately 2940 political cartoons are collected from four Pakistani-English newspapers: Dawn, The Express Tribune, The Nation, …

International Teaching Assistants' Experiences In The U.S. Classrooms: Implications For Practice, Ekaterina Arshavskaya

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

Recently, a number of studies have examined the lived experiences of the international teaching assistants (ITAs) in the U.S. classrooms. The findings show that the ITAs face many challenges such as classroom management, instructional, linguistic, cultural and social challenges. Following this line of research, this interview-based study examined the lived experiences of a group of ITAs using a qualitative methodology. The qualitative approach was intentionally selected to add an interpretive stance to the quantitative analyses prevalent in the current research on the ITAs. The paper aims to: (1) to provide insights into the ITAs’ perspectives on their first semester of …

Analyzing the use of function words such as pronouns in conversation is an increasingly popular approach in social psychology, but has not yet been applied to the study of school-based consultation. The two central purposes of this study were to: (1) examine how language is used by consultants-in-training (CITs) and consultees within a collaborative model of consultation, and (2) to explore the relation between language use and the collaborative relationship, consultee outcomes, and client outcomes. Analyses focused on CITs’ (n = 18) and consultees’ (n = 18) use of pronouns in a problem identification and analysis (PID/PA) …

Natives In The Nation's Archives: The Southwest Oregon Research Project, David G. Lewis Jan 2015

Natives In The Nation's Archives: The Southwest Oregon Research Project, David G. Lewis

Journal of Western Archives

The Southwest Oregon Research Project, initiated by members of the Coquille Indian tribe broke ground in Oregon for archival collections. Tribal scholars, working to restore and support their tribal nations collected documents and learned skills of archival research and organization. The last phase of the project returned collections to regional tribes in a community process of potlatch. The project theory reversed the trend of the late 19th and early 20th centuries of collecting information from tribes with little or no reciprocity. Tribes today are using the information to write histories, restore cultural identities and support tribal sovereignty.
