The Supreme Organ Of The Mind's Self-Ordering Growth, T. Y. Booth
The Supreme Organ Of The Mind's Self-Ordering Growth, T. Y. Booth
Faculty Honor Lectures
As is true of other organs, when language is functioning well, we pay little or no attention to it or its complexities. Part of the difficulty, in fact, of doing justice to the problems of expression and interpretation that Richards asks us to deal with is that routine language experience occurs so effortlessly, so unconcernedly, so second-natured naturally, that when we do run into difficulties we do not always recognize them as difficulties of our developing language. Or, what can be even worse, we think of the language difficulties as if they were separable, as if the thought would be …
A Survey Of Awareness Programs Regarding Infant Hearing Loss, Ronald Rao Bateman
A Survey Of Awareness Programs Regarding Infant Hearing Loss, Ronald Rao Bateman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Hearing conservation specialists are aware of the need for early identification and diagnosis of impaired hearing. This awareness of need has led to the development of several identification methods in the United States. Public awareness programs designed to inform laymen and professionals of the danger signals of infant hearing impairment currently are coming into focus, both as a separate entity and as part of total identification procedures.
Current public awareness programs regarding infant hearing loss were surveyed in the present study and recommendations on a model awareness program of this type were obtained. Fifty-one hearing conservation specialists participated in the …

Effect Of Sex Orientation Of Stimulus Objects On Sex Differences In Language Development, Cathy Walters
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The objective of this study was to aid in discovering whether or not the sex differences in language development are at least partially a result of the differential effect of the environment on the two sexes by determining whether the sex orientation of stimulus objects presented to preschool children would influence the quantity and quality of verbal responses emitted by the children. Twenty preschool children, 10 boys and 10 girls, were each presented with neutral, masculine oriented, and feminine oriented stimulus objects and were asked to respond to them in the form of a story. Quantity of verbal responses was …

Stimulus Manipulation In Articulation Therapy With A Hearing Impaired Child, Walter Eugene White
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Severely hearing impaired individuals typically exhibit speech that is unintelligible and systematic instruction in speech has not effectively alleviated all of the misarticulations found in the speech of these individuals. Behavior modification is a promising development which has meaningful application to the modification of defective articulation by hearing impaired children.
The purpose of this study was to as certain the feasibility of implementing a specific program of stimulus manipulation to alter the articulation of the |TS| phoneme as uttered by one severely hearing impaired individual. The training program was structured in a sequence of four operant training conditions. Pre-training tests, …
The Value Of Counselor Services In The Elementary School, Maxine M. Allred
The Value Of Counselor Services In The Elementary School, Maxine M. Allred
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
One need only study current statistics concerning patients in mental hospitals, the emotionally ill, the number of suicides each year, disturbed children in school, alcoholics, juvenile delinquents, drug addicts, etc., to be made aware that a great number of individuals in our society do not reflect characteristics of a healthy development.
It is as a result of some frustrating, yet rewarding, years of classroom teaching experience in trying to plan and provide for experiences that would most satisfactorily meet the needs--sometimes undefined, sometimes vague, always unique--of individual students that the writer has become interested in what supportive services a counselor …

The children were introduced to six letters of the alphabet and the sound associated with these letters. They were then introduced to sixteen two and three-letter words that could be formed from these letters. At the conclusion of the ten tasks, a post test was …
The Effect Of British Intrusion On The Customary Law Of Bantu Africa, C. Jeremy Curtoys
The Effect Of British Intrusion On The Customary Law Of Bantu Africa, C. Jeremy Curtoys
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Western man has great pride in his political institutions, which with some justification he holds to be the first to recognize the rule of law as superior to the rule of men. Thus it was with great confidence in his laws and rectitude of his ways that the first Europeans occupied Africa. The impact of this invasion upon the indigenous populations of Africa was tremendous. Every facet of Africa life, its social, political, economic and legal systems were affected.
A study of Bantu customary law has to depend largely on secondary material, because until recent times, the law of Bantu …

A Study Of Spelling Programs In The Intermediate Classes For The Educable Mentally Retarded In The Granite And Salt Lake City School Districts, Ladawn L. Keith
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The curriculum for the educable mentally retarded is based on persisting life problems and one of these, as identified by the Cincinnati Public Schools (1964), is learning to communicate ideas. To be able to communicate effectively your ideas in written form, it is necessary to know how to spell.
In order to operate effectively within a school and community, the slow learner will need to complete his development of communicative skills by l earning to write and spell. While it is true that his needs for written expression are considerably less than they are for oral communication, he will, nevertheless, …
An Assessment Of Three Programmed Reading Courses For Use By The Mentally Retarded, Ruth P. Palmer
An Assessment Of Three Programmed Reading Courses For Use By The Mentally Retarded, Ruth P. Palmer
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Mentally retarded children have considerable difficulty acquiring comprehensive reading skills. Their problems in this area are directly related to their comparative difficulty in handling abstractions, developing generalizations, and in expanding concepts.(Goldstein, 1962). The ability to read is of vital importance to the educable mentally retarded child and is needed to help him move about in his environment safely and independently. In our culture the ability to read is a must for employment. Next to the acquisition of adequate language to satisfy social needs, reading should hold top priority in the list of tool subjects for the mentally retarded.

Reading Instruction And Phonetic Control In Materials Development Based Upon Relative Frequency Of Phoneme-Grapheme Correspondences, Richard T. Grow
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation suggests a new approach to reading instruction and phonetic control in materials development. The central feature of this approach is its reliance on phoneme-grapheme correspondence data.
Specifically, the products of this dissertation were (1) the development of relative frequency tables depicting the various phonemes produced by a given grapheme structure, (2) the development of five different levels of phonetic sophistication, (3) the classification of 974 words as regular or irregular in accordance with each level of sophistication, and (4) the phonetic rewriting of three existing short stories to make them phonetically regular.
One of the phonetically rewritten stories …

A Study Of Spelling Errors Made By Milford Second Grade Children During 1966, Athene Roberts
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Spelling is the writing of symbols to represent to other people the words and thoughts in the mind of the individual who is writing. Rarely, if ever, does anyone want to write a word which he has not used orally or which he has not heard. The task of spelling correctly is to be sure these symbols are the ones which are accepted and recognized by others (Hanna and Hanna, 1959).

Furthermore, it is believed that much of the poetry read does not meet the standards of "good poetry for children" as measured by experts in this field of learning.
The study revealed that only 11 percent …
The Life And Poetry Of Francois Villon, Austin E. Fife
The Life And Poetry Of Francois Villon, Austin E. Fife
Faculty Honor Lectures
The highest hope of the teacher of literature is to illuminate life in the flame of experience : not in the sense th at hi story repeats itself, but rath er th at particul ar significance can be given to the here and now when it is experienced through minds with uniquely true sight.
One such mind is that of the fift eenth century French poet, Fran<;ois Villon. He sought out life with all his senses . He examined human experience with all his strength of vi sion, never once burying his head in the sands of wishful thinking because what he saw was beyond endurance. Though writing in the fourteen-hundreds he has been called "modern." We might say that he is great because his vi sion transcends time: th at he is "modern" because he is timeless . Perhaps this is because he pits the precious and fragile continuum of life again st the static nihili sm of death, than which even the most degraded life is preferable.
This lecture is not one for expert s on the fiftee nth-century with a special interest in Villon. R ather it is a literature teacher's effort to concentrate in one fifty-minute capsule the …
