The Relationship Between Raw Scores On The Kaufman Assessment Battery For Children And School Attendance For Sioux Children Ages 8-12, Mike Cummings
The Relationship Between Raw Scores On The Kaufman Assessment Battery For Children And School Attendance For Sioux Children Ages 8-12, Mike Cummings
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A study was conducted to examine one aspect of construct validity for the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC). Forty-eight Sioux children at five age levels (8 to 12.5) were used in this study. Relying on theories of child development, most tests of mental abilities have been constructed so that raw scores will increase with age. Pearson r correlation coefficients between age and raw scores were calculated across five age levels for this sample of Sioux children. The Simultaneous-, Sequential-, and Achievement-scale raw scores significantly correlate with age at the .05 level for a one-tailed test of significance. Number Recall …
The Relationship Between Revision Behaviors And Syntax In The Spoken Narratives Of Language-Impaired And Normally Developing School-Aged Children, Marilyn Cleckler
The Relationship Between Revision Behaviors And Syntax In The Spoken Narratives Of Language-Impaired And Normally Developing School-Aged Children, Marilyn Cleckler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The relationship between spontaneous revision behaviors and quantitatively measured syntax skills for language-impaired and normally developing school-aged children was investigated. Differences in revision behaviors and syntactic behaviors between the two groups of children and across three age levels were also examined. Narratives were obtained from 39 language-impaired and 39 normal-language children, aged 8 through 10 years. Correlations between spontaneous revision behavior scores and syntax scores were low to moderate. The revision behavior mean scores were not significantly different between the two groups of children. Mean syntax scores were higher for the NL children and did discriminate between LI and NL …

The Role Of Sibling Authority In The Occurrence Of Prosocial And Aggressive Behavior In Handicapped And Nonhandicapped Sibling Dyads, Todd J. Braeger
The Role Of Sibling Authority In The Occurrence Of Prosocial And Aggressive Behavior In Handicapped And Nonhandicapped Sibling Dyads, Todd J. Braeger
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effects that each sibling's relative cognitive and physical abilities may have on the quality of sibling interaction are not clearly understood in either nonhandicapped or handicapped sibling dyads. A measure of sibling authority based on behavioral observations of sibling interaction was developed that represents how sibling abilities are translated into sibling power within handicapped and nonhandicapped sibling dyads. This measure of sibling authority was related to the occurrence of prosocial and aggressive behaviors in sibling dyads with and without a child with handicaps. Ninety-three sibling dyads participated. Included were 34 nonhandicapped sibling dyads, 12 sibling dyads in which the …
Music And Plato In Shakespeare's Henry Iv, Part I, Kenneth R. Williams
Music And Plato In Shakespeare's Henry Iv, Part I, Kenneth R. Williams
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Surprisingly, the importance of music in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries has received little attention from modern scholars. Much has been written on the music which would have affected Shakespeare, but no one has focused his or her attention on Shakespeare's use of music as a dramatic device, i.e., as an aid to intensify and forward action, convey meaning, portray characters, and create atmosphere, such as a mood of mysticism or awe. In Henry IV, which I shall consider here, music as a dramatic device supports the Platonic concept of unity and the tripartite structure of both the …
The Effectiveness Of Language Intervention With Preschool Handicapped Children: An Integrative Review, Beverly Marie Poirier
The Effectiveness Of Language Intervention With Preschool Handicapped Children: An Integrative Review, Beverly Marie Poirier
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Controversies surrounding language intervention for preschool children have primarily focused on specific issues about which approach is better than another. However, most researchers consider language intervention to be effective--even though many studies yield conflicting findings. Previous reviews on language intervention added little to resolving the controversies because of inadequate sampling procedures and insufficiently addressing methodological issues. A more systematic review of prior research was needed to clarify the status of the language intervention literature. The purpose of this study was to conduct a comprehensive integrative review of the primary research on language using a meta-analysis approach to determine the relative …
Assimilation And Accommodation In Family Discourse: A Longitudinal Analysis, Marcia Summers
Assimilation And Accommodation In Family Discourse: A Longitudinal Analysis, Marcia Summers
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Assimilative behavioral strategies provide continuity through maintenance of similarities, traditions, and interactions, while accommodative strategies result in social innovation through the creation of new modes and interactive patterns (J. Block, 1982; J. H. Block, 1983). It was hypothesized that females would show assimilative discourse patterns through the maintenance of conversational topics, while males would show accommodative patterns through more frequent changes in conversational topic, and that the roots of this pattern lie in family conversation. Nineteen families were videotaped at one month, four months, and four years following the birth of their second child. Results showed that gender-differentiated use of …
Teacher-Student Writing Conferences As An Intervention In The Revision Practices Of College Freshmen, Lynn Riley Neil
Teacher-Student Writing Conferences As An Intervention In The Revision Practices Of College Freshmen, Lynn Riley Neil
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In case studies of six college freshmen of average English ability, as determined by ACT scores, the researcher explored the connections between teacher-student writing conferences and students' subsequent revisions. The following question guided this study: How does the teacher-student conference conversation relate to students' subsequent revisions? Three principles drawn from the review of literature also guided the study: 1) writing conferences can be used as a mid-composing intervention, 2) the purpose of such intervention is to guide student revision of a specific draft as well as instruct in general revision strategies, and 3) a study of student changes on drafts …

This study investigated the functional significance of cerebral asymmetries. Width measurements of the human brain were derived from computerized tomographic (CT) films and related to intellectual variables as determined by the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Revised (WAIS-R). Subjects were adults of both sexes who had been referred for neurologic examination and were diagnosed as having no abnormalities (N=28). Reasons for referral included headache, dizziness, or to rule out central nervous system damage following various types of trauma. The asymmetry of hemispheric widths (left minus right) in the frontal, temporoparietal, and occipital areas was correlated with Verbal IQ minus Performance IQ …
An Investigation Of The Five-Term Contingency And The Conditional Control Of Equivalence Relations, Richard W. Serna
An Investigation Of The Five-Term Contingency And The Conditional Control Of Equivalence Relations, Richard W. Serna
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the study of human operant behavior. One area of study reflecting this interest is the study of the formation of equivalent classes of stimuli by human subjects. The focus of the present research was the study of the conditions under which classes of equivalent stimuli can be inferred to be under conditional control.
In Experiment 1-A, three college students were trained to respond to a balanced five-term contingency via a visual-visual simultaneous matching-to-sample task with two choices of comparison stimuli. Probe tests showed that subjects' behavior could be described as …
Multiple-Stimulus Discrimination And Stimulus Overselectivity With Preschool Children, Maria C. Quintero
Multiple-Stimulus Discrimination And Stimulus Overselectivity With Preschool Children, Maria C. Quintero
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Stimulus overselectivity is said to occur when behavior is under the control of a restricted set of stimuli from a stimulus complex. Three studies investigated the effects of specific multiple-stimulus training histories upon the overselective responding of normal preschool children.
In Experiment 1, eight children 3 to 5 years of age, were trained to discriminate forms presented on cards. Each form was labelled with a nonsense syllable, and each card (multiple stimulus) consisted of two forms. A time-delay training procedure was used. Four subjects were trained using Concurrent training in which two of the three S- response choices contained components …

The Size Distribution And Shape Of Curd Granules In Traditional Swiss Hard And Semi-Hard Cheeses, M. Ruegg, U. Moor
The Size Distribution And Shape Of Curd Granules In Traditional Swiss Hard And Semi-Hard Cheeses, M. Ruegg, U. Moor
Food Structure
Curd granule junction patterns in hard (Emmentaler, Gruyere, Sbrinz) and semi-hard cheeses (Appenzeller , Tilsiter, Raclette) were visualized on slices and examined using light microscopy and digital image analysis. Horizontal and vertical sections were cut in different zones of the loaves, in order to obtain information on the orientation of the flattened curd granules.
The frequency histograms of the cross section areas could in most cases adequately be described as a log-normal distribution. The median values ranged from 0.97 to 1.15 mm2 and, from 1.31 to 1.68 mm2 for hard and semi-hard cheeses, respectively.
An elliptical form factor was used …

A Comparison Of The Verbal Productions Of Normal And Behaviorally Disordered Children Using Interview And Color Book Techniques, Alan L. Muhlestein
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to test the usefulness of The Color Book in facilitating interactions between an interviewer and a child. Interviews employing The Color Book were compared with interviews in which no art materials were used. More specifically the question of whether the length of utterances, number of emotional words used and statements about self by the subjects differed between groups using the Color Book and interviews without art materials.
Subjects were forty grade school age children attending public schools. Twenty had previously been classified as behaviorally disordered and the other twenty had no such classification. Half …
Contextual Control Of Stimulus Equivalence With Preschool Children, M. Regina Green
Contextual Control Of Stimulus Equivalence With Preschool Children, M. Regina Green
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research asked whether a contextual stimulus in a visual conditional discrimination task controlled membership in classes of stimuli related hierarchically. Six experiments with nonreading preschool children posed the following question:
Does a stimulus juxtaposed with a conditional discrimination task control relations among the stimuli involved in the task? In Experiments I and II, printed instance or concept words were juxtaposed with conditional discrimination tasks involving symbols. Results for eight of nine children demonstrated neither conditional nor equivalence relations between words and symbols.
Would conditional discrimination training establish classes of visual stimuli composed of selectively nonequivalent subsets? In Experiment III, …

Capitol Reef: The Forgotten National Park, Jonathan Scott Thow
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to examine the changing relationship between the National Park Service and the residents of Wayne County, Utah. In 1937, Capitol Reef National Park was created as a result of the efforts made by local residents looking for a solution to their economic problems. Over the next five decades, the anticipated economic upturn spurred by the National Park did not develop. Instead, the relationship between the parties involved underwent a radical change because of conflicts over private landholdings, grazing and mineral rights, expansion, development, and road building. While this study does trace the growth of …

Twenty-Five Years Of Bonjour, Alfred N. Smith
Twenty-Five Years Of Bonjour, Alfred N. Smith
Faculty Honor Lectures
While considering topics appropriate for this lecture, I became encouraged by the thought that my quarter of a century of experience in foreign language teaching would surely suggest some interesting possibilities. Up until this moment, I had never consciously counted my years of service, and frankly when I realized that I had spent two and one-half decades in front of the blackboard teaching French as a second language mainly to Anglo adults, I began to feel within the rumblings of a need to mark this anniversary in some significant way. Several days later in an amusing conversation with a friend, …

Log Cabin Studies: The Rocky Mountain Cabin, Log Cabin Technology And Typology, Log Cabin Bibliography, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
While conducting fieldwork in southern Idaho during the summer of 1980, I came upon numerous examples of a type of cabin not previously documented. This report attempts to determine how this type fits with other known cabin types, and to find its place in present theories about American vernacular architecture. By making use of extant reports, historical photos, and archeological site forms, it is apparent this cabin type can be found throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Along with other Western studies, this report attempts to show that vernacular construction patterns in the Western United States differ from those present in …

The Effects Of Neutral And Sex-Specific Terminology On Sex Stereotyping, Natalie J. Malovich
The Effects Of Neutral And Sex-Specific Terminology On Sex Stereotyping, Natalie J. Malovich
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A study was conducted to examine the effects of neutral and sex-specific terminology on sex stereotyping in regard to two primary questions: 1) whether or not the use of sex-neutral terminology alters subjects ' associations to particular words, and 2) whether, in the absence of gender identification, subjects make traditional sex-role assumptions about neutral terms. A third questions examined potential differences in male and female subjects' responses to neutral and sex-specific terminology.
Using a semantic differential technique, 40 male and 40 female volunteer subjects described a number of occupations and roles identified by sex-specific or sex-unspecified labels. Descriptions of those …
