The location and lifestyle of pastoral Cache Valley were instantly appealing to Dr. Briggs Depew, who grew up in the small farming community of Raymond, in southern Alberta, Canada. However, it was the administrationʼs overall vision for the Huntsman School of Business and his colleaguesʼ personal excellence and genuine interest in helping students excel that made him eager to join the Economics and Finance Department at the Huntsman School.

The Effects Of Sociocultural Factors On Social Connectedness And Its Relationship With Minority Stress In Lgbtq Young Adults, Chandler Whitlock, Renee V. Galliher
The Effects Of Sociocultural Factors On Social Connectedness And Its Relationship With Minority Stress In Lgbtq Young Adults, Chandler Whitlock, Renee V. Galliher
Student Research Symposium
Members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) community have historically been ostracized from various social groups, and this victimization has been associated with multiple functional impairments (Lick, Durso & Johnson, 2013). The minority stress model suggests that a higher frequency of mental disorders exists in the LGBTQ community due to alienation and isolation from social structure and institutions. It predicts the isolation is instigated by the individual’s identification as a minority. Lick, Durso and Johnson (2013) proposed minority stress contributed to disparities in the health of sexual minorities. These disparities were categorized into three sociocultural stress categories: institutional …
Comparison Of Ground Reaction Forces Between Novice And Experienced Ballet Dancers Performing A Second Position Jump Landing, Dayun Jeon
Student Research Symposium
Ballet dancers are exposed to the high likelihood of lower extremity injury due to repeated high impact jumps under stringent ballet rules. According to the claims of current literature, excessive vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) and the rate of force development (RFD) during the landing phase of a jump are highly associated with the incidence of injury. The aim of this study was to quantify the difference of the VGRF and RFD between novice and experienced ballet dancers during a ballet second position jump landing task. Twelve experienced ballet dancers and 12 novice dancers performed second position jumps on a …

Let’S Talk About Weight Bias Attitudes Among Future Health Professionals, Rees Checketts
Student Research Symposium
Weight bias has been linked with obesity epidemic and other weight-related concerns such as eating disorders in our society. Previous studies have found that healthcare providers such as medical doctors, nurses, and dieticians showed stigmatizing attitudes toward patients who are categorized as overweight or obese individuals. Due to those professionals’ negative attitudes toward the particular vulnerable population, patients expressed lack of willingness to seek out for help or students experienced negative psychological states. To find needs of weight bias training for undergraduate students in health education and related fields, we investigated weight bias attitudes among undergraduate students in the rocky …

Harvest And Disposal Of Hazardous Algal Blooms, Bethany A. Jensen, Kyle M. Hillman
Student Research Symposium
Utah Lake, a major source of recreation and farmland irrigation in the Provo area, was closed to all use and access in the summer of 2016. There was a toxic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) outbreak, which resulted in microcystin concentrations over eight times the recreational water threshold limit (20 ug/L threshold and 176 ug/L detection). The ability to harvest and dispose of these toxic algae before contamination of the lake occurs is important to ensure protection of human and animal health and the environment, and more hazardous algae blooms (HABs) are anticipated in the future.

Effects Of A One-Time Compost Addition On Soil Health In A Rainfed Dryland Organic Wheat System, Idowu Atoloye, Jennifer Reeve, Astrid Jacobson, Earl Creech
Effects Of A One-Time Compost Addition On Soil Health In A Rainfed Dryland Organic Wheat System, Idowu Atoloye, Jennifer Reeve, Astrid Jacobson, Earl Creech
Student Research Symposium
Maintaining adequate soil fertility and health is a challenge in dryland organic wheat systems. This research examines the short-term impact of a one-time addition of compost on the soil health in a rainfed dryland organic winter-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) fallow system. Field plot experiments were established in 2015 in a semiarid dryland organic wheat field in Snowville, Utah with the following treatments: control (C), compost at 12.5 Mg/ha dry weight (CM1), 25 Mg/ha (CM2), 50 Mg/ha (CM3), positive control 25 Mg compost + 40 lb N feather meal (PC), and 2 Mg chicken manure (CMU). Soil samples were taken …

The Age Of Robotic Milk: Data Output Analysis Of Lely Astronaut Computer Program, Jessica R. Christensen
Student Research Symposium
LELY is one of the major companies in the world that manufactures robotic dairy milkers. While Lely is a worldwide company based in Holland, It entered the United States market only within the past few years. Dairy robotics is a new field that has great potential for innovation, but it still has relatively unknown effects on dairy farms, dairy production, and dairy farmers. During the summer of 2016, the research conducted centered on a data output analysis of the LELY Astronaut computer program. Data reports from the robotic milkers were collected and analyzed, and the information was examined to determine …

Understanding contribution in youth sport contexts: a critical review
Objectives
The objectives of this ongoing study are to: 1) investigate how “contribution” was conceptualized and studied across different disciplines, 2) to study what terms and definitions were used to study this general construct across disciplines, and 3) to use this information to develop a holistic, integrative definition of contribution in sport.
Methods
We performed a systematic search of English peer-reviewed literature using SPORTDISCUS and Academic Search Premier and a wide range of keywords (e.g., contribution, youth sport, volunteerism). The articles were specific to or included sport and contribution or some …
Rancher Perceptions Of Ecosystem Services From Rangelands Of The Great Basin, Betsey York
Rancher Perceptions Of Ecosystem Services From Rangelands Of The Great Basin, Betsey York
Student Research Symposium
Ecosystem services are benefits humans obtain as a result of ecosystem processes and conditions. Rangelands in the Intermountain West are increasingly expected to provide ecosystem services to the general public as well as ranchers. Land management agencies have created management plans to manage for a suite of ecosystem services including those necessary for livestock production as well as ecosystem function and human appreciation. Because ranchers are often in charge of implementing these plans, there is a need to understand the values they place on the array of ecosystem services they are required to manage. Such understanding may ensure that ecosystem …
Determination Of Water Quality At Seven Sites Along The Middle To Lower Bear River, Autumn Slade
Determination Of Water Quality At Seven Sites Along The Middle To Lower Bear River, Autumn Slade
Student Research Symposium
Water quality is currently a significant topic across the nation and will continue to be as increased nutrients and compounds like pharmaceuticals are introduced into aquatic environments through sources such as wastewater. Many of these compounds have negative or unknown effects to the ecosystem, making it critical to determine the concentrations of these compounds. In this project, various water quality parameters were measured at seven sites along the Middle to Lower Bear River. Concentrations were then compared across the sites, to past data and to set standards in Utah and Idaho. Much of the data was comparable to past data …
Smartphone-Based Optode Sensor For Calcium And Magnesium Continuous Detection In Water, Wei Zhang
Smartphone-Based Optode Sensor For Calcium And Magnesium Continuous Detection In Water, Wei Zhang
Student Research Symposium
Water hardness is closely linked to our daily life, which is usually quantified by calcium carbonate in water. Hard water may have moderate health benefit, but it can bring serious problem in industrial areas. In this paper, a rapid-response, reliable and convenient device was developed to measure calcium and magnesium concentration in water sample continuously. It was based on phase extraction equilibria in the specific ion-exchange substance membrane, which contained ionophore (selectively binding to specific ions), chromoionophore (a lipophilic pH indicator), ionic salt (a cation exchanger), polymer (PVC) and plasticizer. The device was connected with Mitos pump and controlled by …

Relative Effects Of Sleep Hygiene Behavior And Physical Exercise On Sleep Quality, Austin Dopp
Relative Effects Of Sleep Hygiene Behavior And Physical Exercise On Sleep Quality, Austin Dopp
Research on Capitol Hill
Numerous studies have shown the relationship between sleep and overall health. A common measure of sleep is sleep quality which has been shown to be influenced by a variety of factors such as physical activity, diet, stress, social engagement, cognitive stimulating, and sleep hygiene behaviors. Data was analyzed from a previous study to determine whether trying to change one’s sleep would improve sleep quality and if this was more effective than physical exercise. A group of 104 individuals, randomized to the treatment group, were asked to log their daily activities, via smartphone app, within these six behavioral domains for six …

Cosmetic Surgery And Body Image Among Utah Women, Susan R. Madsen, Janika Dillon, Robbyn T. Scribner
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
National media and scholars have puzzled over the high levels of plastic surgery among Utah women, and a national magazine even called Salt Lake City the “Vainest City in America.” Many wonder why Salt Lake City, capital of one of the most religious states in the nation, would employ more plastic surgeons per capita than Los Angeles. In fact, two-thirds of Utah Mormon women know someone who has undergone cosmetic plastic surgery. In a state known for its conservative and wholesome values, visitors are surprised at the large quantity of billboards lining Utah’s interstate freeway advertising plastic surgery and other …

Trembling aspen covers a large geographic range in North America, and previous studies reported that a better understanding of its singular influence on soil properties and processes is of high relevance for global change questions. Here we investigate the potential impact of a shift in aspen abundance on soil carbon sequestration and soil carbon stability at the continental scale by conducting a systematic literature review using 23 published studies. Our review shows that aspen’s effect on soil carbon is relatively consistent throughout the species range. Aspen stores less C in the forest floor but similar amounts in the mineral soil …
