Reliving 24 Years In The Next 12 Minutes: A Statistical And Personal History Of University-Class Satellites, Michael Swartwout

Small Satellite Conference

In 2018, university-class satellites -- spacecraft built by university students for the express purpose of student training -- are widely accepted as a means to recruit undergraduate students into the space workforce, train them effectively before graduation and retain them in the field after graduation. Hundreds of undergraduates at dozens of schools around the world have directly contributed to missions that operated on-orbit. The spacecraft themselves are capable of performance research-grade science or demonstrate new enabling technologies. This was not always the case. For the first forty years of spaceflight, there were exceedingly few university-class missions; those that flew were …

Single Gps Antenna Attitude Vector Pair - Neossat Recovery, Stuart Eagleson, Viqar Abbasi, Natasha Jackson, Robert Scott, Stefan Thorsteinson Aug 2018

Single Gps Antenna Attitude Vector Pair - Neossat Recovery, Stuart Eagleson, Viqar Abbasi, Natasha Jackson, Robert Scott, Stefan Thorsteinson

Small Satellite Conference

In flight, the Near Earth Object Surveillance Satellite (NEOSSat) lost use of its single-string magnetometer that was necessary to coarsely solve the attitude problem and seed the satellite's star tracker for fine attitude determination. Unable to determine attitude, satellite control was lost and an ad-hoc, in-flight, solution was needed to recover operations. Building on existing GPS literature, NEOSSat's GPS receiver was augmented, in software, to estimate the antenna's look direction, in an inertial frame of reference. Matched with the known (mounting) vector in the body frame, a vector pair was successfully created that replaced the one from the magnetometer. This …

Model-Based Assurance For Satellites With Commercial Parts In Radiation Environments, Arthur Witulski, Brian Sierawski, Rebekah Austin, Gabor Karsai, Nag Mahadevan, Robert Reed, Ron Schrimpf, Kenneth Label

Small Satellite Conference

Small satellite projects often do not have the budget or schedule to incorporate radiation-hardened parts or extensive radiation test campaigns into their schedule. Yet a case must be made that the spacecraft will function as intended in orbit, with radiation, temperature and vacuum affecting part performance. The Vanderbilt Institute for Space and Defense Electronics, with support from NASA HQ, NASA NEPP, and NASA JPL, has developed a platform for making a safety case for systems with commercial (non-hardened) parts, called the Systems Engineering Assurance and Modeling (SEAM) platform. The platform has three elements: goal structuring notation (GSN), systems engineering models …

Reif, Erich B. Emery, Richard Stumpf, Greg Emerick, Ryan Nelson

Small Satellite Conference

HABsat-1 is designed to improve our understanding of algal bloom dynamics and their causes on land by addressing several current limiting factors for this application using existing satellites. For example, there is suboptimal imager design for water, insufficient spatial resolution for precise co-registration of surface observations, and too few satellites with such capabilities to defeat cloud cover in maritime, tropical and temperate climates. We will overcome these problems by merging a new low-cost multispectral imaging technology with a low-cost CubeSat bus. CubeSats cost roughly 1/100th to 1/1000th of most current long-life imaging satellites. Such cost decreases are necessary to improve …

A Framework For Assessing Natural Lands And Finding Common Ground In The Bear River Range, Scott Mccomb

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Forests, wetlands, grasslands, lakes and deserts make up the natural lands that humans and nature rely on. In the Bear River Range, these lands are becoming smaller and more disconnected due to residential and commercial development, agriculture, energy production and transportation corridors. In addition, natural lands are owned and managed by a variety of groups representing different values, priorities and traditions. For large-scale conservation to be successful, it needs to incorporate multiple priorities. The purpose of this study was to provide a process for identifying the remaining network of natural lands within the Bear River Range that indicate high ecological …

Changing Delay Discounting: Identification And Evaluation Of Ecologically Valid Methods For Reducing Impulsive Choice, Jillian M. Rung Aug 2018

Changing Delay Discounting: Identification And Evaluation Of Ecologically Valid Methods For Reducing Impulsive Choice, Jillian M. Rung

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Impulsivity takes many forms, one of which is termed impulsive choice. Impulsive choice entails preference for an outcome due to its immediacy relative to more optimal outcomes that take longer to come to fruition. For example, one may wish to have another serving of a decadent dessert after dinner—but doing so may undermine a longer-term goal of improved health and nutrition. If having the extra serving becomes a habit, the consequences of that choice compound and may lead to, for example, obesity. A high degree of impulsive choice such as this is indeed related to issues such as obesity, …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The production of cyanobacterial biofilm biomass and phycocyanin from Rotating Algal Biofilm Reactors utilizing undiluted produced water from oil and natural gas extraction as a culture medium was investigated in this study. Produced water is the largest waste stream generated by the oil and natural gas industries and represents a large volume of non-potable water that may be available for algae culture with minimal impact on freshwater resources. Combining the use of produced wastewater as culture medium with the production of high value algal pigments, such as phycocyanin, may increase the economic viability of algae culture and wastewater purification. High …

Using Social Network Analysis To Examine The Intersection Of Adolescent Friendships And Health Behavior, Emily Long Aug 2018

Using Social Network Analysis To Examine The Intersection Of Adolescent Friendships And Health Behavior, Emily Long

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Adolescence marks a vulnerable developmental period for health behavior, and research demonstrates that social context and interpersonal relationships impact the health behavior choices of adolescents. In addition, theories of adolescent development suggest a bidirectional relationship between environmental factors, including social relationships, and health. Friendships are one of the most salient relationships during adolescence, and new methods from the field of social network analysis allow researchers to explicitly examine the mechanisms through which friends influence health behavior, and simultaneously, how health and health behavior impacts the formation of friendships. Importantly, social network methods (e.g., stochastic actor-based models, exponential random graph models) …

Children from different socioeconomic backgrounds often have different long-term outcomes in terms of school, language, and emotional wellbeing. At this time, no reasons for these differences have been agreed upon by experts across disciplines. Parents with different personal characteristics and life situations use different types and amounts of interactions with their infants. The social interactions infants experience during their first year of life provide the start of their developmental path in the areas of language and executive control while also guiding their expectations for interactions with people around them.

This study used previously unpublished data from a sample of 79 …

Understanding Plant Secondary Metabolites; Above And Below Ground, Andrea K. Clemensen Aug 2018

Understanding Plant Secondary Metabolites; Above And Below Ground, Andrea K. Clemensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Plants naturally produce primary and secondary metabolites. Primary metabolites are directly involved with plant growth and metabolic function. Plant secondary metabolites (PSM) were once thought of as metabolic waste products, and more recently viewed as toxins to herbivores. However, ongoing research shows that PSM are beneficial to herbivores at low doses, and PSM aid plants by attracting pollinators, recovering from injury, protecting from ultraviolet radiation, increasing drought tolerance, and aid in defense against pathogens, diseases, and herbivores. Plant secondary metabolites also influence soil nutrient cycling, and can increase the sustainability of agroecosystems. Endophyte-infected tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), which …
