Transnational Civic Education And Emergent Bilinguals In A Dual Language Setting, Marialuisa Di Stefano, Steve P. Camicia

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Inclusion is a fundamental aspect of social studies education in general and democratic education in particular. Inclusion is especially important when we consider the possibilities for transnational civic culture and education. The theoretical framework of this study is based upon concepts of positionality, identity, and belonging as they are related to student understanding of communities. A dual-language, third-grade classroom provided the site for this ethnographic study. Data included participant observations, interviews with the teacher and students, and artifacts of student work. Findings illustrate how the students in the study understood the complexity of their identities at a young age and …

Effects Of Eutrophication On Birds In Three Bays Of Great Salt Lake: A Comparative Analysis With Utah Dwr Waterbird Survey Data, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh Aug 2018

Effects Of Eutrophication On Birds In Three Bays Of Great Salt Lake: A Comparative Analysis With Utah Dwr Waterbird Survey Data, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Farmington Bay and Bear River support massive numbers of migratory birds. Because of Farmington Bay’s high nutrient loading and hypereutrophic condition, the Utah DWQ has proposed to list it as impaired under EPA’s and Utah’s 303d criteria. There is concern, however, that changing nutrient loading might influence invertebrate prey of birds, but it is not known if this would be a positive or negative effect. Bear River Bay is far less eutrophic, but has a similar shallow morphometry, and thus presents an ideal comparative opportunity to assess the influence of eutrophication on birds.

From 2007‐2011 the Utah Division of Wildlife …

Continuous Nicotine Exposure Does Not Affect Resurgence Of Alcohol Seeking In Rats, Charles C. J. Frye, Jillian M. Rung, Rusty W. Nall, Ann Galizio, Jeremy M. Haynes, Amy L. Odum

Psychology Faculty Publications

Alcohol is the most commonly used drug in the United States and alcohol abuse can lead to alcohol use disorder. Alcohol use disorder is a persistent condition and relapse rates following successful remission are high. Many factors have been associated with relapse for alcohol use disorder, but identification of these factors has not been well translated into preventative utility. One potentially important factor, concurrent nicotine use, has not been well investigated as a causal factor in relapse for alcohol use disorder. Nicotine increases the value of other stimuli in the environment and may increase the value of alcohol. If nicotine …

Zika virus (ZIKV) causes no-to-mild symptoms or severe neurological disorders. To investigate the importance of viral and host genetic variations in determining ZIKV infection outcomes, we created three full-length infectious cDNA clones as bacterial artificial chromosomes for each of three spatiotemporally distinct and genetically divergent ZIKVs: MR-766 (Uganda, 1947), P6-740 (Malaysia, 1966), and PRVABC-59 (Puerto Rico, 2015). Using the three molecularly cloned ZIKVs, together with 13 ZIKV region-specific polyclonal antibodies covering nearly the entire viral protein-coding region, we made three conceptual advances: (i) We created a comprehensive genome-wide portrait of ZIKV gene products and their related species, with several previously …

Laser Crosslink Atmospheric Sounder To Investigate The Effects Of Deep Convection On Ozone, Cadence Payne, Angela Crews, Kerri Cahoy, Daniel Cziczo, John Conklin, Michael Hart, Gottfried Kirchengaast, Nicolas Fraunhofer

Small Satellite Conference

Deep convection at mid-latitudes can directly inject water vapor into the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS). Increased water vapor creates a photochemical environment that can activate inorganic chlorine (HCl) which then catalytically destroys ozone, increasing health and environment risk [1]. The Laser Crosslink Atmospheric Sounder (LCAS) is a prototype toward a low-Earth-orbiting (LEO) constellation to concurrently measure both UTLS water vapor and temperature at high vertical resolution, improving temporal and spatial coverage. The two-part approach uses both beam pointing and intensity. First, precision pointing measures atmospheric refraction and can be used to obtain temperature profiles [2]. Second, intensity on the continuum …

Microsats And Moby Dick: Microsatellite Support To Whale Science And Conservation, Matt Bille, Rachel Dendiu, Kirk Borne, Laurie Baker, Steve Brune, Ian Byrnes, Chris Round

Small Satellite Conference

Scientists who study the 92 species of whales and dolphins (aka cetaceans) know that many populations are endangered. There may be only 12 vaquita porpoises left, and the ~450 North Atlantic Right whales are being decimated by ship collisions and fishing gear. Conservation efforts rely on implanted radio tags and satellite transponders to track cetaceans in 1.3 billion cubic kilometers of ocean. These efforts, however, are handicapped by technology and the limits of available satellite support. Leading cetologists surveyed in Booz Allen Hamilton’s Project WHALES (Whale/Habitat and Location/Environment Smallsats) agreed there are simply not enough tracking assets in space. The …

The Small Satellite Reliability Initiative: A Public-Private Effort Addressing Smallsat Mission Confidence, Michael Johnson, Patricia Beauchamp, Harald Schone, Catherine Venturini, Lee Jasper, Robbie Robertson, Miquel Moe, Jesse Leitner

Small Satellite Conference

Presently, most CubeSat components and buses are generally not appropriate for missions where significant or indeterminate risk of failure is unacceptable. This has precluded their use in many cases where their attributes could otherwise enable or enhance mission objectives. However, in the future, CubeSats and SmallSats, which deviate from CubeSat form factors but often incorporate CubeSat components and subsystems, will address challenges that many presently consider to be beyond the platform’s capabilities. This growing potential utility, combined with the limited volume of successful CubeSat flight heritage, is driving an interagency effort to improve small satellite mission confidence. The Small Satellite …

Social Dimensions Of Urban Flood Experience, Exposure, And Concern, Rebecca L. Hale, Courtney Flint, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, Joanna Endter-Wada

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

With growing urban populations and climate change, urban flooding is an important global issue, even in dryland regions. Flood risk assessments are usually used to identify vulnerable locations and populations, flooding experience patterns, or levels of concern about flooding, but rarely are all of these approaches combined. Furthermore, the social dynamics of flood concerns, exposure, and experience are underexplored. We combined geographic and survey data on household‐level measures of flood experience, concern, and exposure in Utah's urbanizing Wasatch Front. We asked: (1) Are socially vulnerable groups more likely to be exposed to flood risk? (2) How common are flooding experiences …

A Population-Based Model Of The Temporal Memory In The Hippocampus, Sorinel A. Oprisan, Mona Buhusi, Catalin V. Buhusi

Psychology Faculty Publications

Spatial and temporal dimensions are fundamental for orientation, adaptation, and survival of organisms. Hippocampus has been identified as the main neuroanatomical structure involved both in space and time perception and their internal representation. Dorsal hippocampus lesions showed a leftward shift (toward shorter durations) in peak-interval procedures, whereas ventral lesions shifted the peak time toward longer durations. We previously explained hippocampus lesion experimental findings by assuming a topological map model of the hippocampus with shorter durations memorized ventrally and longer durations more dorsal. Here we suggested a possible connection between the abstract topological maps model of the hippocampus that stored reinforcement …
