Fiber is an important part of a healthful diet that provides numerous benefits when adequately consumed. Yet, many individuals do not know what fiber is, let alone how to eat enough. Thus, it is no surprise that fiber has been a dietary concern among children and adolescents for over a decade, with less than 10% of youth meeting recommended fiber intakes (Finn et al., 2019; Kranz et al., 2012; McGill et al., 2015). In this fact sheet, we will discuss what fiber is, along with its health benefits, current recommendations, and strategies for incorporating fiber into your child’s diet.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) is a commercially important timber species planted across a wide temperature gradient in the southeastern U.S. It is critical to ensure that the planting stock is suitably adapted to the growing environment to achieve high productivity and survival. Long-term field studies, although considered the most reliable method for assessing cold hardiness of loblolly pine, are extremely resource-intensive and time-consuming. The development of a high-throughput screening tool to characterize and classify freeze tolerance among different genetic entries of seedlings will facilitate accurate deployment of highly productive and well-adapted families across the landscape. This study presents a …

The Association Of Assault Military Sexual Trauma And Sexual Function Among Partnered Female Service Members And Veterans: The Mediating Roles Of Depression And Sexual Self-Schemas, Rebecca K. Blais, Whitney S. Livingston
Psychology Faculty Publications
Background: Military sexual trauma (MST) that involves assault is associated with poorer sexual function in U. S. women service members/veterans (SM/Vs). Theory of sexual function suggests that the presence of higher depression severity and more negative sexual self-schemas may contribute to sexual dysfunction. This has yet to be examined in partnered women SM/Vs who are survivors of MST.
Objective: Using path analysis, the current study examined the associations of MST type, depression, sexual self-schemas, and sexual function in 818 partnered women SM/Vs.
Method: Three separate mediation models were tested, all testing indirect effects of depression and sexual self-schemas on the …

Loblolly pine is an economically important timber species in the United States, with almost 1 billion seedlings produced annually. The most significant disease affecting this species is fusiform rust, caused by Cronartium quercuum f. sp. fusiforme. Testing for disease resistance in the greenhouse involves artificial inoculation of seedlings followed by visual inspection for disease incidence. An automated, high-throughput phenotyping method could improve both the efficiency and accuracy of the disease screening process. This study investigates the use of hyperspectral imaging for the detection of diseased seedlings. A nursery trial comprising families with known in-field rust resistance data was conducted, and …

Lessons Learned From Operation Of On On-Board Calibration Devices On Sentinel Sentinel-2 Msi And Sentinel Sentinel-3 Olci, S. Clerc, L. Bourg
The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)
Sentinel-2 MSI and Senitnel-3 OLCI are two visible imagers contributing to the European Copernicus Earth Observation program. Both instruments are periodically calibrated using on-board Sun diffusers. OLCI has two Sun diffusers (nominal and reference diffuser), while MSI has only one. OLCI uses a shutter to perform dark signal calibration, while MSI relies on nigtht-time acquisitions over the Ocean. Finally, OLCI has a coloured diffuser for spectral response monitoring.
Two Sentinel-2 and 3 units each are currently flying, with the A units achieving 5 years of operation. The purpose of this presentation is to draw some conclusions from the flight experience …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Utah Women And Work: Health Impacts, Marin Christensen, Susan R. Madsen, Jenna Dyckman, Dianne Mcadams-Jones
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020–21 has affected workers across the globe, and women in the workforce have been disproportionately impacted, including those who live in Utah. The pandemic affected every aspect of life, especially physical and mental health. While the fatality rate has been higher for men, the pandemic impacted women’s mental health at a higher rate with more women being laid off or furloughed in certain industries (e.g., retail, food services, hospitality), experiencing increased workloads in other sectors (e.g., healthcare, education), absorbing greater unpaid caregiving responsibilities from homeschooling and childcare disruptions, and reporting elevated instances of domestic violence. These …

Interpreting Covid-19 Deaths Among Nursing Home Residents In The Us: The Changing Role Of Facility Quality Over Time, Debasree Das Gupta, Uma Kelekar, Sidney C. Turner, Anupam A. Sule, Taya G. Jerman
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
A report published last year by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) highlighted that COVID-19 case counts are more likely to be high in lower quality nursing homes than in higher quality ones. Since then, multiple studies have examined this association with a handful also exploring the role of facility quality in explaining resident deaths from the virus. Despite this wide interest, no previous study has investigated how the relation between quality and COVID-19 mortality among nursing home residents may have changed, if at all, over the progression of the pandemic. This understanding is indeed lacking given that …
Oversimplification Of The Relationship Between Ultrasound And Skinfold Measurements Of Subcutaneous Fat Thickness, Dale R. Wagner
Oversimplification Of The Relationship Between Ultrasound And Skinfold Measurements Of Subcutaneous Fat Thickness, Dale R. Wagner
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
In the March 2021 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, two separate studies (1,2) from different research laboratories both used ultrasound to estimate body fat percentage (%BF). Both Chandler et al. (1) and Tinsley et al. (2) reported using a modification of the Jackson–Pollock (3) seven-site skinfold formula to convert their ultrasound fat thicknesses into estimates of body density and subsequently converted body density to %BF with the Siri (4) formula. Close inspection of their methods reveals that the only “modification” to the Jackson–Pollock equation was a doubling of the ultrasound fat thicknesses. Tinsley et al. …
Accuracy: Adaptive Calibration Of Cubesatradiometer Constellations, John Bradburn, Mustafa Aksoy, Henry Ashley
Accuracy: Adaptive Calibration Of Cubesatradiometer Constellations, John Bradburn, Mustafa Aksoy, Henry Ashley
The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)
Recent technological advancements enable the cost-effective deployment of constellations of CubeSats. Constellations of radiometer equipped CubeSats have great potential for use in scientific missions for remote sensing objectives including weather tracking and storm imaging, climate change measurement, and atmospheric science, to name a few. While CubeSats provide a solution to challenges in cost, weight, and power, there exist drawbacks which make radiometer calibration more difficult, specifically due to increased sensitivity of the instrument to ambient conditions, resulting from the lack of an adequate thermal control system. To address this problem, a novel, constellation-level calibration framework is being developed called “Adaptive …

Evaluating Radiometry Within A Heterogenous Satellite Fleet, Michael Medford
The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)
Planet currently operates a constellation of hundreds of satellites that collect multiple images of the Earth each day, constructing an historic daily catalog of the Earth’s surface taken over the past four years containing millions of images. Innovations in satellite and camera design over the past few years have resulted in a constellation containing several generations of instruments that require relative and absolute radiometric calibration to produce a seamless imaging product. We use the moon as a natural stable reference unencumbered by atmospheric effects present while nadir imaging and have amassed a database of over nine millions images of the …

Human–Wildlife Interactions
Wild boar (Sus scrofa) reappeared in Flanders, Belgium in 2006 after more than half a century of absence. Besides being a native and highly valued game species in Europe, wild boar are also known to be responsible for car collisions, crop damage, disease transmission, and ecological damage at high densities. The management of wild boar therefore seeks to balance these positive and negative impacts. Given the highly fragmented landscape in Flanders and its multifunctional use, coexistence with wild boar is only possible through integrated management involving relevant stakeholder groups. However, to be successful, this requires that the management …

Women, especially those from highly religious societies, are underrepresented in professional and civic leadership positions. Considering how women's life experiences, especially from religious volunteer opportunities, can be reframed as training for broader leadership roles could help address this disparity. The potential for women to learn leadership skills from volunteer religious service is an overlooked, but possibly important, means of transferability to larger leadership roles. The current article describes a qualitative study of women's perceptions of leadership skills gained while serving as full-time volunteer missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during young adulthood. Respondents described perceptions of …

Adapting To Sea Level Rise: Insights From A New Evaluation Framework Of Physical Design Projects, Daniella Hirschfeld, Kristina E. Hill, Ellen Plane
Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Faculty Publications
Designers and engineers are developing proposals for physical projects to adapt coastal sites to future sea level rise related threats. This puts pressure on local and regional decision makers to develop strategic frameworks for prioritizing, permitting and funding such projects. However, no systematic evaluation tools exist for the full range of these innovative designs. We build on the literature to develop an evaluation framework that synthesizes two different approaches to categorize these proposals and provide insight for coastal managers and decision makers. We apply this framework to physical projects that address sea level rise in their design around the San …
