Nutrient Management For Recirculating Hydroponics, Noah J. Langenfeld, Lauren E. Payne, Bruce Bugbee
Nutrient Management For Recirculating Hydroponics, Noah J. Langenfeld, Lauren E. Payne, Bruce Bugbee
Hydroponics/Soilless Media
Steady-state nutrient management is essential in hydroponic culture. Determination of an appropriate refill solution is attained using the principle of mass balance. Optimizing the ratio of nutrient elements and refill solution concentrations requires an understanding of the ratio of nutrients in tissue to water, which is measured as water use efficiency (WUE). This ratio is then multiplied by the desired concentration of nutrients in leaf tissue to determine the refill solution composition. Deep-flow hydroponics enables constant monitoring of solution parameters and root health. We have achieved a steady-state nitrogen concentration in solution by using an automated pH control system that …

Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)
Broom snakeweed [Gutierrezia sarothrae (Pursh) Britton and Rusby] and threadleaf snakeweed [G. microcephala (DC.) A. Gray] are found on many rangelands in western North America. Snakeweeds are generally unpalatable; however, animals will graze them when other forage is not available and there are field reports that pregnant cows that graze snakeweeds may abort calves. Subsequent feeding studies using fresh cut snakeweed, ground and gavaged into pregnant cattle have failed to reproduce abortions, though it was evident that at high doses snakeweed quickly damaged the rumen microflora resulting in severe rumen atony, bloating and acidosis. We report here an …

Handling Non-Detects With Imputation In A Nested Design: A Simulation Study, Rose Adjei, John R. Stevens
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources
In this paper, a simulation study was conducted to assess whether it is ideal to address the issue of non-detects in data using a traditional substitution approach for non-detects, imputation, or a non-imputation based approach. Simulated data used were simple nested designs motivated by a real-life data in a study of bumble bee activity in a commercial cherry orchard by Kuivila et al. (2021). The simulated data were generated at different thresholds or censoring levels and at different effect sizes. For each simulated data, seven popular existing techniques to handle non-detects were applied: (i) Zero substitution, (ii) Substitution with half …

Survival rates for most cancers have increased steadily over the past few decades as new technologies have led to better treatment outcomes. However, this process often relies heavily on the detection of cancer in its earliest stages, before symptoms occur or a tumor is visible in a CT or MR image. This is particularly true for diseases such as pancreatic cancer that exhibit almost no symptoms until very late stages and have extremely low survival rates as a result. Even some commonly treatable diseases, such as breast cancer, become far more problematic in later stages. As such, any efforts to …
