An Economic Study Of Rats (Genus Rattus) In Cache County, Utah, John Vincent Bruce May 1951

An Economic Study Of Rats (Genus Rattus) In Cache County, Utah, John Vincent Bruce

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The most destructive animals in the world are rats (Rattus sp.). The annual destruction caused by rats in the United States is not known. but it has been estimated to be $189,000,000, according to Silver (1942) of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Silver states that our nation’s farmers lose approximately $6,000,000 annually. Rats not only eat vast amounts of food meant for human and livestock consumption, but they contaminate and waste as much or more than they eat. Rats are able to gnaw into buildings, grain bins, and other places were food and shelter are available to …

The Effect Of Ddt Upon The Digestion And Utilization Of Certain Nutrients By Dairy Calves, Verle R. Bohman May 1951

The Effect Of Ddt Upon The Digestion And Utilization Of Certain Nutrients By Dairy Calves, Verle R. Bohman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane or DDT as it is more commonly known, was first used extensively by the armed forces in the Pacific Area during World War II. This insecticide is not only a very toxic contact and stomach poison, but also is quite residual on most types of surfaces. Because of these qualities, it was selected to control the malaria mosquito and thus aided in the conquest of many disease-ridden islands of the Pacific.

When DDT became available to the general public after the war, it was found not only to be effective against mosquitoes but also many other types of insects. …

The Yield And Thiamine, Riboflavin And Niacin Content Of Alfalfa Hay As Related To Fertilizer Treatment Of Soil, Rasik L. Pathak

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa has long been recognized as an outstanding hay plant in terms of both yield and feeding value. It is high in digestible protein, minerals, and vitamins. Because of its long life it can be economically produced. It is of exceptional value in maintaining soil fertility by helping to control erosion, by improving the physical condition of the soil, and by accumulating large amounts of nitrogen.

The great importance of alfalfa growing in the United States is attested by its rapid and continued expansion. It is one of the most important forage crops and is grown on a greater acreage …

Bulletin No. 350 - Cemeteries Of Box Elder And Summit Counties, Joseph A. Geddes, Carmen Fredrickson Jan 1951

Bulletin No. 350 - Cemeteries Of Box Elder And Summit Counties, Joseph A. Geddes, Carmen Fredrickson

UAES Bulletins

One of man's greatest challenges is to build institutions that adequately meet basic needs. A cemetery is a social institution invented to take care of needs related to the dead.

Times and conditions change. A design which seemed adequate when initiated may soon become archaic and out-moded if it is not modified in the light of new discoveries.

This study raises many issues about cemeteries. As one reads the bulletin many questions concerning the nature and function of other institutions arise. What is their condition in contrast with the cemeteries?

This publication, the first in an institution series planned by …

Enemies Of Aspen, Clyde M. Christensen, Ralph L. Anderson, A. C. Hodson, Paul O. Rudolf

Aspen Bibliography

So long as aspen was considered primarily a weed species, there was little concern over the enemies which might injure or destroy it. Sometimes these enemies were actually considered "blessings in disguise. Now, however, that aspen not only is the most abundant "but also one of the most widely utilized tree species in the Lake States, there is increasing interest in anything that may affect its future supply. For that reason this brief summary of information on the enemies of aspen has been assembled.

Bulletin No. 343 - Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Biennial Report 1948-1950, R. H. Walker

UAES Bulletins

The objective of an agricultural experiment station is to help the farmer solve the technical problems of agriculture that he has neither the money, time, nor technical skill to solve himself. For sixty-two years now the Utah Station has been concerned with the problems peculiar to the state, problems of range management and of range cattle and sheep production, problems of fanning under dry land conditions, and problems of irrigation agriculture. Many problems have been solved. There is hardly a farm practice today that has not been influenced by the research of the agricultural experiment station. But new problems are …

A Cyto-Taxonomic Study Of The Genus Geranium Within The Wasatch Region, Richard J. Shaw May 1950

A Cyto-Taxonomic Study Of The Genus Geranium Within The Wasatch Region, Richard J. Shaw

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The western North American species of the genus Geranium have never been satisfactorily clarified. The perennial, indigenous species of this interesting group have been particularly confusing. One important reason for confusion in this group is the fact that the taxonomic problems of the perennial species have never been studied from the genetic point of view. A sound delimitation of specific and subspecific boundaries and phylogenetic relationships cannot be achieved without the application of cyto-genetic principles.

In respect to the cytological phase of this study, the author has placed emphasis on chromosome numbers in order to show evidences for and possible …

An Etiological And Host Range Study Of Celery Mosaic In Utah, Dennis H. Hall May 1950

An Etiological And Host Range Study Of Celery Mosaic In Utah, Dennis H. Hall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Celery mosaic is a virus disease of major economic importance in Utah. In years of severe epiphytotics, it has been a limiting factor in celery production. In 1947 losses due to this disease were estimated to exceed 8 per cent of the total crop. This estimate does not include losses resulting from reduction in grade or from plants discarded in the packing sheds. The celery acreage in Utah dropped from a high of 950 acres in 1946 to 750 acres in 1947 and dropped again in 1948 to 420 acres. Leaders in the industry attributed this reduction in acreage, in …

The Use Of Time Of High School Students Logan, Utah And In Eight Small Western Towns During The Summer Of 1949, Josephine West

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A considerable number of leaders in education are seriously considering a limited extention of the educational program in the summer. The various churches conduct what are sometimes called vacation schools, some of which are conducted in mountain retreats, where they combine recreation and bible study classes. There is now a law in Utah which permits school districts to levy taxes to pay for organized public recreation programs. An extention of any one or all of these programs into a community should be preceded by a knowledge of the amount of leisure time that is available and the attitude of the …

Farm Organization And Management In Egypt And Utah, Aly A. Morad May 1950

Farm Organization And Management In Egypt And Utah, Aly A. Morad

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Agriculture in Egypt is important to the economic structure of the country today as it was during the ancient days of Joseph and the Pharoahs, which dates back more than 3,500 years. As for Utah, agriculture is still important to the economic structure of the state as it was a hundred years ago in the days of Brigham Young and the Pioneers. These two statements should not hide the fact that the importance of agriculture to the economic structure of the two areas is diminishing. Since these ancient days, new techniques and methods have been introduced and used in agriculture. …

Establishing Criteria For The Pre-Service Selection Of Teachers With Special Application To The Utah State Agricultural College, Howard H. Barron

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Our American culture and civilization depends in large measure upon the recruiting of the right kind of men and women to be teachers in our American schools and colleges. All professions depend on effective teaching for their life blood. Many educators and colleges during the past few years have become concerned with pre-service selection methods for improving the teaching personnel. This concern has become somewhat intensified at the present time, largely as a result of four factors. One factor is the large number of returning servicemen, who are turning to teaching as a career. A second factor is improved salaries …

Prior to the year 1913, there had been some schools at the Utah State Agricultural College that had had biological science, exact science, language and arts, and social science groups for the graduates to fill requirements in before they could graduate from these particular schools.

However, it was not until the year 1913 that all of the schools, with the exception of the engineering school, were required to make the students meet these basic group requirements.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The control of mesquite is a major range problem in the Southwest. Mesquite is a thorny, woody shrub or tree that has infested 75 million acres of valuable range and pasture land in this region. It competes with grasses and other valuable plants for sunlight, moisture, and plant food. Mesquite also acts as a serious barrier to the handling of cattle on the range.

Mormon Colonization In Arizona, Joel E. Ricks Jan 1950

Mormon Colonization In Arizona, Joel E. Ricks

Joel Ricks Collection

While Mormon colonization was planned and initiated under Brigham Young, he died before his planned settlements could be well established. Thus it remained for the Quorum of the Twelve and Brigham Young's successor, John Taylor, to save the settlements already established and to expand the colonization of Arizona. Thus Brigham Young's colonial plans and efforts should be discussed as a part of the story of Mormon colonization. In the last three years of his life the great Mormon leader planned a magnificent colonization.

A Study Of The Factors Used To Determine Pupil Marks By The Male Physical Education Directors In The High Schools Of Utah, Vaughn William Gordon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Much criticism has been directed at the physical educators in most of our public schools regarding their methods of determining pupil marks for participation in physical education classes. This criticism has come from many sources. It has come from physical educators, educators, pupils, and the general public. Bookwalter, a leader in the field of physical education, states:

More frequently than one might suspect, pupil's marks in physical education have been determined the night before marks were to be issued. They were then based upon attendance and the teacher's ability to remember the pupil's conformity to rules. Teachers have been known …

Supply And Demand Of Elementary School Teachers In Utah, Arthur D. Jackson May 1949

Supply And Demand Of Elementary School Teachers In Utah, Arthur D. Jackson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the years of World War II the faculties of the public schools in Utah, as well as in the rest of the nation, were depleted to a serious extent, and enrollment in teacher training institutions throughout the country decreased. Because of this condition the State Department of Education in Utah as well as in other states was forced to issue letters of authorization to teachers who could not meet standard certification requirements in order to staff the schools. Many of these teachers are still teaching in the schools today.
