A Comparison Of Methods For Differentiating Sources Of Fecal Pollution Of Water, Russell S. Fraser
A Comparison Of Methods For Differentiating Sources Of Fecal Pollution Of Water, Russell S. Fraser
Biology
Winslow and Palmer (1910) stated: "Sanitarians are continually seeking and seeking in vain, for some criterion by which sewage pollution of human origin may be distinguished from surface wash and agricultural land," and conclude their study of intestinal streptococci by remarking that: "...the use of mannite broth as a differential test for streptococci of human origin would seem sufficiently promising to warrant further study."

The Effect Of Injected Radioactive Phosphorus On Some Phases Of Reproduction In The Albino Rat, Arland E. Olson
The Effect Of Injected Radioactive Phosphorus On Some Phases Of Reproduction In The Albino Rat, Arland E. Olson
Biology
Damage to the germinal tissue of the ovary by radiation was reported in 1905 by Halberstaedter and by Bergonie and Tribondeau (2). These workers stated only that X-irradiation of the ovary injured the organ and resulted in a marked decrease in size. In 1913 Lacassagne (2) reported the effects of X-irradiation on the ovary of the rabbit. After intensive study he reported that the ovary might be made sterile for a time but that recovery could take place. Primitive ova not killed at the time of irradiation would develop, and the animal could give birth to living young. Since these …

A Study Of The Campus Recreation At Utah State Agricultural College, Tod V. Carlini
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The importance and growth of campus recreation is being felt by leaders throughout the country. Daniels (2, p. 38) summarizes the importance of the total organism in modern education as follows: "Ample justification for a consideration of, the problem of recreation may be found in the latest and most authoritative literature in the field of educat1on, as well as in a direct study of conditions found on many college campuses throughout the country. Rooted firmly in the philosophy of modern educatlon is the thought that the total organism must be given the opportunity for experiences of an all-round nature, with …
An Analysis Of School Drop-Outs At Tooele High School, Franklin Whitehouse
An Analysis Of School Drop-Outs At Tooele High School, Franklin Whitehouse
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study of approximately 50 early school drop-outs is an effort to find out why so many boys and girls leave school before they complete their high school course. We need to know the basic reasons that prompt their decisions, not the superficial excuses that appear on many school records. The study was undertaken in the belief that when the causes are understood, they can be remedied through measures to provide adequate programs of student aid. If it is because of lack of interest in school, this, too, can be remedied through changes in school programs to make them mean …

Drainage Of The Logan-Hyde Park-Benson Area, Utah, Gordon H. Flammer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
B.A. Etcheverry (4) in his book, Land Drainage and Flood Protection, states that inadequate drainage causes: (1) a public health menace, (2) an animal health menace, (3) lower grade plant life, (4) inadequate soil saturation, (5) lower soil temperatures, (6) shallow root penetration and, therefore, plant suffering in late summer months from effects of drought, (7) poor soil texture and workability, (8) increased surface washing and erosion of land surface, and (9) alkali and saline conditions. Other factors such as poorer roads and highways, decreased tax revenues, etc., might be added to this list. The advantages of adequate drainage …

Merchandising Of Turkeys In The Principal Cities Of Utah, 1951-52, Joseph A. Bailey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The production of turkeys comprises an important part of the cash farm income in Utah. In 1951 the cash receipts from turkeys amounted to $13,986,000, or 7.4 percent of the cash income from all farm commodities (4). In the year 1951 Utah ranked seventh in the nation in turkey production (5). The production of turkeys has risen from a humble beginning to one of the important agriculture enterprises in Utah.
Whereas a portion of the crop can be marketed at home, approximately 90 percent of the turkeys must be shipped to eastern markets. The Utah Turkey Federation, together with the …

Distribution Of Fluorine In Utah County, Utah, Soils And Uptake Of Fluorine By Plants, E. Don Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Fluorine released from industrial operations is eventually deposited on the surface of the earth, intercepted by plants, or absorbed in open bodies of water. the term fluorine as used in this thesis will be considered to refer to fluorine in combined form.
Industrial expansion has caused atmosphere pollution from fluorine in many parts of the United States. Utah County, Utah, is one of the affected area, and is the principal area of concern in this thesis.
In the spring of 1951, Utah Agricultural Experiment Station initiated a broad investigation on soil, water, plant, and animal problems arising from fluorine atmospheric …

An Evaluation Of The Willard School As A Community-Centered School, Vaughn Wassom
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Every community must be provided with an educational program attuned to community life. It must provide for increased efficiency in production and widom in consumption. It must train in the ideals, the skills, and the habits essential to the highest level of home and community life. To this end there must be well trained, resourceful teachers who work under conditions that elicit their best efforts. There must be a curriculum that embraces community experiences and physical facilities that promote economy and efficiency of effort (12).
Schools can and should make a difference in their communities. As society's special agencies for …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In America the men of influence who have provided leadership to our country have always been concerned with the schooling of the nation's children because they have recognized education of the people to be a vital means of preserving and improving our democratic way of life. Our country's educators, in meeting their great responsibility, in turn have long been concerned with the improvement of educational methods and with the quality of teaching that is provided to these children.
A specific problem that has come to be recognized as one of great importance to the school systems and to the communities …

A Study Of The In-Service Growth Program For Ogden City Teachers, D. M. Kelley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In-service growth has been defined as: “The growth which takes place after the teacher is on the job.” It is the continuation of the professional development which began during the preservice period of preparation. In-service education is a process inherent in any planned program designed to make the individual a more effective teacher. This type of education is generally considered by school administrators as an integral part of any school program.

Evaluation Of Male Physical Education Programs In Selected Secondary Schools Of Utah As Determined By The Standards Of The Utah State Course Of Study, F. Dale Robbins
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Physical education has made unusually rapid progress during the past 50 years. Emphasis has deviated from absolute academic objectives to those permitting a well rounded educational program including the physical aspect. Physical education has been influenced by educational, spiritual, political, and social conditions.
As a result of these influences, the necessity of developing the physical has assumed major proportions. There is now a greater demand for physical education than ever before in the history of our country. For the welfare of not only the individual, but also to the state and nation, it is essential that an extremely high degree …

Socio-Economic Factors Influencing The Intent Of Rural Youths To Migrate From Emery, San Juan, Kane, And Piute Counties Of Utah, Abdul Ghani Joseph Habbab
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Rural communities in Utah continue to lose large numbers of their population. Counties with the highest birth rate are, in the main, those which have decreased most or remained relatively stationary in recent years. Rural migration presents a problem to the communities involved and to the individuals who move.

A Study Of Women's Participation And The Administration Of Intramural Sports In The Junior Colleges Of Utah, Pauline Fuller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The movement for intramural sports has developed and expanded greatly in the past two decades. Much of this growth has been attained by hard and patient work through many years. The pioneer work now accomplished, intramural directors must still assume the responsibility of keeping their programs abreast of the times.
Intramural sports appeared in schools long before interscholastic athletics. Students associated themselves together in clubs and competed against each other. This student intramural competition increased until in 1913 Michigan and Ohio State each inaugurated a department of intramural athletics under the direction of one man who was expected to handle …
Interest Patterns For Four Occupations: Kuder Preference Record, Barbara Swensen Baer
Interest Patterns For Four Occupations: Kuder Preference Record, Barbara Swensen Baer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The problems of personnel placement and vocational choice at some time concern nearly everyone, as the employer or as the employee. Many people drift into their occupations, others shift from one wrong choice to another, while a large number are defeated by the struggle for success in an occupation for which they are not fitted. The mere placement of a worker on a job does not guarantee job success or interest in that job. In many cases no consideration is made of interests, general abilities, or special aptitudes, and even with a perfect diagnosis of these factors vocational choice still …

For sixty-four years the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station has been studying the problems of the farmer to make life on the farm more profitable and more enjoyable and in turn to improve the economy of the entire state. From the laboratories and from the experimental farms have come research results that have and will continue to mean dollars and cents to the farmer and increased prosperity to the state. Here are a few brief statements of some of the results of the work during the past two years.
