The History Of Montpelier From 1864 To 1925, A. Mckay Rich May 1957

The History Of Montpelier From 1864 To 1925, A. Mckay Rich

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There have been many histories written on the great movements of American History and most states have had their histories, but almost endless localities have been neglected. Yet it is in the localities that we find the greatest stories and problems of the states, nations, and world in their embryonic stages. There is no better place to begin a realization of the heritage of America than in the story of one's own locality. It is for these reasons that I have chosen to write this paper upon the history of Montpelier, Idaho.

A Study Of The Relative Importance Of Items Discussed In Parent-Teacher Conferences As Rated By Parents And Educators In The Logan City Schools, Robert W. Bickmore May 1957

A Study Of The Relative Importance Of Items Discussed In Parent-Teacher Conferences As Rated By Parents And Educators In The Logan City Schools, Robert W. Bickmore

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There are numerous ways, both written and oral, in which the schools can report pupil progress to parents. Promising practices include parent-teacher conferences, notes to parents, combination of narrative reports and parent-teacher conferences, and progress check sheets indicating, among other things, attitudes and behavior.

Educators have long recognized the inadequacy of the report card and the traditional marking system. Studies show that no two teachers mark just alike, even with a common set of standards to follow. Children work for marks rather than self-improvement. Marks, alone, cannot and do not tell a complete story.

Elsbree (4) points out that many …

Comparison Of Two Plans For Administration Organization Of The School Districts Of Sanpete County, Leon F. Christiansen May 1957

Comparison Of Two Plans For Administration Organization Of The School Districts Of Sanpete County, Leon F. Christiansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Educational administration exists to develop and guide the educational program. Every local public school system is a legal agency of the state for the conduct of public education. State laws usually set up the administrative units for school districts and places upon local boards of education the responsibility for the management of the local schools. Such boards represent the people of the state, and the district, and they perform a large number of legally designated functions.

The constitution of the State of Utah states clearly the responsibility for the maintenance and establishment of the schools. The following are extracts from …

A Descriptive Analysis Of Teaching Social Attitudes At Intermountain School, John C. Cockrill

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The need for training in social attitudes for Indian children. If Indian children are to fit into modern society, attention is necessary to develop proper social attitudes since many must adjust from attitudes of their own home society in five to eight years.

Relationship Of Bicarbonate Concentration Of Plant Tissue To That Of The Growth Media As A Factor In Chlorosis, Gary H. Carlsen May 1957

Relationship Of Bicarbonate Concentration Of Plant Tissue To That Of The Growth Media As A Factor In Chlorosis, Gary H. Carlsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Throughout the years lime-induced chlorosis has contributed to untold economic losses. Although this disease has challenged the technical ingenuity of outstanding plant and soil scientists, the exact cause has never been determined; consequently, no preventative measures or permanent cures can, as yet, be recommended. This physiological malady, unchecked, continues its rampage in regions where the disease is prevalent.

The problem is of wide significance because calcareous soils are distributed throughout the world. It is of primary concern to us because the majority of the land of western United States is of this type. An estimated 500,000 acres of crops growing …

Reed Canarygrass Germination At Five Seed Maturity Stages And Sixteen Seed Treatments, Richard N. Peaden May 1957

Reed Canarygrass Germination At Five Seed Maturity Stages And Sixteen Seed Treatments, Richard N. Peaden

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) has long been recognized as adapted to wetlands and those subject to periodic flooding. In Utah, Wilson (1955) estimate that 40 percent of the valley bottom land is flooded at least part of the year. Much of this land is very dry late in the summer. Forages such as Alsike clover tolerate flooding and some salt but do not perform well under drouth. Work by Bolton (1946) indicated that flooding for 49 day did not cause serious permanent damage to Reed canarygrass. The author has observed Reed canarygrass growing in a shallow reservoir which …

Breakfast Habits Of Some Utah School Children, Marlene M. Stegelmeier May 1957

Breakfast Habits Of Some Utah School Children, Marlene M. Stegelmeier

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the last 10 years, much emphasis has been placed on the importance of breakfast for people of all ages. Nutritionists have pointed out that persons who eat a hearty breakfast show fewer signs of mid-morning fatigue, have or develop better work habits, and do not get as hungry as those who eat little or no breakfast.

Many people do not realize the importance of starting the day with a good breakfast. The 12 to 13 hour fast which the body undergoes from the evening meal until breakfast time requires the consumption of an adequate breakfast. Many poor breakfasts may …

An Evaluation Of The Pupil Progress Reporting System Of The Elementary Schools Of Ogden, Utah, Glenn Thomas May 1957

An Evaluation Of The Pupil Progress Reporting System Of The Elementary Schools Of Ogden, Utah, Glenn Thomas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Modern education today is concerned with the growth and development of the whole child. It is the school's obligation to report to the parents the progress the child is making. The system of reporting the progress of students to parents is important in any school because it is often the only contact between the parents and the teacher. The modern school should seek to provide the most satisfactory types of reports known. Continuous evaluation of the reporting system is of prime importance in order to assure a good report of the child's progress to the parents. As experience points the …

A Comparison Of Academic Achievement Between Pupils Of Selected Small Elementary Schools And Large Elementary Schools In Box Elder County, Robert Morgan May 1957

A Comparison Of Academic Achievement Between Pupils Of Selected Small Elementary Schools And Large Elementary Schools In Box Elder County, Robert Morgan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Constitution of the United States brought a “new look” throughout the western world toward the position the American school was to play in the protection of the cherished and newly won freedoms. Congressional action, backed by majority public opinion, legally bound the responsible power of school maintenance and operation over to the state and local governments. It was believed that the first line of defense for the protection of democracy lay in the foundation of good schools, and their activities could be best augmented by the strong support of the family community life cooperatively working for the welfare of …

Vending And Dispensing Milk And Related Products In The State Of Utah, Douglas S. Huber May 1957

Vending And Dispensing Milk And Related Products In The State Of Utah, Douglas S. Huber

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present era in the United States finds the people leaning more and more toward automation. The use of automatic machines in merchandising products is becoming increasingly important in meeting competition and in developing new outlets for dairy products.

The increase in sales of milk and related products has been furthered by the increased use of vending and dispensing machines.

A knowledge of the methods and special characteristics associated with vending and dispensing is important if the dairy industry is to increase sales and develop a greater market for dairy products.

A Survey To Determine The Incidence Of Antibodies Against Q Fever In Persons In Utah, Carl H. Blank May 1957

A Survey To Determine The Incidence Of Antibodies Against Q Fever In Persons In Utah, Carl H. Blank

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Q fever, as a recognized clinical entity, is often referred to as a new disease of man. Pneumonic in character but lacking clean-cut pathognomic characteristics, in all probability Q fever has been confused in the past with influenza, primary atypical pneumonia (1), or included as an undifferentiated disease under "virus pneumonia." Geddis Smith (2), writing in 1941, stated:

...influenza, pneumonia, "pleurisy", or bronchitis ... form a nosological jungle in which bacteria and viruses roam at will, despoiling the human race and defying both classification and control. Symptoms overlap and no one knows how many different diseases lurk behind them.

Range Liverstock Nutrition And Its Importance In The Intermountain Region, C. Wayne Cook Dec 1956

Range Liverstock Nutrition And Its Importance In The Intermountain Region, C. Wayne Cook

Faculty Honor Lectures

It has been estimated that about 728 million acres or about 76 percent of the entire land area in the West is used for grazing (Stoddard and Smith 1956). In Utah about 93 percent of the land area or 48,900,000 acres is considered range land (Reuss and Blanch 1951). Although some of this range land is forested, a large area of it can be used only for grazing. Therefore, range livestock production is an important segment of western agriculture.

Before 19'00 most of the animals in the West grazed on the range all year. However, irrigation crop production has expanded …

The Physiological Effects Of Feeding Systox Residues To Cows And Calves, Le Grande C. Ellis May 1956

The Physiological Effects Of Feeding Systox Residues To Cows And Calves, Le Grande C. Ellis

Biology

Since World War II there has been an increase in the number of new insecticides on the market. One group, the organic phosphate insecticides which were developed during the war by Schrader (2, 20), is effective in controlling plant-feeding insects (19). Soon after these new insecticides were introduced, reports indicated that residues remained on forage crops after harvest which could be directly harmful to animals consuming them, or indirectly to man. It has been shown by Biddulph et al. (5) and Sheppard et al. (31) that DDT residues appear in the milk of cows eating DDT treated alfalfa. …

Differences In Frustration Reactions Of A Group Of Preschool Children, Lorraine Storey May 1956

Differences In Frustration Reactions Of A Group Of Preschool Children, Lorraine Storey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In recent years, the concept of frustration has been central in both mental hygiene and social psychology. This is rightfully so. Frustration has been defined as any kind of thwarting or blocking of the motive (4, 7, 14). Any person involved in modern day living is confronted with many types of situations which do actually block or thwart his wishes or drives. A person may be blocked because of conditions existing in the environment, because of personal inadequacies, and because of conflicting drives. Since a person is forced to face so many sources of frustration, the method that he chooses …

Ecology Of Plant Distribution On The Salt-Deserts Of Utah, Dillard H. Gates May 1956

Ecology Of Plant Distribution On The Salt-Deserts Of Utah, Dillard H. Gates

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The reciprocal effects of vegetation and soils have long been a subject of speculation and conjecture. In the management of any natural land area the problem of interpreting vegetational expression is especially important. The effects of native vegetation on soils and the effects of the soil on the vegetation have been studied and observed for many years. The arid-desert range lands have been studied least and as a result are not well understood.

As human populations increase there will be additional need for agricultural production, and these lands may be put to higher use, perhaps even to irrigated crop production. …

A Study Of The Problems Of Teaching Health In Selected High Schools Of Utah, Frank R. Williams May 1956

A Study Of The Problems Of Teaching Health In Selected High Schools Of Utah, Frank R. Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It was the general belief of the developers, curators and protectors of the American form of Government that education of the masses is the backbone of the Democratic way of life practiced in the United States. This belief has been the foundation for the development of broad curriculums, expanded facilities and increased enrollment in teacher training institutions; especially since the beginning of World War II. The teacher shortage so prevalent in the United States at present has aroused the public and educators alike to concern about the welfare of the teacher, and the schooling of the child.

A Comparison Of Fluid Milk Processing 6 And 3 Days Per Week In One Small Plant, Utah 1953, John L. Willis May 1956

A Comparison Of Fluid Milk Processing 6 And 3 Days Per Week In One Small Plant, Utah 1953, John L. Willis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many of the fluid milk processing plants in Utah are relatively small. The typical small plant in Utah is generally family operated with some hired help. Although most of the small plants are individually owned, some are operated as partnerships. Often the same man picks-up, processes, and then delivers the milk. Some of the processors also own dairy herds. In these cases the same man performs all the functions necessary to carry the milk products from the farm to the consumer's door. It is not uncommon to find the plant owner and manager performing all these duties himself.

A Study Of The Feasibility Of Creating A Unified Public Health Department In Weber County, Utah, Laurence J. Burton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study will be to explore the feasibility of consolidating present public health services within Weber County, Utah into a unified consolidated health department and if such consolidated health department seems desirable to offer an analysis of certain proposals for unification. Public health is a social-political activity by which society attempts to increase longevity and the enjoyment of life.

A Follow-Up Study Of Utah State Agricultural College Graduates In 1948, 1951, And 1954, Who Obtained Secondary Teaching Certificates, Wendell Blair Low May 1956

A Follow-Up Study Of Utah State Agricultural College Graduates In 1948, 1951, And 1954, Who Obtained Secondary Teaching Certificates, Wendell Blair Low

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many educators consider the shortage of qualified teaching personnel as one of the most serious problems in education. In the past this shortage has been primarily confined to the elementary level. However, the United States Department of Education states:

Long-run forecasts of population indicate that employment of secondary teachers should be higher throughout the forty-year period 1960-2000 than in 1950. The long-range trend for a rising proportion of young people to attend high school is expected to continue. Greatly increased Federal and State aid to education might expand enrollments considerably. The trend toward enriching curriculum, offering special subjects, and extending …

Seasonal Distribution Of Mosquitoes In A Mile-Square Area West Of Logan, Utah, Takeshi Miura May 1956

Seasonal Distribution Of Mosquitoes In A Mile-Square Area West Of Logan, Utah, Takeshi Miura

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mosquitoes are one of the most important groups of insects, because of their blood-sucking habit and their ability to transmit a number of serious diseases, such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue, encephalitis, and filiariasis.

The most important mosquito-borne disease in Utah is probably equine encephalomyelitis, which is a serious disease in man, horses, and mules. According to Spendlove and others (1953), this disease occurs every year in Utah:

Cases among horses usually are scattered, but severe horse epidemics in past years have destroyed hundreds of animals. Since this disease in humans is difficult to distinguish from other similar diseases, such …

The Effect Of Bicarbonate On The Uptake Of Zinc By Plants, Lawrence G. Morrill May 1956

The Effect Of Bicarbonate On The Uptake Of Zinc By Plants, Lawrence G. Morrill

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Zinc deficiencies occur in many fruit orchards in Utah even though the soil contains amounts of zinc that would normally be sufficient for good plant growth. The existing zinc problem in Utah is, therefore, one of availability.

Problems of zinc availability generally occur in the pH range of 6-8. Zinc deficiencies occurring within this pH range are more frequently found on well-aerated soils than on poorly aerated ones with other conditions being the same. It has been shown that carbon dioxide will convert both zinc hydroxide and zinc carbonate into more soluble bicarbonates with the concentration of Zn++ that …

A Study Of The Variability Of Distichlis Stricta Selections From Several Geographical Locations In The Western United States, Arlan Kent Nielson May 1956

A Study Of The Variability Of Distichlis Stricta Selections From Several Geographical Locations In The Western United States, Arlan Kent Nielson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Distichlis stricts as indicated by the available literature is rather unpalatable, but has the ability to grow vigorously on wet, saline, or alkali soils where more palatable species will not survive. D. stricts can be eradicated quickly where drainage and cultivation can be practices, but there are thousands of acres in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Argentina where cultivation or drainage are impractical or impossible.

On such problem soils, where the majority of the vegetation consists largely of D. stricts, a great deal of benefit would be derived from any improvement in the forage quality of this species. …
