Effects Of Cannulation, Bst Administration And Protein Degradability On Rumen And Duodenal Characteristics And Milk Production Response In Holstein Dairy Cows, Margaret D. Winsryg

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bovine somatotropin (bST) is a protein synthesized at the base of the brain and released by the pituitary gland into the circulatory system. BST is transported by the circulatory system and absorbed only by cells of target organs that possess cell surface receptors for the protein (11, 41). Its effect is initiated via a protein receptor initiation and cyclic AMP cascade. This effect on the cell continues well past the degradation of the bST molecule. BST is likely transported into the cell, where it is degraded. Its constituent blocks, amino acids, are used to synthesize new proteins or converted to …

The purpose of this study was to examine a sample of LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) adolescents from 9th - 12th grade to analyze how they spend their time on a given Sunday. The intent of the paper was to determine if adolescent time use was influenced by such independent variable as gender, age, living arrangements, work, school, perceptions of their family, and what time of the day the youth attend Sunday meetings on a specific Sunday. A questionnaire was given to 272 students who attend released school time seminary at a particular high school in Utah. …

Energetic Requirements For Bacterial Protein Export, John Andrew Corbett May 1990

Energetic Requirements For Bacterial Protein Export, John Andrew Corbett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bacterial protein export involves the translocation of precursor proteins across the inner cytoplasmic membrane. Over 100 proteins are exported from Escherichia coli. This study showed that energy in the form of ATP and membrane gradient energy is essential for the export of leucine specific binding protein and β-lactamase precursors. Ionophores or combinations of ionophores (SF6847, valinomycin/nigericin and valinomycin/monensin) which dissipate protonmotive force inhibit protein export. Valinomycin alone also inhibits export, but not as well as reagents which dissipate protonmotive force. Nigericin or monensin alone slightly stimulate protein export. These results suggest that the transmembrane electrical potential (∆Ψ) is the …

Encouraging Navajo Parents' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Wanda Benale May 1990

Encouraging Navajo Parents' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Wanda Benale

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The transition of Navajo Indian children from boarding schools to public schools has brought about the challenge of involving parents in their children's education. These people have previously been accustomed to having the education of their children left to the distant schools, with little opportunity for parental involvement. As a consequence, it is often difficult to get these parents to accept the schools' invitations to participate in conferences and other activities when parental involvement is important.

This study reviewed all of the reports that could be found of programs involving Indians and non-Indian parents in their children's education. These programs …

Techniques For The Microanalysis Of Higher Plants With Particular Reference To Silicon In Cryofixed Wheat Tissues, M. J. Hodson, A. G. Sangster

Scanning Microscopy

The applications of x-ray microanalysis in research into silicon in higher plants are reviewed, recent developments are assessed, and new data are presented. Conventionally prepared material [air or freeze drying for scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and glutaraldehyde/osmium tetroxide fixation for transmission electron microscopy (TEM)) has been studied using both wavelength and energy dispersive microanalysis. These techniques are reliable provided that the deposited form of silica is the major focus of investigation. Recently, studies concerning the soluble, mobile forms of silica, and the ionic environment at deposition sites have been initiated. In these investigations x -ray microanalysis has been carried out …

Studies Of Epithelial Electrolyte Transport By Marker Ions, A. Dörge, R. Rick Mar 1990

Studies Of Epithelial Electrolyte Transport By Marker Ions, A. Dörge, R. Rick

Scanning Microscopy

The paper reviews several recent studies in which marker ions, such as Rb and Br, were used to identify ion transport pathways and membrane properties in epithelia. In the frog skin epithelium, using Rb as a substitute for K, Cl transport mechanisms across the basolateral membranes of principal cells were studied. The data suggest that intracellular Cl is maintained above electrochemical equilibrium by an Na-K-2Cl cotransport system which, under non-stimulated conditions, is normally quiescent.

In toad and frog skins, the route of transepithelial Cl movement was investigated. A subpopulation of mitochondria-rich cells demonstrated a ready exchange of Br with the …

A Comparison Of Three Low Temperature Techniques Of Specimen Preparation For X-Ray Microanalysis, R. J. Condron, A. T. Marshall Mar 1990

A Comparison Of Three Low Temperature Techniques Of Specimen Preparation For X-Ray Microanalysis, R. J. Condron, A. T. Marshall

Scanning Microscopy

A quantitative x-ray microanalytical comparison of intracellular ion concentrations in two tissues (chicken kidney and duck nasal salt gland), prepared as bulk frozen-hydrated, embedded freeze-dried and freeze-substituted samples, shows that there are similar losses of K+ and Pin freeze-dried and freeze-substituted samples in both types of tissue. It is suggested that this may be due to extraction by chloride-free Spurr's resin during infiltration. There was also an indication of an increase in Na+ concentration in freeze-dried samples.

In chicken kidney cells there was a reduction in Mg++ and Ca++ concentrations in freeze-dried and freeze-substituted samples and …

A Documented List Of Critical Issues Facing American Families, Glen O. Jenson Ph.D, Ted W. Warstadt Mar 1990

A Documented List Of Critical Issues Facing American Families, Glen O. Jenson Ph.D, Ted W. Warstadt

All Archived Publications

Many individual problems are known to be related to dysfunctional families such as substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, family violence, childhood and adolescent depression, runaways, early teen sexual acting out, civil disobedience, and other family and social problems. Attitudes expressed by people in the 1980s have shown an increased emphasis for meaningful, fulfilling, interpersonal relationships. This focus will likely continue in the following decade. This type of fulfillment is sought more within the family than in other societal institutions.

Juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. (ca. 80 mm S.L.) stocked into mid-elevation reservoirs in Utah are vulnerable to predation from piscivorous fish and birds. I determined how effectively juvenile trout used cover to avoid these predators by using direct observations (snorkel transects) on habitat selection in two reservoirs. Observations of juvenile trout were conducted within five weeks of stocking in 1988 and 1989. During the day juvenile trout were abundant in complex inshore habitats. Juvenile trout actively fed during the day but the time of peak feeding was variable. Large Daphnia made of > 95% of the diet of juvenile trout. …

Crystal Growth Of Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate And Calcium Carbonate From Dilute Solutions, Sergio Deganello, Livia Di Franco Jan 1990

Crystal Growth Of Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate And Calcium Carbonate From Dilute Solutions, Sergio Deganello, Livia Di Franco

Scanning Microscopy

By controlling evaporation, calcium carbonate (calcite) is precipitated together with calcium oxalate monohydrate from equimolar (1 x 10-5 M) solutions of calcium chloride and sodium oxalate under decreasing (37.5° - 32.7°C) and increasing temperature (22°-42°, 22°-45°, 22°-50°C), and initial pH's of 6.6 and 6, respectively. If, however, the pH of the solutions is, respectively, 8 and 8.5 and the temperature is 32°C, oxalate breaks down to carbonate and calcium precipitates solely as calcite. This process materializes as the pH of both solutions initially adjusts to about 7.5. Both the quality and the size of the crystals of calcite and …

Particle Induced X-Ray Emission Elemental Analysis: Sample Preparation For A Versatile Instrumental Method, N. F. Mangelson, M. W. Hill Jan 1990

Particle Induced X-Ray Emission Elemental Analysis: Sample Preparation For A Versatile Instrumental Method, N. F. Mangelson, M. W. Hill

Scanning Microscopy

Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has found extensive application as a multi-element analysis tool. The energetic nature of both the incident particle beam and the emitted characteristic X-rays has lead to considerable versatility in regard to samples which may be analyzed by the PIXE technique. This paper does not deal with the theory, equipment, or data analysis for PIXE, but it should bring to the reader a broad perspective of methods for sample preparation and should point the way into the literature where more complete details are given. Both physical and chemical processes for sample preparation are outlined. Preparation often …

Evidence That A Major Portion Of Cellular Potassium Is "Bound", Ivan L. Cameron, W. Elaine Hardman, Keithley E. Hunter, Christine Haskin, Nancy K. R. Smith, Gary D. Fullerton

Scanning Microscopy

In this report we briefly review recent evidence which shows that a substantial proportion of intracellular K+ is "bound" or perturbed from the physicochemical properties expected in dilute aqueous solutions. In addition, we present evidence from electron probe x-ray microanalysis of thin cryosections of cells which indicates that the binding of K+ to anionic groups either carboxyl groups (HCO2) on proteins or to phosphate groups in creatine phosphate (CrP) , in adenosine triphosphate, (ATP), in protein and in nucleic acids, are the main determinants of the maintenance of (as differentiated from the generated of) the well …

Porosity, Specific Gravity And Air Content In Blue Cheeses, K. M.K. Kebary, H. A. Morris

Food Structure

Porosity and specific gravity were determined in Blue cheeses made from (A) homogenized 14% fat pasteurized cream standardized to 3.9% fat with pasteurized skim milk, (B) homogenized 14% fat raw cream standardized to 3.9% fat with raw skim milk, and (C) pasteurized milk (3.9% fat). There were no significant differences between cheeses made from (A) a nd (B) in porosity and specific gravity. Cheeses made from (A) and (8) had greater porosity, lower specific gravity and more, but smaller holes than cheese made from (C). The negative linear relation ship between porosity and specific gravity, and the insignificant differences in …

The Use Of The Scanning Electron Microscope In Investigating Container Corrosion By Canned Foods And Beverages, E. J. Helwig, H. E. Biber Jan 1990

The Use Of The Scanning Electron Microscope In Investigating Container Corrosion By Canned Foods And Beverages, E. J. Helwig, H. E. Biber

Food Structure

Over the years the canned food industry has experienced corrosion problems with some foods packed in metal containers. Although most of these are minor, the net e ffect can represent significant financial loss in the industry. It is important to determine the cause of these problems, not only to assign proper responsibility but a lso to avoid recurrence of the probl em in the future. The scanning electron microscope SEM, coupled with energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis, plays an important role in these studies. Stress corrosion cracking in packs of tuna and potatoes, pitting corrosion related to light colored fruits, and …

Plasmons In Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Electron Spectra, R. H. Ritchie, A. Howie, P. M. Echenique, G. J. Basbas, T. L. Ferrell, J. C. Ashley

Scanning Microscopy

A general self-energy formulation of the interaction between an electron in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and a localized target is given. We prove a theorem relating the probability of energy transfer to that calculated classically. Local dielectric theory of target excitation for various geometries is discussed. The problem of localization of initially unlocalized excitations in the valence band of solids is treated by transforming cross sections differential in momentum transfer into dependence on an impact parameter variable. We are thereby able to account for experimental data in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that show high spatial resolution.

Intermolecular Potential Of The Methane Dimer And Trimer, M. M. Szczesniak, G. Chalansinski, S. M. Cybulski, Steve Scheiner Jan 1990

Intermolecular Potential Of The Methane Dimer And Trimer, M. M. Szczesniak, G. Chalansinski, S. M. Cybulski, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The Heitler–London (HL) exchange energy is responsible for the anisotropy of the pair potential in methane. The equilibrium dimer structure is that which minimizes steric repulsion between hydrogens belonging to opposite subsystems. Dispersion energy, which represents a dominating attractive contribution, displays an orientation dependence which is the mirror image of that for HL exchange. The three‐body correction to the pair potential is a superposition of HL and second‐order exchange nonadditivities combined with the Axilrod–Teller dispersion nonadditivity. A great deal of cancellation between these terms results in near additivity of methane interactions in the long and intermediate regions.

Environmental Assessment Seminoe-Kortes Transmission Line/Substation Consolidation Project, Carbon County, Wyoming, U.S. Department Of Energy Jan 1990

Environmental Assessment Seminoe-Kortes Transmission Line/Substation Consolidation Project, Carbon County, Wyoming, U.S. Department Of Energy

Environmental Assessments (WY)

The existing switchyards at Western Area Power Administration's (WESTERN) Seminoe and Kortes facilities, located approximately 40 miles northeast of Rawlins, Carbon County, Wyoming, were constructed in 1939 and 1951, respectively. The circuit breakers at these facilities are beyond or approaching their service life and need to be replaced. In addition, the switchyards have poor access for maintenance and replacement of equipment, and their locations create potential for oil spills into the North Platte River. WESTERN is proposing to consolidate the switchyard facilities into one new substation to provide easier access, restore proper levels of system reliability, and decrease the potential …

An Enzyme/Surfactant Treatment And Filtration Technique For The Retrieval Of Listeria Monocytogenes From Ice Cream Mix, Kelly-Ann Hale, Stephanie Doores, Rosemary A. Walsh Jan 1990

An Enzyme/Surfactant Treatment And Filtration Technique For The Retrieval Of Listeria Monocytogenes From Ice Cream Mix, Kelly-Ann Hale, Stephanie Doores, Rosemary A. Walsh

Food Structure

This study combines an enzyme/surfactant treatment with centrifugal ion and prefiltration to solubilize food constituents in a dairy product containing listeria monocytogenes, remove the constituents by a second filtration and examine the isolated bacteria under the scanning electron microscope. Treatment of an ice cream mix with a combined 2% (w/w} trypsin and 2% (w/w) Tween 80 so lution for 20 minutes at 35 °C resulted i n proteolysis of the dairy mix without lysing the bacteria. Centrifugation at 4300 x g for 20 minutes at 5°C concentrated the bacteria in the form of a pellet which was subsequently purified through …
