The Structure Of Urinary Catheter Encrusting Bacterial Biofilms, D. J. Stickler, J. King, J. Nettleton, C. Winters
Cells and Materials
A major complication of long-term urethral catheterization is catheter blockage by encrustation. We have examined 20 encrusted catheters and in each case crystal formation was associated with the presence of bacterial biofilms on the luminal surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis indicated the presence of struvite and hydroxyapatite in the biofilms. Urease producing bacteria were colonizing 16 of the catheters. Proteus mirabilis was the commonest species being recovered from ten of the catheters. These results support the hypothesis that catheter encrustation has a similar etiology to that of infection-induced urinary stones and confirm that the important target for any …

Rangeland Monitoring: Analysis, Interpretation, And Evaluation, United States Bureau Of Land Management
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The collection of monitoring data results in quantitative and qualitative information obtained from measurements or estimates of the natural resources. These data are most valuable when their meaning is defined and presented in understandable terms to the resource manager. This is the analysis, interpretation, and evaluation process. The result is the documentation of conclusions on the progress of management to accomplish specific management objectives. Such conclusions are used for management and planning purposes, and in particular, for determining managment actions and establishing new or revised management objectives.

Snapshot In Time, Repeat Photography On The Boise National Forest 1870-1992, United States Department Of Agriculture
Forestry
A forest health crisis of unprecedented proportions faced the Boise National Forest in the early years of the 1990's. Six years of drought set the stage for catastrophic outbreaks of insect and disease in the various tree communities of the forest, and wildfires burned hotter and more frequently than at any time in the past. In our often desperate search for ways to moderate the crisis, we turned to the notion of repeat photography to try to understand what happened in the past and how things are different now. We hoped to find some clues that would help shape management …

Many programs in the United States have undertaken to show the benefits to students of integrating academic disciplines. The TEC-Lab project, however, is unique among them because of its innovative approach. First, the TEC-Lab students are in senior high school, grades 9 to 12, while most innovative efforts are concentrated at the elementary and middle school levels. Second, the TEC-Lab approach uses technology as a means of meeting the usual academic requirements, rather than attempting to integrate the other academic areas into technology. The difference between these two approaches is subtle but profound. The first semester of the project was …

Age Related Changes In The Microstructure Of Mozzarella Cheese, L. J. Kiely, P. S. Kindstedt, G. M. Hendricks, J. E. Levis, J. J. Yun, D. M. Barbano
Food Structure
Changes that occurred in the microstructure of low-moisture, part skim Mozzarella made with a mixed starter consisting of Streptococcus salivarius ssp. thermophilus and Lacwbacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus and coagulated with fermentation -produced chymosin , were examined during 50 days of ripening at 4 °C. Im mediately after manufacture (day 3), a homogeneous and continuous phase of amorphous paracasein represented a three-dimensional protein network in the cheese. A large number of irregularly shaped and sized microcavi ties were present. During 50 days of aging , an increase in the porosity of the defatted paracasein matrix was apparent. These changes were coincidental …

Distribution And Intracellular Localization Of Titanium In Plants After Titanium Treatment, G. Kelemen, A. Keresztes, E. Bacsy, M. Feher, P. Fodor, I. Pais
Food Structure
The physiological role of titanium in plants has not been elucidated yet, but a higher rate of growth , greater chlorophyll content and higher productivity, among others , may be attributed to this element. We have investigated the distribution of titanium in wheat seedlings after Titavit (a Ti ·ascorbate containing plant conditioner) treatment applied either through the leaf or through the root. In field experiments, we also sprayed spinach plants with Titavit. We have found a practically unidirectional tran slocation of Ti from the shoot into the root, and a preferential local ization of Ti in the nuclear cell fraction …

Whey Proteins As Microencapsulating Agents. Microencapsulation Of Anhydrous Milkfat - Structure Evaluation, M. Rosenberg, S. L. Young
Food Structure
Microencapsulation of milkfat may open new fields of application for this milk constituent by transforming it into dry and stable powder. Research has been undertaken to study the microstructure of whey protein based, anhydrous milkfat-containing, spray-dried microcapsules. Whey protein concentrates of 50% and 75% protein and whey protein isolate were evaluated as microencapsulating agents (wall materials). The effects of wall composition, fat load , and drying conditions on the capsule's structure were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Spherical capsules with smooth , wrinkle-free surfaces were observed in all cases. Whey protein isolate-based microcapsules dried at a temperature higher than …
A Tutorial And Comprehensive Bibliography On The Identification Of Foreign Bodies Found In Food, D. F. Lewis
A Tutorial And Comprehensive Bibliography On The Identification Of Foreign Bodies Found In Food, D. F. Lewis
Food Structure
The paper presents a philosophical approach to the investigation of foreign body incidents in food. The suggested procedure has similarities with "key" procedures used for taxonomy. However, the wide diversity of materials encountered and the need to determine something of the history of the offending item demands modifications to this process. The categorisation may be made on instinct or experience, and appropriate confirmatory tests will be applied in the light of the initial categorisation. Cardinal rules are proposed: firstly , the receipt of the items should be well documented; and secondly, the initial observations should be as non-destructive as possible. …

The Effect Of Peo Ratio On Degradation, Calcification And Bone Bonding Of Peo/Pbt Copolymer (Polyactive), C. A. Van Blitterswijk, J. V.D. Brink, H. Leenders, D. Baaker
Cells and Materials
In this study, we evaluated the effect of PEO/ PBT proportion on the behavior of a range of PEO/ PBT segmented copolymers (Polyactive) during subcutaneous and intrabony implantation in the rat. It was demonstrated that varying the PEO proportion affected degradation, calcification and bone-bonding. The PEO/PBT 70/30 and 60/40 showed extensive degradation after 1 year, PEO/PBT 55145 an intermediate degradation, and the 40/60 and 30170 copolymers showed little and hardly any degradation respectively. PEO content also affected the degree of calcification . PEO/PBT 70/30 showed extensive and early calcification whereas almost no calcification was seen with PEO/PBT 30170. Since calcified …
Microstructural Enhancement Of Dental Composite And Ceramic Materials By Plasma Etching, H. J. Mueller, M. S. Bapna
Microstructural Enhancement Of Dental Composite And Ceramic Materials By Plasma Etching, H. J. Mueller, M. S. Bapna
Cells and Materials
Radio frequency plasma etching of a selected number of dental materials , including glass filled polymeric composites, alumina reinforced ceramic, glass ionomer, and zinc oxide eugenol enhanced microstructural detail for scanning electron microscopy analyses. All four plasmas, argon , oxygen, carbon tetrafluoride (CF4), and CF4 + 4% 0 2 , proved effective, but the latter was the most effective. The etching of all materials , except the ceramic, was accomplished by the selective removal of a polymeric component. For the glass filled composites , this involved removal of the Bis-GMA matrix resin, leaving the filler particles in relief. For a …
