Albumin Affinity Biomaterial Surfaces, James R. Keogh, John W. Eaton Jan 1996

Albumin Affinity Biomaterial Surfaces, James R. Keogh, John W. Eaton

Cells and Materials

Recently, considerable progress has been made in designing biomaterial surfaces which possess enhanced albumin affinity. Two derivatization methods for producing albumin binding biomaterial surfaces, based on an albumin affinity dye, cibacron blue, have been developed. Both surface derivatization methods were found to enhance the binding of albumin to an implant grade polyetherurethane. Evaluations of the enhanced albumin affinity demonstrated the binding to be both selective and reversible. Surfaces having such enhanced albumin affinity were found to be minimally thrombogenic and to discourage the adhesion of bacteria which might otherwise cause device-centered infections. We conclude that albumin affinity surfaces, such as …

Biofilm Mediated Calculus Formation In The Urinary Tract, Robert J. C. Mclean, David J. Stickler, J. Curtis Nickel Jan 1996

Biofilm Mediated Calculus Formation In The Urinary Tract, Robert J. C. Mclean, David J. Stickler, J. Curtis Nickel

Cells and Materials

Mineralization and subsequent calculus formation is a common complication of biofilm infections. In the urinary tract, these infected calculi often arise from infections by urease-producing bacteria. Ammonia, liberated by bacterial urease activity, increases urine pH, resulting in the precipitation of Ca and Mg as carbonateapatite {Ca10(PO4,CO3)6(OH,CO3)2} and struvite (NH4MgP04·6H2O). These minerals become entrapped in the organic matrix which surrounds the infecting organisms and ultimately grow into mature calculi. When the causative organisms grow on urinary catheters and stents, the resulting mineralization can …

Emery County High-Value Agribusiness Diversification Study, Deevon Bailey, Yasmin Adam, Norris J. Stenquist Jan 1996

Emery County High-Value Agribusiness Diversification Study, Deevon Bailey, Yasmin Adam, Norris J. Stenquist

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This research examined the economic feasibility of various value-added alternatives of major crop and livestock enterprises in Emery County, Utah. The results suggest that building a stockyard facility where feeder cattle could be sorted and pooled for sale would be a net economic benefit to the county. Building a 400-head capacity beefpacking plant would likely not be feasible in Emery County. Ajamljelly plant would likely be profitable ifit were built in Green River and its products sold in Moab as well as in the Green River area.

Wildlife Damage Management (Wdm) In The Northern Utah Adc District, United States Department Of Agriculture, Animal And Plant Health Inspection Service, Animal Damage Control Jan 1996

Wildlife Damage Management (Wdm) In The Northern Utah Adc District, United States Department Of Agriculture, Animal And Plant Health Inspection Service, Animal Damage Control

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Across the United States, wildlife habitat has been substantially changed as human populations expand and land is used for human needs. These human uses and needs often compete with wildlife which increases the potential for conflicting human/wildlife interactions. In addition, segments of the public strive for protection for all wildlife; this protection can create localized conflicts between human and wildlife activities.

Perturbations Of Periosteel Bone During Healing: Effect Of Non-Weight Bearing, Helen E. Gruber, Mary E. Kirchen, John R. Sweeney, William E. Anderson, G. June Marshall Jan 1996

Perturbations Of Periosteel Bone During Healing: Effect Of Non-Weight Bearing, Helen E. Gruber, Mary E. Kirchen, John R. Sweeney, William E. Anderson, G. June Marshall

Cells and Materials

Weight bearing (WB) is an important factor influencing bone remodelling. The present study evaluates the effects of weight bearing and non-weight bearing (S) (achieved by tail suspension and hindlimb elevation) on the healing of a fibular osteotomy in adult male rats. After 9, 18 or 36 days under WB or S conditions, periosteum near the callus formed at the osteotomy site was compared to periosteum of the contralateral fibula (which did not receive an osteotomy) or to periosteum of fibula of control animals which did not receive an osteotomy. Data show that periosteal bone healing is sensitive to alterations in …

Validation Of Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry As A Method To Standardize Backscattered Electron Images Of Bone, E. G. Vajda, R. D. Bloebaum, J. G. Skedros Jan 1996

Validation Of Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry As A Method To Standardize Backscattered Electron Images Of Bone, E. G. Vajda, R. D. Bloebaum, J. G. Skedros

Cells and Materials

The use of backscattered electron (BSE) imaging as a tool for the qualitative measurement of mineral content in bone has been well documented. The challenge still remains to develop BSE imaging as a tool for quantitative mineral content analysis in bone. The limiting factor has been the ability to standardize the BSE signal within and between laboratories. Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDX) has been proposed as a method to standardize the BSE operating environment. The goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between EDX-determined wt.% Ca measurements and BSE graylevels. A comparison with traditional ash content measurements will …

Subdiscipline-Specific Journal Rankings In Economics, Christopher B. Barrett, Aliakbar Olia, Deevon Bailey Jan 1996

Subdiscipline-Specific Journal Rankings In Economics, Christopher B. Barrett, Aliakbar Olia, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

In light of widespread specialization of research and teaching, it seems appropriate to supplement the existing general rankings of economics journals with subdiscipline-specific rankings. That is the primary objective of this paper. The availability of subdiscipline-specific rankings also permits both (i) alternative journal ranking methods for the general discipline that account for the breadth of a journal's impact across specialized fields, and (ii) estimation of the relative weights implicitly associated with each field in traditional disciplinary journal rankings. The results are robust to the exclusion of self-citations.

Pluralism, Science, Ethics, And The Intersecting Spheres Of Social Concerns And Environmentalism, Christopher B. Barrett, Raymond E. Grizzle Jan 1996

Pluralism, Science, Ethics, And The Intersecting Spheres Of Social Concerns And Environmentalism, Christopher B. Barrett, Raymond E. Grizzle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds on alternative perspectives offered by the environmental and sustainability traditions to advance a holistic yet practical conceptual model that explicitly integrates social and environmental concerns. Ours is a pluralistic approach founded on synthesis. Employing the economic concept of path dependence, we emphasize that there exist multiple paths society can follow in environmental ethics and policy, but that onc e one has been chosen, implicitly or explicitly, there may be little opportunity to reverse such choices. Hence, the importance of process to the pursuit of social and environmental objectives.

The Economic And Ethical Ambiguities Of African Debt Forgiveness, Christopher B. Barrett Jan 1996

The Economic And Ethical Ambiguities Of African Debt Forgiveness, Christopher B. Barrett

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Subsaharan African states clearly labor under an extraordinary weight of external debt. A strong groundswell of opinion has fonned behind debt forgiveness efforts. The plight of Africa's poor demands serious response from creditors and donors, not bo mention their own governments. yet the common economic arguments for debt relief find little empirical support in SSA. In particular, there is no evidence of debt overhang serving as a tax on investment or GDP growth. The real problem of external debt in SSA is the heavy marginal tax it levies on current account receipts. Surely this contributes to persistent balance-of-payments crises. The …

An Analysis Of Iodine Deficiency Disorder And Eradication Strategies In The High Atlas Mountains Of Morocco, Elizabeth Anne Oldham, Christopher B. Barrett, Sabah Benjelloun, Brahim Ahanou Jan 1996

An Analysis Of Iodine Deficiency Disorder And Eradication Strategies In The High Atlas Mountains Of Morocco, Elizabeth Anne Oldham, Christopher B. Barrett, Sabah Benjelloun, Brahim Ahanou

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The population of the Ounein Valley in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco is at high risk of iodine deficiency. We investigated local children's iodine deficiency and goiterpattems as well as food consumption habits through a household survey. Median urinary iodine content and goiter analysis both reflect moderate iodine deficiency. Total fish consumption has a statistically significant, positive effect on urinary iodine content. Fish consumption, like that of salt, is closely related to market access. Respondents are uniformly unaware of the dietary etiology of goiter. An effective strategy to reduce the high incidence of iodine deficiency disorder among children in …

Immigration To Utah Communities: The Role Of Agriculture And Rural Development, Dawn D. Thilmany Jan 1996

Immigration To Utah Communities: The Role Of Agriculture And Rural Development, Dawn D. Thilmany

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The relatively small agricultural sector in Utah has meant there were relatively few migrant farmworkers and, thus, Hispanics in the state. Given the notable economic growth in recent years, the tight labor market, and the demographic and employment trends in Utah, the significant increase in Hispanic settlement in Utah may not be surprising. This study analyzes population and employment growth in rural Utah among Hispanics and presents two brief case studies of specific communities and industries. The results clearly illustrate the emerging issues associated with the changing face of rural America in the Intermountain West.

Health Care Pricing Strategies: A Case Study Of Orthopedics In Utah, Jose C. Blanco, Christopher Fawson Jan 1996

Health Care Pricing Strategies: A Case Study Of Orthopedics In Utah, Jose C. Blanco, Christopher Fawson

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper attempts to evaluate the underlying the economic incentives for different health care pricing schemes currently utilized in U.S. and Canadian health care. The paper motivates the idea that medical providers have strong economic incentives to introduce new technology and undertake invasive surgical procedures as often as possible, as opposed to treating patients conservatively.

The specific case of orthopedics in the state of Utah is studied. A supply side model of physician behavior is used to study the evolution of reimbursement levels from payers per surgical procedure. The results suggest that physicians have acted strategically by presenting more procedures …

These resources include recreation, range, timber, minerals, watershed, fish and wildlife, wilderness and natural, scenic, scientific and cultural values.

The Yellowed Archives Of Yellowcake, Ken Silver Jan 1996

The Yellowed Archives Of Yellowcake, Ken Silver

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Extensive historical documentation of exposures and releases at government-owned energy facilities is a unique and valuable resource for analyzing and communicating health risks. Facilities at all stages of the atomic fuel cycle were the subject of numerous industrial hygiene, occupational health, and environmental assessments during the Cold War period. Uranium mines and mills on the Colorado Plateau were investigated as early as the 1940s. One such facility was the mill in Monticello, Utah, which began operation as a vanadium extraction plant in 1943 and was later adapted to recover uranium from camotite ores. The mill ceased operation in 1960. The …
