Airport To University West-East Corridor Study Salt Lake City, Utah Final Environmental Impact Statement, U.S. Department Of Transportation Federal Transit Administration And The Utah Transit Authority

Elusive Documents

Based upon coordination with public and government agencies, combined with evaluation of technical considerations, the Wasatch Front Regional Council has identified a Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems as the preferred alternative to serve the Airport to University Transportation Corridor of Salt Lake City, Utah. The 10.9 mile west-east corridor will be constructed from the Salt Lake City International Airport, through the Central Business District (CBD) to the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. It will interface with the existing north-south LRT line at 400 South and Main Street, and at South Temple and 400 West. The West-East LRT project will …

Influence Of Capsular And Ropy Exopolysaccharide-Producing Strepococcus Thermophilus On Mozzarella Cheese And Cheese Whey, B. L. Peterson, R. I. Dave, Donald J. Mcmahon, C. J. Oberg, Jeff Broadbent

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

We investigated the effect of capsular and ropy exopolysaccharide-producing Streptococcus thermophilus starter bacteria on Mozzarella cheese functionality and whey viscosity. Mozzarella cheeses were manufactured with Lactobacillus helveticus LH100 paired with one of four S. thermophilus strains: MR-1C, a bacterium that produces a capsular exopolysaccharide; MTC360, a strain that secretes a ropy exopolysaccharide; TAO61, a nonexopolysaccharide-producing commercial cheese starter; and DM10, a nonencapsulated, exopolysaccharide-negative mutant of strain MR-1C. As expected, cheese moisture levels were significantly higher in Mozzarella cheeses made with exopolysaccharide-positive versus exopolysaccharide-negative streptococci, and melt properties were better in the higher moisture cheeses. Whey viscosity measurements showed that unconcentrated …

Preliminary Analysis Of The Management Situation Summary, Wasatch-Cache National Forest, April 1999, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

The National Forest Management Act (NFMA) of 1976 (NFMA P.L. 94-588) required each National Forest to develop National Forest Land and Resource Management Plans (Forest Plans), and to update or "revise" them when conditions have significantly changed or at least every 15 years. The Wasatch-Cache National Forest completed its current Forest Plan in 1985 (USDA Forest Service 1985). To comply with NFMA a revision needs to be completed by the end of 2000. In 1997, Congress prohibited expenditure of funds on formal Forest Plan revision. In 1998 prohibitions were lifted for 14 national forests nationwide. The Wasatch-Cache National Forest was …

Economies Of Scale In Public Education: An Econometric Analysis, Kalyan Chakraborty, Basudeb Biswas, W. Cris Lewis Jan 1999

Economies Of Scale In Public Education: An Econometric Analysis, Kalyan Chakraborty, Basudeb Biswas, W. Cris Lewis

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper investigates the sources of scale economies in the production of public education. The relationship between the average cost of producing educational output and other school characteristics, including school and district size, is estimated using a neoclassical cost function. The empirical analysis uses panel data from Utah school districts, and estimates the function using the covariance and error component models after making necessary corrections for heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation. The evidence indicates that there are significant scale economies associated with both school and district sizes.

Relationships Economics, L. Dwight Israelsen, Richard L. Ratliff Jan 1999

Relationships Economics, L. Dwight Israelsen, Richard L. Ratliff

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The concept of the importance of healthy relationships in the economic system can be traced back to Adam Smith's writings of the last quarter of the 18th century. Smith believed that self-interest, the profit motive, competition, and frequent human interaction in the marketplace, within the framework of the rule of law, would induce market participants to develop moral virtues of honesty, generosity, and trust. Sellers who failed to develop these attributes would lose customers to competitors. The loss of customers would lead to business failure. Because sellers also had alternatives, buyers who failed to maintain good relationships with sellers would …

X-Ray Diffraction And Scanning Electron Microscopy Analyses Of A Gallium-Based Dental Restorative Alloy, Randa E. Shaker, William A. Brantley, Qiang Wu, John C. Mitchell

Cells and Materials

Specimens of a gallium-based dental alloy were prepared with different condensation techniques, with and without the removal of a surface layer, and after aging for 2 hours at 50°, 100° and 150°C. X-ray diffraction at times ranging from 10 minutes to 1 day showed the development of the four matrix phases (ß-Sn, CuGa2, Ga28Ag72, and In4Ag9) during the setting reaction. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination of specimens loaded to failure revealed brittle fracture, with greater porosity for hand-condensed specimens, and provided insight into crack propagation processes. Aging increased …

In Vitro Comparative Biocompatibility Testing Of Carbofilm Coated And Uncoated Polyetherimide For Cardiovascular Application, M. Bosetti, S. Mazzarelli, L. Nicolais, L. Ambrosio, M. Cannas

Cells and Materials

When blood contacts the surface of a material, several processes take place including the activation of coagulation and immune systems. The aim of this work is to study in vitro the biological reactions seen from the point of view of hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility of a new polymer suggested as an artificial surface for cardiovascular applications: Carbofilm® coated polyetherimide (C®PEI) in comparison to polyetherimide (PEI), the uncoated form. PEI and C®PEI showed no signs of acute cytotoxicity although following long term incubation with PEI cytotoxicity was somewhat increased; both materials supported good endothelial cell adhesion with a higher level of cell …

Alas, Poor Ghost!, Gillian Bennett

All USU Press Publications

In the rational modern world, belief in the supernatural seemingly has been consigned to the worlds of entertainment and fantasy. Yet belief in other worldly phenomena, from poltergeists to telepathy, remains strong, as Gillian Bennett's research shows. Especially common is belief in continuing contact with, or the continuing presence of, dead family members. Bennett interviewed women in Manchester, England, asking them questions about ghosts and other aspects of the supernatural. (Her discussion of how her research methods and interview techniques evolved is in itself valuable.) She first published the results of the study in the well-received Traditions of Belief: Women …

Managing To Reduce Nitrate Leaching: What Is In It For The Farmer?, Gilbert D. Miller, Jay C. Andersen

All Archived Publications

Nitrates leached into groundwater may be associated with the following: (1) methemoglobinemia (blue baby) in humans and other mammals; (2)cardiovascular collapse and shock in horses; (3) possibility of cancer (EPA); and (4) eutrophication of water bodies (IFIA) when nitrate contaminated groundwater reaches surface water through wells or springs. Nitrate leaching is not only a possible source of environmental damage but also the loss of an input before it is used in production.

Description Of The Pelagic Zooplankton And Fish Communities Of Lakes Powell And Mead, United States Geological Survey Jan 1999

Description Of The Pelagic Zooplankton And Fish Communities Of Lakes Powell And Mead, United States Geological Survey

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Fishery biologists from Arizona, Nevada, and Utah have been faced with the imposing dilemma of monitoring the pelagic fishery of Lakes Powell and Mead. Standard sampling procedures typically used to monitor shoreline fisheries are simply inadequate for the deep volumes of pelagic habitat found in these two reservoirs. Nearly a decade ago, Arizona and Nevada biologists recommended that hydroacoustics be used to monitor these communities (Persons and Dreyer 1987a,b, NDOW 1994). However, for various reasons an acoustical monitoring program was never fully implemented. This study represents the first attempt to describe the pelagic fishery of either reservoir using acoustic technology.

The Effect Of Mechanical Noise And Natural Sound On Visitor Experiences In Units Of The National Park System, Dr. James Gramann, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This paper reviews research on the effects of mechanical noise and natural sound on visitor experiences in national parks. Three approaches to studying noise impacts are described. Most noise research to date has addressed the impact of air-tour overflights on visitor experiences. these impacts are localized with significant percentages of visitors in some parks reporting interference with natural sounds from aircraft noise. Research also shows that unthreatening natural environments can have significant stress-reducing effects for many people. However, it is unclear if these effects are due to hearing the sounds of nature or to a combination of hearing and seeing …

Water Resources Management Plan: Arches National Park & Canyonlands National Park, Utah, Lynn Cudlip, Kevin Berghoff, David Vana-Miller

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The National Park Service recognizes the importance of preserving, conserving, and protecting water resources within its boundaries. Water resources, whether as large as the Colorado River or as small as a seep in Ernie's Country of Canyonlands National Park, play a distinctive role in linking ecosystems and , in general, provide habitat for a number of organisms. To protect park water resources, the Natinoal Park Service initiated a Water REsources Planning Program in 1991. The planning program provides an essential step in developing a comprehensive understanding of a park's hydrological system and the complex resource issues which surround it. The …

Tools And Techniques Of Quality Management: An Empirical Investigation Of Their Impact On Performance, Vijay R. Kannan, Keah-Choon Tan University Of Nevada, Robert B. Handfield, Soumen Ghosh

Management Faculty Publications

An investigation of quality management at an operational rather than a strategic level is described. Using a survey of senior quality personnel, data were collected on four aspects of quality: management; quality tools; documentation; and the dimensions of quality that companies measure. Regression analysis confirms suggestions in the literature that company performance is positively affected by a culture in which quality is ingrained. Moreover, it identifies positive relationships between several widely used operational practices and company performance.

Supply Chain Management: An Empirical Study Of Its Impact On Performance, Keah-Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, Robert B. Handfield, Soumen Ghosh

Management Faculty Publications

Total quality management, supply base management, customer driven corporate policy, and other elements of supply chain management are frequently cited as strategic options to achieve competitive success in the 1990s. However, attempts by companies to implement these options have not been universally successful and have in many cases failed to yield the desired results. This study presents details of a survey carried out to determine whether particular quality management, supply base management, and customer relations practices can impact corporate performance. In addition it examines the impact analyzing the competitive environment has on performance. Regression models identify several factors that directly …
