Describing the past 30 years of progress toward gender equity in science, one observer wrote: "Although optimistic about future prospects, I must also point out some daunting toads and serpents lurking in the gardens of science. These challenge the rising generation of young scientists to be no less intrepid [that past activists who catalyzed change]" (Herschbach 1999, p. 66). The failure of the sciences to attract and retain women has meant a loss of diversity, as well as a loss of talent and creativity, that impoverishes research viewpoints and limits effective communication of science with diverse sectors of society.

Environmental Assessment : Middle Salt Creek Canyon Access Plan Canyonlands National Park, Utah, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands Research Bibliography
Salt Creek is the largest drainage in the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park. The creek supports one of the most important riparian ecosystems in the park. It is also the heart of the Salt Creek National Register Archeological District, the area with the highest recorded density of archeological sites in the park. A tributary canyon contains the spectacular Angel Arch, a well-known geologic formation that for many years has been a destination point for park visitors. In 1998 the U.S. District Court for the State of Utah ruled, in a lawsuit filed by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, that …

Crop Production On The Lunar Surface Using Solar Fiber Optics: Mitigating The Effects Of Prolonged Darkness With Low Temperature And Low Light, Bruce Bugbee, Julie K. Chard
NASA
Plant metabolism and growth are reduced in low temperature. As metabolism slows, energy requirements are reduced and less light is needed. The temperature should be maintained above the chilling temperature for the plant, which is species dependent. The addition of light will allow the plant to continue to expend energy on maintenance and some growth. Here we show that low light and cool temperatures can be used to maintain plants through the 14.7 days on the dark side of the Moon. Growth resumes immediately after the light is restored.

Carrot Cultivar Evaluation: Soilless Media Vs. Hydroponics, Derek R. Pinnock, Bruce Bugbee
Hydroponics/Soilless Media
Nine cultivars of carrots were grown in a growth chamber. Each cultivar was grown both in hydroponic and soil-less media root-zone for sixty days. Three 30L tubs were used for each root-zone treatment. Three cultivars were planted in each tub, initially at 180 plants m-2 then thinned to 90 plants m-2 on day 45.

Final Environmental Impact Statement C.J. Strike Project Idaho, Ferc Project No. 2055, United States Department Of Energy, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
Final Environmental Impact Statements (ID)
Idaho Power Company (Idaho Power) filed an application for a new license for the existing C.J. Strike Project located on the Snake River and Bruneau River in Owyhee and Elmore Counties, Idaho, between the towns of Grandview and Bruneau. A major issue in this relicensing proceeding is how project-induced water-level fluctuations from load following operations affect aquatic and terrestrial resources. The final environmental impact statement (final EIS) presents the staff's evaluation of the developmental and nondevelopmental consequences of Idaho Power's Proposal and three alternatives: the No-action Alternative, the Idaho Power Proposal with Modifications, and the Run-of River Alternative. We make …

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland
Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This paper builds a dynamic forward-looking model describing the approximate ten-year cattle cycle. The theoretical model improves on existing models by (1) allowing cow-calf operators to make investment decisions on both the cow and calf margins, (2) formally recognizing the age distribution of the capital stock, and (3) considering a mixed scheme of rational and naive expectations. The model.is then calibrated and used to simulate artificial data that endogenously generates ten-year cycles in the total stock of cattle.

Planning For Agriculture In Wisconsin: A Guide Forcommunities, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
The purpose of this guide is to provide you with basic information to help Wisconsin’s rural communities prepare to plan for agriculture. The guide was developed in response to the Comprehensive Planning Law passed under the 1999-2001 Wisconsin State Biennial Budget. This law requires that by January 1, 2010, all programs, actions, and decisions affecting land use must be consistent with the locally adopted comprehensive plan in order for the community to continue making land use related decisions. The law applies to cities, villages, towns, counties, and regional planning commissions.

Leave The Dishes In The Sink: Adventures Of An Activist In Conservative Utah, Alison Comish Thorne
All USU Press Publications
Alison Thorne provides a small-town Utah perspective on the progressive social movements that in the mid to late twentieth century dramatically affected American society. A born activist, Thorne has fought for women's rights, educational reform in public schools and universities, the environment, peace, and the war on poverty. Her efforts have been all the more challenging because of the conservative social and cultural environment in which she has undertaken them. Yet, Thorne, who has deep personal and familial roots in the politically conservative and predominantly Mormon culture of Utah and much of the West, has worked well with people with …

So They Understand, William Schneider
All USU Press Publications
Illustrated with numerous stories collected from Alaska, the Yukon, and South Africa and further enlivened by the author's accessible style and experiences as a longtime oral historian and archivist, So They Understand is a comprehensive study of the special challenges and concerns involved in documenting, representing, preserving, and interpreting oral narratives. The title of the book comes from a quotation by Chief Peter John, the traditional chief of the Tanana Chiefs region in central Alaska: "In between the lines is something special going on in their minds, and that has got to be brought to light, so they understand just …

Cost Of Community Services In Sanpete County, Utah For Fy 1999-2000, E. Bruce Godfrey, Jeff Sanders
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This study is similar to other cost of government services studies that have been conducted in the United States and represents the second study done in Utah. But the results are different from previous studies in two important ways. First, the estimated payment of taxes by the agricultural/rural sector was generally not greater than the estimated services received for the units of government in Sanpete County, Utah, that were studied. Secondly, a recreational home sector was identified with subsequent estimation of revenues paid and government services obtained by this sector. Separation of this sector from the ruraVagricultural sector had a …

A series of coumarin and pyranocoumarin analogues were evaluated in vitro for antiviral efficacy against measles virus (MV), strain Chicago. Of the 22 compounds tested for inhibition, six were found to have selectivity indices greater than 10. These were compounds 5-hydroxy-7-propionyloxy- 4-propylcoumarin (2a), 5,7-bis(tosyloxy)-4- propylcoumarin (7); 5-hydroxy-4-propyl-7-tosyloxy- coumarin (8); 6,6-dimethyl-9-propionyloxy-4- propyl-2H,6H-benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b′]dipyran-2-one (9); 6,6-dimethyl-9-pivaloyloxy-4-propyl-2H,6Hbenzo[ 1,2-b:3,4-b′]dipyran-2-one (10); and 7,8-cis- 10,11,12-trans-4-propyl-6,6,10,11-tetramethyl- 7,8,9-trihydroxy-2H,6H,12H-benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b′:5,6- b′′]tripyran-2-one (18). Three of the active drugs were propyl coumarin analogues (2a, 7 and 8), two were dipyranone or chromeno-coumarins (9 and 10), and one was a benzotripyranone with a coumarin nucleus (18). Some appeared to be rather specific and potent …

Experiential Learning At California Polytechnic State University's Swanton Pacific Ranch, Samantha J. Gill
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
Swanton Pacific Ranch (SPR) is a 3,200-acre fully operational ranch, including forested lands, located 12 miles north of Santa Cruz, California, and 200 miles north of the California Polytechnic State university, San Luis Obispo main campus. Even though the property is 200 miles from the main campus, it is used extensively for experiential learning activities. SPR was first established as a Mexican land grant in 1843. Since that time, it has had several owners and has been a dairy, and had several agricultural operations including growing crops, such as artichokes, brussels sprouts, and also cattle operations. The area was logged …

Undergraduate Student Internships In Natural Resources At Virginia 4-H Educational Centers, Jeff Kirwan, Barry Fox, Barry Garst
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
Virginia has six 4-H educational centers that provide residential camping experiences for over 22,000 youth per year, the second largest 4-H camping program in the United States. These children may have many learning opportunities in the areas of natural resources and outdoor living skills. Beginning in 1995, the Chesapeake Bay Program in cooperation with the Virginia Division of Soil and Water Conservation provided funds for water quality instructors at each of the 4-H Centers. In 1998, the Virginia Forestry Educational Foundation began supporting a similar internship program for undergraduate students to serve as forestry instructors. Nearly 50 undergraduate students have …

Development Of A Program Assessment System At The Suny-Esf Ranger School : The Process, Early Results, And Anticipated Benefits, James M. Savage
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
For the past two years, faculty at the SUNY-ESF Ranger School in Wanakena, New York, have been working with education consultants from Pacific Crest, Inc. to improve the quality of their teaching, their courses, the curriculum, and the Ranger School program in general. The ultimate goal of such efforts is to improve the quality and enhance the success of the school's graduates. The faculty's formalized efforts to improve quality have been focused most recently on the design and implementation of a Program Assessment System (PAS). The PAS developed for the Ranger School clearly articulates the enduring mission of the school, …

Potential Strategies For Managing Utah's Wolf-Livestock Conflicts, T. Adam Switalski, Trey Simmons, Shiree L. Duncan, Andreas S. Chavez, Robert H. Schmidt
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) classifies gray wolf populations as either endangered, threatened, or nonessential / experimental. Therefore, if wolves enter Utah under their current legal classification, the USFWS will be the primary agency responsible for wolf management (see Section 2). For the last 30 years, this agency has been responsible for managing recovering wolf populations in other parts of the United States, both in the Great Lakes and the Rockies. Unfortunately, wolves have come into conflict with livestock in all of their recovery areas. As a result, the USFWS has taken various measures to minimize these …

Biological Aspects Of Wolf Recolonization In Utah, T. Adam Switalski, Trey Simmons, Shiree L. Duncan, Andreas S. Chavez, Robert H. Schmidt
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
Wolves have been one of the most scientifically examined of all wildlife species (Mech, 1995b). Many studies have focused on the effects of wolf reintroductions and recolonization. In this section, we address how wolves may naturally disperse into Utah, highlight areas identified in our habitat model as constituting the most favorable wolf habitat in Utah, estimate potential wolf populations in Utah, and describe what is currently known about the influence of wolves on an ecosystem.
