Agricultural operations produce a variety of particulates and gases that influence air quality. Agriculture, through wind erosion, tillage and harvest operations, burning, diesel-powered machinery and animal production operations, is a source of particulate matter that can enter human lungs and cause pulmonary problems. Animal production operations can be a source of gaseous emissions such as ammonia, odor-causing volatile organic compounds, hydrogen sulfide, greenhouse gases (methane, nitrous oxides) and airborne pathogens. These emissions can negatively impact human health, property values, and the environment. The presence of buildings and other structures often make whole facility measurement capability a requirement for understanding the …

Polymorphism And Growth Behavior Of Low-Trans Fatty Acids Blends Formulated With And Without Emulsifiers, Marina Cerdeira, Silvana Martini, Roberto J. Candal, Maria L. Herrera Jun 2006

Polymorphism And Growth Behavior Of Low-Trans Fatty Acids Blends Formulated With And Without Emulsifiers, Marina Cerdeira, Silvana Martini, Roberto J. Candal, Maria L. Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Polymorphism and growth behavior of blends of a high-melting fraction of milk fat (HMF) and sunflower oil (SFO) formulated with and without the addition of sucrose esters (SE) P-170, P-1670, and S-170 were studied by pulsed 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and polarized light microscopy. The effect of SE on the solid content maximum (S max) or crystallization rate was observed only at low supercooling (values of ΔT below 15°C). The Avrami k n decreased as n values increased, indicating that SE inhibited growth and impeded nucleation. Addition of SFO modified the polymorphic behavior of milk fat, most likely owing …

Use Of Thermal Dissipation Probes To Estimate Water Loss Of Containerized Landscape Trees, Thayne Montague, Roger Kjelgren Jun 2006

Use Of Thermal Dissipation Probes To Estimate Water Loss Of Containerized Landscape Trees, Thayne Montague, Roger Kjelgren

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Granier style thermal dissipation probes (TDPs) have been used to estimate whole plant water use on a variety of tree and vine species. However, studies using TDPs and load cells (gravimetric water loss) to estimate water use of landscape tree species are rare. This research compared gravimetric water loss (extimated with load cells) of four containerized landscape tree species with water loss estimated with TDPs. Over a 66 day period, an experiment compared water loss of three established, 5.0 cm (2 in) caliper poplar (Populus nigra 'Italica') trees in 75-liter (20 gal) containers on load cells to TDP estimated water …

Information Professional Or Caretaker Of "Old Stuff", Daniel Davis

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Do archivists emphasize their role as technicians with specialized skills and knowledge or do they emphasize their role as sort of "semi-pro" historians? This debate has been around since the 1930s and is not likely to be decided any time soon. My argument is that young archivists cannot afford to take an either/or approach and must incorporate elements of both paths or risk obsolescence and/or continued low salaries.

Active Minimization Of Acoustic Energy Density To Attenuate Radiated Noise From Enclosures, Andrew Boone, Jonathan Blotter May 2006

Active Minimization Of Acoustic Energy Density To Attenuate Radiated Noise From Enclosures, Andrew Boone, Jonathan Blotter

Utah Space Grant Consortium

The noise produced by mechanical equipment can be an annoyance as well as a health and safety concern. One application where noise reduction has become important is in diesel power generators. Two methods for the reduction of noise exist: passive and active noise control. In this project active noise control (ANC) is applied to the problem of noise radiating from diesel generator enclosures. The purpose of this research is to show that the active minimization of energy density within an enclosure can lead to a global reduction of the externally radiated noise. Two underlying questions will be answered in this …

Creating Mechanistic Ion Channel Models Using Genetic Algorithms, Jonathan Neal Hurst May 2006

Creating Mechanistic Ion Channel Models Using Genetic Algorithms, Jonathan Neal Hurst

Biology

Modeling ion channel function is often problematic, especially for channels that have not been physically characterized, because transitions between many conformational states cannot be directly observed. Myriad voltage clamp protocols have been developed to study these transitions, but model parameterization remains difficult because either all transitions must be culled from one protocol, or the data from multiple protocols must be non-redundantly combined. One solution to this problem is to use a genetic algorithm to create models that fit all desired voltage clamp data. This method has the distinct advantage of producing accurate ion channel models without manipulating the voltage clamp …

Mycobacterium-Plant Interactions In Bioremediation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Compounds, Robert D. Child May 2006

Mycobacterium-Plant Interactions In Bioremediation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Compounds, Robert D. Child

Biology

Five mycobacterium isolates that degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons colonize the surface of barley roots from a seed inoculum. Colonization was maintained in the presence of an aggressive root-colonizing pseudomonad. All five of the mycobacterium strains utilized components in root washes for growth but they differed in their potential for biofilm formation. Components in the barley root washes did not impede the mineralization of pyrene. An inexpensive, portable, flexible microcosm chamber system was constructed and implemented in pyrene mineralization experiments. The system facilitated control of sterile conditions, air flow-through, and collection of volatilized radiolabeled compounds. Mineralization rates of pyrene were higher …

Catalase Activity Mediates The Inhibitory Actions Of 24,25 Dihydroxyvitamin D3, Sven L. Peery May 2006

Catalase Activity Mediates The Inhibitory Actions Of 24,25 Dihydroxyvitamin D3, Sven L. Peery

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The steroid hormone 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] rapidly stimulates the uptake of phosphate in isolated chick intestinal cells, while the steroid 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [24,25(OH)2D3] inhibits the rapid stimulation by 1,25(OH)2D3. Earlier work in this laboratory has indicated that a cellular binding protein for the 24,25(OH)2D3 is the enzyme catalase. Since binding resulted in decreased catalase activity and increased H2O2 production, studies were undertaken to determine if pro-oxidant conditions mimicked the inhibitory actions of 24,25(OH)2D3, and anti-oxidant conditions …

Towards A More Comprehensive View Of The Use Of Power Between Couple Members In Adolescent Romantic Relationships, Charles George Bentley May 2006

Towards A More Comprehensive View Of The Use Of Power Between Couple Members In Adolescent Romantic Relationships, Charles George Bentley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated the construct of power in adolescent romantic couples using multiple measures. The project examined gender differences in power, created models of powerlessness for each gender, and examined relations between power and aggression and relationship quality. Participants were 90 heterosexual couples, aged 14-18 years old, living in rural areas in Utah and Arizona. Couple members completed surveys assessing attitudes and behaviors in their relationships and a video-recall procedure in which partners rated their own and their partner's behaviors during problem solving discussion.

Few gender differences emerged in reports of perpetration of aggression, but boyfriends reported higher levels of …

Types Of And Negotiation Of Connection Rituals In Newlywed Couples, Rachel N. Davis May 2006

Types Of And Negotiation Of Connection Rituals In Newlywed Couples, Rachel N. Davis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the types of connection rituals and negotiation patterns that newlywed couples use in their marriage. Past research has shown that rituals can have a positive effect on marital satisfaction. Five research questions guided the study: (1) Who initiates rituals and the frequency in which the rituals are performed? What process does the couple go through to negotiate them? (2) What percentage of rituals do newlywed couples take from their family of origin? (3) Are women the "kin keepers" in their family/relationship? (4) Are there certain factors newlyweds take into consideration when negotiating? …

Electroporation Of Pediococcus Pentosaceus And The Curing Rate Of Plasmids, Heidi E. Shields May 2006

Electroporation Of Pediococcus Pentosaceus And The Curing Rate Of Plasmids, Heidi E. Shields

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Genetic engineering is a relatively new process and is a major focus of research in various fields, such as medicine, plant genetics, and food science. The potential applications of genetic engineering include designer drug production, mass protein production, and enhanced food processing. Finding an appropriate host organism to be used in genetic engineering is an important preliminary step. Pediococcus pentosaceus has been suggested as a bacterial species with such potential. Since plasmids are often the vector of choice in genetic recombination, this research tests the ability of P. pentosaceus to take up and incorporate plasmids into its genome. Two plasmids …

Milk Intake In Early And Late Adulthood And Risk Of Osteoporotic Hip Fractures In Utah, Melanie Jean Slavens

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relationship between milk intake and risk of osteoporotic fractures is uncertain. Associations between milk intake and milk avoidance in relation to osteoporotic hip fracture were examined in the Utah Study of Nutrition and Bone Health (USNBH), a statewide case-control study. Cases were ascertained at Utah hospitals treating 98 percent of hip fractures during 1997-2001 and included 1188 men and women aged 50-89 years. Age- and gender-matched controls were randomly selected from Utah driver's license and Medicare databases (N= 1324). In-person interviews were conducted and participants reported frequency of milk intake per week at age 18 and during pregnancy among …

Dysphagia And Nutrition In The Elderly, Amanda Panting May 2006

Dysphagia And Nutrition In The Elderly, Amanda Panting

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Dysphagia and nutrition in the elderly go hand in hand. As age increases, bodily functions decrease. The loss of function causes an increased susceptibility to swallowing disorders and possible malnutrition. Dysphagia in the elderly increases mortality and morbidity rates (3). This paper discusses causes, symptoms and consequences of dysphagia. Swallow studies and various feeding techniques are examined. Alzheimer's disease, dementia and stroke are diseases that are commonly seen among patients with dysphagia (3, 10). Alternative nutrition via enteral feeding has been shown to increase survival rate (14, 15, 16). The ethics of prolonging death or prolonging life through nutrition support …
