Hearing Nothing, Brittany Nelson
Hearing Nothing, Brittany Nelson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Utah State prides itself in its services for students, but recently those services have made negative headlines. Deaf students have filed a lawsuit against the university complaining about the lack of sign language interpreters. But some complain that they are still hearing or seeing no response.
For my Thesis Project, I produced a documentary highlighting the problem both here on our campus, and on a statewide and even nationwide level. I researched the issues, conducted interviews, wrote the script, taped all video and edited the video. The 20 minute documentary was shown publicly on campus in an effort to make …

It has been proposed that the Borana Plateau has markedly changed in terms of land cover and land use in recent decades, but no hard data have been available to critically assess this claim. In addition, systematic analysis of soil properties has been limited. Research was designed to measure changes in land cover/land use over 30 years in the 400-km2 Yabelo District of southern Ethiopia using three satellite images taken at an average interval of 15 years. Samples were also collected to assess variation in the physical and chemical properties of dominant soils. Results indicated that Yabelo District has indeed …

Collective Action By Women’S Groups To Combat Drought And Poverty In Northern Kenya, D. Layne Coppock, Solomon Desta, Getachew Gebru, Adan Wako, Ibrahim Aden, Chachu Tadecha, Seyoum Tezera
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
Collective action can be an effective means of local development and risk reduction among rural people, but few examples have been documented in pastoral areas. We conducted extensive interviews for 16 women’s groups residing in northern Kenya. Our objectives were to understand how groups were formed, governed, and sustained and what activities they have pursued. The groups we interviewed were 10 years old, on average. Charter memberships averaged about 24 women, 20 of whom were illiterate. Half of the groups formed after facilitation by a development partner and half formed spontaneously. Groups are governed under detailed constitutional frameworks with elected …

Tropic And East Fork Irrigation Company, Tropic Ditch Replacement Project, Environmental Assessment, Bureau Of Reclamation, Provo Area Office
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The purpose of this project is to reduce the amount of salt entering the Paria River and ultimately the Colorado River. One way to reduce the amount of salt reaching the Colorado River is to eliminate seepage from the historic Tropic Ditch. The Bureau of Reclamation, Provo Area Office has proposed funding for the project under the Colorado River Salinity Control Program. In addition to reducing the amount of salt loading, the project would also conserve water lost to evaporation and seepage.
The purpose of this Environmental Assessment (EA) is to analyze the potential environmental consequences of the proposed construction …
Evolution Of The Electron Yield Curves Of Insulators As A Function Of Impinging Electron Fluence And Energy, John R. Dennison, Alec Sim, Clint Thomson
Evolution Of The Electron Yield Curves Of Insulators As A Function Of Impinging Electron Fluence And Energy, John R. Dennison, Alec Sim, Clint Thomson
All Physics Faculty Publications
Electron emission and concomitant charge accumulation near the surface of insulators is central to understanding spacecraft charging. A study of changes in electron emission yields as a result of internal charge buildup due to electron dose is presented. Evolution of total, backscattered, and secondary yield results over a broad range of incident energies are presented for two representative insulators, Kapton and Al2O3. Reliable yield curves for uncharged insulators are measured, and quantifiable changes in yields are observed due to <100-fC/mm2 fluences. Excellent agreement with a phenomenological argument based on insulator charging predicted by the yield curve …100-fc/mm

Effect Of Staged Practices And Motivational Climate On Goal Orientation And Sportsmanship In Community Youth Sport Experiences, Mary Sara Wells, Gary D. Ellis, Skye G. Arthur-Banning, Mark F. Roark
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
Significant acts of poor sportsmanship and aggression are becoming increasingly prevalent in youth sports. Youth who have negative experiences as a result of witnessing or being directly involved in such poor sportsmanship experiences are less likely to participate in future sport activities, thereby contributing to sedentary lifestyles and a number of health related problems. Goal orientation theory provides a basis for understanding why many of these unsporting acts may occur. “Task-oriented” participants focus on their intra-individual growth and development in sports and tend to be much less involved in aggression and poor sportsmanship. In contrast, “Egooriented” participants judge success in …

Implications Of Internet Protocol On Leo Micro-Satellite Communication Links, Keith Nicewarner
Implications Of Internet Protocol On Leo Micro-Satellite Communication Links, Keith Nicewarner
Small Satellite Conference
Internet Protocol (IP) enables a session-based communication paradigm that is transaction-oriented rather than data stream-centric. This is a paradigm that is prevalent in ground systems (and arguably a significant factor in the success of the Internet), but is uncommon in space systems – even ones that have used IP. IP allows multiple, simultaneous, independent sessions over the same channel. This allows software that uses the space link to be written in a more modular and easily testable manner. It also allows commercial IP-based technology to be used independently of the application-specific software. For instance, a telnet session to the spacecraft …

The Changing Paradigms Of Satellite Reconnaissance, Creating Opportunities In The Small Satellite Industry, Mark Wilkinson
Small Satellite Conference
The mention of satellite reconnaissance brings to mind images of large spacecraft, centralized command centers, and vast rooms of image analysts reading license plates and following political leaders in foreign countries. This vision of the Cold War shaped a generation of design practices. With miniaturization, satellites are achieving greater capabilities in smaller packages. The end of the Cold War and an era of war against terrorism changed reconnaissance targets and objectives. These two factors created opportunities in space research and development for small companies and academic institutions. This paper examines 11 paradigms in satellite reconnaissance and how these paradigms are …

Multi Payload Ejector (Mpe), Bridging The Gap In Recurring Space Access, Jeffrey Reddish
Small Satellite Conference
The continuous increase in the number of small satellites under development today is in direct contrast to the number of launch opportunities available for that payload class. The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) recognized this problem and in 2004 started an effort to reform the system supporting small satellites. The Multi Payload Ejector (MPE) is a fundamental part of this new pathway. The MPE is an orbital carrier that uses common interfaces. It is capable of accommodating a flexible set of small, stand-alone spacecraft, ranging from cubesats to ESPA-class satellites with masses ranging from 2 to …

Micro-Inspector Spacecraft An Overview, Hannah Goldberg, Juergen Mueller, Leon Alkalai
Small Satellite Conference
JPL has completed design of a small (< 5 kg) spacecraft capable of visual inspection of a host vehicle with support from NASA’s Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD). The Micro-Inspector is designed to have a minimal impact on the host with respect to mass, size, cost, interface, and integration. On orbit, the host provides the separation signal to the Micro-Inspector, ejecting it to autonomously maneuver about the host taking images and communicating them back to the host in real-time. The Micro-Inspector is capable of receiving commands for additional utility. After operations are complete, the Micro-Inspector will go through an end of life disposal, ensuring it is at a safe distance and minimal risk to the host. The Micro-Inspector spacecraft features an FPGA based avionics design with embedded processors, miniaturized celestial sensors and a MEMS-based IMU for navigation, structured light system for hazard avoidance, triple-junction solar cells for power generation and lithiumion batteries for power storage, and a low pressure butane propulsion system, all in a compact and integrated structure, allowing the Micro-Inspector to operate in close proximity to another space object. Extra mass and volume can be used for additional sensors other than visual inspection to provide a more complete analysis of the local space environment. This paper describes the multi-mission utility of the Micro-Inspector and presents an overview of the spacecraft system and subsystem designs, description of a typical inspection mission scenario, and initial hardware demonstrations of key subsystems, partially integrated with each other in a Micro-Inspector testbed at JPL.

Cost-effective Earth observation missions – how can they be achieved, what are the cost drivers, what are the application areas, and what are the possible obstacles and how are they surmounted? A recently published study1,2 provides a single reference of all aspects connected with cost-effective missions. This paper concentrates on some of the outcomes of that study. User communities which start to conduct or participate in Earth observation missions using small, economical satellites, and associated launches, ground stations, data distributions structures, and space system management approaches are likely to find this information useful.
