Several years ago, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) began a research program to understand the complexity of aerospace systems and how, through technology, it would be possible create them much faster. To underscore the ambitions of this work, we referred to this research as the pursuit of the “six-day” spacecraft. The six-day interval is marked starting with identification of a mission need and ending with a fieldable spacecraft ready to integrate onto a launch vehicle. This body of work culminated in the creation of a plug-and-play satellite bus (PnPSat) as a “clean-sheet” approach to spacecraft architecture. With PnPSat, we …

Existing military communication systems use large, very expensive, heavily tasked “national asset” communications satellites located in geostationary orbits, often supplemented by leased capabilities on commercial satellites. As data and voice communication needs have increased with the adoption of network-centric warfare operations, these assets may becoming increasingly oversubscribed and unavailable when needed by tactical warfighters. The Air Force has established an office of Operational Responsive Space (ORS) to address these and other challenges. The Geo Small Sat (GSS) concept is less complex than a LEO constellation system, employing only a single small UHF/L Band communications satellite launched by a small responsive …

The launch of the Tactical Satellite-2 (TacSat-2) carrying the Navy’s Target Indicator Experiment (TIE) payload has provided the first opportunity to test some of the constructs used in its development, and that of its predecessor, TacSat-1 Flying the TIE payload for the past eleven months has demonstrated, and validated, the approaches taken, proving that flexibility, extensibility, and software portability can decrease development time, increase the leveraging of existing tools, and help control software development costs. However, our experience has shown that this flexibility can create challenges in managing day-to-day payload operations.

During the design of the NASA Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) mission of a constellation of five identical micro-satellites studying the electromagnetic activity in near Earth space responsible for the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights, there were significant challenges to meet mission objectives for a low mass, low power, thermally safe, and attitude control as it pertains to multiple deployables for the constellation of five identical spacecraft. The design risks were mitigated and verified by test and analysis and on February 17, 2007 the THEMIS mission was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. This paper …
The Challenges Of Developing An Operational Nanosatellite, David Homan, Quinn Young
The Challenges Of Developing An Operational Nanosatellite, David Homan, Quinn Young
Small Satellite Conference
Recent nanosatellite programs and studies of nanosatellites for operational missions have highlighted challenges that are unique to this spacecraft category. While each small satellite class has peculiar design challenges, nanosatellite development challenges are compounded by the unique niche that nanosatellites occupy and the current perception of hardware maturity levels available to support nanosatellite spacecraft. Recent experimental successes with microsatellite systems are allowing such spacecraft to rapidly move toward operational systems. This has produced a false perception that the same small, high TRL operational components and subsystems used in microsatellites will transition easily into the smaller nanosatellite designs. At the same …

A consortium of organizations has proposed an experiment to map Earth’s high-latitude electric field. The High-latitude Dynamic E-Field (HiDEF) Explorer will observe poorly understood magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere phenomena. Utah State University Space Dynamics Laboratory is responsible for systems engineering and mission planning for achieving science objectives. A constellation of 90 pico-satellites is deployed at high latitudes over a range of inclinations and altitudes increments that evolve from a densely-packed cluster to a fully global high-latitude coverage over a period of approximately 18 months. Planned constellation “fold-out” allows measurements of high latitude electric fields over wide spatial and temporal scales. …

Background
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a potent hepatocarcinogen and peroxisome proliferator (PP) in rodents. Humans are not susceptible to peroxisome proliferation and are considered refractory to carcinogenesis by PPs. Previous studies with rainbow trout indicate they are also insensitive to peroxisome proliferation by the PP dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), but are still susceptible to enhanced hepatocarcinogenesis after chronic exposure.
Objectives
In this study, we used trout as a unique in vivo tumor model to study the potential for PFOA carcinogenesis in the absence of peroxisome proliferation compared with the structurally diverse PPs clofibrate (CLOF) and DHEA. Mechanisms of carcinogenesis were identified from …

The need to eliminate trans-fatty acids from foods’ formulation resulted in the exploration of new lipid sources and alternative processing conditions that will improve the physicochemical characteristics and nutritional qualities of lipid-based foods. In general, the physicochemical characteristics of lipid networks depend on the microstructure and crystallization behavior of the system. The objective of this work was to use high intensity ultrasound (HIU) as an additional processing condition to alter the crystallization behavior of a lipid model system (anhydrous milk fat). Results show that HIU application not only decreases the induction time of crystallization (faster crystallization) at a constant crystallization …

Where Is 'Community' In Community Based Forestry?, Courtney G. Flint, A. E. Luloff, James C. Finley
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Community-based forestry and community-based natural resource management have become increasingly common terms in both the scientific and popular press. However, as with so many other concepts currently in vogue, rarely do studies invoking them incorporate either a grounded theoretical understanding or practical inclusion of the central term: community. Community emerges through communication and interaction among people who care about each other and the place they live. In its purest form, community is marked by its multiple and often conflicting perspectives. This article draws upon recent research experience with the Ford Foundation's community-based forestry initiative to illustrate the importance of solidly …

The contribution of emissions from agricultural facilities is rapidly becoming a major concern for local and regional air quality. Characterization of particle properties such as physical size distribution and chemical composition can be valuable in understanding the processes contributing to emissions and ultimate fate of particulate matter from agricultural facilities. A measurement campaign was conducted at an Iowa, deep-pit, three-barn swine finishing facility to characterize near-source ambient particulate matter. Size-specific mass concentrations were determined using minivol samplers, with additional size distribution information obtain using optical particle counters. Particulate composition was determined via ion chromatographic analysis of the collected filters. A …

Ecology, Problem Framing And Local Land Use Controls: A Case Study Of Socio-Ecological Governance In Franklin County, Idaho, Alissa Salmore
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Due to the continuity of energy and material flows, the persistence of an ecological network necessarily includes a linking of ecological units from local and immediate to regional and broad-ranging scales. Humans are an integral part of ecosystems acting as resource consumers and agents of change, and all systems can be considered combined 'socio-ecological' systems. Where environmental and social systems lack coordination, mismatches between the temporal, spatial or functional scales at which these systems operate lead to resource use inefficiencies and the loss of ecosystem components and functioning. This case study of Franklin County, Idaho documents a recent land use …
