Physicochemical characteristics of lipid-based foods depend, among other factors, on the microstructure and the characteristics of the lipid network formed during crystallization. The objective of this study, was to evaluate the effect of the addition of sunflower oil waxes on the crystallization and melting behavior of anhydrous milk fat (AMF), a lipid with a low content of palmitic and trans-fatty acids. The crystallization and melting behavior of AMF alone and with the addition of 0.25 and 0.5% of waxes was studied using a differential scanning calorimeter. The morphology of the crystallized samples was evaluated with a polarized light microscope. The …

The overwhelming success of the commercial game market has brought increased attention to emerging work in educational game design. Much of the existing work in educational games a strong similarity to the field of Problem-Based Learning (PBL), which has a rich history of conceptual literature as well as empirical investigations. Despite apparent similarities between the two fields, there has been no formal effort to explore the connections between them. This conceptual paper examines the basic tenants of PBL with an eye toward making prescriptive recommendations for the design and use of problem-based educational games. Examples within existing educational games are …

The Formation Autonomy Spacecraft with Thrust, Relnav, Attitude, and Crosslink (FASTRAC) project from the University of Texas at Austin has developed two nanosatellites as the winner of the University Nanosat-3 Competition. Both satellites have been manifested for a launch provided by the Space Test Program (STP) in December of 2009. The FASTRAC satellites will demonstrate the following enabling technologies for nanosatellites: (1) on-orbit real-time GPS relative navigation via real-time crosslink data exchange; (2) on-orbit real-time attitude determination using a single frequency, C/A-code, reprogrammable GPS receiver; (3) a micro-discharge plasma thruster; and (4) a distributed ground station network. In this paper, …

In 2006 Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) and Orbital Sciences Corporation announced a new initiative to have students from TJHSST design and build the first ever high-school satellite. Leveraging the large body of prior work done in the CubeSat community, and under the mentorship of Orbital Sciences engineers, TJHSST students are in the design phase of their new CubeSat dubbed TJ3Sat. The TJ3Sat payload consists of a digital voice synthesizer that will be accessible to the general amateur radio community. The launch of TJ3Sat is currently scheduled for mid 2009. Unlike most other student satellite programs, …

Small Satellite Conference
The performance of mission-critical components and systems within spacecraft and satellites requires the ability to control the local thermal environment. Under conditions of relatively constant component and system loading, this would involve radiative dissipation of both internally and externally generated heat loads and altering thermal balances to provide heating where necessary. As the local thermal load changes with component use, the need arises to alter the heat transfer rates and dissipation within the spacecraft. It is also desirable to be able to evaluate, reconfigure or repair space-based thermal control systems using only ground station commands. These needs can be met …

Small Satellite Conference
Maintaining the health of a spacecraft is a critical element of satellite operations, typically driving operations costs and often requiring standing armies of highly trained operations staff. An important aspect of this work is anomaly management (AM), which is the detection, diagnosis and resolution of anomalous conditions. Research in this area ranges from the development of robust reasoning techniques to the design of highly-performance flight processors able to implement these techniques on-orbit. Our recent work in this area focuses on the composition of advanced model-based reasoning (MBR) algorithms for AM that can be efficiently executed on a new generation of …

Every satellite must regulate incoming power from solar cells, charge batteries and regulate satellite power to maintain satellite health. The power system should be as light, small, and efficient as possible to allow a maximum of resources to satellite systems while minimizing complexity, and meeting CubeSat mechanical and thermal requirements. This paper describes a modular power system, which integrates peak power tracking, battery charging, and power regulation. In addition, it describes the entire power design of a CubeSat power system. This system includes the modular power system described above together with solar cells, and lithium polymer batteries. Due to a …

Today different groups started to manufacture cubesats because of the low cost of manufacturing and launching the satellites. With the growth of cubesat manufacturing, the scientist has tried to produce the small launchers to respond the needs of new researchers and young scientists. In 1980 the manufactured the commercial small launcher and starting launch in 1990. Also Russia with improvement of their ballistic missile and performing changes and improvement tried to manufacture small launchers with a minimum cost to launch the cubesat in the planed orbits. The cubesat will be launched into space together with other cubesats inside a so …

A Novel Cold Gas Propulsion System For Nanosatellites And Picosatellites, David Hinkley
Small Satellite Conference
A Microelectromechanical System-based (MEMS) PICOSAT Inspector (MEPSI) picosatellite on STS-116, in December 2006, used a five thruster cold gas propulsion system to translate and rotate. The inspector picosatellite measured 4 x 4 x 5 inches in dimension and weighted 1.4 kg. Our propulsion system was produced by a unique (to spacecraft) method of manufacturing that is low cost, tightly integrated, and leak tight. This paper will describe the design, fabrication, testing and limits of this type of unit, and extrapolate to other related uses found at The Aerospace Corporation. This work was funded by The Aerospace Corporation’s Independent Research and …

Several years ago, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) began a research program to understand the complexity of aerospace systems and how, through technology, it would be possible create them much faster. To underscore the ambitions of this work, we referred to this research as the pursuit of the “six-day” spacecraft. The six-day interval is marked starting with identification of a mission need and ending with a fieldable spacecraft ready to integrate onto a launch vehicle. This body of work culminated in the creation of a plug-and-play satellite bus (PnPSat) as a “clean-sheet” approach to spacecraft architecture. With PnPSat, we …
