Reflection As A Learning Tool In A Nature Based Study Abroad Course, Annette C. Moore, Roger L. Moore, Patti Clayton Mar 2010

Reflection As A Learning Tool In A Nature Based Study Abroad Course, Annette C. Moore, Roger L. Moore, Patti Clayton

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

Study abroad programs taking students from the U.S. to other nations have grown in recent years, both in terms of the number of programs and participants. As international education becomes more extensive and popular, approaches to teaching and learning have evolved as well, including various approaches to reflection as a learning tool. International education typically exposes students to places and cultures different from their own. In the context of natural …

Wildlife Management Education Needs To Go Urban, Clark E. Adams, Kieran J. Lindsey

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

One of the common problems associated with introducing urban wildlife management (UWM) as part of the curriculum in the wildlife sciences has been the simplistic notions our colleagues, students, and others have regarding its conceptual framework. For example, the “raccoon in a garbage can” always seems to become the summative explanation of urban wildlife management. Other reductionist definitions include animal damage control, or that UWM is a particular suite of techniques peculiar only to urban areas. The latter problem is of our own making given the inclusion of UWM in the Wildlife Management Techniques Manual published by The Wildlife Society. …

Readers’ Theater is an enjoyable and worthwhile activity in its own right. Trace mineral imbalances have been suggested as having a causative or contributory role in chronic wasting disease (CWD), a prion disease of several North American cervid species. To begin exploring relationships between tissue mineral concentrations and CWD in natural systems, we measured liver tissue concentrations of copper, manganese, and molybdenum in samples from 447 apparently healthy, adult (≥2 yr old) mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) culled or vehicle killed from free-ranging populations in north-central Colorado, United States, where CWD occurs naturally; we also measured copper concentrations in brain-stem (medulla oblongata at the obex) tissue from 181 of these deer. Analyses revealed …
