Trade As A Carrier Of Knowdedge In Economic Growth, Wooill Sim, Basudeb Biswas
Trade As A Carrier Of Knowdedge In Economic Growth, Wooill Sim, Basudeb Biswas
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This paper presents empirical evidence of the effects of trade on economic growth. The main contribution of this study is that the "cumulated past volume of exports and imports" is taken as the carrier of knowledge or the source of externality, while the previous studies assume that only the export sector generates positive externalities. We also investigate the contribution of exports as a source of foreign exchange. The empirical test on 119 countries indicates that trade, being the carrier of knowledge, plays an important role in contributing to economic growth. However, the empirical test does not show any correlation between …

Out Of The Black Patch, Noel A. Carmack, Karen Lynn Davidson
All USU Press Publications
Effie Marquess Carmack (1885-1974) grew up in the tobacco-growing region of southern Kentucky known as the Black Patch. As an adult she moved to Utah, back to Kentucky, to Arizona, and finally to California. Economic necessity primarily motivated Effie and her husband's moves, but her conversion to the Mormon Church in youth also was a factor. Throughout her life, she was committed to preserving the rural, southern folkways she had experienced as a child. She and other members of her family were folk musicians, at times professionally, and she also became a folk poet and artist, teaching herself to paint. …

Folded And Faulted Salt Lake Formation Above The Miocene To Pliocene New Canyon And Clifton Detachment Faults, Malad And Bannock Ranges, Idaho: Field Trip Guide To The Deep Creek Half Graben And Environs, Susanne U. Janecke, J. C. Evans
Geosciences Faculty Publications
Previous studies identified a major detachment terrane in southeast Idaho in the Oxford Ridge area of the Bannock Range. This study shows that these top-to-the-WSW detachment faults are late Cenozoic in age, not Mesozoic to early Tertiary as previously inferred. Provenance and facies patterns in the Miocene-Pliocene Salt Lake Formation in the Deep Creek supradetachment basin show that deposition was syntectonic to slip on the detachment faults. The highly extended Bannock detachment terrane likely persists north to the Snake River Plain and south into Utah. The breakaway for this system lies in the Portneuf Range to the east. At least …

Brosius raises a series of questions that emanate from recent encounters between critical anthropology and environmental discourses and movements. Drawing upon insights from feminist theory, we propose to expand and enrich these questions as they relate to intersections of identity and environmental movements, policy, and positionality. Brosius’s analysis of research on environmental social movements, discourse, and images repeatedly touches on the complex processes of identity and representation. Perhaps most striking is his implicit dichotomization of essential and strategic identities. Our comments first focus on the issue of environmental essentialisms, their deployment by various actors, and their potential unmasking by researchers. …
The Internet: Emergent Technologies In Two West African Countries, Jim Rogers
The Internet: Emergent Technologies In Two West African Countries, Jim Rogers
English Faculty Publications
Being connected for most Africans means something completely different from most of us in more (technologically) "developed" countries. Compared to those who have virtually unlimited and relatively cheap access to e-mail and the World Wide Web (WWW), most Africans have limited access to e-mail only. Outside of South Africa, which hosts 70 full Internet Service Providers (ISPs); Egypt, which hosts 25; and Morocco, which hosts 15, most African countries have well under 10 ISPs, the average being loser to 1 or 2 (Jensen, 1998). This example demonstrates the diversity of the African continent; one cannot simply typify the African example. …
Multispectral Change Detection And Interpretation Using Selective Principal Components And The Tasseled Cap Transformation, Bill Pfaff
Utah Space Grant Consortium
Temporal change is typically observed in all six reflective LANDSAT bands. The change is nominally six dimensional, yet these bands have significant correlation. The actual dimensionality of the change is typically three. Detection methods that do not produce at least three dimensions of change cannot make the most effective use of data. The objective is to obtain a sequence of detection and interpretation techniques that detects change in all six bands, then presents essentially all of the detected change in three physically meaningful dimensions. Such a sequence is described herein. The detection is performed by Selective Principal Components Analysis, and …
Factors Concerning The Conservation Of A Rare Shale Endemic Plant: The Reproductive Ecology And Edaphic Characteristics Of Penstemon Debilis (Scrophulariaceae), Amy L. Mcmullen
Biology
The management of a rare, edaphic endemic plant species requires an understanding of the ecological setting and processes that contribute to its restriction. Included in the ecological processes is a set of biotic characters associated with the reproductive ecology, including its breeding system, pollination vectors, and germination requirements. The geologic and soil setting of the plant must also be characterized in order to understand the plant's restriction to the substrate. These issues were addressed by this study of the rare endemic Penstemon debilis O'Kane and Anderson (Scrophulariaceae). Penstemon debilis consists of six populations that occur on talus slopes of the …

Why Long-Term Marriages Last: A Review, Paula Gabell
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Marriage is a social institution experienced by most adults at least once in their life-time. Like any other type of institution marriage has its own set of norms and roles that are culturally specific to the area where it is being practiced. Marriage has existed in some form in almost every culture throughout time. There are four major types of marriages practiced in the world today. They are polygynous (one husband and many wives), polyandrous (one wife and several husbands), multilateral (several people of both sexes existing as a part of one marriage) and monogamous (two partners usually one male …

The thesis contains interesting and relevant information concerning the impact of the mining and milling industry on communities located within a geographically, socially, politically, and economically defined area in southwestern Colorado. This area supplied a tremendous amount of radium, vanadium, and uranium in successive eras. The author focuses primarily on Uravan, and examines the town's role in the uranium procurement program during World War II. The study of Uravan also provides information on the social structure of a company-owned community. Also examined are the ways in which government policies affected these small communities, and the impacts of the mining and …

Pre-Referral Portfolio Assessment For Limited English Proficient Students, Elizabeth Grayce Stevens
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
What can be done to ensure that the needs are met of children who are limited in proficiency of the English language? Such is the familiar query of educators and professionals alike. In fact, one elementary school principal stated that this question often presents itself as the first item of business when administrators meet together (Marian Waterman, personal communication, October, 1997). How do we know where to place a child? How do we evaluate progress? When progress is limited, how do we know if the child requires special education services? The answers lie in appropriate assessment.

Through experiences on a variety of projects with the Utah Geographic Alliance, it has become increasingly apparent that there needs to be a greater emphasis placed on project-oriented geography education multimedia materials for both teacher and student use. Through direct participation and extensive involvement with UGA projects and activities the importance, value and potential of computer based technology for geography education has become very obvious. Over the past three years USU students and Alliance teachers have been intensely involved with Dr. Cliff B. Craig in spearheading UGA and Department of Geography & Earth Resources efforts in conducting both state and …
Development And Validation Of Forest Habitat Models In The Uinta Mountains, Utah, Tracey S. Frescino
Development And Validation Of Forest Habitat Models In The Uinta Mountains, Utah, Tracey S. Frescino
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A significant question currently facing environmental managers is how to accurately and efficiently quantify forest diversity and resources. Numerous studies have demonstrated the use of modern spatial analytical tools, such as geographical information systems (GIS), remote sensing devices, and statistical models for predicting the distribution of dominant vegetation cover types. This study examines the ability of generalized additive models (GAMs) to delineate structural diversity in forested ecosystems (specifically the Uinta Mountain Range in Utah) using GIS tools and satellite spectral data, and analyzes the effect of including different forms of satellite data in model construction (i.e., Landsat thematic mapper (TM), …
A Geographic Information System Assessment Method For Fire Management: Identifying Fire Danger Areas, Richard D. Stratton
A Geographic Information System Assessment Method For Fire Management: Identifying Fire Danger Areas, Richard D. Stratton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, a geographic information system (GIS) was used to create a wildland fire assessment methodology. GIS layers (or themes) include topography, infrastructure, vegetation, climate, "sensitive" natural values, and fire history. Two phases of assessment are presented: a preliminary analysis designed for planning use at the landscape level, and a detailed analysis for site-specific use.
Results of the phase 1 assessment are density grids delineating areas of high fire occurrence and suggesting to managers where a phase 2 assessment is needed. By using the environmental, …

Explaining The Uneven Penetration Ofindustrialization In The U.S. Dairy Sector, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, F. H. Buttel
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
One of the most dramatic trends in American farm-structural change over the past several decades has been the industrialization of livestock production. Many now expect that dairying in the United States will be the next major livestock sector to succumb to the industrialization trend. This paper utilizes a multidimensional definition of industrialization to critically examine evidence for and against the dairy industrialization hypothesis. The authors find that while there is a persistent trend toward larger units of production, and a geographical shift towards states with more industriallike farm operations, the penetration of industrial relations of production has occurred more slowly …

The Learning Spiral: Taking The Lead From How Young Children Learn, Martha Taylor Dever
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
The questions at right, asked by 2nd-graders, launch a scientific inquiry about owls. As the 7-year-olds investigate stuffed owl specimens, they express their need to know. Some children continue to stroke the owls' feathers, touch a sharp claw, and ask questions about the mouth, while others immediately turn to printed materials to clarify their questions. This new experience with owls ignites the children's sense of wonder, and the intrinsically motivated scientific inquiry begins.
Between Talk And Teaching: Reconsidering The Writing Conference, Laurel Johnson Black
Between Talk And Teaching: Reconsidering The Writing Conference, Laurel Johnson Black
All USU Press Publications
The teacher-student conference is standard in the repertoire of teachers at all levels. Because it's a one-to-one encounter, teachers work hard to make it comfortable; but because it's a pedagogical moment, they hope that learning occurs in the encounter, too. The literature in this area often suggests that a conference is a conversation, but this doesn't account for a teacher's need to use it pedagogically. Laurel Johnson Black's new book explores the conflicting meanings and relations embedded in conferencing and offers a new theoretical understanding of the conference along with practical approaches to conferencing more effectively with students.

The climate of the Challis Resource Area is influenced primarily by maritime air carried eastward on prevailing westerly winds. General climatic characteristics are abundant sunshine, low humidity, and high evaporation. The major precipitation source, particularly for winter storms, is the Northern Pacific Ocean. In the summer, however, most of the thunderstorm activity is caused by moisture-laden air originating from the south, off the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Natural Resource Management - The Creation Of A New Interdisciplinary Major At The University Of Delaware, Steven E. Hastings, Karen Roth Aniunas
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
The College of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Delaware has an excellent faculty and physical facility well positioned to educate students for managing the world's natural resources (air, land, water, pants, animals, etc.) into the next century. The college offers a variety of traditional, discipline specific undergraduate majors in five academic departments. A faculty committee worked for more than two years to formulate a new major with an interdisciplinary approach. The result is a new major, Natural Resource Management, which began admitting freshman students in the Fall of 1997. This paper will discuss the creation of the Natural Resource …

Natural Resource Education: Getting Forest Products Workers Into The Flow, Mark D. Reed, Jeffry C. Hino, Elizabeth A. Littlefield, Edward C. Jensen
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
The forest products industry employs over 1.4 million people in the U.S.; it ranks among the top ten manufacturing employers in 46 states. Surprisingly, a recent survey of U.S. forest products workers revealed substantial ignorance and misperceptions about forests and forestry issues. Despite this, few educational programs are targeted at this audience. The Oregon Forest Resources Institute has teamed up with Oregon State University's Forestry Media Center to fill this gap with Project FLOW (Forestry Learning Opportunities for Workers). Phase one of this project, completed in summer 1997, analyzed current status of forestry educational opportunities for forest workers in Oregon: …

Integrated Education In Natural Resource Management: Connecting The University To Needs Around It Through Partnership, Francine B. Patterson, David B. Longbrake
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
Education has long been faced with the notion that what they do bears no relation to the world outside academe. The public and private sector have often confronted the new graduate who needs to get a footing in the "real world" and learn how to apply what he has studied. The best solution for higher education is to produce students who both know their subject matter and can apply it while a student.

Graphical Surface-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (Svat) Model As A Pedagogical And Research Tool, Robert R. Gillies, Toby N. Carlson, David A.J. Ripley
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
This paper considers, by example, the use of a Surface-Atmosphere-Vegetation-Transfer (SVAT), Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) model designed as a pedagogical tool. The goal of the computer software and the approach is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of communicating often complex and mathematical based disciplines (e.g., micrometeorology, land surface processes) to the non-specialist interested in studying problems involving interactions between vegetation and the atmosphere and, in the nature of interactions rather than a description of the components. Topics are addressed within a Socratic framework using a scenario system based approach: As an example of this, the interactions between a vegetation …
