Determination Of Wax Concentration In Sunflower-Seed Oil, Silvana Martini, M.C. Anon Oct 2000

Determination Of Wax Concentration In Sunflower-Seed Oil, Silvana Martini, M.C. Anon

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Isothermal crystallization of waxes was studied by using an optical setup. The induction time of crystallization was assessed as a function of wax concentration. The relationship was found to be a decreasing exponential curve. The wax content of some of the solutions prepared in the laboratory was determined by calculating the crystallization induction time. The values obtained were compared to those from different methods (cold test, microscopic, and turbidimetric methods). The results obtained with the optical setup method are similar to those obtained with other methods for concentrations greater than 100 ppm. An analysis of variance test was used to …

Biography Of James Jarvis Chandler, Paul S. Davis May 2000

Biography Of James Jarvis Chandler, Paul S. Davis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis is a general biography of a Mormon pioneer who, although not among the most renowned church officials, played a pivotal role in building Zion as teacher, missionary, leader, politician, husband, and father. After his conversion as a boy in England to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he and his family emigrated to America and settled in Willard, Utah. With a keen mind and a zeal for learning, Chandler pursued an education to prepare him for future employment as a school teacher. Although pupils throughout northern Utah and southern Idaho profited from his teaching proficiency and …

The Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Middle Cambrian Wheeler Formation In The Drum Mountains Of West Central Utah, Loren P. Schneider May 2000

The Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Middle Cambrian Wheeler Formation In The Drum Mountains Of West Central Utah, Loren P. Schneider

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The majority of the Middle Cambrian Wheeler Formation in the Drum Mountains was deposited during a single 3rd order sequence. Superimposed onto this sequence are three indistinct 4th order cycles and twenty distinct 5th order cycles. These higher order cycles were likely deposited within short intervals of geologic time (204 to 405 ky).

The lower sequence boundary zone occurs within the Swasey Formation. The Transgressive Surface is the contact between the Swasey and Wheeler Formations. The Maximum Flooding Surface is located near the top of the lower Wheeler Formation, which also approximates the base of the Ptychagnostus …

Is It Time For Cooperative Learning To Enter American Classrooms?, Donna Sewell

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Education's raison d'etre is to prepare students with the skills necessary for a productive and happy life within society. The fact that many educational institutions are experiencing a disconcerting number of students dropping out of school (and sometimes life itself) may be an indicator that this preparation is less than adequate in meeting their needs. In fact, the needs of a high school graduate today are so different and far-reaching than what they were 30-50 years ago, it will be easier to group them according to a change in economics, transformed demographics and changes in social situations and practices. Each …

The Geography Of Exploration: A Study In The Process Of Physical Exploration And Geographical Discovery, Joseph St.Onge May 2000

The Geography Of Exploration: A Study In The Process Of Physical Exploration And Geographical Discovery, Joseph St.Onge

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Exploration has been a common literary topic throughout the history of humans. However, much of this historical tradition has possessed a fairly narrow focus, emphasizing the drama and heroics of an individual explorer or concentrating on a description of a particular exploration. There has been little attempt at understanding the process of exploration and placing this important process in context with the historic and geographic phenomena that both affect and are affected by it. In this thesis, the author has broken the process of exploration down into a theoretical structure that is presented in a holistic model. This model has …

One Boss Or Many? Decision Making And Coordination In The Multi-Plant Firm, Lynn Hunnicutt Jan 2000

One Boss Or Many? Decision Making And Coordination In The Multi-Plant Firm, Lynn Hunnicutt

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Multi-plant organizations have trouble including both local and global information in their decisions. Outlets know local conditions but headquarters is able to coordinate outlets. In allocating decision-making power, firms must balance coordination and flexibility. I model this tradeoff, and show that the decentralized firm may standardize to avoid costs due to miscoordination. That is, increasingly variable local conditions cause decentralized choices to become less variable. Ex ante, decentralization is more profitable; neither form dominates ex post. Signals from outlets to headquarters improve the performance of the centralized firm, but one can always find conditions under which decentralization is preferred.

Effects Of Land Use Change On Channel Morphology In Northeastern Puerto Rico, J. J. Clark, Peter Wilcock Jan 2000

Effects Of Land Use Change On Channel Morphology In Northeastern Puerto Rico, J. J. Clark, Peter Wilcock

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Between 1830 and 1950 much of northeastern Puerto Rico was cleared for agriculture. Runoff increased by 50% and sediment supply to the river channels increased by more than an order of magnitude. Much of the land clearance extended to steep valley slopes, resulting in widespread gullying and landslides and a large load of coarse sediments delivered to the stream channels. A shift from agriculture to industrial and residential land uses over the past 50 yr has maintained the elevated runoff while sediment supply has decreased, allowing the rivers to begin removing coarse sediment stored within their channels. The size, abundance, …

A Requiem For The Ifq In U.S. Fisheries, Keith R. Criddle, Seth Macinko Jan 2000

A Requiem For The Ifq In U.S. Fisheries, Keith R. Criddle, Seth Macinko

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Despite their apparent economic benefits to harvesters, Individual Fishing Quotas (IFQs) have only been adopted in three U.S. fisheries: Mid-Atlantic surf clam and ocean quahog; South Atlantic wreckfish; and North Pacific halibut and sablefish. During the 1996 reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, Congress temporarily blocked implementation of additional IFQ programs in U.S. fisheries. In this paper, we argue that because of the emergence of an alternative, the cooperative, it is unlikely that new IFQs will be adopted in federally managed U.S. fisheries. From an economic perspective, cooperatives offer the advantage of eliminating production externalities that may …

Speed Of Innovation In High Technology Firms: Geographic And Organizational Strategies, Elsie L. Echeverri-Carroll, Lynn Hunnicutt Jan 2000

Speed Of Innovation In High Technology Firms: Geographic And Organizational Strategies, Elsie L. Echeverri-Carroll, Lynn Hunnicutt

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Competition in high technology is increasingly based on rapid innovation. But what conditions quicken innovation? Some suggest innovation is faster in firms with many related organizations located nearby. Others propose relationships with customers and suppliers as key factors in rapid innovation. We attempt to differentiate between these hypotheses. We find that local amenities determine firm location, but not innovation speed. Instead relationships with suppliers and customers are the main determinants of innovation speed.

Worldviews And The American West: The Life Of The Place Itself, Polly Stewart, Steve Siporin, C. W. Sullivan Iii, Suzi Jones

All USU Press Publications

A diverse group of writers and scholars follow the lead of noted folklorist Barre Toelken and consider, from the inside, the ways in which varied cultures in the American West understand and express their relations to the world around them. As Barre Toelken puts it in The Dynamics of Folklore, "'Worldview' refers to the manner in which a culture sees and expresses its relation to the world around it." In Worldviews and the American West, seventeen notable authors and scholars, employing diverse approaches and styles, apply Toelken's ideas about worldview to the American West. While the contributors represent a range …

Characteristics Of Bald Eagle Communal Roosts In Northern Utah And A Survey Of Eagles Occupying Roosts, Robert B. Wilson May 1999

Characteristics Of Bald Eagle Communal Roosts In Northern Utah And A Survey Of Eagles Occupying Roosts, Robert B. Wilson

Biology

The numbers of eagles occupying either the Willard Canyon roost or the Ogden Bay roost exceeded the combined total of other communal roosts documented in Utah. These roosts are among the largest known communal roosts in the lower 48 states, and the largest documented winter roosts within the McKenzie-Intermountain Flyway. During the winters of 1997-98 and 1998-99 I surveyed several Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) roost sites in northern Utah to document their geographic location, habitat, and occupancy. I conducted surveys from December 1997 to April 1998 and December 1998 to April 1999. Most winter roosts were communal, as …

The Genesis Of European Nationalism, Linda J. Thayne May 1999

The Genesis Of European Nationalism, Linda J. Thayne

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In the aftermath of the second world war to ravage Europe in a single generation, there emerged a conviction among many of the economic, political and social leaders of the most powerful nation-states of Europe and the United States that an equitable resolution to Europe's long standing national suspicions, hatreds and rivalries was crucial to prevent further warfare. For these Europeanists the means for effecting long-term peace and prosperity in Europe was the formation of an integrated European regime. Europeanists believed that the key to achieving this goal rested in their ability to intertwine the national interests of Europe's nation-states …

Utah's Rural Communities: Planning For The Future, Judith A. Kurtzman May 1999

Utah's Rural Communities: Planning For The Future, Judith A. Kurtzman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Two of the biggest concerns facing communities in the Intermountain West are the dichotomies of rapid growth and development as opposed to economic decline and stagnation. Numerous strategies have been developed by social and economic scientists to help communities manage the many problems associated with these concerns. One strategy recommended by many researchers and used by numerous communities to stabilize their economies is economic diversification. For many rural communities in Utah, tourism and recreation have been used as part of that diversification effort. Recreation and tourism also play a role in the dichotomies of rapid growth and development by often …

Adolescent Protective Factor Attainment: An Exploratory Study Of Two Select Populations, Victor W. Harris May 1999

Adolescent Protective Factor Attainment: An Exploratory Study Of Two Select Populations, Victor W. Harris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Eighty-four adolescents responded to the survey administered for this study. Thirty-eight members were from the nonadjudicated community sample (e.g., from a semirural Utah community); 46 members of a juvenile court adjudicated group (e.g., juveniles from Cache County, Utah, who were currently on probation) also responded to a paper-pencil survey asking about protective/deficit factors and involvement in problematic behaviors.

Results illustrate the differences in levels of protective/deficit factors and problem behaviors attained between these two convenience samples for a number of variables. The findings showed that the nonadjudicated group consistently reported higher levels of protective factors and lower levels of problem …

Prediction Of Suburban Encroachment On The Ethan Allen Firing Range And Camp Johnson, Chittenden County, Vermont, John D. Calandrelli May 1999

Prediction Of Suburban Encroachment On The Ethan Allen Firing Range And Camp Johnson, Chittenden County, Vermont, John D. Calandrelli

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Suburban encroachment is a growing concern for many National Guard training installations. The Ethan Allen. Firing Range and Camp Johnson, Vermont, are either experiencing or are completely enclosed by urban encroachment. The objective of this study was to analyze the trends of suburban growth within Chittenden County, Vermont, to evaluate growth and explore future training site viability of the Ethan Allen Firing Range and Camp Johnson.

This study focused on historical data, recent real estate transactions, population projections, and county plans for growth. Using historical and contemporary data, I developed a predictive model of suburban encroachment on Camp Johnson and …

Avian Community Response To Fire In A Gambel Oak Woodland, Andreas Leidolf May 1999

Avian Community Response To Fire In A Gambel Oak Woodland, Andreas Leidolf

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

I assessed avian communities of Gam bel oak (Quercus gambelii) woodland and surrounding habitats at Camp W. G. Williams State Military Reservation , Utah, during summer of 1993-1998. I used point counts and incidental observations to compile an avian checklist. I observed 100 species, accounting for one third of all birds known from Utah. Overlap in species composition among habitats was considerable, yet each habitat supported a distinct complement of common species.

I compared bird species composition, abundance, richness, and diversity before and after fire in burned and unburned Gam bel oak woodland using point counts. I also investigated how …

Influence Of Grazing, Fire, And Rainfall Regime On Plant Species Dynamics In An Ethiopian Perennial Grassland, Michael J. Jacobs May 1999

Influence Of Grazing, Fire, And Rainfall Regime On Plant Species Dynamics In An Ethiopian Perennial Grassland, Michael J. Jacobs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The dominant habitat-type of Omo National Park (ONP), Ethiopia, is grassland. This grassland supports a variety of wild herbivores and indigenous people; the latter hunt large herbivores for subsistence or graze their domestic livestock in the Park. Therefore, an understanding of grassland dynamics is a high priority for ONP management. Grazing and fire are major factors influencing species composition and vegetation change in East African grasslands. Rainfall regime, in turn, can influence both grassland response to grazing and fire. The ONP grasslands occur along a rainfall gradient ranging from subhumid to semiarid. Research objectives were to: (1) test the Milchunas, …

Over The Rim, William B. Smart, Donna T. Smart Jan 1999

Over The Rim, William B. Smart, Donna T. Smart

All USU Press Publications

Over the Rim is the first book about an important but little-known expedition sent by Brigham Young to explore southern Utah. Led by Mormon apostle Parley P. Pratt, the party traveled from Salt Lake City south across the rim of the Great Basin to the Virgin River near future St. George. They brought back to Mormon leaders their first detailed portrait of the country to the south that the church planned to settle. By 1849, the new Mormon settlement at Great Salt Lake City was taking on an air of permanence as companies of Latter-day Saints continued to arrive. Brigham …

Sagwitch, Scott R. Christensen Jan 1999

Sagwitch, Scott R. Christensen

All USU Press Publications

The Northwestern Shoshone knew as home the northern Great Salt Lake, Bear River, Cache, and Bear Lake valleys-northern Utah. Sagwitch was born at a time when his people traded with the mountain men. In the late 1850s, wagons brought Mormon farmers to settle in Cache Valley, the Northwestern Shoshone heartland. Emigrants and settlers reduced Shoshone access to traditional village sites and food resources. Relationships with the Mormons were mostly good but often strained, and the Shoshone treatment of migrants, who now traveled north and south as well as west and east through the area, was increasingly opportunistic. It only took …
