Recreational Use Of Montane Streams Of The Puerto Rican Rainforest, Summer Kartchner

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

As the population of the small island of Puerto Rico increases, so do the number of recreationists in natural areas. With increasing pressure on finite resources, managers must understand how humans are using these resources in order to conserve without limiting visitor satisfaction.

Attitudes Of University Students About Wildlife Damage Management: Effects Of Gender, Residence, And Classroom Experience, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Robert M. Timm Apr 2003

Attitudes Of University Students About Wildlife Damage Management: Effects Of Gender, Residence, And Classroom Experience, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Robert M. Timm

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

We evaluated the pre-and post-class responses of 142 university students enrolled in a 3-credit course on wildlife damage management during 1989-1996. Their knowledge of the status, distribution, and behavior of coyotes (Canis latrans) was remarkably high in the pre-and post-class surveys, yet males and urban students demonstrated an increase in knowledge after taking the course. "Specificity" was the most important factor that would influence the selection of a management technique, across gender and residence groups. Females, however, had a higher affinity for "humaneness," and "cost" was more important among males. Lethal methods of control were more acceptable to students after …

The Effects Of The Frog Eleutherodactylus Coqui On Invertebrates And Ecosystem Processes At Two Scales In The Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico, Karen H. Beard, Anne K. Eschtruth, Kristiina A. Vogt, Daniel J. Vogt, Frederick N. Scatena

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Determining the ubiquity of top-down control effects of predators on their prey and ecosystem processes is important for understanding community and ecosystem-level consequences that may result from predator loss. We conducted experiments at two spatial scales to investigate the effects of terrestrial frogs (Eleutherodactylus coqui) on aerial and litter invertebrates, plant growth and herbivory, and litter decomposition. At both scales, frogs reduced aerial invertebrates and leaf herbivory, but had no effect on litter invertebrates. At the smaller scale, frogs increased foliage production rates, measured as the number of new leaves and new leaf area produced, by 80% and decomposition rates …

Quantitative Assessment Of Habitat Preferences For The Puerto Rican Terrestrial Frog, Eleutherdoctylus Coqui, Karen H. Beard, S. Mccullough, A. K. Eschtruth

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We conducted a quantitative analysis of adult and juvenile Eleutherodactylus coqui (coquí) habitat preferences in Puerto Rico. The analysis consisted of two surveys: one to quantify potential habitat and another to quantify habitat use. Coquís were found to use most habitats available to them; however, adults and juveniles preferred different plant species, habitat structural components, and heights from the forest floor. Adult and juvenile coquís had opposite associations with many important plant species in the forest (e.g., Prestoea montana and Heliconia carabea) and habitat structural components. Adults had a negative association with leaves and a positive association with leaf litter. …

Fostering Creativity In The Environmental Classroom : Seeking Creative Solutions Through Active Participation, Carole F. Robinson, Peter J. Kakela

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Complex environmental issues and constant change call for creative and innovative solutions. We believe critical thinking in the area of environmental studies is imperative both in and out of the classroom. Exercise: “Creatively Controlling Campus Crud: Design a Better Pizza Box.” This is a multifaceted exercise that we created and currently use in the core environmental studies class in the Department of Resource Development at Michigan State University. This exercise provides space for creative approaches to the complex environmental issue of waste on the campus. Discarded pizza boxes are the number one cause of waste on the MSU campus. Their …

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

During the past year, members of the Sustainable Forestry Partnership, in cooperation with other forestry schools, with funding from the several private foundations and USDA, have been exploring approaches for enhancing graduate education programs to foster adoption of Sustainable Forest Management curriculum concepts. Ten National Association of Professional Forestry Schools and Colleges (NAPFSC) members have conducted two focus groups to gain understanding of curriculum opportunities and challenges. The findings from these focus groups will be reported out at a national conference in Kansas City in November 2001. That assembled group will begin to discuss ways and approaches for cooperating across …

Looking Before We Leap: A Three-Part Study To Prepare For College Reorganization, Claudia L. Anderson, Mark W. Brunson Jan 2002

Looking Before We Leap: A Three-Part Study To Prepare For College Reorganization, Claudia L. Anderson, Mark W. Brunson

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

In Spring 2001 the College of Natural Resources at Utah State University voted on a plan for reorganization of departments and curricula that is intended to better reflect future natural resource science and management needs. To prepare for curriculum redesign we evaluated the career objectives and educational needs of undergraduate students in natural resources and related fields by means of a three-part study of relevant groups: current students, public agency professionals, and prospective students who chose nonnatural resources majors. Students typically seek traditional jobs with public agencies, but a large proportion also expect to attend graduate school. Comparison of seniors …

Responses Of Sphagnum And Carex Peatlands To Ultraviolet-B Radiation, And A Meta-Analysis Of Uv-B Effects On Vascular Plants, Peter S. Searles May 2000

Responses Of Sphagnum And Carex Peatlands To Ultraviolet-B Radiation, And A Meta-Analysis Of Uv-B Effects On Vascular Plants, Peter S. Searles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The severity of stratospheric ozone depletion in the temperate and polar latitudes has raised concerns about the sensitivity of terrestrial vegetation and ecosystems to solar ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation. This dissertation examined the responses of plants and microbes to solar UV-B for 3 years in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina (55° S). This region is under the influence of the Antarctic "ozone hole" during the austral spring. Additionally, a quantitative review of the UV-B literature was conducted using a set of statistical techniques known as meta-analysis.

For the field studies in Tierra del Fuego, plots were established in a Sphagnum moss peatland …

Ultraviolet-B Radiation: Effects On Pollen Of 34 Taxa, And Inheritance Patterns And Carryover Of Radiation Response In Arabidopsis, Javad Torabinejad

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although considerable research has addressed effects of elevated ultraviolet-B (UV-8) radiation on vegetative plant structures and processes, the reproductive biology and patterns of inheritance of UV-B tolerance have received much less attention. I examined the effects of UV-B radiation on pollen of 34 taxa. I also addressed questions concerning the patterns of inheritance of UV-B tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana and examined potential cumulative carryover effects of UV-B exposure through multiple generations of this species.

In the first study, a significant reduction in pollen germination occurred in only five species, but pollen tube growth in more than half of the species …

Molecular Characterization Of Soil Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria Based On The Genes Encoding Ammonia Monooxygenase, Jose Javier Alzerreca May 1999

Molecular Characterization Of Soil Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria Based On The Genes Encoding Ammonia Monooxygenase, Jose Javier Alzerreca

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are chemolithotrophs that oxidize ammonia/ammonium to nitrite in a two-step process to obtain energy for survival. AOB are difficult to isolate from the environment and iso lated strains may not represent the diversity in soil. A genetic database and molecular tools were developed based on the ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) encoding genes that can be used to assess the diversity of AOB that exist in soil and aquatic environments without the isolation of pure cultures. The amo genes have excellent potential as molecular markers; since AMO is only found in the AOB and is essential for their metabolism, …

Comment, D. Rochleau, Claudia Radel Jan 1999

Comment, D. Rochleau, Claudia Radel

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Brosius raises a series of questions that emanate from recent encounters between critical anthropology and environmental discourses and movements. Drawing upon insights from feminist theory, we propose to expand and enrich these questions as they relate to intersections of identity and environmental movements, policy, and positionality. Brosius’s analysis of research on environmental social movements, discourse, and images repeatedly touches on the complex processes of identity and representation. Perhaps most striking is his implicit dichotomization of essential and strategic identities. Our comments first focus on the issue of environmental essentialisms, their deployment by various actors, and their potential unmasking by researchers. …
