Changes In Quality Of Bone Mineral On Aging And In Disease, M. D. Grynpas, D. Holmyard Jan 1988

Changes In Quality Of Bone Mineral On Aging And In Disease, M. D. Grynpas, D. Holmyard

Scanning Microscopy

This paper reviews the changes in the quality of bone mineral with age and in disease. After a brief review of morphological changes with aging in mammalian bones, microradiography is compared to backscattered electron imaging and their use in bringing out subtle changes in bone mineralization outlined.

Changes in the quality of bone with disease is described using osteoporosis as an example. Chemical changes in the skeleton are then discussed and related to morphological changes. Finally, some examples of localized and generalized changes in bone mineral are given. This paper emphasizes that understanding the nature of the mineral phase in …

Quantitative Electron Probe X-Ray Microanalysis Of Lead-Sequestering Organelles In Earthworms: Technical Appraisal Of Air-Dried Smears And Freeze-Dried Cryosections, C. Winters, A. J. Morgan Jan 1988

Quantitative Electron Probe X-Ray Microanalysis Of Lead-Sequestering Organelles In Earthworms: Technical Appraisal Of Air-Dried Smears And Freeze-Dried Cryosections, C. Winters, A. J. Morgan

Scanning Microscopy

Much of the current knowledge of Pb sequestration in earthworm chloragosome granules stems from quantitative and semi-quantitative Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPXMA) of unfixed, air-dried tissue smears. Fully quantitative EPXMA was used in this study to assess the validity of smearing by comparison with unfixed, freeze-dried cryosections. Samples were obtained from two earthworm species, Lumbricus rubellus (L.r.) and Dendrobaena rubida (D.r.) collected from a Pb and Zn polluted soil (confirmed by XRF). A number of conclusions emerged :- (a) the element compositions of whole worms, determined by EPXMA of sprayed microdroplets of wet-digested tissues, were different …

Quench Cooled Ice Crystal Imprint Size: A Micro-Method For Study Of Macromolecular Hydration, Ivan L. Cameron, Keithley E. Hunter, Gary D. Fullerton Jan 1988

Quench Cooled Ice Crystal Imprint Size: A Micro-Method For Study Of Macromolecular Hydration, Ivan L. Cameron, Keithley E. Hunter, Gary D. Fullerton

Scanning Microscopy

Quench cooling (rate > 4000°C/sec) of biological specimens limits growth of ice crystals by processes different from slow cooling methods. Quench cooling in liquid propane cooled in liquid nitrogen induced ice crystal segregation compartments, as imaged by scanning transmission electron micrographs of freeze-dried cryosections of tissues and protein solutions. The observed imprints of ice crystals were relatively small and roughly spherical. The size of these ice crystal imprints increased with distance from the specimen/quenchant surface. Beyond a depth of 150 microns the size of the imprints was constant but differed among subcellular compartments. The size of the imprints was found to …

Appearance Potential Spectroscopy Of Solid Surfaces, D. R. Chopra, A. R. Chourasia Jan 1988

Appearance Potential Spectroscopy Of Solid Surfaces, D. R. Chopra, A. R. Chourasia

Scanning Microscopy

Among the techniques utilized for the study of unfilled density of states above the Fermi level in a system, appearance potential spectroscopy (APS) has emerged as one of the simplest. Some review papers on APS have appeared in the last decade. Since then APS has been applied to several interesting systems, the studies of which have been limited by other experimental techniques available. This paper reviews some of these applications of APS. We discuss briefly the one-electron theory describing the APS process and outline the basic experimental set-ups used by workers in this field. We then survey some important applications …

Surface Analysis Of Tarnished Dental Alloys, H. J. Mueller, J. W. Lenke, M. S. Bapna

Scanning Microscopy

Six crown and bridge alloys ranging in nobility between 25-63 wt % (18-45 at %) were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), as well as by L*a*b* colorimetry before and after in vitro tarnishing in artificial saliva with and without additions of 0.00016, 0.016, and 1.6 % Na2S with a rotating wheel apparatus. All alloys except the lowest of 18 at % changed colors to about the same degree after 72 h of tarnishing. All alloys decreased in L*, while increased in both a* and b*, …

Elemental Microanalysis Of Biological Specimens, Godfried M. Roomans, Joanna Wroblewski, Romuald Wróblewski Jan 1988

Elemental Microanalysis Of Biological Specimens, Godfried M. Roomans, Joanna Wroblewski, Romuald Wróblewski

Scanning Microscopy

Although X-ray microanalysis in the electron microscope is the most common method for microanalysis of biological specimens, other methods of elemental microanalysis (electron energy loss spectroscopy, scanning Auger microanalysis, and proton, ion, and laser microprobe analysis) may provide important complementary information and help overcome some of the limitations of electron probe X-ray microanalysis. Despite differences in physical principles and instrumentation, the various microanalytical methods have much in common with regard to specimen preparation, quantitative analysis, and interpretation of analytical data. A common approach to microanalytical problems in the biological sciences, irrespective of the analytical techniques used, seems therefore indicated.

Comparison Of Simultaneous Chatanika And Millstone Hill Temperature Measurements With Ionospheric Model Predictions, C. E. Rasmussen, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, Vincent B. Wickwar, O. De La Beaujariere, J. Foster, J. Holt Jan 1988

Comparison Of Simultaneous Chatanika And Millstone Hill Temperature Measurements With Ionospheric Model Predictions, C. E. Rasmussen, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, Vincent B. Wickwar, O. De La Beaujariere, J. Foster, J. Holt

All Physics Faculty Publications

As part of the MITHRAS program, the Chatanika and Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radars made coordinated observations of the polar ionosphere on June 27 and 28, 1981. The temperature data obtained during these days were compared with predictions made by a high-latitude ionospheric model. The comparison of the temperature measurements and the results of the ionospheric model depend on the assumptions made both in reducing the data and on the inputs that are needed by the model. The deduction of electron temperature from radar measurements depends upon a knowledge of the mean ion mass as a function of altitude. The …

Experimental Study Of Incipient Motion In Mixed-Size Sediment, Peter Wilcock, J. B. Southard Jan 1988

Experimental Study Of Incipient Motion In Mixed-Size Sediment, Peter Wilcock, J. B. Southard

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Transport rates of five sediments were measured in a laboratory flume. Three of these sediments had the same mean size, the same size distribution shape, and different values of grain size distribution standard deviation. The critical shear stress for incipient motion of the individual size fractions within these sediments was estimated as that shear stress that produced a small dimensionless transport rate. The sorting of the sediment mixture had little effect on the critical shear stress of individual fractions, once the median size (D50) of the mixture and a fraction's relative size (Di/D50) are accounted for. Our data, combined with …

Methods For Estimating The Critical Shear Stress Of Individual Of Individual Fractions In Mixed-Size Sediment, Peter Wilcock Jan 1988

Methods For Estimating The Critical Shear Stress Of Individual Of Individual Fractions In Mixed-Size Sediment, Peter Wilcock

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Two methods are commonly used to estimate the critical shear stress of individual fractions in mixed-size sediment, one using the largest grain displaced, the other using the shear stress that produces a small value of transport rate for each fraction. The initial-motion results produced by the two methods are typically different: largest-grain critical shear stresses vary with roughly the square root of grain size, and reference transport critical shear stresses show little variation with grain size. Comparison of the two methods is seldom possible because both methods can rarely be applied to the same data. The one case known for …

Evaluating Statistical Techniques For Predicting And Interpreting Forplan Results, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

Two approaches using multiple linear regression for analyzing the effects of management constraints on an objective function in FORPLAN were tested on three National Forests. The two approaches, ordinary least squares regression and ordinary least squares using principal components, provide some degree of success in predicting objective function values, but very little information for interpreting the effects of the constraints on objective function values.

A Photochemical Equilibrium Model For Ionospheric Conductivity, C. E. Rasmussen, Robert W. Schunk, Vincent B. Wickwar Jan 1988

A Photochemical Equilibrium Model For Ionospheric Conductivity, C. E. Rasmussen, Robert W. Schunk, Vincent B. Wickwar

All Physics Faculty Publications

A photochemical equilibrium model of the high-latitude ionosphere has been developed. This model provides densities of the ionospheric constituents, N2 +, O2 +, O+, and NO+, from 85 km to approximately 220 km. These densities are then used to calculate Pedersen and Hall conductivities. A comparison of the model results with Arecibo and Chatanika radar observations was made, covering periods of solar minimum and solar maximum. The comparison showed the model to predict ionospheric densities to within 50% and conductivities to within 40% in the illuminated portion of the ionosphere. In regions …

Pictures Past: A Centennial Celebration Of Utah State University, A J. Simmonds

Utah State University Faculty Monographs

This book does not pretend to present a comprehensive history of Utah State University. It cannot. It presents glimpses of that institution, glimpses that can be documented by the photographs preserved in University Archives. Entire areas of the University's past are ignored for no better reason than that no one had an available camera to record them; or that, once recorded, they never found their way into University Archives. The entire story is not told. That is the responsibility of another. I leave it to him. And if these pages are much concerned with the early years when the institution …

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Cellular Structure Of Granny Smith And Red Delicious Apples, Gassinee Trakoontivakorn, Max E. Patterson, Barry G. Swanson Jan 1988

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Cellular Structure Of Granny Smith And Red Delicious Apples, Gassinee Trakoontivakorn, Max E. Patterson, Barry G. Swanson

Food Structure

Immature and mature Granny Smith and Red Delicious apples (Malus domestica Borkh . ) were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Parenchyma cells were observed to form a net-like pattern in sections transverse to the stem-calyx of the apple. Bundles of about six intact cells were connected, creating large intercellular spaces. The intercellular spaces were different in shape from different perspectives to the cut surfaces ; round in stem-calyx transverse sections and elliptical in stem-calyx cross sections. Cell areas, cell lengths and intercellular space areas were determined with image analysis. The patterns of mature apple cell structure of both cultivars …

Application Of Scanning Electron Microscopy And X-Ray Microanalysis To Investigate Corrosion Problems In Plain Tinplate Food Cans And Examine Glass And Glass-Like Particles Found In Canned Food, James E. Charbonneau

Food Structure

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Microanalysis (EDS) have been used to investigate product container interaction problems in plain tinplate metal food containers and to examine glass and glass-like particles that were found in canned food.

Through the use of SEM-EDS, it was determined that: sulfate containing particles from the cannery cooling water reacted with exposed iron or tin-iron alloy on the tinplate surface causing an external rusting problem; sulfur dioxide was responsible for a container discoloration and a pitting corrosion problem in canned fruit nectar; hydrogen sulfide produced from the SO2-tinplate reaction was the cause of an associated off-odor …

Effects Of Lignification, Cellulose Crystallinity And Enzyme Accessible Space On The Digestibility Of Plant Cell Wall Carbohydrates By The Ruminant, M. S. Kerley, G. C. Fahey Jr., J. M. Gould, E. L. Iannotti Jan 1988

Effects Of Lignification, Cellulose Crystallinity And Enzyme Accessible Space On The Digestibility Of Plant Cell Wall Carbohydrates By The Ruminant, M. S. Kerley, G. C. Fahey Jr., J. M. Gould, E. L. Iannotti

Food Structure

Intrinsic characteristics of plant cell walls limiting susceptibility of structural carbohydrates to microbial attack in the ruminant's gastrointestinal tract are lignification of the cell wall, covalent bonding of phenolic acids to cell wall polysaccharides, the crystalline structure of cellulose and limited fibrolytic enzyme accessible space. The exact mechanism by which or degree to which each of these characteristics affect rate and/or extent of cell wall polysaccharide hydrolysis by gastrointestinal tract microbes is not well understood. Lignification and limited enzyme accessible space probably affect the extent of cell wall degradation by preventing contact between microbial enzymes and cell wall polysaccharides. Phenolic …

Amino Acid Composition And Structure Of Cheese Baked As A Pizza Ingredient In Conventional And Microwave Ovens, Alenka Paquet, Miloslav Kalab Jan 1988

Amino Acid Composition And Structure Of Cheese Baked As A Pizza Ingredient In Conventional And Microwave Ovens, Alenka Paquet, Miloslav Kalab

Food Structure

Amino acid compositions of stirred-curd Mozzarella, stretched Mozzarella, and process Cheddar cheeses were similar and did not change as the result of baking in a conventional oven. D-glutamic acid (D0Glue) and D-phenyl-alanine (D-Phe) were present at low concentrations in all cheese samples, the lowest concentrations having been found in unbaked stirred-curd Mozzarella cheese (2.7% D-Glu of total Glu present and <1.0% D-Phe of total Phe present). The highest concentrations were detected in unbaked stretched Mozzarella cheese (5.6% and 1.2%, respectively). Thechanges were not significant and were not the result of aking, indicating that the heat treatment during baking did n ot cause racemization of the amino acids.

Each cheese had a characteristic structure before baking. The structures of the Mozzarella cheeses were altered by baking in the conventional oven and also in a microwave oven and their original features such as curd granule junction and fat globule …

Spectral Momentum Density From Graphite From (E,2e) Spectroscopy: Comparison With First Principles Calculations, Chao Gao, A. L. Ritter, Jr Dennison, N. A. W. Holzwarth

Journal Articles

We have measured the spectral momentum density p(E,q) of graphite by (e,2e) spectroscopy for momentum parallel and perpendicular to the crystal c axis. In the independent-electron approximation, p(E,q) = ΣG |Uk(G)|2 δ(q-k-G)δ(E-E(k)) where the one-electron wave function is Ψk(r) = eik•rΣGUk(G)eiG•r and G is a reciprocal-lattice vector. The measurements covered a range of momentum parallel to the c axis equal to 0 ≤ |q| ≤ 1.84Å-1 and a …

Tall Shrub Dynamics In Northern Minnesota Aspen And Conifer Forests, J.C. Balogh, D.F. Grigal

Aspen Bibliography

Tall shrubs are a dynamic component of upland forests in the Lake States (Balogh 1983, Dunn 1986, Ohmann and Ream 1971). They are an integral part of forest element cycles, competitors with overstory for growth and reproduction, essential to post-harvest site stabilization, and a source of wildlife cover and browse (Comerford and White 1977, Dunn 1986, Robinette 1972, Tappeiner 1971).

Theoretical Vibrational Study Of The Fx⋅⋅⋅O(Ch3)2 Hydrogen‐Bonded Complex, Y. Bouteiller, C. Mijoule, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

This paper presents the first ab initio attempt to reconstruct the observed band profile of the stretching fundamental vFX (X=H,D) in the FX⋅⋅⋅O(CH3)2 hydrogen‐bonded system. The two‐dimensional potential energy surface V(rFH,RF⋅⋅⋅O) is evaluated by means of large basis set SCF calculations. The related force constants up to the fourth order are obtained via the analytical fit to a polynomial expansion. The vibrational problem is solved by means of a variational treatment which includes the effects of mechanical anharmonicity. The side bands of the …

Vibrational Frequencies And Intensities Of H‐Bonded And Li‐Bonded Complexes. H3n⋅⋅Hcl And H3n⋅⋅Licl, M. M. Szczesniak, I. J. Kurnig, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The geometries, energetics, and vibrational spectra are calculated for the two complexes at the SCF and correlated MP2 levels using the 6‐31G∗∗ basis set, augmented by a second set of d functions on Cl. While correlation represents an important factor in the binding of H3 N⋅⋅HCl, it contributes little to the stronger Li bond. Unlike the HCl stretch νs which decreases substantially in frequency and is greatly intensified in H3 N⋅⋅HCl, the frequency of the LiCl stretch undergoes an increase and little change is noted in its intensity, conforming to prior spectral measurements. The intensities of the …

Biological Transformation And Detoxification Of 7,12-Dimethylbenzanthracene In Soil, K. Park, Ronald C. Sims, W. J. Doucette, J. E. Matthews

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Biological transformation and detoxification of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anathracene (DMBA) were studied in a nonacclimated sandy loam soil. Parent 14C DMBA biodegraded extensively (62% to 20%), accompanying an increase of metabolite 14C fraction (4% to 53%). Incorporation of DMBA into non extractable soil residue ,4C increased from 12 to 17%, but the increase was not statistically significant. DMBA was transformed into several metabolic products in the soil system, including 4-hydroxy-, 5-hydroxy-, and 10-hydroxy-DMBA and 7,12-dihydro 12-methyl-7-methylene-benz(a)anthracene-12-ol. High polarity transformation products of DMBA demonstrated a negative mu tagenic response with the Ames mutagenicity assay, strain TA 100, for both low and neutral pH soils. …
