Measurement And Simulation Of One-Dimensional Transient Three Phase Flow For Monotonic Liquid Drainage, R. J. Lenhard, J. Dane, J. C. Parker, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Simultaneous movement of oil, water, and air in a sandy porous medium was investigated experimentally under transient flow conditions and results were compared to numerical simulations employing a finite element multiphase flow code. The liquid hydrocarbon was Soltrol 170, a low-density branched alkane mixture. Liquid saturations were measured using a collinear dual-energy gamma radiation apparatus and liquid pressures were measured using hydrophilic (untreated) and hydrophobic (treated) ceramic tensiometers connected to pressure transducers. The experimental regime was selected to impose monotonically draining water and total liquid saturation paths to avoid hysteretic effects. Measured saturations and pressures are compared to values obtained …

The Role Of Scanning Electron Microscopy In Ophthalmic Science, P. Versura, M. C. Maltarello May 1988

The Role Of Scanning Electron Microscopy In Ophthalmic Science, P. Versura, M. C. Maltarello

Scanning Microscopy

The eyeglobe is one of the classical domains of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) in biology as it exposes several inner and outer surfaces. Both corneal and conjunctival epithelia towards the tear film as well as the corneal endothelial cells facing the anterior chamber may be accurately evaluated. The architecture of the angle and particularly the morphology of the Schlemm's canal inner wall are clarified by SEM more than by TEM serial reconstruction. The surfaces of the iris and ciliary body, the zonula and the choroidal vessel arrangement are described in great detail. Three distinct types of membrane anchoring devices are …

Evidence Of Variable Zn/Fe In Zinc-Ferrites Produced From Roasting Of Zinc Sulphide Concentrate, R. Lastra, N. Rowlands, J. A. Finch May 1988

Evidence Of Variable Zn/Fe In Zinc-Ferrites Produced From Roasting Of Zinc Sulphide Concentrate, R. Lastra, N. Rowlands, J. A. Finch

Scanning Microscopy

Zn-Fe-O phases formed during roasting of concentrates from zinc sulfide ores produce soluble zinc oxide, oxy-sulfates and insoluble ferrite compounds. The ferrites have a general formula ZnOFe2O3. However, these ferrites have a range of magnetic properties, suggesting variable stoichiometry. Scanning electron microscopy has been used to obtain the general relationship between the Zn/Fe ratio of the ferrites and their magnetic susceptibility.

Enamel Of Yalkaparidon Coheni: Representative Of A Distinctive Order Of Tertiary Zalambdodont Marsupials, K. S. Lester, M. Archer, C. F. Gilkeson, T. Rich May 1988

Enamel Of Yalkaparidon Coheni: Representative Of A Distinctive Order Of Tertiary Zalambdodont Marsupials, K. S. Lester, M. Archer, C. F. Gilkeson, T. Rich

Scanning Microscopy

The enamel of an incisor and a premolar of Yalkaparidon coheni was examined by scanning electron microscopy in fractured and in sectioned, polished surfaces. The enamel of both teeth demonstrated: complete, ovoid and horse-shoe shaped prisms in a Pattern 2 arrangement; a simple parallel prism course; and, enamel tubules in abundance in the premolar but restricted to the innermost enamel in the incisor. Overall, the enamel ultrastructure supports the marsupial affiliation proposed for Yalkaparidon coheni but does not unambiguously ally it with any other order of marsupials.

The observation of a significant ultrastructural difference between the anterior and posterior teeth …

Effects Of Macrocyclic Trichothecene Mycotoxins On The Murine Immune System, Brian J. Hughes May 1988

Intracellular Water Distribution And Aging As Examined By X-Ray Microanalysis, Thomas Von Zglinicki May 1988

Intracellular Water Distribution And Aging As Examined By X-Ray Microanalysis, Thomas Von Zglinicki

Scanning Microscopy

The results reviewed here demonstrate that 1. the distribution of dry mass as observed in frozen-dried cryosections might be used as an unbiased measure of intracellular dry mass resp. water distributions in the tissue in vivo and 2. the well-known loss of water from cells during aging is solely due to a water loss from mitochondria without changes in the water content of all other components of the cell in the case of rat liver and heart muscle.

The reason for the water loss might be increased counter ion binding by membrane-bound enzymes due to decreased fluidity of the inner …

Effect Of Bacterial Inoculant On Alfalfa Haylage: Ensiling Characteristics And Milk Production Response When Fed To Dairy Cows In Early Lactation, Barb Kent May 1988

Third-cutting alfalfa hay harvested at bud stage in each of 2 yrs, treated with a live bacterial inoculant, packed in polyethylene-bonded bags and allowed to ensile. In both years, treated haylage had a lower pH, and a period effect was found for pH and mold count, regardless of treatment. In year 1, there was a period effect found for acid detergent fiber. In year 2, mean lactic-acid-producing bacteria numbers (log 10) were significantly higher for treated haylage (9.69 and 10.36) for control and treated haylage, respectively). Regardless of treatment, lactic-acid-producing bacteria numbers and water soluble carbohydrates significantly declined through time. …

Morphometric Variation In Accipiter Hawks With Emphasis On Western North America, Jeff P. Smith May 1988

Morphometric Variation In Accipiter Hawks With Emphasis On Western North America, Jeff P. Smith

Biology

Measurements from more than 5,000 Sharp-shinned Hawks, Accipiter striatus, Cooper's Hawks, A. cooperii,, and Northern Goshawks, A. gentilis, trapped on the Goshute Mountains of eastern Nevada, were compiled. New species identification and sexing criteria were derived for accipiters in western North America. Goshute migrants averaged proportionately the longest wings and tails but weighed Jess than migrants from Marin Headlands, CA, Cedar Grove, WI, and Cape May Point, NJ. Interior migrants averaged less weight and longer wings and tails than coastal migrants. It is suggested that low flight-loading might be adaptive for migrating long distances, inhabiting open country, or …

Maternal, Obstetric, And Neonatal Correlates Of Short-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome In Newborn Infants With Intraventricular Hemorrhage, Richard Elghammer May 1988

Maternal, Obstetric, And Neonatal Correlates Of Short-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome In Newborn Infants With Intraventricular Hemorrhage, Richard Elghammer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The attempt to identify risk factors or correlates of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) has been constrained by conflicting research findings, changing hypotheses about the etiology of IVH, and by the exceedingly complex nature of this neurological disorder. In addition, few studies have investigated the possibility that antenatal factors might predispose the infant to IVH. Thus, research aimed at identifying IVH correlates from all time periods in which stress could occur to the neonate needs to be undertaken. This study was conducted for the purpose of identifying and quantifying correlates of IVH by constructing an interactive statistical model to predict the occurrence, …

In addition, there were no differences between service number (3 or 4), relative value group, …

Comparison Of Bootstrap With Other Tests For Several Distributions, Yu-Yu Wong May 1988

Comparison Of Bootstrap With Other Tests For Several Distributions, Yu-Yu Wong

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper discusses results of a computer simulation to investigate several different tests when sampling several distributions. The hypothesis H0: μ=0 was tested against H0: μ≠0, using the usual t-test, trimmed t-test, the Jackkinfe, the Bootstrap and signed-rank test. The p-values and empirical power show that the Bootstrap is as good as the t-test. The Jackknife procedure is too liberal, always obtaining small p-values. The signed-rank is a fairly good test if the data follows the Cauchy Distribution.

Measuring Adolescent Ego-Identity Status: A Comparison Of The Semistructured Interview And The Objective Measure Of Ego-Identity Status, Layne D. Bennion May 1988

Measuring Adolescent Ego-Identity Status: A Comparison Of The Semistructured Interview And The Objective Measure Of Ego-Identity Status, Layne D. Bennion

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Erikson's (1980) conceptualizations of the adolescent developmental task of identity development as operationalized by Marcia (1966) into four statuses (identity achieved, moratorium, foreclosure and diffusion) have been measured by both interviews and questionnaires. Research using Marcia's (1966) Ego Identity Interview and studies incorporating the Adams and colleagues' Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status (EOM-EIS) questionnaire have been reported as having acceptable levels of reliability and validity. However direct status-to-status comparisons of the OM-EIS and the Marcia interview identity status classifications have shown only moderate agreement. This study re-examined the internal consistency and construct validity of the EOM-EIS and the …

Investigation Of Accuracy Limitations Of The Ionospheric Plasma Frequency Probe And Recommendations For A New Instrument, Mark Duane Jensen May 1988

Investigation Of Accuracy Limitations Of The Ionospheric Plasma Frequency Probe And Recommendations For A New Instrument, Mark Duane Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A unique wide-range voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) has been part of the plasma frequency probe (PFP) for many years. The uniqueness of this VCO is how it is tuned with an electronic tuneable inductor in conjunction with a varactor diode. Though the PFP has been utilized successfully for rocketborne ionospheric electron density measurements, fine resolution data was limited by strange frequency jumps (approximately 5 percent uncertainty in electron density) which have appeared in flight results. This thesis examines the cause of some of these jumps, and shows they are instrument related and more particularly caused by the ferrite tank inductor core …

The Relationship Between Congruence Among Communication Channels And Degree Of Mental Health, Karen R. Seibel May 1988

The Relationship Between Congruence Among Communication Channels And Degree Of Mental Health, Karen R. Seibel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Writers from a number of theoretical backgrounds have asserted that agreement in the emotional messages conveyed by various verbal and nonverbal communication channels is related to the communicator's psychological health. If this conjecture is accurate, then congruence among communication channels could be used as a behaviorally based assessment tool. However, empirical research to test this theoretical and clinical assumption is relatively lacking. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that individuals who display congruence (agreement) between verbal (language), verbal/vocal (language plus paralinguistic cues, or speech) and nonverbal (facial) channels of communication will show a greater degree of mental …

Interactions Of Vanadium Compounds With Reducing Equivalents: Evidence Of Free Radical Involvement And Possible Mechanisms Of Toxicity, Randal J. Keller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Vanadium compounds have been reported to cause numerous toxicological effects including NAD(P)H oxidation and lipid peroxidation. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the active form of vanadium in causing these effects, and to determine any possible free radical involvement in these processes. Vanadium-stimulated oxidation of NADH was studied spectrophotometrically and by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. In 25 mM sodium phosphate buffer at pH 7. 4, vanadyl, (V(IV)), is slightly more effective in stimulating NADH oxidation than was vanadate (V(V)). Addition of a superoxide generating system, xanthine/xanthine oxidase, results in a marked increase in NADH oxidation by vanadyl, and …
