Structure Of Rat Kidneys Following Microwave Accelerated Fixation, Jayashree A. Gokhale, Saeed R. Khan May 1992

Structure Of Rat Kidneys Following Microwave Accelerated Fixation, Jayashree A. Gokhale, Saeed R. Khan

Scanning Microscopy

In contrast to fixation of tissue in externally heated fixative, microwave-irradiation can generate uniform internal heat, which is of utmost importance for successful fixation of biological tissue. To evaluate the effectiveness of microwave-accelerated chemical fixation, we compared the structure of rat kidney fixed by a conventional method and a microwave-accelerated method, by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Following perfusion, rat kidney pieces 1-2 mm in size were irradiated in Karnovsky's fixative in a domestic Amana microwave oven, till the temperature of the fixative reached 45-50°C. For conventional fixation, tissue pieces were fixed overnight at room temperature in the same fixative. …

Effect Of Retinyl Acetate On Fibronectin And The Fibronectin Receptor Level In C3h/10t1/2 Mouse Embryo Fibroblast Cells During Transformation, Satoshi Suzuki

Biology

Fibronectin is involved in a variety of biological events such as cellular adhesion, cell growth, wound healing, and malignant transformation. In vitro, chemically or retrovirally transformed fibroblasts show a reduced ability to assemble a fibronectin-extracellular matrix. Very little is known about mechanisms of extracellular matrix assembly and the reduced assembly mechanism during cell transformation. This study was conducted to determine the importance of fibronectin integrity in tumor promotion. C3H/10T1/2 cells and several derivatives were utilized in this study. One such derivative used is the INIT/10T1/2 cell, which is a clone of methylcholanthrene-initiated C3H/10T1/2 cells and which has been inhibited from …

To work together effectively, these groups must reach an understanding of what comprises …

The Proposed Use Of An Anatomically Marked Presurgically Fitted Prostheses With Infants Who Have Unrepaired Cleft Palates, Amy Moser May 1992

The Proposed Use Of An Anatomically Marked Presurgically Fitted Prostheses With Infants Who Have Unrepaired Cleft Palates, Amy Moser

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Approximately one out of every 750 children are born with some type of an oral cleft (McWilliams, Morris, & Shelton, 1984) Children with clefts of the palate in general have a higher incidence of articulation disorders than do children without clefts. Typical speech problems which tend to occur are hypernasality and multiple articulation errors, often consisting of atypical tongue placement in the mouth or nontypical articulation at sites in the larynx or pharynx. These speech problems can be severe and may require years of expensive, long-term professional treatment to remediate.

A Critique Of "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis", Kyle Robson May 1992

A Critique Of "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis", Kyle Robson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The nature of deity through out the history of philosophy has always been a subject of debate, from some of the earliest writings, philosophers and theologians have given arguments for and against the existence and nature of God. Beckwith and Parrish, in "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis," add another page to this on-going debate with their attack of the "Mormon concept of God." In the introduction Beckwith and Parrish explain that it is their aim to show

(1) that the Mormon concept of God differs radically from the classical concept of God,

(2) that the Mormon concept …

Facilitating Acceptance Of Alternative Communication Devices In Classrooms By Teachers, Tracie Empey May 1992

Facilitating Acceptance Of Alternative Communication Devices In Classrooms By Teachers, Tracie Empey

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

There exists a number of persons who lack adequate speech for communicative purposes. Many of the non-vocal children and adults from these populations have benefitted from the development of various alternative communication devices. The non-vocal individual is one whose speech does not provide a functional means of meeting communication needs. However, this does not necessarily mean that the non-vocal individual has no speech or vocalization at all, nor does it mean that the individual may not develop fully functional speech in the future. (Vanderheiden, 1975). The devices used with these people allow an increase in the abilities to meet various …

Bilingual Interpreter Paraprofessional Training Program In The Field Of Communicative Disorders, Susie Yoakum, Tyler Sorenson May 1992

Bilingual Interpreter Paraprofessional Training Program In The Field Of Communicative Disorders, Susie Yoakum, Tyler Sorenson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Because of the ever increasing number of non- (NEP) and Limited- (LEP) English Proficient persons in the United States, the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) working in the public school setting is currently faced with the challenge of developing effective strategies for the assessment and identification of bilingual children with communicative disorders. One of the responsibilities of the SLP is to administer tests to children with suspected communicative disorders. However, it is difficult for a monolingual, English speaking SLP to effectively assess the speech and language of a non- or limited-English speaking child because of the language barrier that is present. In …

Interactions In Sibling Dyads With One Preschool-Aged Child With A Disability, Carl R. Summers May 1992

Interactions In Sibling Dyads With One Preschool-Aged Child With A Disability, Carl R. Summers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A number of previous researchers have concluded a higher incidence of behavioral and psychological problems exists among children who are siblings of children with disabilities than among children whose siblings have no disabilities. There is some evidence in previous research that the incidence of behavioral and psychological problems may be attributable to differences in sib ling interaction patterns; specifically, frequency of interaction, imitation, agonism, dominance, and prosocial behavior. In this study, observational techniques were used to determine imitation, agonism, dominance, and prosocial behavior for two groups of children: 1) those whose siblings were disabled, and 2) those whose siblings had …

Similarities Within Adolescent Friendship Pairs: The Relationship Between The Strength And Qualities Of Friendship And The Individuals' Ego Identity Development, James F. Akers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Current theory and research have suggested that adolescent friends share many similarities which range from strong similarities in sociodemographic variables to weaker correlations for personality characteristics. The goal of this study was to advance the base of knowledge related to similarities between friends by exploring relationships between early adolescent ego identity status and friendship strength, quality, and duration. First, the objective measure of Ego Identity Status was used to test the hypothesis that early adolescents in reciprocally identified friendship pairs are more similar in their ego identity status; no such relationship was found. Second, a measure designed to assess friendship …

The Paleoecology And Geomorphology Of Holocene Deposits Of The Southern Malad River, Box Elder County, Utah, Ann Schaffer Elder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Widespread Lake Bonneville sediments have been modified by river aggradation and degradation associated with Holocene fluctuations in the Great Salt Lake. Exposures of exceptionally abundant and well-preserved molluscan deposits in the Bear River Valley, Utah, allow detailed paleoenvironmental reconstruction of Holocene environments. The exposed basal unit consists of largely unfossiliferous deltaic silts and clays deposited during Lake Bonneville time (roughly 11,000 - 13,000 yr B. P.). An unconformity representing at least 2000 yr separates the deltaic material from overlying highly fossiliferous stream sands. Eight species of molluscs, comprising a single community, occupied this low energy stream environment at 7690 ± …

Factors That Explain Changes In The Level Of Human Capital Of Children With Disabilities, Linda D. Goetze May 1992

Factors That Explain Changes In The Level Of Human Capital Of Children With Disabilities, Linda D. Goetze

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation combines concepts from the human capital and early intervention literature to develop a theoretical and empirical model of child development relationships. This model is empirically estimated using data from the Early Intervention Research Institute's Longitudinal Study on the effects of intervention for young children with disabilities. The model is estimated using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) relating the Battelle Developmental Inventory (BDI) scores to child, family, and early intervention variables. These relationships are also examined using a type of Sequential Method of Moments (SMM) estimation strategy that accounts for data and other problems such as endogeneity, censoring, and selectivity. …

Red Beet Ca2+-Dependent Protein Kinases And Their Role In Syringomycin Action, Yuka S. Suzuki May 1992

Red Beet Ca2+-Dependent Protein Kinases And Their Role In Syringomycin Action, Yuka S. Suzuki

Biology

The syringomycin stimulated protein phosphorylation of red beet plasma membranes was investigated. Rabbit antisera directed against N- and C-termini and the nucleotide binding site of the H+-ATPase detected the 100 kD polypeptide of this enzyme in the plasma membrane. Immunoprecipitation experiments revealed that the 100 kD polypeptide was phosphorylated, and syringomycin stimulated the phosphorylation in a Ca2+-dependent manner. Phosphoamino acids in the immunoprecipitates were phosphoserine and phosphothreonine. These findings are evidence that syringomycin stimulates the phosphorylation of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase. Okadaic acid, a phosphatase inhibitor, did not affect protein phosphorylation of syringomycin-treated and …

Desert Bighorn Sheep And Riverboat Interactions In Cataract Canyon, Utah, Mark C. Stanger May 1992

Desert Bighorn Sheep And Riverboat Interactions In Cataract Canyon, Utah, Mark C. Stanger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

I studied desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) behavior and habitat use in response to boating activities during 1985. The percent of total observed time in attention behavior before the boating season, during the boating season, and while riverboats were< 0.8 km from bighorn sheep groups was 1, 1.4, and 12.2, respectively. Estimated energy expenditure did not significantly differ for high riverboat pressures (2 > 0.2) or seasonal comparisons (2 > 0.1). Habitat use significantly differed for proximity to the river, which was probably related to the summer use of the river for drinking. Moderate, minor, and no responses to passing riverboats were observed 3, 39, and 58%, respectively. Responses to riverboats did not significantly differ according to time of day (2 > 0.15) or …

Soil Heterogeneity And Its Exploitation By Plants, Robert B. Jackson May 1992

Soil Heterogeneity And Its Exploitation By Plants, Robert B. Jackson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this dissertation I first examine the ability of individual plants in the field to garner localized soil nutrients. I then measure actual soil variability around perennial plants and use various statistics to quantify the scale and degree of that variability.

Soil patches on opposite sides of Pseudoroegneria spicata tussocks were treated with distilled water or a nutrient solution containing N, P, or K in three field experiments. When P was augmented in the enriched soil patches, rates of P uptake increased significantly for roots from enriched patches compared with roots in control patches. Rates of ammonium and potassium uptake …

Spatial And Temporal Variations Of The Pilot Valley Playa Interpreted From Remotely Sensed Images, Llyn Doremus May 1992

Spatial And Temporal Variations Of The Pilot Valley Playa Interpreted From Remotely Sensed Images, Llyn Doremus

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the Basin and Range Province, the geologic regime of the Pilot Valley, linear trending block faults have isolated many valleys both topographically and hydrologically. Discharge from these arid, closed basins occurs only as evaporation. Minerals dissolved in discharging fluid are precipitated at the valley floor as the liquid evaporates. The resulting salt flats and high density brines are known as playas.

The Pilot Valley Playa surface was sampled concurrently with the recording of a Thematic Mapper remotely sensed image to define the surface conditions that correspond to image data. An association was found between the band 7 (infrared wavelength …
