The Development Of An Electronic Newspaper At The Deseret News And A Survey Of Its Users, Marilyn L. Karras
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This thesis looks at the history of electronic newspaper delivery systems at several newspapers and provides an in-depth study of how one Utah daily newspaper, the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, developed its own electronic newspaper over a period of years and convinced its board of directors to support it. It outlines the process of defining goals, policies and processes for creating and managing the system. It contains results of a survey conducted of subscribers to the electronic edition, called Crossroads. The survey provides demographic profiles of Crossroads users, shows how often the electronic edition is used in their …
Evolution Of A Free Press In Taiwan: A Case Study, Chi Wang
Evolution Of A Free Press In Taiwan: A Case Study, Chi Wang
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In this case study, interviews with leaders of China Times and Central Daily, plus other mass media scholars and professionals, provide evidence that a free press in Taiwan evolved after a nearly four-decade old martial law was lifted in 1987. The interviews were based on the description of press philosophies by William A. Hachten (1981) to determine whether Taiwan's press has changed from developmental to Western. Secondly, based on early work of Schramm (1964) and Lerner (1958), economic prosperity and political pluralism were studied as keys to the government's relaxation of restrictions on the Taiwanese press. The finding of interviews …
Multimedia In Communication Education: A Survey Of Communication Educators, Michelle Hales
Multimedia In Communication Education: A Survey Of Communication Educators, Michelle Hales
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This project was an attempt to determine if and how educators are adapting their curriculum to reflect changes in technology. The survey revealed that the respondents, for the most part, are incorporating multimedia technologies into their curriculum. Results also showed an interesting pattern to that integration. This pattern involved two concepts of multimedia: 1) multimedia as a new form of communication (HTML, CD-ROMs, etc.), and 2) multimedia as a tool to enhance traditional forms of communication (broadcast news, print journalism, etc.). It was found that educators considered multimedia applications to enhance traditional forms of communication (i.e. image creation software, desktop/non-linear …
The Legal Environment For Landscape Architecture In Utah, Jeffrey J. Scarborough
The Legal Environment For Landscape Architecture In Utah, Jeffrey J. Scarborough
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This paper explores and delineates the legal environment for the practice of landscape architecture in Utah. The national, state, and local (city and county), codes that apply to landscape architecture and the related professions of architecture, engineering, and land surveying are documented, as is pertinent case law. Figures allow comparisons to be made between the various government levels to demonstrate contradictions and congruencies, as well as the clarity of the ordinances. Major findings include significant differences among the city and county regulations of landscape architecture and the related professions, and weaknesses in the state law for landscape architecture. Major recommendations …
Guidelines For Roadside Revegetation To Create Wildlife Habitat In Northern Utah, Lars D. Anderson
Guidelines For Roadside Revegetation To Create Wildlife Habitat In Northern Utah, Lars D. Anderson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Many species of wildlife use roadside vegetation as habitat. The ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) utilizes roadsides for all types of cover. Because pheasants are nonmigratory and generally live their entire lives within a 1- to 2-mile radius, pheasants are excellent indicator species to predict both quantity and quality of roadside wildlife habitat. Pheasants were introduced to Utah in the late 1800's. Populations climbed until pheasant habitat occupied 2-4 percent of the total land area in Utah. Populations began to decrease in the 1950's. Since 1962, pheasant populations in Cache County, Utah have dropped 2.71 percent annually. Experts believe …

Assessment Of Kokanee Salmon, Oncorhynchus Nerka, Genetic Stocks In Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Utah-Wyoming, Michael F. Canning
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
I investigated the relative abundance, spatial distributions, return to the creel, and growth rates of two genetic stocks of kokanee salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka, in Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Utah-Wyoming. The two genetic stocks consist of fish from the two major spawning populations of kokanee in the reservoir. One population, Shore Spawners, spawns along the eastern shoreline of the Open Hills area of the reservoir. The other population, Sheep Creek, spawns in Sheep Creek, a tributary located in the Canyon area of the reservoir.
Mitochondrial DNA of kokanee from each population was analyzed to determine haplotype differences between stocks. These haplotype …
A Conceptual Analysis Of The Appropriate Role Of Assistive Technology In The Education Of Students With Disabilities, Martell Menlove
A Conceptual Analysis Of The Appropriate Role Of Assistive Technology In The Education Of Students With Disabilities, Martell Menlove
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Assistive technology allows students with disabilities opportunities for greater independence, improved productivity, and increased functional capabilities. It removes obstacles, helps students overcome disabilities, and holds great promise for enriching educational outcomes and affecting the lives of students. However, for over 90% of special education students, assistive technology is not part of their education. One reason for not applying assistive technology to help students is the lack of a clear vision of what assistive technology is, what it can help students accomplish, and how to appropriately access it through individualized education programs (IEPs).
In this study a comprehensive concept analysis clarified …
A Study Of The Effects Of Body Image Education On Body Image In Adults Aged 60 And Older, Amy Peterson Hirtle
A Study Of The Effects Of Body Image Education On Body Image In Adults Aged 60 And Older, Amy Peterson Hirtle
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Body image has been addressed through weight loss, but little research has been done that addresses accepting one's body. Even less research has been done on the body image concerns of older adults. Adults over age 60 who live in Arizona and spend their summers in Logan, Utah, participated in a body image education at Utah State University. The Body Esteem Scale and the Inventory of Positive Psychological Attitudes were used to measure the effect of the course on the participants. Older adults on average scored as high or higher than did younger older adults on both measurements.
Body image …
A Survey Of Perceived Control And Domestic Environment Aspects Of Early Adolescent Boys With And Without Identified Externalizing Behavior Problems, Gary W. Mauk
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Two demographically congruous groups of early adolescent boys, one group with identified externalizing behavior problems (ESP) and one group enrolled in regular education (RED), were surveyed using anonymous self-report questionnaires that assessed academic, social, and general domains of perceived control and aspects of familial experiences. Data from EBP and RED boys' extant scholastic archival records were also collected. Also, using anonymous self-report questionnaires, the parents of EBP and RED boys were surveyed regarding their levels of satisfaction regarding aspects of parenting.
This study found that EBP boys had statistically significantly lower reading, math, and language achievement scores and grade point …
The Relationships Of Parental Marital Status, Quality Of Family Interaction And Gender To Adolescent Tobacco, Alcohol, And Marijuana Use, Stephen K. Hunsaker
The Relationships Of Parental Marital Status, Quality Of Family Interaction And Gender To Adolescent Tobacco, Alcohol, And Marijuana Use, Stephen K. Hunsaker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use of adolescents was examined to see if any differences existed in the marital status of the adolescent's parents, the quality of family interaction for the adolescent, and the gender of the adolescent. Marital status was defined as intact families where adolescents were living with both biological parents, and nonintact families where adolescents had parents who were single, divorced, widowed, never married, and remarried. Data were from a survey that examined youth issues of 500 adolescents from a rural Utah county. It was hypothesized that marital type and quality of family interaction (family kindness, family …
Fulfillment Of Marital Expectations In Relation To Communication Style And Parents' Marital Interactions, Shawn Corey Edgington
Fulfillment Of Marital Expectations In Relation To Communication Style And Parents' Marital Interactions, Shawn Corey Edgington
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of communication variables and parent marital variables with the fulfillment of marital expectations among newlyweds. Little research has been done on newlywed expectations and communication. This is an exploratory study conducted to determine how newlyweds' exposure to parents' marital interactions and communication styles correlated with newlyweds' fulfillment of marital expectations. Fifty newlywed couples (married 3-6 months) filled out the Marital Comparison Level Index (MCLI) questionnaire about their level of fulfillment of expectations. Couples were then videotaped talking to one another about the strengths of their marriage followed by a discussion …
Infant Physical Attractiveness, Affect, Temperament, And Gender In Relation To Tester Behavior, Andrea D. Hart
Infant Physical Attractiveness, Affect, Temperament, And Gender In Relation To Tester Behavior, Andrea D. Hart
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Easily observable infant characteristics have been shown to influence others; perceptions of infant competence. This study examined the relation between infant characteristics and a tester's willingness to repeat opportunities for the infant to pass items during administration of a cognitive test. Results showed that infant physical attractiveness was related to lower elicited infant performance (the ratio of items initially failed). Positive affect was related to higher test scores. Because first impressions are likely to contribute to future relationships, it may be important to educate adults who interact with infants about the effects of stereotyping infants based on first impressions.
The Relations Between Parenting Stress, Father Involvement, And Leisure, Among Fathers Of Preschool-Age Children, Patricia Mehl Brown
The Relations Between Parenting Stress, Father Involvement, And Leisure, Among Fathers Of Preschool-Age Children, Patricia Mehl Brown
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study examined relations between fathers' parenting stress, father involvement in child care giving, and family leisure activity among 46 fathers of preschool age children. Results indicate that the relations between parenting stress and father involvement depend on child gender. A negative association was found between parenting stress and father involvement in caregiving among fathers of boys but a positive association was found between these two variables among fathers of girls. furthermore, higher levels of family play are associated with lower levels of parenting stress among fathers of boys. Results also indicated a negative association between father involvement and mothers' …

Alteration In Basic Macrophage And Lymphocyte Cytokines From Benzene And Phenol In The Drinking Water Of Male Institute Of Cancer Research Mice, Jay C. Albretsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Groundwater contamination is a concern due to the large number of people that can become exposed to the contaminant. The chemicals benzene and phenol are known groundwater contaminants. The main health problem caused by benzene or phenol is bone marrow toxicity. Benzene and phenol are also immunotoxins reported to cause decreased thymic weights, altered lymphocyte mitogenic responses, and lower antibody production.
Cytokines are key signaling molecules produced by the cells of the immune system to activate other cells in the immune system, produce antibodies, and recruit other cells to sites of inflammation. The purpose of this study was to determine …
Development Of An Ovine Genome Map With Emphasis On In Situ Hybridization, Melanie R. Heaton
Development Of An Ovine Genome Map With Emphasis On In Situ Hybridization, Melanie R. Heaton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Livestock genome maps are used to identify economic trait loci and loci proximal to genes affecting economically important traits. This research contributes to the development of the ovine genome map by establishing techniques to physically map large DNA inserts to ovine chromosomes using fluorescent in situ hybridization. Fluorescent in situ hybridization techniques were established using yeast artificial chromosomes as DNA probes. Probes were as large as 1,000,000 kilobases and hybridized to fixed ovine metaphase chromosomes from a callipyge ewe. Three yeast artificial chromosome probes contained a genetic marker for the ovine callipyge gene. Probes were assigned to ovine chromosome pair …
Association Of The Major Histocompatibility Complex With Autism, Wayne W. Daniels
Association Of The Major Histocompatibility Complex With Autism, Wayne W. Daniels
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The pathogenesis of autism has proven difficult to characterize. However, in many recent studies, it is suggested that the onset of this disorder is the result of multiple etiological factors, which include genetic, immunologic, and viral elements.
Possible immunological influences found in subpopulations of patients with autism include decreased lymphocyte responsiveness, reduced natural killer cell activity, abnormal response to rubella vaccine, abnormal immune response to brain tissue, and decreased plasma levels of the fourth component of complement(C4). These aberrations and others imply a possible autoimmune mechanism in some cases for the development of autism.
C4 deficiencies have been found in …
An Interdisciplinary Theoretical Framework For The Mailed Questionnaire Process And The Development Of A Theory On Immediacy And Salience As Significant Variables Of Response Rates, Maribeth Christensen
An Interdisciplinary Theoretical Framework For The Mailed Questionnaire Process And The Development Of A Theory On Immediacy And Salience As Significant Variables Of Response Rates, Maribeth Christensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The mailed questionnaire research process developed historically as part of the survey research movement, with guidelines and models drawn from an array of scientific research methods and disciplines. Although the mailed questionnaire has become one of the most popular research instruments for obtaining data beyond the reach of the observer, the response bias generated from the generally low return rate of the mailed questionnaire survey has remained a problem. For over three decades researchers have generated a plethora of research on the effectiveness of the various aspects of the mailed questionnaire process and the resultant impact of various constructs on …
Aminostratigraphy Of Thatcher Basin, Se Idaho: Reassessment Of Pleistocene Lakes, Amy Hochberg
Aminostratigraphy Of Thatcher Basin, Se Idaho: Reassessment Of Pleistocene Lakes, Amy Hochberg
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Quaternary geologic history of Lake Thatcher, southeastern Idaho, is pivotal in determining when the Bear River carved its through-flowing channel into the Bonneville Basin. Bright's reconstruction of the history of Lake Thatcher was based on 14C dates that are now known to be inaccurate. Lava Creek B ash found interbedded with lacustrine sediment suggests that Thatcher Basin contained a lake well before Bright's original estimate of 34 ka.
D/L ratios, which measure the extent of racemization in fossil gastropods, in conjunction with paleosols and tephra, were used to correlate between four localities across Thatcher Basin to reassess lake-level …
A Study Of The Gradient Drift Instability In The High-Latitude Ionosphere Using The Utah State University Time Dependent Ionospheric Model, Mahesh Subramanium
A Study Of The Gradient Drift Instability In The High-Latitude Ionosphere Using The Utah State University Time Dependent Ionospheric Model, Mahesh Subramanium
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Research over the years has established that the Gradient Drift Instability process causes small-scale irregularities, mostly along the edges of the high-latitude polar cap patches. Studying these irregularities will help in the development of a Global Scale Ionospheric model, which is a central part of a global space weather forecast system. Much theoretical work has been done with varying degrees of complexity to study this instability in the high latitude patches.
In this work we have used the Utah State University Time Dependent Ionospheric Model to model the high-latitude patches, calculate the growth rate of the instability, and perform a …

Accessing Nuclear Structure For Field Emission, In Lens, Scanning Electron Microscopy (Feisem), T. D. Allen, G. R. Bennion, S. A. Rutherford, S. Reipert, A. Ramalho, E. Kiseleva, M. W. Goldberg
Scanning Microscopy
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has had a shorter time course in biology than conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) but has nevertheless produced a wealth of images that have significantly complemented our perception of biological structure and function from TEM information. By its nature, SEM is a surface imaging technology, and its impact at the subcellular level has been restricted by the considerably reduced resolution in conventional SEM in comparison to TEM. This restriction has been removed by the recent advent of high-brightness sources used in lensfield emission instruments (FEISEM) which have produced resolution of around 1 nanometre, which is not …

ISTEA significantly changed the law governing metropolitan transportation planning. In response to the changes introduced by ISTEA, FHWA and FTA issued revised planning regulations on October 28, 1993, setting new requirements for the transportation planning processes. The requirements are presented in 23 CFR Part 450 and 49 CFR Part 613, Statewide and Metropolitan Planning Final Rule. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA) also imposed rigorous new transportation planning requirements in metropolitan areas, particularly those that are designated nonattainment or maintenance areas for air quality. In support of the implementation of the revised regulations, FHW A and FTA jointly …
Chemical Wave Propagation In Hele-Shaw Cells And Porous Media, D. A. Vasquez, J. W. Wilder, Boyd F. Edwards
Chemical Wave Propagation In Hele-Shaw Cells And Porous Media, D. A. Vasquez, J. W. Wilder, Boyd F. Edwards
All Physics Faculty Publications
Chemical waves induce density gradients in fluids which may lead to convection. This paper studies the convective effects on chemical waves propagating in porous media or in fluids confined between two parallel vertical walls. Chemical waves in the iodate–arsenous acid system are modeled with a one variable reaction‐diffusion equation. The fluid flow is modeled using Darcy’s law. A linear stability analysis on convectionless fronts shows a transition to convection. The full nonlinear equations describing the convective front are solved numerically on a vertical slab. Convective fronts propagate faster than convectionless fronts. Near the onset of convection, the fronts are raised …
Potential Sputtering Of Protons With Slow Multiply Charged Ions, Yasunori Yamazaki, Nobukazu Kakutani
Potential Sputtering Of Protons With Slow Multiply Charged Ions, Yasunori Yamazaki, Nobukazu Kakutani
Scanning Microscopy
Experimental findings of insulator sputtering with slow multiply charged ions are reviewed with particular emphasis on proton sputtering, including recent studies which pay attention not only to the yields, but also to the energy distributions of sputtered particles. A simplified scenario of multiply charged ion interaction with a solid surface is discussed, which consists of two stages, i.e., resonant charge transfers well above the surface (the stage I), and a violent collision with the surface transferring a major part of the potential energy (the stage II). A couple of processes relating to the sputtering in the stages I and II …
Numerical Simulation Of The Influence Of Electron Beam Induced Excess Charge Carriers On Potential And Charge Carrier Density Distributions In Gaas Mesfet, K. Kaufmann, L. J. Balk
Numerical Simulation Of The Influence Of Electron Beam Induced Excess Charge Carriers On Potential And Charge Carrier Density Distributions In Gaas Mesfet, K. Kaufmann, L. J. Balk
Scanning Microscopy
Such scanning electron microscopy modes as electron beam induced current (EBIC), cathodoluminescence (CL) and scanning electron acoustic microscopy (SEAM) are widely used for the characterization of semiconductor specimens and devices. These methods are based on the generation of excess charge carriers by an electron beam inside of the investigated specimen. Usually, theoretical models used to explain the physics of these methods presuppose the low injection case.
However, in experimental investigations, the low injection condition cannot always be observed. Thus, for the interpretation of such measurement results more complicated simulation models have to be used. Such simulations can be carried out …
The Role Of Defects In Semiconductor Materials And Devices, D. B. Holt
The Role Of Defects In Semiconductor Materials And Devices, D. B. Holt
Scanning Microscopy
This literature review leads to the conclusion that recently the basis for an understanding of the electrical and optical properties of structural defects in semiconductors, especially in silicon, has begun to emerge. This is due largely to the ability of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) electron beam induced current (EBIC) and cathodoluminescence (CL) to determine the properties of single, well-defined defects in "state of the art" material. However, there are still major differences concerning the physical models to be used to explain different forms of dislocation EBIC contrast variation with temperature and beam current. Basic ideas in this field are emphasized. …
A Novel Method For Viewing Heavy Metal Stained And Embedded Biological Tissue By Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, R. Geoffrey Richards, Iolo Ap Gwynn
A Novel Method For Viewing Heavy Metal Stained And Embedded Biological Tissue By Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, R. Geoffrey Richards, Iolo Ap Gwynn
Scanning Microscopy
Backscattered electron (BSE) imaging was used to display heavy metal stained biological structures of various embedded specimens. Samples were fixed, stained and embedded in resin blocks as with preparation for the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Blocks were trimmed to center the specimens in a trapezoidal face of up to 5 mm2 and their sides painted with conductive silver paint leaving the face uncovered. Blocks were sputter coated with 6-8 nm of silver, chromium or aluminum, with aluminum providing the best specimen contrast in BSE mode. Samples were examined in a field emission scanning electron microscope operated at a high …
Laboratory Growth Systems In Biofilm Research, Julian W. T. Wimpenny
Laboratory Growth Systems In Biofilm Research, Julian W. T. Wimpenny
Cells and Materials
The huge variety of ecosystems that we collectively refer to as "biofilm" is reflected by the numerous different systems available to grow them in the laboratory. The relationship between in situ systems, microcosms and laboratory models is defined and discussed. The first two represent holistic approaches designed to assess the structure and function of particular biofilms: the last is analytical and reductionist, aiming to isolate specific functions of biofilms in order to understand properties that can apply to biofilm in general. Properties of a model can be completely understood whilst this is unlikely with natural ecosystems because of the possibility …
Gap Junctional Intercellular Communication In Bone, Henry J. Donahue, Monique A. Vander Molen, Clare E. Yellowley, Zhongyong Li
Gap Junctional Intercellular Communication In Bone, Henry J. Donahue, Monique A. Vander Molen, Clare E. Yellowley, Zhongyong Li
Cells and Materials
Gap junctional intercellular communication has been demonstrated in bone cells and may contribute to the mechanism by which osteoblasts integrate and amplify extracellular signals, both chemical (hormonal) and biophysical (electrical and mechanical). Connexin 43 (Cx43) is the predominant gap junction protein expressed by bone cells. Experiments with osteoblastic cells in which Cx43 expression was diminished by antisense transfection demonstrate that cell-to-cell coupling in osteoblastic ROS 17/2.8 cells is via gap junctions composed of Cx43. Cellular networks of these coupling deficient clones are dramatically less responsive to parathyroid hormone (PTH) suggesting that coupling contributes to hormonal responsiveness. Furthermore, PTH per se …
