Biological Studies Of The Parasites And Predators Of The Alfalfa Weevil With Particular Reference To The Effects Of Selected Insecticides, Robert R. Perkes May 1966

Biological Studies Of The Parasites And Predators Of The Alfalfa Weevil With Particular Reference To The Effects Of Selected Insecticides, Robert R. Perkes

Biology

The alfalfa weevil Hypera postica (Gyllenhal) was first observed in the United States in 1904 on a farm in Salt Lake City, Utah (Titus, 1907). Since that time, it has spread to 40 of the states in the Union and two provinces of Canada (USDA Leaflet 368, 1965). The alfalfa weevil is recognized as the most serious pest of alfalfa in this country, and for many years has caused millions of dollars of damage to the alfalfa industry in America (Sorensen, 1934). Since the introduction of the alfalfa weevil into Utah, various methods of control have been employed to stop …

Host-Parasite Relationships Between Prunus Mahaleb And The Parasitic Nematodes Pratylenchus Neglectus And Meloidogyne Hapla, Bernard Al Tait May 1965

Host-Parasite Relationships Between Prunus Mahaleb And The Parasitic Nematodes Pratylenchus Neglectus And Meloidogyne Hapla, Bernard Al Tait

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Utah orchardists have encountered problems which they have needed to control for continued successful and economical fruit production. Some of these problems are diseases such as western-X virus, cytospora canker (Wadley, 1955) and codling moth (Davis, 1957). These diseases, because of their nature and severity, have received more attention than others.

Biological Studies Of Three Species Of Cuterebra (Diptera: Cuterebridae) From Northern Utah, Charles L. Graham May 1964

Biological Studies Of Three Species Of Cuterebra (Diptera: Cuterebridae) From Northern Utah, Charles L. Graham

Biology

Flies of the genus Cuterebra are found in the New World only. They are parasitic bots of rodents and lagomorphs as larvae and have been studied for about one and one-half centuries. During this time very little has been found out about the biology of most of the species, even hosts are still unknown for many of them.

Bioassay Studies With Ddt On Utah Populations Of Codling Moth, Morteza Esmaili May 1963

Bioassay Studies With Ddt On Utah Populations Of Codling Moth, Morteza Esmaili

Biology

The codling moth is known as one of the important persts of apple, pear, quince, walnut and several other fruits. It occurs wherever these fruits are grown and it is a serious limiting factor in all apple growing areas. The injury is caused by the larva which tunnels into the fruit, lowering its commercial value and making the fruit susceptible to infections from fungi and bacteria.

Bulletin No. 370 - The Superb Plant Bug, Adelphocoris Superbus (Uhler): Its Life History And Its Relation To Seed Development In Alfalfa, Charles J. Sorenson, Lowell Cutler

UAES Bulletins

Infestations of the superb plant bug, Adelphocoris superbus (Uhler), in Utah alfalfa fields first came to the attention of entomologists of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station during their investigations of the seed chalcid and lygus bug problems of alfalfa seed production in the Uinta Basin from 1926 to 1934. Because of its occurrence in considerable numbers, particularly in first crop alfalfa fields with thin stands, the superb plant bug was suspected of interfering with seed development. Consequently an investigation of the activities of this insect was begun in the summer of 1932 and continued through that of 1933.

A Survey Of Plant Parasitic And Associated Species Of Nematodes In The Carrot Producing Area Of Cedar Valley, Iron County, Utah, Paul R. Fitzgerald May 1950

A Survey Of Plant Parasitic And Associated Species Of Nematodes In The Carrot Producing Area Of Cedar Valley, Iron County, Utah, Paul R. Fitzgerald

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Plant parasitic nematodes have long been known to cause extensive crop losses through reduced yields, shortened productive life, or lowered value of produce. The rood knot nematode, Heterodera marioni, is cosmopolitan. It destroys crops and causes economic losses equal to those of any other plant parasitic species. in 1948 this nematode caused an estimated loss to the carrot raising industry in Iron County, Utah of approximately $15,000. No estimates for the years prior to 1948 are available; however, reports of the county agent (14) for Iron County show that carrot production in the Cedar Valley is decreasing, and is …

Nutritional Status Of Some Utah Population Groups, Almeda Perry Brown Apr 1944

Nutritional Status Of Some Utah Population Groups, Almeda Perry Brown

Faculty Honor Lectures

The science of nutrition is the science of life. Though man is still ignorant of the true nature of that elusive force we call life, he has learned by means of the discovered laws of nutrition how to preserve and prolong life as well as how to add to the satisfactions of living.

The emergence of the sicence of nutrition from the maze of superstition which for centuries clouded man's thinking is a fascinating story. A story, however, that arouses a feeling of regret that for so long a time man was willing to attribute to supernatural forces all phenomena …
