Mathematical Programming Applications In Agroforestry Planning, Laurence H. Reeves
Mathematical Programming Applications In Agroforestry Planning, Laurence H. Reeves
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Agroforestry as a sustainable production system has been recognized as a land use system with the potential to slow encroachment of agriculture onto forested lands in developing countries. However, the acceptance of nontraditional agroforestry systems has been hampered in some areas due to the risk-averse nature of rural agriculturalists. By explicitly recognizing risk in agroforestry planning, a wider acceptance of agroforestry is possible. This thesis consists of a collection of three papers that explore the potential of modern stock portfolio theory to reduce financial risk in agroforestry planning.
The first paper presents a theoretical framework that incorporates modern stock portfolio …
Winter Habitat Selection Of Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki) In A Large Regulated River, Ronald A. Englund
Winter Habitat Selection Of Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarki) In A Large Regulated River, Ronald A. Englund
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Microhabitat use by cutthroat trout and macrohabitat use by both cutthroat and rainbow trout were studied i n the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam during the winters of 1988 and 1989. Microhabitat parameters used by cutthroat trout, such as focal velocity, depth, and fish elevation, differed significantly in eddies, runs, and riffles. Mean focal velocities in runs were 0.79 body lengths/seconds (bl/s), in riffles 0.66 bl/s, and in eddies 0.24 bl/s. Cutthroat trout size also varied significantly with macrohabitat; larger fish were found in riffles.
Macrohabitat use by cutthroat trout and rainbow trout differed significantly among species, macrohabitat types, …
Is Rainbow Trout Condition Influenced By Invertebrate-Drift Density?, Randall B. Filbert
Is Rainbow Trout Condition Influenced By Invertebrate-Drift Density?, Randall B. Filbert
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Users of the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology CTFIM) commonly assume that there is a positive linear relationship between available habitat (WUA) and stream fish biomass. However, several studies have shown a lack cf correlation between WUA and biomass. Such poor relationships may occur if other factors limit fish abundance. Food availability is a potentially important factor limiting abundance of stream fishes and can affect blomass by influencing fish condition (individual weight). I collected rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) exposed to different levels of invertebrate-drift density to determine if condition was greater where food was more abundant. I also examined …
Effects Of Selected Insects On Seed Production Of Hycrest Crested Wheatgrass, Ali Yusuf Issa
Effects Of Selected Insects On Seed Production Of Hycrest Crested Wheatgrass, Ali Yusuf Issa
Biology
Studies were conducted to explore the relationship of common insect pests associated with the cultivar 'Hycrest' crested wheatgrass, Agropyron cristatum (L.) and A. desertorum (Fisher x Link). Insect population surveys were conducted on three farms during three summers to determine relative insect numbers. Thrips, Trigonotylus ruficornis, and Lygus hesperus were found to be the most abundant insect pests infesting Hycrest plants. A broad population peak was observed covering most of July through August for thrips, T. ruficornis, and L. hesperus. In addition to pest insects, the following beneficial insects were collected in significant numbers: Nabidae, Coccinellidae, Collops …

Effects Of Alternative Sprinkler Irrigation Parameters On Pesticide Movement, Ahmad Yar Ranjha, Richard C. Peralta, Robert W. Hill, Antonio Maria Requena, Howard M. Deer, Majid Ehteshami
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
The relative reduction in potential ground-water contamination due to pesticides at several sites in Utah was determined by comparing alternative irrigation system designs, water management practices and pesticides. Alternative sprinkler irrigation distribution coefficients were used to estimate infiltration depths. The movement of pesticides through soils following sprinkler irrigations was simulated with one-dimensional model. Pesticide contamination of ground water can be reduced by careful selection of pesticides, properly designed irrigation systems and improved water management techniques. Procedures for selecting an appropriate sprinkler design and pesticide are presented.
Meat Effects On Nonheme Iron Absorption, Yunji Kim
Meat Effects On Nonheme Iron Absorption, Yunji Kim
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Studies were undertaken to investigate if gastric acidity and iron chelation to a meat component enhance nonheme iron absorption. Cereal meals, with and without added proteins, were gavaged into iron-deficient rats. The role of iron chelation was investigated by adding sodium phytate, an iron chelator implicated with decreased iron absorption, to the meals. The role of gastric acidity was investigated by treating the rats with cimetidine, which inhibits gastric acid production. In rats with normal acid production, beef, pork and chicken enhanced iron absorption when phytate had been added to the meals, suggesting a role for chelation in meat enhancement …
Determining The Validity Of Methods Used In Meat Iron Analysis, Padmashri Ummadi
Determining The Validity Of Methods Used In Meat Iron Analysis, Padmashri Ummadi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The validity of the Homsey method for heme iron, modified Schricker and sodium pyrophosphate extraction methods for nonheme iron and atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and ferrozine methods for total iron were determined using spikes of hemoglobin, ground beef baked to different degrees of doneness, proportional beef liver:catfish mixtures and National Institute of Science and Technology reference materials.
The mean spike recoveries of 0.01g and 0.02g Hb in raw beef and raw chicken samples were 96.7% of the heme iron for the Homsey method, 97.9% of the total iron for the ferrozine method, and 85.7% of the total iron for the …
Changes In The Vulvular And Vestibular Tissue Of The Bovine During The Estrous Cycle As Determined By The Use Of Near Infrared Interactance, Robert Alan Kunzler
Changes In The Vulvular And Vestibular Tissue Of The Bovine During The Estrous Cycle As Determined By The Use Of Near Infrared Interactance, Robert Alan Kunzler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy is routinely used for the analysis of quality components of feedstuffs. Near infrared spectrophotometers, coupled with a fiber optic probe, could enable direct measurements of the live animal. This study was conducted to characterize changes in the vulva and vestibule during the bovine estrous cycle using near infrared (NI) spectroscopy. Sixteen cycling Holstein cows were observed for estrus twice daily from 40 days postpartum for three estrous cycles or until conception was verified. In addition, weekly rectal palpations, cowside milk progesterone tests, and tailhead chalk were used to aid in estrous detection. Near infrared spectra of …
An Ecological Test Of The Tragedy Of The Commons On Communal Rangeland In The Moroccan Western High Atlas, Lloyd Mendes
An Ecological Test Of The Tragedy Of The Commons On Communal Rangeland In The Moroccan Western High Atlas, Lloyd Mendes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
I empirically tested an hypothesis derived from a popularized version of Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons" paradigm. Some range-development authors predict overgrazing and ecological abuse on all traditional communal rangelands. I estimated forage production, consumption, and season of use on one traditional agdal or intertribal common in the Moroccan Western High Atlas Mountains. Results from 1984-85 do not support the overgrazing predicted by "tragedy" proponents. I argue that the lack of overgrazing is not coincidental but is due to the traditional communal mechanism of controlling season of use.

The Hepatic Microcirculation In Experimental Cirrhosis A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study Of Microcorrosion Casts, E. Gaudio, L. Pannarale, M. Ripani, P. Onori, O. Riggio
Scanning Microscopy
The experimental model of liver cirrhosis induced by intragastric administration of CCl4 reproduces not only the histological picture of the postnecrotic cirrhosis but also its pathophysiological features.
Corrosion casts of livers affected by CCl4-induced cirrhosis show the loss of the lobular pattern. Once the cirrhosis has completely developed, the whole microvascular bed appears to be composed of groups of sinusoid nodules of diameters varying between 0.3 and 1.5 mm.. Pre- and post-sinusoidal vessels and anastomoses between the former and the latter are mainly located at the perinodular spaces.
This microvascular situation modifies the normal perfusion gradient within …
Retinal Changes In A Mutant Form Of Goldfish With Megalophthalmia, David T. Yew, Winnie W. Y. Li, C. Au, H. L. Choi, Q. D. Yang, Patrick K. H. Chan
Retinal Changes In A Mutant Form Of Goldfish With Megalophthalmia, David T. Yew, Winnie W. Y. Li, C. Au, H. L. Choi, Q. D. Yang, Patrick K. H. Chan
Scanning Microscopy
The retinal changes of a mutant strain of goldfish with megalophthalmia were studied by histology, electron microscopy and biochemistry. Changes in the morphology of the pigment epithelium, decrease in number of photoreceptors, thinning out of retinal layers and the existence of spaces in the retina were all features as the eyes grew in size. Invasion of macrophages was also evident in the retina. A decrease in leucine uptake per milligram of retina was also detected as the eye grew beyond 0.8 millilitre in volume. These changes, although related to volume changes (i.e., growth) of the eyes, were found to have …

Ultrastructure Of Coronary Arterial Endothelium In Atherosclerotic Swine Suggests Lipid Retro-Endocytosis, Keith A. Robinson, Robert P. Apkarian
Ultrastructure Of Coronary Arterial Endothelium In Atherosclerotic Swine Suggests Lipid Retro-Endocytosis, Keith A. Robinson, Robert P. Apkarian
Scanning Microscopy
During experimental atherosclerosis, arterial endothelial cells show characteristic ultrastructural changes including the appearance of increased numbers of plasmalemmal and cytoplasmic vesicles. These structures have been shown by tracer studies to participate in the transcellular transport of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and β-very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol from the arterial lumen into the abluminal extracellular matrix. Although this probably represents the major lipid transport pathway, other forms of transport may exist. We document the presence of apparent lipid structures averaging approximately 300 nm in diameter at or near the luminal surface of coronary arterial endothelium of atherosclerotic miniature swine. The structures exhibited a particulate …

Ted Hall And The Science Of Biological Microprobe X-Ray Analysis: A Historical Perspective Of Methodology And Biological Dividends, Brij L. Gupta
Scanning Microscopy
This review surveys the emergence of electron probe X-ray microanalysis as a quantitative method for measuring the chemical elements in situ. The extension of the method to the biological sciences under the influence of Ted Hall is reviewed. Some classical experiments by Hall and his colleagues in Cambridge, UK, previously unpublished, are described; as are some of the earliest quantitative results from the cryo-sections obtained in Cambridge and elsewhere. The progress of the methodology is critically evaluated from the earliest starts to the present state of the art. Particular attention has been focused on the application of the method in …
Three-Dimensional Morphological Analysis Of Nerve Cells By Scanning Electron Microscopy. A Review, O. J. Castejón
Three-Dimensional Morphological Analysis Of Nerve Cells By Scanning Electron Microscopy. A Review, O. J. Castejón
Scanning Microscopy
The present review provides a rational and new approach to study the three-dimensional morphology of nerve cells in situ at both cellular and macromolecular levels, by means of conventional (SEM) and high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM). The slicing and ethanol-cryofracturing methods, the freeze-fracture SEM method and tissue preparation for HRSEM have been described. Nerve cell outer surface, axon hillock and initial axon segment, axonal collateral ramifications and dendritic processes were visualized either by the slicing technique or the cryofracture method displaying neuronal geometry in situ. The cleavage plane occurred at the satellite neuroglial sheath exposing somatic hidden surfaces of …

Three-Dimensional Morphology Of Cerebellar Protoplasmic Islands And Proteoglycan Content Of Mossy Fiber Glomerulus: A Scanning And Transmission Electron Microscope Study, O. J. Castejón, H. V. Castejón
Scanning Microscopy
The present review summarizes the outer and inner surface features of mossy fiber glomeruli in vertebrate cerebellar granular layer as seen by conventional scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and SEM freeze-fracture method. The intracortical trajectory of mossy fibers and their synaptic contacts with granule cell dendrites were traced by the slicing and freeze-fracture techniques revealing the radial distribution of granule cell dendrites around the central mossy rosette. The "en passant" nature of mossy fiber synaptic contacts and the participation of Golgi cell axonal ramifications were demonstrated. The results obtained were compared with available light and transmission electron microscopy data. The freeze-etching …

Alpha-Particle Irradiation-Induced Change In Bronchopulmonary Macrophage Morphology, In Vitro, T. M. Seed, G. K. Niiro
Scanning Microscopy
Bronchopulmonary macrophages, isolated from canine lungs by saline lavage and grown in tissue culture for short periods, were acutely irradiated with a range of doses of either Americium-241 alpha particles (0.03-48 Gy) or 250 keV x-rays (0.5-24 Gy). Following a 24-hour reincubation and "expression" period, cells were examined for radiation-induced changes in overall viability, as well as in cell morphology and ultrastructure. Results indicated that neither quality of radiation had much effect on cell viability over dose ranges examined, but substantial changes in cell volume, surface topography, and cytoplasmic features were noted, especially in the alpha-particle-irradiated specimens. Results support the …

A Scanning Electron Microscopic Morphological And Semi-Quantitative Evaluation Of Rat Stomach Treated With Colloidal Bismuth Subcitrate And Alcohol, C. Winters, S. M. Hinsull, Z. Gregory
Scanning Microscopy
Scanning electron microscopy was utilised to study the effect of absolute alcohol on the normal morphology of the rat stomach, together with the gastroprotective actions of colloidal bismuth subcitrate. Studies on normal gastric morphology revealed that the major portion of the stomach was covered by a protective coating of mucus. However, there was considerable variation in the integrity of the mucosal surface of the control animals, with the loss of surface epithelial cells in some regions which may account for the variation in response to necrotising agents. The long-term administration of the gastrocytoprotective agent colloidal bismuth subcitrate resulted in a …

The Response Of The Tracheal Epithelium To Concomitant Cis-Diamminedichloroplatinum (Ii) And Radiation. An Electron Microscopic Study In Rabbits, C. H. Håkansson, M. Albertsson, M. Palmegren, J. Ranstam
Scanning Microscopy
The ciliated epithelium of the rabbit trachea was irradiated with daily fractions of 2 Gy up to an accumulated dose of 20 Gy (total dose: 2, 6, 10, 16, or 20 Gy). Fifteen to forty-five minutes before the start of each irradiation 0.3 mg Cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (cis-DDP) was given by intraperitoneal injection to each rabbit. Examinations were carried out 1-10 days after each fractionation schedule, when specimens were taken for morphological investigations.
Scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination showed a gradual development of ciliary damage, from blebs on the cilia to swollen tips, broken and bent cilia and finally an epithelial injury …
Timed Acid Bath Effects On Kidney Podocytes Prepared For Scanning Electron Microscopy, B. J. Moore, K. R. Holmes
Timed Acid Bath Effects On Kidney Podocytes Prepared For Scanning Electron Microscopy, B. J. Moore, K. R. Holmes
Scanning Microscopy
In perfusion fixation of dog kidney glomeruli, observation of tear fractured surfaces by scanning electron microscopy reveals the deposition of "debris" on the surface of glomerular visceral epithelium (podocytes) that is not deposited on other kidney tissue surfaces. It is of concern to remove this debris without damage to tissue surfaces. A 5 minute bath in 8N HCI (hydrochloric acid) following postfixation in 1% OsO4 (osmium tetroxide) removes only some of the debris. A 10 minute acid bath removes this debris without visible damage to podocyte surface structures such as cilia, plicae or blebs. A 20 minute acid bath …

Transplacental Cardiotoxicity Of Cocaine: Atrial Damage Following Treatment In Early Pregnancy, Jacques Gilloteaux, John P. Dalbec
Scanning Microscopy
Using light, transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy, cocaine-induced defects were observed in hamster atria. Compared with controls, the treated atria from neonates show endocardial and myocardial damages as the atrial walls thicken. SEM micrographs show intensive blebbing, damage and incomplete coverage of myocardium by the endocardial endothelium. TEM data demonstrate blebs, thinning, and other endothelial cell injuries and complement the SEM findings. Areas of endothelial sloughing may facilitate the formation of luminal and mural thrombi as noticed in many neonatal atria. Adjacent subendocardial myocardial cells display contraction bands, swellings, and vacuolizations. Local and large areas of damaged myocardial …

Effects Of Low Energy Beta-Irradiation From Tritiated Water On The Morphology Of 3t3 Fibroblasts, Z. Somosy, Tamara Kubasova, J. Kovács, G. J. Köteles
Scanning Microscopy
Cellular alterations of cultured 3T3 cells irradiated with beta-rays from tritiated water were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. We observed decreased negative surface charges, vacuolization of rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi-complex, degeneration of mitochondria, increase of lysosomal activity and changes in distribution and amount of microfilaments in the irradiated cells, that parallelled changes in cell shape.

Peripheral Nerve Bridges For Central Nervous System Regeneration, Silvio Varon, Theo Hagg, H. Lee Vahlsing, Marston Manthorpe
Cells and Materials
A neuronotrophic hypothesis for the adult central nervous system (CNS) has been increasingly supported by in vivo studies of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) impacts on adult rat CNS cholinergic neurons. We have extended these investigations to NGF effects on cholinergic axonal regeneration in an adult rat septo-hippocampal model. A fimbriafornix lesion deprives the dorsal hippocampal formation (HF) of its cholinergic afferents and provides a cavity into which sciatic nerve segments can be implanted to serve as regeneration bridges from septum to HF. Septa! cholinergic fibers enter and course through fresh cell-containing nerve bridges to attain a maximal number by the …

Analysis Of Protein Adsorption On Retrieved Human Vascular Grafts Using Immunogold Labelling With Silver Enhancement, N. P. Ziats, N. S. Topham, D. A. Pankowsky, J. M. Anderson
Cells and Materials
The adsorption of proteins on biomedical materials such as vascular grafts is important in modulating thrombosis, one eventual cause of vascular graft failure. We have identified proteins expressed on the surfaces of retrieved vascular grafts to determine if certain proteins were present at the end stage of vascular failure. Scanning electron microscopic analysis of protein adsorption on the surfaces of retrieved vascular prostheses was determined using antibodies to human blood proteins fibrinogen, fibronectin, Hageman factor (factor XII) and factor VIII/von Willebrand Factor. The detection of these proteins on the blood contacting surface was evaluated by immunogold labelling with protein A-gold …

Cells and Materials
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDS) have been used to quantify calcium deposition in bioprosthetic valves. To further characterize the calcification process as it pertains to allograft valve tissue, two models of tissue valve implantation were used. The first model used subcutaneous implantation of glutaraldehyde-preserved allogeneic aortic and pulmonary valve leaflets. The second model used syngeneic or allogeneic fresh aortic valve grafts implanted heterotopically into the abdominal aorta of recipient rats. Reference light microscopy was used to select sections for SEM and EDS. In the subcutaneous model, calcium content in both the pulmonary and aortic valves …
