Fpga Based Attitude Control System Architecture For Increased Performance, Georg Grillmayer, Marc Hirth, Felix Huber, Viola Wolter

Small Satellite Conference

For micro-satellites the required attitude accuracy, agility and autonomy along with desired parallel processing of payload images in real-time needs to be achieved within limited power and computational resources. Providing fast, parallel execution while still small in hardware size and modest in power consumption field programmable gate array (FPGA) based on-board computers (OBC) have the potential to highly increase system performance. The Flying Laptop is a micro-satellite currently under development at the Institute of Space Systems, Universität Stuttgart. The attitude control system together with the on-board navigation system is implemented as hardware in an FPGA. The architecture including the sensors, …

Determination Of Particle (Pm10 And Pm2.5) And Gas-Phase Ammonia (Nh3) Emissions From A Deep-Pit Swine Operation Using Arrayed Field Measurements And Inverse Gaussian Plume Modeling, Randal S. Martin, Vishal Doshi, Kori Moore Jun 2006

Determination Of Particle (Pm10 And Pm2.5) And Gas-Phase Ammonia (Nh3) Emissions From A Deep-Pit Swine Operation Using Arrayed Field Measurements And Inverse Gaussian Plume Modeling, Randal S. Martin, Vishal Doshi, Kori Moore

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

The contribution of agricultural emissions of primary (direct) and secondary (precursor) pollutants to air quality is rapidly being recognized as an important fraction of local and regional air pollution budgets. However, a significant uncertainty still exists in the magnitude and rate of these types of emissions, especially under “in field” conditions common within the central and western United States. Described herein are the results of a study conducted at a deep-pit swine production facility in central Iowa. The facility consisted of three separate, parallel barns, each housing around 1,250 pigs with an average weight of approximately 90 pounds per animal. …

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Agricultural operations produce a variety of particulates and gases that influence air quality. Agriculture, through wind erosion, tillage and harvest operations, burning, diesel-powered machinery and animal production operations, is a source of particulate matter that can enter human lungs and cause pulmonary problems. Animal production operations can be a source of gaseous emissions such as ammonia, odor-causing volatile organic compounds, hydrogen sulfide, greenhouse gases (methane, nitrous oxides) and airborne pathogens. These emissions can negatively impact human health, property values, and the environment. The presence of buildings and other structures often make whole facility measurement capability a requirement for understanding the …

Integrating Lidar And Atmospheric Boundary Layer Measurements To Determine Fluxes And Dynamics Of Particulate Emissions From An Agriculture Facility, Lawrence Hipps, John H. Integrating Lidar And Atmospheric Boundary Layer Measurements To Determine Fluxes And Dynamics Of Particulate Emissions From An Agriculture Facility, Lawrence Hipps, John H. Prueger, Jerry Hatfield, Gail E. Bingham, W. Eichinger, Thomas D. Wilkerson, Vladimir V. Zavyalov, Randy Martin, Phil Silva

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Lidar technology offers the ability to quantify concentrations of small particulates in the atmosphere in certain ranges of time and space. While this is a valuable tool to visualize the behavior of plumes emitted from the surface, the actual flux of particles cannot be estimated from such data alone. To determine the mass flux of particles, the concentrations must be properly integrated with wind and turbulence properties. The goal of this study is to utilize a model that uses wind and particle density information to calculate the flux of particles from an animal facility near Ames, Iowa. The model is …

Agricultural facilities are the source of many types of particles and gases that can exhibit an influence on air quality. Emissions potentially impacting air quality from agricultural sources have become a concern for regulatory agencies such as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Particle mass concentration influences from agricultural sources can include both primary particles (direct emissions such as dust) and secondary particles (formed from gaseous precursors such as ammonia).

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Lidar (LIght Detection And Ranging) provides the means to quantitatively evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of particulate emissions from agricultural activities, including animal feeding operations. A three-wavelength portable scanning Lidar system built at the Space Dynamic Laboratory (SDL) is used to extract optical properties of the particulate matter from the return Lidar signal and to convert these optical properties to physical parameters including the spatial distribution of particulate concentration around the agricultural facility and its temporal variations. The inversion algorithm developed to retrieve physical parameters of the particulate matter takes advantage of measurements taken simultaneously at three different wavelengths …

Physiologic Response To Microgravity, Benjamin Randall, Dwayne Westenskow May 2006

Physiologic Response To Microgravity, Benjamin Randall, Dwayne Westenskow

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Physiology in microgravity is a challenging field of research because of limited resources. Though humans have been in space for 50 years most meaningful data has been collected only within the last 15 years. While expensive studies with small sample sizes make obtaining and interpreting data difficult, some general conclusions about the human physiological response to microgravity can be drawn. A redistribution of bodily fluids is believed to initiate change in cardiovascular and respiratory function. The mechanisms for these changes have been studied very little are not well understood. Long term effects of microgravity on the body have been impossible …

On The Geomorphology, Hydrology, And Biogeochemistry Of Stream-Lake Interactions In The Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho, Usa, Christopher D. Arp May 2006

On The Geomorphology, Hydrology, And Biogeochemistry Of Stream-Lake Interactions In The Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho, Usa, Christopher D. Arp

Biology

This dissertation focuses on the geomorphology, hydrology, and biogeochemistry of streams and lakes as coupled, interacting ecosystems in the Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho, USA. The study design used intensive field studies of several ecosystems nested within a broader comparative study of many ecosystems. Stream geomorphology was affected by lakes due to the glacial legacy of lakes and subsequent modification of water and sediment flux. Hydrologically, streams below lakes had more frequent and longer duration floods, and lakes were shown to attenuate summer floods, but not spring snowmelt floods. Biogeochemically, nutrient uptake among streams showed high phosphate and low nitrate uptake downstream …

Mycobacterium-Plant Interactions In Bioremediation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Compounds, Robert D. Child May 2006

Mycobacterium-Plant Interactions In Bioremediation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Compounds, Robert D. Child

Biology

Five mycobacterium isolates that degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons colonize the surface of barley roots from a seed inoculum. Colonization was maintained in the presence of an aggressive root-colonizing pseudomonad. All five of the mycobacterium strains utilized components in root washes for growth but they differed in their potential for biofilm formation. Components in the barley root washes did not impede the mineralization of pyrene. An inexpensive, portable, flexible microcosm chamber system was constructed and implemented in pyrene mineralization experiments. The system facilitated control of sterile conditions, air flow-through, and collection of volatilized radiolabeled compounds. Mineralization rates of pyrene were higher …

A Survey Of The Bees Of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Southern Utah: Incidence, Abundance, And Community Dynamics, Olivia Messinger May 2006

A Survey Of The Bees Of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Southern Utah: Incidence, Abundance, And Community Dynamics, Olivia Messinger

Biology

A survey of the bees of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, southern Utah, was conducted over a period of four years. Six hundred and fifty-six species were discovered within the monument, including numerous range extensions, several new species, and three genera new to the state of Utah. This is the richest bee landscape studied to date; reasons for the high diversity include the large elevation gradient, the richness of flowering plants, many of which are limited in distribution and require specific pollinators, and the many small local populations of species. To test the significance of these features on patterns of bee …
