Biofuel Feedstocks: The Risk Of Future Invasions, Joseph M. Ditomaso, Jacob N. Barney, Allison M. Fox Nov 2007

Biofuel Feedstocks: The Risk Of Future Invasions, Joseph M. Ditomaso, Jacob N. Barney, Allison M. Fox

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

In an effort to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, expand domestic energy production, and maintain economic growth, public and private investments are being used to pursue dedicated feedstock crops for biofuel production. Unlike food crops grown for grain-based ethanol (e.g., corn), which require high inputs of fertilizers and pesticides and typically are grown on prime agricultural land, proposed lignocellulose-based energy crops (e.g., switchgrass) typically have a neutral or negative carbon budget, require relatively few economic or environmental inputs, and can be cultivated on marginal, lower-productivity land. Thus, a rapidly growing industry related to crop selection, cultivar improvement, and conversion technilogies is …

Beneficial Insects: Mantids, Erin W. Hodgson, Ron Patterson

All Current Publications

Mantids refer to an entire predatory group of insects in the order Mantodea. The term “mantis” or “praying mantis” actually refers to a particular genus of mantids. Therefore, only some mantids belong to the genus Mantis. There are about 2,000 species of mantids worldwide and at least 20 species in the U.S. Two mantid species dominate Utah gardens: European mantid and Chinese mantid.

Beneficial Insects: True Bugs, Erin W. Hodgson, Ron Patterson

All Current Publications

True bugs have piercing-sucking mouthparts and belong to the order Hemiptera and suborder Heteroptera. There are more than 38,000 species of true bugs, and are most closely related to aphids, cicadas, and leaf hoppers. Although some true bugs are considered pests, about one-third are predaceous. True bugs have forewings, or hemelytra, that cross over the back at rest, but sometimes the wings are reduced.

Psychology Faculty Publications

Colleges and universities are reaching new audiences and helping students complete degrees and programs of study through distance education departments and programs. Distance education attracts working professionals, employed students, and single parents (Johnson, et al., 2003), who may otherwise not be able to engage in a traditional academic setting. These individuals can now enroll in single courses or full undergraduate and graduate programs. Distance education departments offer courses and degrees through various modes of delivery, including: independent study, online (via course management applications such as Blackboard), interactive broadcast (via satellite), and Ed-NET courses (via internet/webcam).

Integrated Modeling Of Nitrate Contamination Of Groundwater In Agriculture-Dominated Watersheds, M. Almasri, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi Sep 2007

Integrated Modeling Of Nitrate Contamination Of Groundwater In Agriculture-Dominated Watersheds, M. Almasri, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents and implements a framework for modeling the impact of land use practices and protection alternatives on nitrate pollution of groundwater in agricultural watersheds. The framework utilizes the national land cover database (NLCD) of the United State Geological Survey (USGS) grid and a geographic information system (GIS) to account for the spatial distribution of on-ground nitrogen sources and corresponding loadings. The framework employs a soil nitrogen dynamic model to estimate nitrate leaching to groundwater. These estimates were used in developing a groundwater nitrate fate and transport model. The framework considers both point and non-point sources of nitrogen across …

Autonomous Distributed Lqr/Apf Control Algorithm For Multiple Small Spacecraft During Simultaneous Close Proximity Operations , Shawn Mccamish, Marcello Romano, Xiaoping Yun

Small Satellite Conference

An autonomous distributed LQR/APF control algorithm for multiple small spacecraft during simultaneous close proximity operations has been developed. This research contributes to the control of multiple small spacecraft for emerging operation, which may include inspection, assembly, or servicing. A control algorithm is proposed which combines the control effort efficiency of the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and the robust collision avoidance capability of the Artificial Potential Function (APF) methods. The LQR control effort serves as the attractive force toward goal positions, while APF-based repulsive functions provide collision avoidance for both fixed and moving obstacles. Refinement of both the APF and LQR …

Utilisation Of Dmc Experience And The Potential Usage Of Dmc Services To Provide Additional Support To A European Global Monitoring System Programme, M A Cutter, D Hodgson, P E Davies, A Baker, K Graham, S Mackin, M Vanotti, M N Sweeting, A Regan

Small Satellite Conference

Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd is reviewing the ability of small satellite platforms to add complementary capability to the presently defined Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) space segment, allowing the broadest possible set of user requirements to be met. A set of user-focused services has been compared with the instruments and measurement capabilities defined for the currently proposed Sentinel platforms. This comparison illustrated the challenges of using a few satellites, as in the current Sentinel scenario, carrying multiple instruments to serve the diverse needs of land, coastal, oceanic, emergency response and emergency management users.

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The authors present findings from two landscape epidemiology studies of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in northern Colorado mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). First, the effects of human land use on disease prevalence were explored by formulating a set of models estimating CWD prevalence in relation to differences in human land use, sex and geographic location. Prevalence was higher in developed areas and among male deer suggesting that anthropogenic influences (changes in land use), differences in exposure risk between sexes and landscape-scaled heterogeneity are associated with CWD prevalence. The second study focused on identifying scales of mule deer movement and mixing that …

Does Removing Coyotes For Livestock Protection Benefit Free-Ranging Ungulates?, Justin L. Harrington, Michael R. Conover Jun 2007

Does Removing Coyotes For Livestock Protection Benefit Free-Ranging Ungulates?, Justin L. Harrington, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We studied the effects of coyote (Canis latrans) control for livestock protection on native ungulates during 2003 and 2004 on 7 sites in Utah and Colorado, USA, totaling over 1,900 km2. We found no relationships between coyote control variables and offspring/female deer ratios. However, control effort (no. of hr spent aerial gunning for coyotes) and success (no. of coyotes taken) were positively correlated with numbers of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) observed per kilometer of transect. Our results suggest that coyote control for livestock protection may increase densities of mule deer and pronghorn in areas where it …
