Overcoming Fear: The Effect Of Anxiolytic Medication Administration On Interval Timing Distracters, Chance Christensen Jan 2014

Overcoming Fear: The Effect Of Anxiolytic Medication Administration On Interval Timing Distracters, Chance Christensen

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

Affective disorders such as depression, phobias, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder impair the ability to time in the seconds-to-minutes range, i.e., interval timing. According to the Relative Time-Sharing (RTS) model, presentation of task-irrelevant distracters during a timing task results in a delay in responding suggesting a failure to maintain subjective time in working memory, possibly due to attentional and working memory resources being diverted away from timing. Given that some anxiolytic medications have beneficial effects on attention and working memory, e.g., decreasing emotional response to negative events, we hypothesized that they would result in a decreased effect of distracters on …

A Semi-Automated Single Day Image Differencing Technique To Identify Animals In Aerial Imagery, Pat Terletzky, Robert Douglas Ramsey Jan 2014

A Semi-Automated Single Day Image Differencing Technique To Identify Animals In Aerial Imagery, Pat Terletzky, Robert Douglas Ramsey

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Our research presents a proof-of-concept that explores a new and innovative method to identify large animals in aerial imagery with single day image differencing. We acquired two aerial images of eight fenced pastures and conducted a principal component analysis of each image. We then subtracted the first principal component of the two pasture images followed by heuristic thresholding to generate polygons. The number of polygons represented the number of potential cattle (Bos taurus) and horses (Equus caballus) in the pasture. The process was considered semi-automated because we were not able to automate the identification of spatial …

Warming, Soil Moisture, And Loss Of Snow Increase Bromus Tectorum’S Population Growth Rate, Aldo Compagnoni, Peter B. Adler Jan 2014

Warming, Soil Moisture, And Loss Of Snow Increase Bromus Tectorum’S Population Growth Rate, Aldo Compagnoni, Peter B. Adler

Green Canyon Environmental Research Area, Logan Utah

Climate change threatens to exacerbate the impacts of invasive species. In temperate ecosystems, direct effects of warming may be compounded by dramatic reductions in winter snow cover. Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) is arguably the most destructive biological invader in basins of the North American Intermountain West, and warming could increase its performance through direct effects on demographic rates or through indirect effects mediated by loss of snow. We conducted a two-year experimental manipulation of temperature and snow pack to test whether 1) warming increases cheatgrass population growth rate and 2) reduced snow cover contributes to cheatgrass’ positive response to …

Measured And Modeled Soil Moisture Compared With Cosmic-Ray Neutron Probe Estimates In A Mixed Forest, Ling Lv, Trenton E. Franz, David A. Robinson, Scott B. Jones Jan 2014

Measured And Modeled Soil Moisture Compared With Cosmic-Ray Neutron Probe Estimates In A Mixed Forest, Ling Lv, Trenton E. Franz, David A. Robinson, Scott B. Jones

T.W. "Doc" Daniel Experimental Forest

Soil moisture is a key variable in most environmental processes, and the cosmic-ray neutron probe (CRNP) fills a niche for intermediate-scale soil moisture measurements. In this study, the CRNP estimated soil moisture was compared with a soil moisture measurement network including 108 time domain transmissometry (TDT) probes. We also used a Hydrus-1D numerical model of measured soil moisture at targeted locations by inversely fitting soil hydraulic parameters used to simulate soil moisture in the near surface (0.03 and 0.05 m) during the growing seasons of 2011 and 2012. Both simulated and TDT-measured soil moisture were used in constructing the depth-weighted …

Prologemena To An Future Rhetoric Of Shadows, Shades And Silhouettes, Gene Washington

English Faculty Publications

In this essay, following the implications of "prolegomena" (Greek: "to say before"), i describe what a rhetoric constructed of textual shadows (the word "shadow" in a text) would look like. Specifically, what would be the various motives and rhetorical intentions, for a writer (of all genres) to employ the word "shadow" or a member of its semantic "family."

The brain’s ability to learn and remember is a topic of extensive debate and research. Mammals share many similarities, including the way in which information from the outside world is processed and stored. Mammalian circadian rhythms have long been thought to be essentially involved with these processes. This experiment is designed to explore the brain’s ability to process and store information at different times of the day. Changes in or the absence of circadian neurotransmitters lead to serious impairments correlated with sleep and wakefulness [1]. Orexin, one neurochemical that will be examined in this experiment, helps mediate arousal and has …

Interactions Between Megaherbivores And Microherbivores: Elephant Browsing Reduces Host Plant Quality For Caterpillars, H. Hrabar, Johan T. Du Toit Jan 2014

Interactions Between Megaherbivores And Microherbivores: Elephant Browsing Reduces Host Plant Quality For Caterpillars, H. Hrabar, Johan T. Du Toit

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Direct effects of herbivory, and indirect effects through induced responses to herbivory, can both influence the susceptibility of plants to subsequent attacks by herbivores. There has, however, been very little research (if any) to investigate how the large-scale effects of browsing by megaherbivores (>1000 kg body mass) on woody plants might influence the subsequent use of those plants by phytophagous insects. We conducted a field study in Kruger National Park, South Africa, to investigate whether browsing by elephants (Loxodonta africana) on mopane trees (Colophospermum mopane) had any influence on the subsequent selection of those trees by ovipositing mopane moths …

Quaking Aspen In The Residential-Wildland Interface: Elk Herbivory Hinders Forest Conservation, Paul C. Rogers, Allison Jones, James C. Catlin, James Shuler, Arthur Morris, Michael R. Kuhns Jan 2014

Quaking Aspen In The Residential-Wildland Interface: Elk Herbivory Hinders Forest Conservation, Paul C. Rogers, Allison Jones, James C. Catlin, James Shuler, Arthur Morris, Michael R. Kuhns

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) forests are experiencing numerous impediments across North America. In the West, recent drought, fire suppression, insects, diseases, climate trends, inappropriate management, and ungulate herbivory are impacting these high biodiversity forests. Additionally, ecological tension zones are sometimes created where the above factors intermingle with jurisdictional boundaries. The public-private land interface may result in stress to natural areas where game species find refuge and plentiful forage at the expense of ecosystem function. We examined putative herbivore impacts to aspen forests at Wolf Creek Ranch (WCR), a large residential landscape in northern Utah. Forty-three ha-1 monitoring plots were …

Sin Taxes And Sindustry: Revenue, Paternalism, And Political Interest, Adam J. Hoffer, William F. Shughart Ii, Michael D. Thomas

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Revenue shortfalls associated with the Great Recession and the slow recovery that followed have placed the budgets of many U.S. state and local governments under heavy stress. In the past several years, lingering economic troubles have eroded governmental tax bases while voters have remained strongly resistant to proposals for cutting public spending or raising taxes on income, property, or other broad bases. This has left many states searching for new revenue sources. Particularly attractive targets for "revenue enhancement" are goods that policymakes deem to be "sinful" or misguided because they are bad for the user or generate negative externalities or …

2 Growing Risk for Alzheimer’s Alzheimer’s disease is more than just forgetfulness. It robs people of their abilities to think, remember, reason and control their behavior. A combination of genetic and environmental factors contributes to the disease’s development, but the process may begin decades before symptoms appear. Researchers are working to discover what those factors might be and how people might decrease their risk of developing the disease.

Pcr Based Fetal Sex Determination In Bovine Circulating Maternal Plasma, E. Barkat, M. Labram, L. Rickords Jan 2014

Pcr Based Fetal Sex Determination In Bovine Circulating Maternal Plasma, E. Barkat, M. Labram, L. Rickords

Biology Posters

PCR-based fetal sex determination by use of fetal DNA in maternal plasma in bovine is a novel scientific method that has some cost advantages in the animal production industry. In this study, our objective was to determine fetal sex in pregnant cows and establish the lower boundary at which Y-chromosome specific fetal DNA could be detected in the circulating maternal plasma using Bov97M primers. In this experiment, our results showed that 10 pg was the limit in which the Y-chromosome specific DNA was detectable in the circulating maternal plasma. Future experiments will be conducted to determine the earliest gestational age …
