There are many misconceptions concerning farmers and ranchers, and not understood by those living in urban areas. However they are looked upon, the successful managers in today’s production agriculture must have a firm knowledge of many different resources. Some of these resources include but are not limited to; soil, grasses and/or other crops, cattle and/or other production animals and their biological processes, labor resources. In order to be profitable these operators must be able to manage their finances as well.

Educational Policies Committee Program Proposal, College Of Agriculture And Applied Sciences, March 28, 2014 - Restructuring Of The Toxicology Graduate Programs, Utah State University

Educational Policies Committee

This request is to offer MS and PhD degrees in toxicology within the Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences (ADVS). This is not a request for new toxicology graduate degrees because these graduate programs currently exist at Utah State University in the form of the Interdepartmental Toxicology Program (ITP). This request proposes are structuring of the toxicology graduate programs starting with a discontinuation of the ITP program (a separate R401), and then continuation of the toxicology graduate programs under ADVS alone (this proposal).

Studies on invasive plant management are often short in duration and limited in the methods tested, and lack an adequate description of plant communities that replace the invader following removal. Here we present a comprehensive review of management studies on a single species, in an effort to elucidate future directions for research in invasive plant management. We reviewed the literature on Phragmites management in North America in an effort to synthesize our understanding of management efforts, identify gaps in knowledge and improve the efficacy of management. Additionally, we assessed recent ecological findings concerning Phragmites mechanisms of invasion and integrated these …

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Towards the goal of producing fully human polyclonal antibodies (hpAbs or hIgGs) in transchromosomic (Tc) cattle, we previously reported that Tc cattle carrying a human artificial chromosome (HAC) comprising the entire unrearranged human immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy-chain (hIGH), kappa-chain (hIGK), and lambda-chain (hIGL) germline loci produced physiological levels of hIgGs when both of the bovine immunoglobulin mu heavy-chains, bIGHM and bIGHML1, were homozygously inactivated (bIGHM-/-, bIGHML1-/-; double knockouts or DKO). However, because endogenous bovine immunoglobulin light chain loci are still intact, the light chains are produced both from the hIGK and hIGL genomic loci on the HAC and from the endogenous …

Teeth And Heavyset Kids: Intervention Similarities Between Childhood Obesity And Oral Health Interventions Within Native American Societies, Rodney C. Haring, Warren Skye Jr., Brenda L. Battleson, Maxine Brings-Him-Back-Janis, Nicolette Teufel-Shone

Journal of Indigenous Research

A systematic literature review was conducted focusing on childhood obesity and oral health interventions which may have relevance to Native American children, their families, and their communities. Childhood obesity and oral health have become a significant problem across Indian Country. Subsequently, a number of oral health and obesity interventions are emerging developed for ethnic minority populations including Native Americans. The objective of this review was to determine best practices of various obesity and oral health interventions used with Native youth. The review found a number of prevalence related studies showing both health conditions were concerns within Native American societies (n=94). …

The Evolution Of Self-Control, Julie K. Young Mar 2014

The Evolution Of Self-Control, Julie K. Young

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Although scientists have identified surprising cognitive flexibility in animals and potentially unique features of human psychology, we know less about the selective forces that favor cognitive evolution, or the proximate biological mechanisms underlying this process. We tested 36 species in two problem-solving tasks measuring self-control and evaluated the leading hypotheses regarding how and why cognition evolves. Across species, differences in absolute (not relative) brain volume best predicted performance on these tasks. Within primates, dietary breadth also predicted cognitive performance, whereas social group size did not. These results suggest that increases in absolute brain size provided the biological foundation for evolutionary …

The Status Of Women Leaders In Utah Nonprofits, Susan R. Madsen, D. Candice Backus, Glaucia Jones, Brian Fischer

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

In September 2013, the Center for American Progress released a report titled “ The State of Women in America: A 50- State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation.” This report ranks Utah last of all 50 states in terms of women being in positions of decision making and leadership. Although the focus is solely on the percentage of women in elected office and private sector management positions, we feel that a more detailed look on the status of women in leadership in various sectors within the state would be useful. This is the second of four 2014 …

Beef Cattle Nutrition, Minerals, Troy D. Cooper, Darrell Rothlisberger, Dale Zobell Feb 2014

Beef Cattle Nutrition, Minerals, Troy D. Cooper, Darrell Rothlisberger, Dale Zobell

All Current Publications

Beef cattle require a number of dietary mineral elements for regular bodily maintenance, growth and reproduction. Minerals that are essential in larger amounts are labeled as major or macro elements. Those needed in smaller amounts are called micro, minor or trace minerals. These terms, have no relationship to the metabolic significance of a mineral in the diet. A trace mineral can be as crucial to the health and performance of an animal as a major mineral.

Analysis Of Mexican Spotted Owl Diet In The Canyonlands Of Southern Utah, Natalie Schvaneveldt Jan 2014

Analysis Of Mexican Spotted Owl Diet In The Canyonlands Of Southern Utah, Natalie Schvaneveldt

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

While diets of Mexican Spotted Owls within forested habitat have been studied, little research has been published on the diet of owls that occupy canyon habitats (see Willey In Press). Since the Mexican Spotted Owl is federally listed as a threatened species, it is important to identify primary prey of Utah’s canyon dwelling owls to better understand their dietary needs (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1993). We hope that the findings from this research can better inform state and federal managers on spotted owl prey use and aid in future management of small mammal populations in canyon habitats. We intend …
