Blindingly White: A Critical Look At The Claims Of Racial Intolerance Over A Name, Based On The Understandings Of White Privilege., Paul Veridian

Student Research Symposium

What makes something racist? In this presentaiton will look at the National Football League (NLF) team name 'The Washington Redskins' and the rhetorical choices to keep the name and deny the connotations of 'White Privilege' in modern America. I will do this by showing the different associations being made by those claiming the team's name is a racial slur and those being made by the Washington team's owner and the commissioner of the NFL. I will also cover parts of stasis theory that is the basis for the differing claims that shape much of the contention. By the end of …

Jones, William J. Bradford, Gail E. Bingham, Richard L. Pfeiffer, John H. Prueger, Jerry L. Hatfield

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Particulate matter (PM) emissions from a typical spring agricultural tillage sequence and a strip-till conservation tillage sequence in California’s San Joaquin Valley were estimated to calculate the emissions control efficiency (η) of the strip-till conservation management practice (CMP). Filter-based PM samplers, PM-calibrated optical particle counters (OPCs), and a PM-calibrated light detection and ranging (lidar) system were used to monitored upwind and downwind PM concentrations. Emission rates were estimated through inverse modeling coupled with the filter and OPC measurements and through applying a mass balance to the PM concentrations derived from lidar data. Sampling irregularities and errors prevented the estimation of …

Sounding The Horn: Howling About The Moral Outrage Of The Politics Of The Gray Wolf, Paul H. Veridian Apr 2015

Sounding The Horn: Howling About The Moral Outrage Of The Politics Of The Gray Wolf, Paul H. Veridian

Browse All Undergraduate research

In this paper I will show how through the use of a moral argument, the article titled “OR-7’s Sister Dies Grisly Death…..” is used to persuade the audience about the moral outrage being perpetrated upon the gray wolf population by the state of Idaho. I will show how the author uses the tactics of vilify and ennoble, melodrama, naming, god and devil terms, and the tragic frame to get this done. The use of the moral argument creates moral outrage in the audience, which polarizes the issue.

Recent elevated temperatures and prolonged droughts in many already water-limited regions throughout the world, including the southwestern United States, are likely to intensify according to future climate-model projections. This warming and drying can negatively affect perennial vegetation and lead to the degradation of ecosystem properties. To better understand these detrimental effects, we formulate a conceptual model of dryland ecosystem vulnerability to climate change that integrates hypotheses on how plant species will respond to increases in temperature and drought, including how plant responses to climate are modified by landscape, soil and plant attributes that are integral to water availability and use. …

Addressing Light Pollution At Utah State University, Rachel Nydegger Mar 2015

Addressing Light Pollution At Utah State University, Rachel Nydegger

Browse All Undergraduate research

Many outdoor light fixtures illuminate in all directions, meaning that a large por- tion of light emitted is sent upwards. This excess of light light pollution – repre- sents wasted energy and money, decreases public safety, harms nocturnal and migra- tory animals, and destroys our view of the night sky. While Utah State University Facilities does have a program in place to retrofit light fixtures, and newly installed fixtures are chosen with light pollution in consideration, many of the light posts on campus continue to pollute the night sky. With the support of the Student Sustain- ability Offices Blue Goes …
