▪ There are two prevalent forms of sexual selection in the animals:Male-Male Competition and Female Choice

▪ Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) have been shown to demonstrate Female Choice

▪ Environmental factors, such as background color, have been shown to affect female interest in specific males

▪ Guppies tend to show interest in the color orange and we predicted that females would show a preference for males on an orange background

“They used to bug me really badly (talking about spirits). Anyway(very quiet). So I was on the treadmill, (slight laugh) which I didn’t realize it’s late, I don't know, so this weird song came on. And whenever I, whenever I hear, It’s something by Jason Derulo, so it’s like, (gets louder) completely not related, but whenever I, whenever I hear it it reminds me of that, so I like it came on, so I feel like this -VWOOMP- like immediately there’s a spirit like RIGHT next to me. My dog was like, cause, yeah, I brought Gemma in, she kind’ve …

Restoration Islands: A Tool For Efficiently Restoring Dryland Ecosystems?, Kristin B. Hulvey, Elizabeth A. Leger, Lauren M. Porensky, Leslie M. Roche, Kari E. Veblen, Adam Fund, Julea Shaw, Elise S. Gornish

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Restoration islands are concentrated plantings in strategic locations, created to efficiently use resources to achieve restoration goals. These methods have been used effectively in mesic ecosystems, particularly tropical forests, where the goal of island plantings is often to “nucleate” across a degraded area, providing a seed source for spread outside the planted area. Here, we consider how an island strategy might be used to achieve restoration goals in dryland ecosystems, where limited resources and large areas of degraded land make restoration extremely challenging. In contrast to more productive areas, spread or “nucleation” from restoration islands in drylands may not occur …

The Moral Dimensions Of The Research Reproducibility Crisis, Rachel Robinson-Greene Oct 2017

The Moral Dimensions Of The Research Reproducibility Crisis, Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The labor of scientists has benefited society tremendously. Advancements in medicine and technology have improved both the length and the quality of human lives. Scientific studies have been and continue to be a crucial part of that process. Science, when done well, is indispensable to a healthy, happy, curious human race. Unfortunately, science isn’t always done well. When done poorly, studies can have disastrous effects. People tend to trust claims made by scientists, and that trust turns out to be unwarranted if something has gone wrong with the research.

Winter Ecology And Spring Dispersal Of Common Ravens In Wyoming, Luke W. Peebles, Michael R. Conover Oct 2017

Winter Ecology And Spring Dispersal Of Common Ravens In Wyoming, Luke W. Peebles, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Numbers of Common Ravens (Corvus corax) have increased in western North America, and these high abundances are the source of problems throughout the species' range. Little is known about the winter ecology of ravens. We studied a population of ravens in Wyoming during the winters of 2013–2015; our goals were to examine use of landfills for foraging and use of anthropogenic structures for roosting, as well as dispersal patterns of ravens from these landfills in the spring. On average, 22% of radio-marked ravens foraged at landfills on a given day and 68% roosted at anthropogenic sites (e.g. on buildings or …

Wildland Recreation Disturbance: Broad‐Scale Spatial Analysis And Management, Kevin J. Gutzwiller, Ashley D'Antonio, Christopher Monz

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Wildland recreation that does not involve animal harvests (non‐consumptive recreation) often influences various components of natural systems, including soils, water, air, soundscapes, vegetation, and wildlife. The effects of non‐consumptive recreation on wildlife have typically been assessed at spatial scales that are not only much smaller than the overall distributions of this disturbance but also much smaller than the areas that species use during a season or year. This disparity in scales has prevented effective assessment and management of broad‐scale recreation disturbance for many species, especially wildlife. We applied three software systems (ArcGIS, FRAGSTATS, and Conefor) to demonstrate how metrics commonly …

Impaired Latent Inhibition In Gdnf-Deficient Mice Exposed To Chronic Stress, Mona Buhusi, Colten K. Brown, Catalin V. Buhusi Oct 2017

Impaired Latent Inhibition In Gdnf-Deficient Mice Exposed To Chronic Stress, Mona Buhusi, Colten K. Brown, Catalin V. Buhusi

Psychology Faculty Publications

Increased reactivity to stress is maladaptive and linked to abnormal behaviors and psychopathology. Chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) alters catecholaminergic neurotransmission and remodels neuronal circuits involved in learning, attention and decision making. Glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is essential for the physiology and survival of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra and of noradrenergic neurons in the locus coeruleus. Up-regulation of GDNF expression during stress is linked to resilience; on the other hand, the inability to up-regulate GDNF in response to stress, as a result of either genetic or epigenetic modifications, induces behavioral alterations. For example, GDNF-deficient mice exposed to chronic stress exhibit …

Dehaan, Max Fraser, Ahmad Sallam, Traci Kantarski, Katherine Frels, Jesse Poland, Donald Wyse, James A. Anderson

Forage and Range Research Laboratory Publications

Intermediate wheatgrass [IWG; Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & D.R. Dewey subsp. intermedium] is being developed as a new perennial grain crop that has a large allohexaploid genome similar to that of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Breeding for increased seed weight is one of the primary goals for improving grain yield of IWG. As a new crop, however, the genetic architecture of seed weight and size has not been characterized, and selective breeding of IWG may be more intricate than wheat because of its self-incompatible mating system and perennial growth habit. Here, seed weight, seed area size, seed width, and seed …

Electron Yield Of Challenging Materials: Low Density Polyethylene And Carbon-Composite Nanodielectrics, Matthew Robertson, Jordan Lee, Jr Dennison Oct 2017

Electron Yield Of Challenging Materials: Low Density Polyethylene And Carbon-Composite Nanodielectrics, Matthew Robertson, Jordan Lee, Jr Dennison

Presentations

The electron yield—the ratio of the number of emitted electrons to incident electrons—is a key material property that characterizes how materials will charge due to exposure to electron fluxes. The USU Materials Physics Group has developed expertise in measuring this for a wide array of conductors, semiconductors and insulators, including many challenging materials. The basic definitions associated with electron yield and how they are measured will be discussed. We will highlight many critical applications investigated at USU, particularly those associated with spacecraft charging as materials interact with space plasma environments. Electron irradiation experiments conducted to investigate the electron transport, charging, …

Putting Writers At Rest Into Motion, Cody Kelley Oct 2017

Putting Writers At Rest Into Motion, Cody Kelley

Tutor's Column

Many students whose studies emphasize science-based fields often struggle to understand why writing skills are important and necessary. For this reason, writing center tutors have the opportunity to adjust tutoring practices in such a way that students are equipped for both educational and professional experiences. Research has shown that the majority of college graduates lack basic written communication skills employers look for, suggesting a disconnect between English classes and other writing situations. As tutors understand the struggles of science-based students, they can adjust tutoring practices such that students are comfortable learning about writing and translate those skills into all aspects …
