The Autumn Leaf, Natalie Randall
The Autumn Leaf, Natalie Randall
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
There was a little Autumn leaf, and well, he was born in the spring clearly, first, you know. He comes out, he’s loving the world, enjoying the little sunshine, and growing bigger and bigger. And then in fall, he turns a pretty color, and um, then he realizes his friends start to fall off the tree and then he’s like ‘Oh no, it’s the end of my life!’, and he gets really depressed about it, but then he remembers that when he goes in the ground he’s going to make fertilizer for new little plants and it makes him happy. …

The Value Of Native Plants And Local Production In An Era Of Global Agriculture, Oren Shelef, Peter J. Weisberg, Frederick D. Provenza
The Value Of Native Plants And Local Production In An Era Of Global Agriculture, Oren Shelef, Peter J. Weisberg, Frederick D. Provenza
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
For addressing potential food shortages, a fundamental tradeoff exists between investing more resources to increasing productivity of existing crops, as opposed to increasing crop diversity by incorporating more species. We explore ways to use local plants as food resources and the potential to promote food diversity and agricultural resilience. We discuss how use of local plants and the practice of local agriculture can contribute to ongoing adaptability in times of global change. Most food crops are now produced, transported, and consumed long distances from their homelands of origin. At the same time, research and practices are directed primarily at improving …
Fates Of Rare Species Under Siege From Invasion: Persistence Of Coccinella Novemnotata Herbst In Western North America Alongside An Invasive Congener, Edward W. Evans
Fates Of Rare Species Under Siege From Invasion: Persistence Of Coccinella Novemnotata Herbst In Western North America Alongside An Invasive Congener, Edward W. Evans
Biology Faculty Publications
Species invading new geographic regions may threaten continued existence of similar, indigenous relatives, particularly those species whose rarity may reflect an already tenuous existence. The spectacular colonization of North America in recent decades by Coccinella septempunctata L. has generated widespread concern over potentially adverse effects on population viability of native species of ladybird beetles (Coccinellidae). Coccinella novemnotata Herbst in particular has been hypothesized to be at great risk, as this species apparently dwindled in numbers across much of North America during the twentieth century. Here results of sampling diverse habitats over three decades are examined to address the fate of …
Goat Boy Legend, Elise Teichert
Goat Boy Legend, Elise Teichert
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
Back in Orangeville, a long time ago, there was a little baby who was abandoned by his parents on a goat farm. No one really knows why they left him, other than they didn’t want him. Must have been an ugly kid. The goat farmer found the boy but couldn’t take care of him, so he left him to live with the goats. The boy grew up with the goats but started changing as he got older. I don’t think he ever learned to speak, just make “baaaaaing” noises like the goats. He started to get really hairy, grow hooves …

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
We had heard that nuns who were pregnant or had broken rules were sent there as sort of a punishment and to exile them from other nuns. We heard that one nun had had her baby while up there. She wanted to run away with the baby so that they couldn’t take it away. She set her baby in the woods so that at night she could come back and grab the baby and run. When she went back to get her baby it wasn’t there and the other nuns had drowned it in the pool. So a group of …

Heritable Sperm Chromatin Epigenetics: A Break To Remember, Ralph G. Meyer, Chelsea C. Ketchum, Mirella L. Meyer-Ficca
Heritable Sperm Chromatin Epigenetics: A Break To Remember, Ralph G. Meyer, Chelsea C. Ketchum, Mirella L. Meyer-Ficca
UAES Publications
Sperm chromatin not only has a unique structure to condense and protect the paternal DNA in transit, but also provides epigenetic information that supports embryonic development. Most of the unique sperm nuclear architecture is formed during the sweeping postmeiotic chromatin remodeling events in spermiogenesis, where the majority of nucleosomes are removed and replaced by protamines. The remaining histones and other chromatin proteins are located in structurally and transcriptionally relevant positions in the genome and carry diverse post-translational modifications relevant to the control of embryonic gene expression. How such postmeiotic chromatin-based programming of sperm epigenetic information proceeds, and how susceptible the …

Increasing Commerce Competitiveness: Case Study On Solving Issues In The Fruit Supply Chain In The Dominican Republic, Which Limit Exports, And Self-Reliance, Maria G. Mera Rivas
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Agriculture was the main economic pillar of the Dominican Republic from its origins. Government decisions during the 80s and 90s resulted in high imports of food products, migration of rural workers to the urban areas, loss of arable land, and disinterest from a younger generation to continue food production. This case study explains the findings from research conducted in the Dominican Republic and Georgia, USA between 2014 and 2017. The researcher interviewed major players in the fruit sector in both areas, used data from the cacao sector to analyze exports behavior, and applied Porter’s Diamond of National Advantage to the …
Lactational Performance And Energy Partitioning Of Dairy Cows Supplemented With N-Acetyl-L-Methionine During Mid To Late Lactation, Tyson George Grisenti
Lactational Performance And Energy Partitioning Of Dairy Cows Supplemented With N-Acetyl-L-Methionine During Mid To Late Lactation, Tyson George Grisenti
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The N-acetyl-L-methionine (NALM) molecule is a methionine (Met) derivative produced via acetylation of the L-Met α-amino group with an N-acetyl group. This molecule has been shown to be bioavailable and capable of fulfilling the dietary requirement for Met in animals and humans. The current experiment was conducted to test a hypothesis that lactating dairy cows fed with NALM would increase milk production by increasing N and energy utilization efficiencies in a dose dependent manner. Eight multiparous Holstein cows that were mid lactation (124 ± 13 days-in-milk) with similar milk production were used in a 4 x …
Measurement Of Agriculture-Related Air Pollutant Emissions Using Point And Remote Sensors, Kori D. Moore
Measurement Of Agriculture-Related Air Pollutant Emissions Using Point And Remote Sensors, Kori D. Moore
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Measuring air pollution emissions from agricultural activities is usually difficult because of their large area and variability. Traditional air quality sensors, called point samplers, measure conditions in one location, which may not adequately measure a plume. Remote sensors, instruments that measure pollution along a line rather than at a single point, are better able to measure conditions around large areas. This dissertation reports on four agricultural air emissions studies that used both point and remote sensors for comparison. The methods used to calculate the emissions are based on previous work and are further developed in these studies. In particular, an …

Investigation And Engineering Of Polyketide Biosynthetic Pathways, Lei Sun
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research is focused on investigation and engineering of natural product biosynthetic pathways for efficient production of pharmaceutically important molecules or generation of new bioactive molecules for drug development.
Natural products are an important source of therapeutics, such as chromomycin (anti-cancer), emodin (anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor) and sprolaxine (anti-Helicobacter pylori). Metabolic engineering of natural product biosynthetic pathways shows its promise for creating and producing valuable compounds with chemical diversity for drug discovery. One goal of this research is to create highly efficient strains to biosynthesize valuable natural products. The engineered Streptomyces roseiscleroticus strain constructed in this work showed higher …

Stillbirth: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Clinical Encounter For Couples, Michael Q. King
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
With approximately 65 stillbirths occurring each day in the United States, a significant number of parents are left to navigate a difficult grieving process. An event like stillbirth presents many individual and relational challenges. For this study, researchers focused on the hospital experience for couples following notification of stillbirth. Interviews were held with 8 couples that had experienced stillbirth within the past 10 years. Researchers wanted to know what similarities and differences existed in how mothers and fathers described the clinical encounter.
The data for this study were collected through interviews. Couples were encouraged to share as much or as …
Assessment Of Restoration Seedings On Utah Watershed Restoration Initiative Project Sites, Lacey E. Wilder
Assessment Of Restoration Seedings On Utah Watershed Restoration Initiative Project Sites, Lacey E. Wilder
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Overabundance of shrubs poses a major threat to semiarid ecosystems due to degraded understory vegetation. Previous efforts suggest a need for greater understanding of which management practices work best to improve these ecosystems. I sought to develop a better understanding of how the relative performance of commonly seeded species is influenced by three sagebrush removal techniques.
I calculated effect sizes for cover and frequency to estimate relative changes in abundance of 15 common plant species seeded at 63 restoration sites throughout Utah. Shrubs were reduced by fire or mechanical treatment. Effect sizes were assessed using meta-analysis techniques for two post-treatment …
Urban Bobcat (Lynx Rufus) Ecology In The Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas Metroplex, Julie M. Golla
Urban Bobcat (Lynx Rufus) Ecology In The Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas Metroplex, Julie M. Golla
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Urban landscapes are quickly replacing native habitat around the world. As wildlife and people increasingly overlap in their shared space and resources, so does the potential for human-wildlife conflict, especially with predators. Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are a top predator in several urban areas across the United States and a potential contributor to human-carnivore conflicts. This study evaluated the movements and habitat use of bobcats in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Texas metroplex. Spatial data were collected from 10 bobcats via Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) for approximately one year. Average home range size was 4.60 km2 (n=9, SE=0.99 km …
