Cucumber Growing, W. R. Beattie
Cucumber Growing, W. R. Beattie
Ba
CUCUMBERS are included among the 20 important commercial truck crops that are shipped to the markets of the United States in large quantities. The area planted to cucumbers for table purposes in 1940 was 42,870 acres, and the crop produced was valued at $4,993,000, as reported by the Crop Reporting Board, Division of Agricultural Statistics, Agricultural Marketing Service. This acreage is exclusive of approximately 91,000 acres of cucumbers grown for pickles and also of the crop produced in greenhouses. This bulletin deals only with the production of table or slicing cucumbers as a field crop and those grown in coldframes, …

Bulletin No. 306 - Report Of The Agricultural Experiment Station Utah State Agricultural College, Logan, R. H. Walker
UAES Bulletins
The agricultural experiment stations have contributed in a very material way to the progress of agriculture in the United States not only by the development of better crops and livestock and production practices, but, through basic research on the many and varied problems of agriculture, they have furnished an understanding of those principles upon which progress must depend.
The permanent value of these research centers to the progress of agriculture is no better illustrated than in the present emergency. The ability of farmers to meet the tremendous additional contributions to defense in the way of increased food supplies is dependent …

This study is one of a series being conducted by the Department of Agricultural Economics which are designed to furnish a general description and a detailed analysis of the type of farming in various parts of Utah. The specific purpose of the general state-wide study is to: (1) locate and delineate the major type-of-farming areas of the state; (2) analyze and describe the major and some minor types of farming within each area; and (3) indicate the fundamental reasons for the principal differences which exist within and among these type-of-farming areas.
Upon the completion of the first part of the …

Wool, as it is shorn from the sheep, is known as grease wool. The first step in the manufacturing of wool is scouring, or removal of all grease and foreign matter. Within any given grade, as determined by length of staple and fineness of fiber, the yield of clean wool is the primary factor in determining the value of the original grease wool. The price of scoured or clean wool is multiplied by the percentage yield of clean wool to determine the value of the grease wool.

Bulletin No. 297 - Pale Western Cutworm, C. J. Sorenson, H. F. Thornley
UAES Bulletins
THE PALE WESTERN CUTWORM ( Agrotis orthogonia Morr.) has caused periodic damage to dry-farm grains in Utah during the past 25 years. In the spring of 1916, entomologists of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station were asked to determine the cause of large bare spots occurring in fields of fall-planted wheat in the Indianola district of Sanpete County. A moderately severe infestation of pale western cutworm was found to be the causative agent. Pack reported that during the spring of 1929 this insect had inflicted serious damage to fall wheat at Fairview, Sanpete County.

A Survey Of The Incidence Of Trichinosis In Northern Utah, As Indicated By The Intradermal Skin Test And Post-Mortem Examinations Of Diaphragms, H. W. Merrill
Biology
Definition and History. Trichinella spiralis, the causative organism in trichinosis, and commonly termed the "trichina worm," was first known by its encysted larval stage in the muscles of man as early as 1821, when it was noted by Tiedemann in Germany, and again in 1828, when it was seen by Peacock of London. Mr. Paget, who was a student at the Saint Bartholomew Hospital in London, noted whitish specks in the muscles of an Italian, aged 45, who had died at the hospital. Suspecting these specks to be produced by a minute internal parasite, Mr. Paget gave portions of …

Checking stations operated during the deer hunting season serve a two-fold purpose. It has long been recognized that such inspection stations aid greatly in the enforcement of hunting laws through the detection of illegal practices, and in many cases have been set up with this as a primary purpose. A more far reaching objective, however, is the collection of information to aid in the solution of the problems of maintenance of the range and the deer herd, and determination of the quality and quantity of the deer removal.

Cambrian Stratigraphy In The Northern Wasatch Region, George Burke Maxey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An exhaustive field study of the Cambrian stratigraphy of the northern Wasatch region indicates that in addition to the Blacksmith Fork section there are two complete and better exposed middle and upper sections. Several other good exposures of the lower Middle Cambrian section have been studied in detail. The Spence shale is found to be a member low in the Langston, not the basal member of the Ute. Relative ages of the Spence shale and Ptarmigania faunas have been determined. Other Cambrian faunal zones have been discovered and are discussed. Paleontologic evidence suggests that the Nounan formation is of Upper …

Bulletin No. 295 - Comparison Of Two Methods Of Determining Wool Density, Milton A. Madsen, Ralph W. Phillips, John V. Christensen, Roy L. Henrie

Density of the fleece is one of the primary factors determining the wool-producing capacity of the sheep. Sheepmen have attempted to evaluate density by handling the fleece. This method is not sufficiently refined for use in experimental work, and may be subject to errors and misinterpretations. For example, if two fleeces are alike in density and diameter of fibers, yet differ in length, the longer fleece will feel less dense. If, on this basis, the sheep with the fleece that appeared most dense were selected for breeding, selection would be away from the longer fleece. Any method that can be …

The plague problem is potentially of grave public health importance. The history of this disease over a period of centuries shows that it has several times assumed epidemic proportions, especially in cities. History also shows that when the disease appears in bubonic form contracted from rat fleas, it sooner or later may assume the pneumonic type and be spread from person to person with fatal results.
From the evidence presented to the conference it appears that complete control of plague is not economically feasible without a great increase in Federal, State, and local expenditures. It is recommended that funds are …

The foundation of progress in agriculture as in any other industry is research. Research has resulted in knowledge now daily applied in soil treatment, in irrigation practices, in dealing with insect pests, in breeding new varieties of plants, in animal improvement, in better farm practices, and in better land-use planning. Research undertaken by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station has been outlined to solve specific problems facing Utah agriculture, among them the problems of irrigation, dry farming, range management and animal production. The prosperity of the state is dependent upon the success of these agricultural enterprises. Agricultural research should not, therefore, …

It has been observed that many ewes in Utah are somewhat under size when eighteen months old, the usual age for first breeding. It is a common experience for these ewes to produce much smaller lamb and wool crops than the older ewes.
