A Practicum In Behavioral Economics, Arthur J. Caplan
A Practicum In Behavioral Economics, Arthur J. Caplan
Applied Economics Faculty Publications
A Practicum in Behavioral Economics is a practice-based textbook covering the broad field of behavioral economics. Because behavioral economics is foremost a "test-and-learn" field of scientific inquiry that evolves according to experimental outcomes, so too should students test-and-learn. As such, the book's primary goal is to help students experience behavioral economics through participation in the same experiments and games that serve as the foundations for, and shape the contours of, the field. With the help of this book students learn behavioral economics firsthand, and in the process create their own experiences. They learn about themselves - about how they make …

Naturalistic Developmental Behavior Interventions (NDBIs) have a strong and growing evidence base. Yet, NDBIs are not implemented on a wide scale within early intervention programs for children on the autism spectrum. Potential reasons for the slow adoption of NDBIs likely stem from the differing theoretical orientations of behavioral and developmental sciences from which NDBI are derived, and a lack of training, knowledge, and support for implementing NDBIs within the behavior analytic community. In support of efforts to promote wide-scale implementation of NDBIs, we clarify their common features, discuss possible misconceptions, offer reasons why NDBIs should be widely implemented, and provide …

An inextricable link exists between humans and pollinators, with benefits that include ecosystem health and function and human food security. Bees, butterflies, moths, wasps, flies, and beetles are responsible for most the world's pollination services. Considering the mounting scientific evidence denoting global pollinator declines, there is a critical need to prioritize pollinators and the essential services they provide. This fact sheet provides information about integrated pest and pollinator management (IPPM), which goes beyond integrated pest management (IPM) to include proactive, preventive measures that consider pollinators as well as pests in horticulture management.

We conducted a range-wide investigation of the dynamics of site-level reproductive rate of northern spotted owls using survey data from 11 study areas across the subspecies geographic range collected during 1993–2018. Our analytical approach accounted for imperfect detection of owl pairs and misclassification of successful reproduction (i.e., at least one young fledged) and contributed further insights into northern spotted owl population ecology and dynamics. Both nondetection and state misclassification were important, especially because factors affecting these sources of error also affected focal ecological parameters. Annual probabilities of site occupancy were greatest at sites with successful reproduction in the previous year …

Exploring How We Teach
- Graduate teaching anxiety is a unique form of communication apprehension.
- Ignore your overactive amygdala. Teaching will not kill you.
- Teach with empath. Students are more afraid of you than you are of them.
- Don’t forget to breathe. A hospitable atmosphere is key to successful teaching.
- Institutions should better support their graduate student instructors.

Attitude Determination With Self-Inspection Cameras Repurposed As Earth Horizon Sensors, Atilla Saadat
Small Satellite Conference
Attitude determination for small satellites is a vital aspect of spacecraft operations. Earth Horizon Sensor(s) (EHS) are one of many sensors used in on-orbit attitude estimation. A conventional EHS captures infrared images of the Earth’s horizon and estimates the nadir vector in the spacecraft body frame, using the Earth’s curvature and prior knowledge of the spacecraft’s orbit. However, the design and test of new sensors increase mission cost and development time, while some spacecraft may not be able to accommodate such dedicated sensors. Therefore, it is beneficial if existing onboard optical sensors could be repurposed as effective EHS. The Space …

An Evaluation Of Potential Compute Platforms For Picosatellites, Ofir Cohen, Sivan Toledo
Small Satellite Conference
What compute platform should picosatellites use? CubeSats, classified as nanosatellites, are transitioning from microcontrollers that cannot run modern operating systems and modern programming environments to Linux-capable compute platforms. As electronics continue to shrink, picosatellite missions are likely to become more common, perhaps using the PocketQube standard. This paper characterizes the requirements that compute platforms for picosatellites should satisfy and analyzes in detail 4 potential platforms. We show that suitable hardware does exist, but that it is not yet supported well enough to allow small teams to use it in satellites or other specialized sensor nodes.
Indigenous Americans Became Red: Racism As Justification For Exploitation Of Native Americans, Robert V. Dodge
Indigenous Americans Became Red: Racism As Justification For Exploitation Of Native Americans, Robert V. Dodge
Journal of Indigenous Research
This article presents how an admixture of humans first arrived in the western world during the last Ice Age and spread throughout both continents, developing more complex cultures and agriculture, then civilizations. The arrival of Columbus began colonization by white European countries, justified by bringing the indigenous population Christianity and European civilization. Native people were dehumanized by white settlers out of greed for their land, which was said to have been used unproductively. A contention of early British colonists was that Indians were born white but their uncivilized life prevented them from remaining so, giving them a range of hues. …

Reversing The Gaze: Using Indigenous And Western Worldviews To Compare Coverage Of Climate Change And Indigenous Peoples In The News Media, Gina Mccrackin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The news media acts as an important conduit for shaping societal views of the socio-politics of climate change. While climate change will indeed affect everyone, it will not affect everyone equally. Indigenous peoples are among the populations whose well-being is threatened the most by climate change. International scholarship finds it is not uncommon for Indigenous cultures, communities, and perspectives to be underrepresented and misrepresented in Western climate change media. Research also indicates that fair Indigenous representation occurs when Indigenous peoples are the authors of news articles themselves. We evaluated the differences in discussions of climate change and environmental issues …

Investigating Cause-Specific Mortality Of Sheep To Determine The Impacts Of Carnivores On Domestic Livestock, Nathan Jacob Floyd
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Livestock and carnivores interact in ways that are considered conflict throughout the world. In the western United States, livestock are often grazed on public lands in close proximity to predators in their natural habitat, and can be killed as prey. Livestock losses to predators can threaten rancher’s livelihoods. Sheep and lambs are especially vulnerable to predators due to their small size and lack of defensive abilities. To reduce the impacts that predators have on livestock, it is important for ranchers and wildlife biologists to have an accurate understanding of how many livestock die and are killed by predators when grazing …

The invasive mustard species Sahara mustard (Brassica tournefortii), garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) and elongated mustard (Brassica elongata) negatively impact a variety of ecological systems across the state of Utah. The distribution of these species in Utah is relatively limited at the current time. If prompt action is taken, it may be possible to contain and manage these species before irreparable ecological and agricultural damage occurs. For this reason, all three mustards are listed by the State of Utah as weeds of high priority for management.
This project tested multiple strategies to determine effective species-specific …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Dairy cattle have lower dry matter intake (DMI) on pastures thus leading to less weight gain and milk production than feedlot cows. This study was conducted to determine whether different dairy breeds are better adapted to lower or higher quality pastures as measured in DMI and feed efficiency. The eight treatments consisted of Jersey, Holstein, Holstein-Jersey crossbreds, and 3-breed crossbreds (Montbéliarde-Swedish Red-Holstein) heifers on grass monocultures and grass-BFT mixtures. We observed greater DMI on grass-BFT mixtures. Among breeds, Holstein had the greatest DMI, then the two crossbreds, and Jersey had the least. Feed efficiency was most favorable for Jersey, less …

Sustain Water Conservation Behaviors Using Nonparametric Ranking And Social Marketing, Mahmudur Rahman Aveek
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Circulation of water use feedback and conservation messaging are strategies implemented to reduce water demand on a short-term (seasonal) basis. Often considered a less impactful strategy than other tactics such as price increments and usage restrictions, authorities mostly use feedback in informational campaigns with a focus to apprise users about their water use. Such conservation programs have had limited success that has been attributed to the fact that the information provided with the feedback campaigns was generic and did not motivate users enough to sustain their water-saving behaviors. However, the advent of disaggregation technologies that can provide appliance-wise water use …
