The Comparison Of Bacteriophage Sensitivity Of Staphylococcal Isolates From Turkeys, Turkey Processors, And Dairy Workers, Daryl Eugene Peterson
The Comparison Of Bacteriophage Sensitivity Of Staphylococcal Isolates From Turkeys, Turkey Processors, And Dairy Workers, Daryl Eugene Peterson
Biology
There have been several surveys made throughout the State of Utah that indicate the presence of staphylococcal synovitis in many of the turkey flocks. Bagley (1949) and Blommer (1950) indicated that from 1947 to 1949, there was a widespread occurrence of the disease throughout the State. Dr. M. L. Miner (1960), Head of the Department of Veterinary Science (Utah State University), indicated that staphylococcal synovitis in turkeys has actually been continuous in Utah since the late nineteen-"thirties." Staphylococcus aureus was found by Prahl (1891) to be the etiologic agent of this synovitis in geese. Synovitis may occur in many other …
Population Structure Of Peromyscus Maniculatus In Two Areas In Green Canyon, Cache County, Utah, John O. Sullivan
Population Structure Of Peromyscus Maniculatus In Two Areas In Green Canyon, Cache County, Utah, John O. Sullivan
Biology
Mammalogists in recent years have demonstrated an increased interest in the population dynamics of small mammals. Many small mammals are nocturnal and consequently are difficult to observe directly. A technique of live-trapping and marking is the most feasible method of studying such animals (Blair 1942; Calhoun and Casby, 1958). This permits the consideration of individual animals. The recognition of individuals contributed to the development of other techniques used in the interpretation of small mammal populations. The "home range" concept discussed by Burt (1943) and Stickel (1954) and the "center of activity" method as described by Hayne (1949) also contribute to …
The Morphology And Cultural Characteristics Of Bovine Cecal Trichomonads, Emron A. Jensen
The Morphology And Cultural Characteristics Of Bovine Cecal Trichomonads, Emron A. Jensen
Biology
No extensive investigation has been made of the trichomonads living in the cecum of cattle. Two species of trichomonads found in the intestinal tract of cattle have been described. Trichomonas bovis was described by Pavlov and Dimitrov (22). Trichomonas enteris was described by Christl (5). The descriptions given were not complete in that no mention of parabasal bodies was made and specimens stained by methods other than iron-hematoxylin were not described.
Hormone Content Of Subcellular Fractions Of Beef Anterior Pituitary Tissue, D. Reed Jensen
Hormone Content Of Subcellular Fractions Of Beef Anterior Pituitary Tissue, D. Reed Jensen
Biology
For some time the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland has been known to occupy a commanding position in the hierarchy of the endocrine system, and consequently has been the focus of intensive investigation. Subsequent to progress in the cytological identification of cell types in the anterior lobe, and with the knowledge that various hormones are released by the anterior lobe, it became the ambition of investigators to determine the cellular site of each hormone. The concensus was that the physiology of the gland could not be fully understood unless a relation was established between its cellular morphology and the …

The Semantics Of Stress And Pitch In English, George A. Meyer
The Semantics Of Stress And Pitch In English, George A. Meyer
Faculty Honor Lectures
Have your ears, not to mention your sensibilities, and your reverence for long established familiar rhythms and meanings been quite rudely jolted?
If each individual present here were to read these well-known lines from the printed page, or recite them from memory, I'm sure that you would, in each case, almost invariably reproduce them with the same stress, pitch, and rhythm patterns. There is comfort and relaxation of mind in rolling out the familiar phrases, with the stresses, relaxation from stress, and variations in pitch, that make them full of meaning.
Contrariwise, when you heard them spoken as I read …

The Life Cycle And Pathogenicity Of Eimeria Auburnensis, Wayne Norris Clark
The Life Cycle And Pathogenicity Of Eimeria Auburnensis, Wayne Norris Clark
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Coccidiosis in cattle is caused by microscopic one-celled sporozoa belonging to the order Coccidia and the genus Eimeria. Coccidiosis is a common disease of young calves that weakens or kills them, but the disease also occurs in older animals. Eleven species have been reported in cattle of the U.S.A.(Davis and Bowman, 1956). Of this number only two species, Eimeria bovis(Hammond et al., 1946) and Eimeria zurnii(Davis and Bowman, 1957) have been proven pathogenic for cattle, but except for Eimeria alabamensis(Davis et al., 1955) no experimental work has been done on other species.
An Introduction To The Ethology Of The Uinta Ground Squirrel (Citellus Armatus), David F. Balph
An Introduction To The Ethology Of The Uinta Ground Squirrel (Citellus Armatus), David F. Balph
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study describes behavior of the Uinta ground squirrel (Citellus armatus) in a free-living population. Its objective is to provide basic behavioral information on a small mammal which can fill in part of the gaps in our knowledge of behavior and social organization of the vertebrates. This would contribute to the long-term goal of viewing the progressive evolutionary changes in behavior from lower forms to man.
An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey
An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The problem of what kinds of music provide the most meaning for the young child has long been a concern of the author. It arises not only out of close experience with young children, but also out of a concern for the responsibility of providing them with meaningful aesthetic experiences. From this background of experience the problem is not purely an academic one. Its first and ultimate concern is an experiential one. Because it arises out of this particular background, the analysis of the problem and its study is less concerned with academic and scientific validity than might otherwise have …
Essential Amino Acid Composition Of A Balanced Chick Diet, Donald Christensen Dobson
Essential Amino Acid Composition Of A Balanced Chick Diet, Donald Christensen Dobson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The scientific balancing of diets has resulted in a series of studies to determine a standard for amino acid adequacy of a chick ration. These studies have shown that some amino acids are required in a chick diet more than others; they are termed "essential amino acids". Proteins used in formulating rations vary widely in essential amino acid content. Because of this variation, it can no longer be said that a diet with so much protein (N x 6.25) is adequate to meet the chick's need for optimum performance. Many papers have been published showing the results of experiments for …

Studies On The Relationship Of The Redside Shiner (Richardsonius Balteatus) And The Longnose Sucker (Catostomus Catostomus) To The Cutthroat Trout (Salmo Clarki) Popluation In Yellowstone Lake, Kenneth E. Biesinger
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Biologists have been concerned about the presence of longnose suckers (Catostomus catostomus) and redside shiners (Richarsonius balteatus)and their effect on the cutthroat trout population in Yellowstone Lake. This investigation was made to determine the distribution and certain interactions of these species with cutthroat trout in Yellowstone Lake. The effects of the presence of lake chub (Hybopsis plumbea) and longnose dace (Rhinichtys cataractae) are considered to a lesser extent.
Deviations In Serum Proteins Associated With Eimeria Bovis Infections In Calves And Some Related Immune Reactions, Paul R. Fitzgerald
Deviations In Serum Proteins Associated With Eimeria Bovis Infections In Calves And Some Related Immune Reactions, Paul R. Fitzgerald
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Bovine coccidiosis is a serious threat to the economy of the cattle industry in the United States. In 1954 the United States Department of Agriculture reported that over $10,000,000 was lost annually as a result of mortality and morbidity in cattle due to this parasite (1). These losses alone amounted to more than one fourth of the total loss in cattle due to parasitism.
The Teaching Machine As A Study Aid At The College Level, John R. Cragun
The Teaching Machine As A Study Aid At The College Level, John R. Cragun
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One of the most interesting and challenging problems to confront those interested in the learning process in recent years is the entire area of the self-instructional device, or "teaching machine." The idea of the teaching machine is not new, for Pressey (49) in 1926 wrote concerning a device he had developed, and at the same time indicated that he had had such a device in mind for "a number of years." After this introduction by Pressey, the teaching machine movement lay dormant for several years with only an occasional article written that had any direct relationship to this area. This …
A Description Of The Policies And Procedures Of Retail Feed Dealers In Utah, 1958, Orson B. Roper
A Description Of The Policies And Procedures Of Retail Feed Dealers In Utah, 1958, Orson B. Roper
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The retail feed industry has grown continually in importance during the past 60 years. Increased population has placed ever greater demands upon food production to feed our nation's people. During 1968, the average American consumed 80 pounds of beef, 63 pounds of pork, 8 pounds of veal, 4 pounds of lamb, 26 pounds of chicken, and 11 pounds of lard. This amounted to an annual per capita consumption of 188 pounds of red meat. With 173 million people to feed, vast quantities of livestock must be produced, finished, and marketed to satisfy our nation's needs.

Studies On Venison Quality: Flavor Studies; Effect Of Methods Of Thawing, Kind And Level Of Fat, And Degree Of Doneness, Grace J. Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Venison represents an important resource in this area. The average number of deer killed in Utah during hunting season of the ten-year period, 1940 to 1950, was over 50,000 animals annually according to the Utah State Fish and Game Department. For the period from 1950 to 1960 this figure has increased to over 100,000 animals. In terms of dressed weight, 100,000 animals would yield an estimated 8,000,000 pounds of meat. Neighboring states also produce large numbers of deer. This pictures venison not only as an important resource but as one rapidly increasing in importance.
Before the recent advent of locker …
The Hydrogen Peroxide Catalase Treatment Of Milk For Swiss Cheese Manufacture, Theodore Ricks Kowallis
The Hydrogen Peroxide Catalase Treatment Of Milk For Swiss Cheese Manufacture, Theodore Ricks Kowallis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Various temperatures and concentrations of the hydrogen peroxide catalase treatment of milk were studied in an attempt to discover the optimum temperature and concentration that would destroy unfavorable organisms and yet allow favorable ones to grow. The Federal Food and Drug Administration in their November, 1959, Definitions and Standards of Cheeses and Cheese Products states that "the amount of the hydrogen peroxide solution used shall be such that the weight of the hydrogen peroxide added thereby does not exceed 0.05 percent of the weight of the milk treated." Within the maximum level allowed, it was found that in day old …

James Mellor: English Convert And Handcart Pioneer - A Biography, Edna J. Gregerson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
For many years the descendants of John and James Mellor -- a large family who have made contributions to the cultural and educational activities of their various communities -- have been desirous of preserving for their posterity, and others, a record of the Mellors. Several years ago Amy Mellor Howe initiated the project by compiling and editing the first Mellor History. The foreword in her book wherein she "...hoped that the information and data herein contained may form the nucleus for further research..." served as the incentive to continue the project.
It is planned to incorporate the following biography into …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Naturalists for many years have known that birds sing most at dawn and at dusk, but to which of many physical variables they are responding has not been completely determined. This problem has taken on importance in the field of wildlife management because calling rate has been used as an index of abundance for numerous game birds, namely the Pheasant, Phasianus colchicus (Kimball, 1949); the Mourning Dove, Zenaidura macroura (McClure, 1939); the Bobwhite Quail, Colinus virginianus (Bennitt, 1951; Rosene, 1957): and the Woodcock, Philohela minor (Pitelka, 1943).
