Sentence Final Particles In Bisu Narrative, Kirk Roger Person Dec 2000

Sentence Final Particles In Bisu Narrative, Kirk Roger Person

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Particles are a vital component of many Asian languages. Nonetheless, they typically receive little treatment in grammatical studies. This may be due in part to the theoretical orientations of generative grammar which, intentionally or accidentally, can tend to skew data collection and analysis toward theory-predicted sentence alignments (Chu 1998, Chan 1999). In addition, the exact meaning and usage of many particles can be anything but obvious. Even educated native speakers often claim that particles are not “true words” and have no “real” meaning. This dissertation seeks to understand the inner workings of sentence final particles in the Bisu language of …

A Discourse Analysis Of The 1998 United States Senate Candidates' Pre-Election Debates, Deborah Ann Johnson-Evans Aug 2000

A Discourse Analysis Of The 1998 United States Senate Candidates' Pre-Election Debates, Deborah Ann Johnson-Evans

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Every two years, candidates for national-level public office participate in pre-election debates as part of their campaign. In debates, candidates attempt to distinguish themselves from their opponents and persuade the electorate to vote for them. Many researchers claim that debates are simple candidate performances orchestrated by the media, and discount the candidates' discourse as rehearsed sound bites and the candidates' interactions are simply “politics as usual.” The sense of being normal is what invites us to study the discourse that occurs in a situation imbued with the presentation of legitimated political power between individuals who seek legislative power. The present …

Attitudes Of Native English-Speaking Professors Toward University Esl Students, Shirley A. Wright Aug 2000

Attitudes Of Native English-Speaking Professors Toward University Esl Students, Shirley A. Wright

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study focuses on native English-speaking business professors to explore issues of stereotyping and error gravity in terms of university ESL (English as a Second Language) students. Specifically, this dissertation has four goals: (1) to discover what types of judgments business professors make about students, (2) to determine whether they make judgments about students based on written language samples, (3) to discover whether these judgments vary according to various grammatical error types in written language samples (whether an error hierarchy obtains for written grammatical errors), and (4) to explore what linguistic variables might influence those judgments. On the basis of …

Estimating Change Over Time From Aggregate Samples Plus Partial Transition Data, Chien-Pai Han, D. L. Hawkins May 2000

Estimating Change Over Time From Aggregate Samples Plus Partial Transition Data, Chien-Pai Han, D. L. Hawkins

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

As such, the paper has two basic thrusts. The first is that to obtain efficient estimates of change measures (e.g. of transition probabilities) based on aggregate data, auxiliary data will in general be needed; several potentially useful auxiliary sampling schemes are discussed. The second thrust is the manner in which estimates from the such varied sampling schemes can be combined to achieve such efficient estimates. Since it either directly or indirectly suggests many possible longitudinal study designs, the paper necessarily cannot provide real examples of all (or even most) of the study designs considered. Indeed, the main point here is …

Banzhaf Permission Values For Games With Permission Structure, Rene Van Den Brink May 2000

Banzhaf Permission Values For Games With Permission Structure, Rene Van Den Brink

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

A game with a permission structure describes a situation in which cooperation possibilities in a cooperative game with transferable utility are limited because there are players that need permission from other players before they are allowed to cooperate. In the conjunctive approach it is assumed that every player needs permission from all its direct superiors. In the disjunctive approach it is assumed that each player only needs permission from at least one of its direct superiors. Both approaches yield different modified games which take account of the limited cooperation possibilities. Applying the Banzhaf value to these modified games yields allocation …

School of Architecture Student Projects - Archive

Design work from the 2000 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Casino. Katherine Galpin. An indoor skiing attraction is the enticement to lure gamblers to the casino and hotel, and set it apart from competing casinos. Spatial, visual, and visceral excitement is essential for Las Vegas, and key to the success of any project. Lifts arrive at the top of a torqued-formed meandering enclosure containing three separate ski trails. The trails are divided into beginners, intermediate and advanced, determined by the steepness and relative difficulty of twists and turns. At the bottom …

Etnografía De Trabajadores Informales En Un Barrio De Inmigrantes Mexicanos En El Silicon Valley, Christian Zlolniski Jan 2000

Etnografía De Trabajadores Informales En Un Barrio De Inmigrantes Mexicanos En El Silicon Valley, Christian Zlolniski

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Publications - Archive

This article describes a set of informal activities engaged in by Mexican immigrants in a poor district of San Jose, California. Based on ethnographic field research, the study posits that the informal economy in Mexican immigrant communities does not constitute a labor niche of subsistence activities for workers excluded from the formal sector, or a set of jobs generated by an ethnic economy. On the contrary, it serves as a complement to the income generated by unqualified work in the formal sector, in which most workers are inserted, while in other cases, it represents an advantageous alternative form of work. …

A Simple Vaccination Model With Multiple Endemic States, Christopher Kribs, Jorge X. Velasco-Hernandez Jan 2000

A Simple Vaccination Model With Multiple Endemic States, Christopher Kribs, Jorge X. Velasco-Hernandez

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

A simple two-dimensional SIS model with vaccination exhibits a backward bifurcation for some parameter values. A two-population version of the model leads to the consideration of vaccination policies in paired border towns. The results of our mathematical analysis indicate that a vaccination campaign φ meant to reduce a disease's reproduction number R(φ) below one may fail to control the disease. If the aim is to prevent an epidemic outbreak, a large initial number of infective persons can cause a high endemicity level to arise rather suddenly even if the vaccine-reduced reproduction number is below threshold. If the aim is to …

African-American And Latino Conceptualizations Of The Role And Value Of Community Colleges: Results From A Study Of High School Students And Counselors, Barbara Tobolowsky, Charles L. Outcalt, Patricia M. Mcdonough

Using qualitative analysis and a Bourdieuian framework, authors investigated perceptions held by southern California African American and Latino high school students and their counselors regarding community colleges. Community colleges were found to be ambiguous assets, used by some students to enhance academic qualifications, but viewed by others as institutions of last resort.

Faculty Tiering And Academic Inbreeding: One Institution's Relationships And Realities, Adrienne E. Hyle, Debra J. Blanke

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Faculty Publications - Archive

Like inbreeding, if the proliferation of faculty tiering is problematic for academe, this institution is promoting faculty tiering, but at a lower rate than national trends. But, inbreeding and faculty tiering appear to be related, with more inbred faculty in lower tiered positions.
