Depression can affect the lives of all persons and can have especially profound implications on those with cognitive limitations; however, depression need not be an insurmountable roadblock to employment for persons with intellectual disabilities. Cognitive interventions - such as life story approach, socio-cognitive, and rational emotive behavior therapy-can be effective for litigating problems with depression among those with cognitive limitation including employment-related barriers due to depression. This article reviews how counselors can use cognitive interventions' behavioral and cognitive components to assist those with intellectual disabilities with depression.

Attendant Care And Spinal Cord Injury: Usage Patterns And Perspectives For Those With Life Care Plans, Tanya Rutherford-Owen, Irmo Marini

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

The provision of attendant care services is one of the costliest services needed by many individuals following a spinal cord injury (SCI). The current study examined consumption patterns of 55 adults with SCI who had a life care plan developed. Respondents were asked about various aspects of attendant care including number of hours utilized, satisfaction, level and type of care, (i.e. unpaid care versus private hire), received prior to and following life care plan development and settlement. Respondents provided open responses to explain reasons for satisfaction and dissatisfaction with attendant care. Results indicated more respondents received attendant care services following …

A Survey Of Speech-Language Pathologists: Long-Term Speech Therapy Needs For Patients Within Three Neurological Conditions, Kara J. Ayala, Irmo Marini, Karen Luckett, E. Lisette Blanco

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

Forty-seven speech-language pathologists (SLPs) completed a written survey designed to obtain their opinions regarding the speech-language pathology needs of patients presenting with communication deficits following traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular accident and cerebral palsy. Results indicated that over one-half of the SLPs in the study cited the most common reason that speech therapy is stopped is due to lack of insurance coverage, not because the patient reached maximum improvement. After discharge from services, 78-92% of SLPs affirmed that their patients would have benefitted from ongoing speech-language treatment if insurance limitations were not a consideration. In many instances, therapy was recommended for …

Employment Outcomes Among Individuals With Visual Impairments: The Role Of Client Satisfaction And Acceptance Of Vision Loss, Song-Jae Jo, Roy K. Chen, John F. Kosciulek

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

This study examined the relationship of client satisfaction with the vocational rehabilitation (VR) process and acceptance of vision loss with respect to employment outcomes among former VR clients with visual impairments. Participants were 128 clients of the Michigan Commission for the Blind (MCB) whose cases were closed between fiscal years 2003 and 2004. The results of a logistic regression analysis indicated that participants who reported higher levels of client satisfaction and who focused on their remaining assets (e.g., functions, abilities) after vision loss were more likely to be employed at the time of case closure than their counterparts who did …

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a potentially disabling condition which adversely affects psychosocial functioning in the lives of many people. Life Satisfaction Among People With Progressive Disabilities, Roy K. Chen, Nancy M. Crewe

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

This study investigated the life satisfaction among 218 individuals with progressive disabilities, who were recruited through the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Participants completed questionnaires containing several scales measuring predictor and outcome variables. Regression analyses were performed to analyze the quantitative data. The results indicated that 49% of the variance in life satisfaction among individuals with neuromuscular and neurological diseases was explained in the regression model. The best predictors of life satisfaction were the level of acceptance of disability, hope, spiritual well-being; age, sex, marital status, and employment status. This study suggests the importance of understanding …

A Survey Of Physical Therapists: Long Term Therapy Needs For Persons With Severe Disabilities, Irmo Marini, Karen Luckett, Eva Miller, E. Lisette Blanco

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

Sixty-three physical therapists participated in a survey designed to obtain their opinions regarding long-term and on-going future therapy recommendations for patients with spinal cord injuries, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, traumatic brain injuries, cerebral vascular accidents, cerebral palsy, and severe burns. Overall, therapists indicated these patients needed on-going therapy due to a loss or impairment of motor skills, ambulation skills, and loss or impairment of self-care skills. The primary reason reported for patients not returning to physical therapy for on-going treatment following their acute care was lack of insurance coverage or end of insurance benefits. This study outlines the implications for life …

Attitudes Of College Students Toward People With Disabilities, Wonsun (S.) Seo, Roy K. Chen Jan 2009

Attitudes Of College Students Toward People With Disabilities, Wonsun (S.) Seo, Roy K. Chen

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

The current study sought to explore attitudinal differences in college students toward people with disabilities (PWD) based on their demographic backgrounds and levels of prior contact. Participants were 311 undergraduate and graduate students at a large public university in the Midwest. Using the Attitudes Towards Disabled Persons Scale, Form-O (Yuker & Block, 1986) and the Contact with Disabled Persons Scale (Yuker & Hurley, 1987), a moderate positive correlation between attitudes and levels of contact was found (r = .302, p < .001). Significant differences in the mean scores of the ATDP were observed for different demographic groups. A subsequent ANCOVA indicated that levels of prior contact were influential on attitudes towards PWD. Implications for rehabilitation practice and future research are discussed.

The Physical And Psychosocial Health Status Of Clients With Spinal Cord Injury Awarded Damages In Litigation, Irmo Marini, Eva Miller

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

As the specialization of life care planning continues to evolve, a greater emphasis is occurring from both within the discipline and externally for empirically driven data to support life care planner opinions. One area remaining unresolved pertains to life care planners’ knowledge of how, or if, their life care plan has been implemented post-settlement. A related area pertains to the daily physical and psychosocial health issues of persons with spinal cord injury which can impact the development of their life care plan. The present pilot study explored injury related characteristics and the post-settlement expenditures of former life care plan clients …
