Coastal microbial contamination is a major threat to public health especially in urbanized estuaries such as Tampa Bay, because elevated Enterococci concentrations can indicate fecal pollution, which can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses including diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. This study investigated how infrastructure and environmental conditions influence Enterococci concentrations across different areas of Tampa Bay watershed, which is home to 3 million people, and visited by 5 million more each year. A multiyear dataset of over 6,600 Enterococci measurements from Tampa Bay Waterkeeper and the City of St. Petersburg Coastal Water Quality Monitoring Program was analyzed using spatial and statistical approaches. …

Traditional disaster planning strategies often rely on broad countywide approaches that fail to address neighborhood level needs. Identifying communities with overlapping social vulnerability and physical risks can inform more equitable preparedness interventions. To identify neighborhoods with overlapping social vulnerability and coastal flooding risk in Hillsborough County and inform targeted preparedness interventions for vulnerable populations based on physical and socioeconomic risks, Geographic Information Systems mapping was used to overlay 16 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Social Vulnerability Index indicators with coastal flooding risks to isolate 36 high priority census tracts. The North Atlantic is a volatile region with low iron availability, where diatoms make up a majority of the phytoplankton. Due to iron’s low supply and high demand, it is often retained within the system and reused through iron recycling. Iron recycling helps predict fluctuations in diatom biomass, which directly impacts the biological carbon pump, transporting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the deep ocean. Estimating recycling rate allows for comparisons to other regions that have previously been studied creating a better understanding of the ocean-climate system and how different environmental factors influence the climate. Deposition of atmospheric aerosols is a major source of bioavailable trace metals such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) to surface waters. Such aerosol deposition occurs through two modes: (1) dry deposition, or the settling of dry aerosol matter onto the open ocean, and (2) wet deposition, the delivery of solubilized aerosols during rain events. Although the effect of dry deposition on trace metal delivery to the oceans is reasonably well-studied, the influence of wet deposition remains extremely understudied. Trichodesmium is a free-living, marine cyanobacterium that acts as a biological nitrogen fixer, capable of using typically unavailable dissolved nitrogen gas. It is responsible for producing up to half of the usable nitrogen that is necessary for the survival of marine organisms and environments. Researching the abundance of different nitrogen-fixing species allows for a greater understanding of the importance of nitrogen fixation in certain environments. Specifically on the West Florida Shelf (WFS), where nutrient levels are low, it is hypothesized that nitrogen fixers support a significant portion of primary productivity. Sea-ice melt strongly influences the coastal waters of Antarctica by lowering surface salinity, reducing vertical mixing, and changing MLD (mixed layer depth). These changes can affect phytoplankton biomass, particle formation, and carbon export. This poster examines how meltwater, and mixed layer depth relate to fluorescence, particle abundance, and particle biovolume in the Weddell Sea region of the Western Antarctic Peninsula. CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) casts from the Polar Rapid cruise were used to analyze temperature, salinity, density, and fluorescence across multiple transects, and stations. Nitrogen is unusable by most organisms but is an essential nutrient for building life. Nitrogen fixers in the ocean, also known as diazotrophs, can produce bioavailable forms of nitrogen for other organisms to use from dissolved nitrogen gas. The West Florida Shelf is of particular interest for research on nitrogen fixers because it is generally oligotrophic, yet diazotrophic activity is hypothesized to increase regional productivity. Nutrient pollution from urban stormwater and agricultural runoff drives eutrophication in coastal wetlands, threatening the ecological function of ecosystems that communities depend on for water quality, flood resilience, and habitat. Floating treatment wetlands offer a nature-based intervention, but conventional planting media provide limited nutrient adsorption capacity and little opportunity for design optimization at scale. This study investigates whether biochar, a porous, high-surface-area carbon material, can be incorporated into extrudable biocomposites to enhance ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate adsorption in floating wetland applications, while remaining safe for sustained contact with wetland plant roots. Necropsies are vital for providing researchers with more information on the underlying conditions that cause disease and death in wildlife. A standard herpetological necropsy, like any necropsy, requires one to look objectively at each specimen, without preconceived expectations as to the cause, beginning with thorough internal and external examination of organs and tissues. This summer, I conducted 15 Chelonian (turtle and tortoise) necropsies. Species included gopher tortoise (n=11), and seral freshwater turtle species (n=4). Beyond gross examination, I collected cloacal/oral swabs, liver, lung, kidney, spleen, and brain for potential testing. Most were in good condition. We found a range of …

Early identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains challenging because many clinically relevant social, emotional, and communication behaviors are difficult to capture during brief clinical encounters. Electrocoagulation (EC) is a promising alternative to conventional chemical coagulation for decentralized drinking water treatment because it generates coagulants on-site , reducing the need for chemical transportation and storage in remote communities. Nitrogen pollution poses serious risks to human and ecological health, driving toxic algal blooms, degrading fisheries, and threatening communities that rely on clean water resources, making sustainable nitrogen removal technologies essential. This study evaluates whether zeolite—a naturally porous, cation‑adsorbing mineral with high NH₄⁺ capacity—can be biologically regenerated through nitrification and denitrification, eliminating the costly chemical regeneration typically required for long‑term use. Flexible membrane wings appear throughout both natural and engineered flyers — parachutes, sails, birds, and bats — and are known to confer favorable aerodynamic characteristics through deformation in response to the surrounding flow. To date, flexibility and porosity have largely been studied in isolation, yet in a poroelastic membrane the two are coupled: as the membrane extends under load, its pores stretch with the surface. All living organisms share a fundamental biological drive to survive through adaptation. In drinking water systems, pathogens like E. coli utilize survival mechanisms to withstand the chemical disinfectants designed to eliminate them. While treatment with free chlorine or monochloramine successfully stops bacteria from multiplying into colonies, many cells respond to this oxidative stress by shifting into a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state. A previous project at Cardiff University developed a low-cost, field-deployable inertial measurement unit (IMU) system for estimating knee-joint kinematics during rugby lineout lifts and landings. Validation against laboratory-based measurements demonstrated strong static accuracy, excellent temporal agreement, high repeatability, and adequate dynamic accuracy for the intended application, establishing a foundation for field-based biomechanical monitoring. Nonprofit food banks rely on rotating, minimally trained volunteers to make complex food sorting decisions, yet lean operations research rarely accounts for the cognitive limits these volunteers face on their first shift. This study proposes a Volunteer Information Processing Framework, grounded in memory and cognitive load theory, arguing that sorting errors stem from an “encoding gap”: volunteers have no prior long-term memory of category or expiration rules and must decide from scratch under working-memory constraints. Population aging has placed increasing pressure on retirement systems through declining fertility rates, increasing life expectancy, and rising old age dependency ratios. Although the United States and Italy face similar demographic challenges, they operate under different retirement and pension structures. This study synthesizes evidence by comparing the retirement and pension systems of the United States and Italy to evaluate how country addresses the challenges of population aging and to identify policy strategies that may improve long-term sustainability. Dual language learners (DLLs) represent one of the fastest-growing populations in the United States, and many continue to receive English-language instruction with limited bilingual language support (Lindholm-Leary, 2022). Because oral language development is associated with later academic outcomes (Spencer & Petersen, 2020), evidence-based bilingual oral language interventions are needed, particularly in underserved schools where staffing and resources are limited.
