Three Theoretical Approaches To Lemkin’S Definition Of Genocide, Jonathan Hobson
Three Theoretical Approaches To Lemkin’S Definition Of Genocide, Jonathan Hobson
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This paper is an exploration of genocide prosecutions since the inception of the term in 1944 by Raphael Lemkin, its legal definition by the United Nations in 1948, and the eventual establishing of the International Criminal Court in 1998. The paper is in three parts. The first part examines the history of genocide legislation, particularly the international legal frameworks established since Lemkin first devised the term in 1944. The second part details, for the first time, the extent of genocide prosecutions to date. To do so, it employs material from various international criminal tribunals, the International Criminal Court, national courts, …

Legible Testimonies: Raphaël Lemkin, The Victim’S Voice, And The Global History Of Genocide, Charlotte Kiechel
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This article offers a new portrait of Raphael Lemkin, as a historian of mass violence. It argues that, in contrast to recent characterizations that focus on Lemkin’s methodological amateurism, Lemkin was in fact highly attentive to the “Historian’s Craft.” Moreover, he was invested in employing a specific approach in writing his global History of Genocide. This approach revolved around his interest in psychology and frequently depended upon his psychologically attentive readings of testimonies. After detailing Lemkin’s psycho-cultural approach, this article compares his use and readings of victim testimony in his writings on mass violence in Western and non-Western societies. …

American Converts To Islam: Identity, Racialization, And Authenticity, Patrick M. Casey
American Converts To Islam: Identity, Racialization, And Authenticity, Patrick M. Casey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Working within a social identity theory model, which posits that identities gain or lose salience depending on the situation and the actors, this study brings into focus the identity management of Americans who have converted to Islam. More specifically, this study of American Muslim converts seeks to understand how the authenticity of their religious identities is challenged and affirmed by others and themselves. Thirty-nine in-depth interviews were examined and interpreted using the insights of narrative analysis and racialization theory. The first finding is that although converts may tell a variety of different stories about how and why they converted to …
Sexual Assault And Robbery Disclosure: An Examination Of Black’S Theory Of The Behavior Of Law, Caitlyn N. Muniz
Sexual Assault And Robbery Disclosure: An Examination Of Black’S Theory Of The Behavior Of Law, Caitlyn N. Muniz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The majority of research on victim decision making has focused narrowly on reporting to police neglecting other ways in which victims seek help after a victimization experience. Similarly, this research also focuses on only one crime at a time, typically sexual assault, or focuses broadly on categories of violent crime. This dissertation aims to explore variations in victim help-seeking by examining and comparing various combinations of formal disclosure. Moreover, this study compares two distinctly different yet comparable interpersonal violent crimes: sexual assault and robbery. In so doing, this study employs the Theory of the Behavior of Law to examine whether …
"Keep It In The Closet And Welcome To The Movement": Storying Gay Men Among The Alt-Right, Shelby Statham
"Keep It In The Closet And Welcome To The Movement": Storying Gay Men Among The Alt-Right, Shelby Statham
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The fundamental questions this project aims to answer are 1) how the alt-right engages in storying the sexual, specifically the “homosexual” character 2) the ways that broadly circulating ideas about masculinity shape movement boundary work processes, and 3) the work that this storying is doing for the alt-right in the context of American white patriarchy. Broadly, two characters were storied on r/altright: The Degenerate and the Substandard Ally. First, the Degenerate is a pedophile, a diseased sexual hedonist, and a Jewish-led weapon set on destroying the white race. The image of the Degenerate is produced through the mobilization of anti-Semitic …
Social Constructionism And Cultivation Theory In Development Of The Juvenile “Super-Predator”, Elizabeth R. Jackson-Cruz
Social Constructionism And Cultivation Theory In Development Of The Juvenile “Super-Predator”, Elizabeth R. Jackson-Cruz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The myth of the “super-predator” offender was adopted by newspaper media in the mid-1990s characterizing “violent”, urban, and minority juvenile offenders. The phrase originated from newspaper headlines of the 1980s and 1990s, but limited research has identified whether this con-struct predated DiIulio and Fox’s crime surge prediction. This study sampled juvenile crime news items from The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times (N=2,008) 1985-1995 with defined search criteria of juvenile actors, “violent” juvenile crime, and/or juvenile drug crime. A descriptive analysis of the data determined reporting trends sought for a “period effect” caused by the …

“The Most Muscular Woman I Have Ever Seen”: Bev Francisperformance Of Gender In Pumping Iron Ii: The Women, Cera R. Shain
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The question of what constitutes femininity has been widely debated, not only in gender studies, but also in the broader social world. A venue for this debate is the 1985 documentary, Pumping Iron II: The Women, in which gender and femininity in particular become part of the central plot of the film when Bev Francis, a woman bodybuilder more muscular than any other competitor, enters the competition. While feminist scholars have analyzed gender and sport from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives, little attention has been paid to female bodybuilding in particular. To fill this gap, this thesis will examine the …
Meaning And Monuments: Morality, Racial Ideology, And Nationalism In Confederate Monument Removal Storytelling, Kathryn A. Delgenio
Meaning And Monuments: Morality, Racial Ideology, And Nationalism In Confederate Monument Removal Storytelling, Kathryn A. Delgenio
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis I examine the reproduction of nationalism and white supremacy within Confederate monument removal (CMR) storytelling, and the ways collective identity and emotions are implicated within these reproductions. Using reader generated CMR narratives published in a Southern newspaper, the Augusta Chronicle, I conduct narrative analysis in order to identify key story elements, moral arguments, and cultural codes present in the public CMR debate. Findings indicate that two sharply contested narratives emerge during this debate, one calling for the protection of Confederate monuments and one calling for the removal of Confederate monuments. Further, though these contested stories produce opposing …
Off-The-Grid In An On-Grid Nation: Household Energy Choices, Intra-Community Effects, And Attitudes In A Rural Neighborhood In Utah, Eileen Smith-Cavros, Arianna Sunyak
Off-The-Grid In An On-Grid Nation: Household Energy Choices, Intra-Community Effects, And Attitudes In A Rural Neighborhood In Utah, Eileen Smith-Cavros, Arianna Sunyak
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
This research is an investigation of the perceived positive and negative aspects of off grid living in a middle to upper-class neighborhood in rural Utah in which no public utility grid was available for connection. Off-grid living is defined as unconnected to a public utility power grid, water, or sewer system. In the researched community, all individuals lived off-grid on minimum twenty-acre lots of land with single-household dwellings. We used surveys with closed and open-ended questions to qualitatively explore the local social effects (from individual attitudes to group identity to household economics to conservation attitudes) off-grid living had on individuals …
A Comparative Study On The Amount Of Tips Left By The Generations Based On The Personalized Bill Types, A. Celil Cakici, Alaiddin Kosar
A Comparative Study On The Amount Of Tips Left By The Generations Based On The Personalized Bill Types, A. Celil Cakici, Alaiddin Kosar
Journal of Global Business Insights
Tip is the monetary amount that consumers voluntarily leave for the quality of the service they get. Whether a tip is left or not, and the amount of the tip left may result from different demographic and characteristic features of consumers. This study was conducted to determine the amount of tip left by the generations based on the personalized bills. Based on three different personalized bill types for a dinner for two people at a mid-quality restaurant, it was attempted to determine whether the costumers left tips or not, and if they did, how much was the amount. The data …

Locating A New Collegiate Entrepreneurship Program, A Framework For A University Campus, Douglas H. Carter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
University Entrepreneurship Programs reside is a variety of places within a Campus Community. As a relatively new university, the question arises as to where such a program should reside? Should such a program be relegated to a single college or is there an opportunity for a cross-disciplinary approach to its establishment? With limited resources, it is imperative to make an educated and informed decision so as to be good stewards of limited funding.

Online Mmorpg Games In China: Player Motivations And The Mediating Role Of Flow, Jiaxin Liu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) are gaining popularity and are being used widely in China. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the motivation and the experience of MMORPG players, and the effects of playing MMORPG through an extensive online survey of more than 300 Chinese participants (n = 305). Specifically, the findings support the complex relationship between variables, including the direct effects on motivation and flow, on the time the players invest in MMORPG games, and the mediated effects on motivations through flow. In addition to the importance of direct and indirect effects on …
An Unfulfilled Promise: The Genocide Convention And The Obligation Of Prevention, Zachary A. Karazsia
An Unfulfilled Promise: The Genocide Convention And The Obligation Of Prevention, Zachary A. Karazsia
Journal of Strategic Security
This article addresses the under-theorized dual-mandate of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The Convention was drafted in the wake of the Holocaust and other Nazi genocidal atrocities committed during World War II. The primary mission of the Genocide Convention was to establish a uniform definition of this scourge, and insert its prevention and punishment into the list of obligations states hold within the current international legal regime. Based on the past 70 years, it is clear that the international community has overwhelmingly failed to uphold the Genocide Convention’s prevention mandate. The …
From Rigor To Vigor: The Past, Present, And Potential Of Inquiry As Stance, Elizabeth Currin
From Rigor To Vigor: The Past, Present, And Potential Of Inquiry As Stance, Elizabeth Currin
Journal of Practitioner Research
Over the years, practitioner research has been both marginalized and trivialized within the larger educational research landscape. This article challenges that exclusion by tracing the emergence and development of the inquiry stance construct. Understanding the origins of teacher inquiry can contribute to its cultivation and ultimately lend a necessary rigor—or better yet, vigor—to practitioner research. Indeed, inquiry as stance endures because it is far more than a best practice or ready-made technique. Deeply ontological and epistemological, an inquiry stance enables educators to transform their teaching for the sake of all learners in the face of an ever-changing educational landscape.

My Experiences With Body Image And Eating Disorders In Figure Skating, Emma M. Chinault
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
This is a personal reflection of my experiences with an eating disorder and body image issues that I have dealt with throughout my figure skating career. I reflect on body dysmorphia issues, my obsession with the scale, the realization that I had an eating disorder, and my journey to heal. These experiences, stories, pictures, and journal entries are used to show how relevant these issues are in the figure skating world and give hope and inspiration to other athletes that have gone through similar struggle. I discuss how these issues are prevalent throughout the sport of figure skating and discuss …
Factors Associated With Patient Trust In Primary Care Physicians In The United States, Emily Grace Lind
Factors Associated With Patient Trust In Primary Care Physicians In The United States, Emily Grace Lind
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
For a patient to efficiently communicate medical history and sensitive medical information, and to properly adhere to treatment plans put forward by his or her physician, a relationship of trust must be established. Data suggests that compassion and empathy shown by doctors, along with the encouragement they give their patients to play an active role in their treatment, contributes to the trust they earn. Outside the scope of the patient-physician interaction, multiple extrinsic factors play a role in the patients’ social trust of the physician and the institution of healthcare. This study aimed to gain a better understanding of areas …

Psychological Factors Related To Resilience And Vulnerability Among Youth With Hiv In An Integrated Care Setting., Tiffany Chenneville, Kemesha Gabbidon, Courtney Lynn, Carina Rodriguez
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
Approximately 22% of HIV diagnoses in 2015 occurred among youth aged 13–24. Much is known about the risk factors and psychopathology present in youth living with HIV (YLWH), however, relatively little is known about resiliency in this population. The current study sought to assess factors related to resilience and vulnerability among YLWH as well as the impact of psychosocial factors on these constructs using existing clinical data from an integrated care clinic serving YLWH in the southeastern United States. Data included findings from mental health screeners administered as part of the standard protocol of care for youth aged 13–24 including …

When It Comes To Moocs, Where You Are From Makes A Difference, Bahaa Gameel, Karin Gwinn Wilkins
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
Millions of learners have enrolled in MOOCs in the last few years. However, little is known about the essential skills students need to succeed in MOOCs. Even less is known about how country of origin or other aspects such as gender might affect these skills. By integrating the resources and appropriation scholarship with second-level digital divide research, this study considers skills used to engage ICTs with self-efficacy and locus of control among MOOC learners from five regions. Results from surveying 2882 learners who enrolled in five English and Arabic MOOCs reveal significant differences among learners from various regions. Based on …

How We Experience Eating Disorders: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Elise Hummel
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
There is very little existing qualitative research about the lived experience of individuals with eating disorders (ED) from the lens of a researcher who also identifies as a member of that community. To that end, this project asks: “What is the lived experience of having an ED? And how does my perspective as someone who identifies as having an ED inform my research process and findings?” In this thesis, I draw on feminist practices that recognize participants as collaborators and co-researchers, and I conduct open-ended interviews with four women who were diagnosed with, and sought treatment for, an ED. I …
