Are Increasing Test Scores In Texas Really A Myth, Or Is Haney's Myth A Myth?, Laurence A. Toenjes, A. Gary Dworkin

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Pass rates by Texas tenth-graders on the high school exit exam improved from 52 percent in 1994 to 72 percent in 1998. In his article "The Myth of the Texas Miracle in Education" (EPAA, August 2000) Professor Walt Haney argued that some part of this increased pass rate was, as he put it, an illusion. Haney contended that the combined effects of students dropping out of school prior to taking the 10th grade TAAS and special education exemptions accounted for much of the increase in TAAS pass rates. Relying on the same methodology and data that Haney used, we demonstrate …

Women In Managerial Positions In Greek Education: Evidence Of Inequality, Anastasia Athanassoula-Reppa, Manolis Koutouzis Jan 2002

Women In Managerial Positions In Greek Education: Evidence Of Inequality, Anastasia Athanassoula-Reppa, Manolis Koutouzis

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This article deals with the under-representation of women in managerial positions in Greece. While substantial progress has been made in terms of the legal framework that ensures equal rights to both men and women in the country, evidence shows that there are barriers that inhibit women from pursuing and taking such positions, resulting to covert discrimination.

Development Of An Aural Rehabilitation Cd-Rom, Sierra Macdonald Jan 2002

Development Of An Aural Rehabilitation Cd-Rom, Sierra Macdonald

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A need has been established for aural rehabilitation (AR) sessions throughout the years. The literature reviewed here demonstrates that new hearing aid users do benefit from a structured follow-up AR program. However, this need is often not met for a variety of patient and audiologist related factors. Therefore, an AR program that could be viewed at home has been suggested. I have developed a prototype for a CD-ROM based aural rehabilitation (AR) program. Included in the program are communication and speechreading strategies, which are the most prevalent materials in AR. The instructional and interaction portions of the prototype were created …

The Power-Discourse Relationship In A Croatian Higher Education Setting, Renata Fox, John Fox Jan 2002

The Power-Discourse Relationship In A Croatian Higher Education Setting, Renata Fox, John Fox

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Croatian higher education system's public space is researched through a critical analysis of a Croatian faculty's discourse. Representing a typical faculty social situation, two council meetings— recorded in minutes—are critiqued. Both meetings' minutes provide evidence of discourse strategies of deception used by faculty power holders to create an illusion of consent. We attribute the success of the deception to council members' ideas about the Faculty's groups/individuals, relations and issues related to the Faculty's hierarchy, their rank within that hierarchy, and their position within the Faculty's social network. To support our argument, we explore how the Faculty power holders' discourse is …

State-Mandated Testing And Teachers' Beliefs And Practice, Sandra Cimbricz Jan 2002

State-Mandated Testing And Teachers' Beliefs And Practice, Sandra Cimbricz

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

In this article, I examine the relationship between state-mandated testing and teachers' beliefs and practice. The studies reviewed suggest that while state testing does matter by influencing what teachers say and do, so, too, do other things, such as teachers' knowledge of subject matter, their approaches to teaching, their views of learning, and the amalgam of experience and status they possess in the school organization. As a result, the influence state-mandated testing has (or not) on teachers and teaching would seem to depend on how teachers interpret state testing and use it to guide their actions. ...

Behavioral And Other Human Ecologies: Critique, Response And Progress Through Criticism, Bruce Winterhalder Jan 2002

Behavioral And Other Human Ecologies: Critique, Response And Progress Through Criticism, Bruce Winterhalder

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This paper has three goals: (1) to define the anthropological subfield of human behavioral ecology (HBE) and characterize recent progress in this research tradition; (2) to address Joseph's (2000) critique of HBE from the perspective of an advocate of that field; and (3) to suggest features that make for effective criticism of research traditions. (1) HBE attempts to understand intra- and inter-societal diversity in human behavior as the product of species-wide adaptive goals which must be realized in highly diverse, socio-environmental circumstances. Theoretically, HBE draws selectively from neo-Darwinism and its cultural-evolutionary analogs, from micro-economics, and from elements of formal decision …

The Goal Of This Study Was To Examine Differences In The Psychological Characteristics Of Patients Admitted To The Hospital For Acute Or Chronic Myocardial Infarction (Mi) Or Unstable Angina (Ua). Depression, Anger, Anxiety, Curiosity, Defensiveness, Social Support, And Coping Were Evaluated For 165 Patients (86 Mi And 79 Ua), Who Were Tested On The Cardiology Stepdown Ward Of Tampa General Hospital. The Following Psychological Measures Were Administered To These Patients: The Beck Depression Inventory (Bdi), The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (Staxi-2), The Rationality/Emotional Defensiveness (R/Ed) Scale, The Adult Form Of The Coping Responses Inventory (Cri-Adult), The Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (Isel), The Illness Perception Questionnaire (Ipq), The State-Trait Personality Inventory (Stpi), And The Structured Clinical Interview (Scid-I) For The Dsm - Iv. Significantly More Chronic Patients Than Acute Patients Met Criteria For Depression As Measured By The Scid Following Admission To The Hospital, And More Ua Than Mi Patients Also Met These Criteria. However, No Differences Were Found Between The Acute Vi And Chronic Mi And Ua Patients Two Weeks Prior To Admission. Results Of This Study Also Indicated That Chronic Patients And Ua Patients Reported A Greater Frequency Of Illness Symptoms And Tended To Cope With Their Heart Disease Through Avoidant Strategies. Chronic Patients Endorsed Higher Levels Of State And Trait Anger Compared With Acute Patients, And Ua Patients Were Less Likely To Believe That Their Illness Could Be Cured Or Controlled (Control Of Cure) Than Mi Patients. Based On The Results Of This Study, It Appears That Avoidance Coping May Be An Insufficient Strategy For Addressing Negative Emotions Of Chronic Patients And Ua Patients. In Addition, Perceived Lack Of Control Over The Success Of Treatment May Be Related To Depression For Ua Patients. These Findings Have Important Implications For The Development And Implementation Of Interventions Designed To Address Perceived Control Over Treatment Effectiveness And Coping Skills For Negative Emotions In The Treatment And Rehabilitation Of Cardiac Patients., Gregory J. Spirakis Jan 2002

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the stability of hearing aid benefit, as measured by the Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit (APHAB; Cox & Alexander, 1995), between three months post hearing aid fitting and at next the annual audiological re-evaluation. The annual re-evaluation was at least, and as close to nine months as possible, after the previous audiological. The maximum time between the two evaluations was 18 months. Thirty-six hearing aid patients participated in this study. The participants were both male and female, and were fitted monaurally or binaurally with hearing aid(s). All participants had sensorineural hearing …
