Vision And Disease In The Napoleonic Description De L’Egypte (1809-1828): The Constraints Of French Intellectual Imperialism And The Roots Of Egyptian Self-Definition, Elizabeth L. Oliver
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study analyzes the travel conventions manifest in the engravings of the
thirty-volume
Description de l’Egypte produced as a result of the Napoleonic campaign
to Egypt in 1798 and published between 1809 and 1828. The first chapter examines the
discourse established on Egypt in travelogues throughout the eighteenth century prior to
the invasion of the country. I argue that the perceptions developed around the country
did not stem from actual experience, but from political and economic motivations that
cast Egypt in a light favorable for occupation.
I examine how this perception was challenged during the collapse of distance
between the …
Viva Wallace Tampa Latins, The Politics Of Americanization, And The Progressive Party Campaign Of 1948, Jared G. Toney
Viva Wallace Tampa Latins, The Politics Of Americanization, And The Progressive Party Campaign Of 1948, Jared G. Toney
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research deals with the presidential election of 1948 and the questions it raises concerning issues of ethnic identity and the experiences of working-class migrants in the U.S. South. Central to the discussion is the unprecedented success of third-party challenger Henry Wallace and his Progressive campaign in the immigrant enclaves of Tampa, Florida. Stigmatized by controversial foreign and domestic programs which drew disabling connections between Wallace and the Communist Party, the Progressive Party campaign hardly got its proverbial feet off the ground before falling victim to virulent criticism and widespread opposition. Carrying just over two percent of the votes nationwide, …
The True Picture Of The Indian—As Jackson Viewed It: The Portrayal Of Alessandro As An Atypical Native American, Carrie. Olin
The True Picture Of The Indian—As Jackson Viewed It: The Portrayal Of Alessandro As An Atypical Native American, Carrie. Olin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Helen Hunt Jackson wrote the sentimental novel,
Ramona, to call attention to social justice for Native Americans. This thesis presents a reconsideration and reevaluation of the novel, especially that of the Native American voice the novel presents, by recognizing the complexities of Native American literature and culture. Previous criticism of the novel focuses on the portrayal of Hispanics or the "real life" events, such as the shaping of Southern California, the "true" Ramona, or the life of Jackson. Since there is little critical debate of the text itself, this thesis initiates further exploration. An extensive review of the scholarship …

The Enthymeme’S Role In Modern Discourse, Ryan Meehan
The Enthymeme’S Role In Modern Discourse, Ryan Meehan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, I wish to demonstrate how enthymemic argument pervades modern discourse. First, I will define the enthymeme in Aristotelian terms and compare its qualities to its sibling, the syllogism. Next, I will attempt to demonstrate how the enthymeme functions, paying close attention to its psychological effects as well as analyzing how the media helps promote enthymemic discourse. Finally, I will propose a way that composition instructors can harness the idea of the enthymeme to facilitate critical thinking in the classroom. The purpose of the paper is to provide evidence that a rebirth of this classical term is in …
The Middle-Class Religious Ideology And The Underclass Struggle: A Growing Divide In Black Religion, Franklin Hills Jr.
The Middle-Class Religious Ideology And The Underclass Struggle: A Growing Divide In Black Religion, Franklin Hills Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The trajectory of religious phenomena has been to give a reflective, yet
formative understanding of the ethos endemic to a culture. Pursuant to this
thought, the ethos of African American religion can rightfully be described as a
religious sociological construct, mired in a myriad of changes. These changes
have had a profound effect on how African Americans relate to their God, their
world, and themselves. The chief aim of this enterprise is to chronicle the
transformation of Black Religion in the United States, noting the social and
economic factors that served synergistically to formulate its current mission. I
conclude that …
Chronic/Life Threatening Illnesses From The Perspective Of Latino Men, Melissa Sierra
Chronic/Life Threatening Illnesses From The Perspective Of Latino Men, Melissa Sierra
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Much of the research on illness focuses on how people, particularly white men, cope with chronic/life threatening illnesses often adopting a "sick role" identity. For Latinos this type of identity transformation is complex as there is no place for dependency and passivity in traditional depictions of Latino masculinity. Latino men take pride in their manhood. As a result, they have trouble accepting their illness and the sick role. They do not tend to take their illness seriously, nor are they comfortable admitting to others the seriousness of their illness. My research focuses on how Latino men renegotiate a sense of …
Image Restoration Theory: An Empirical Study Of Corporate Apology Tactics Employed By The U.S. Air Force Academy, Glen F. Roberts
Image Restoration Theory: An Empirical Study Of Corporate Apology Tactics Employed By The U.S. Air Force Academy, Glen F. Roberts
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Adverse relationships between an individual or corporation and its publics can destroy credibility, relationships, marketability, and economic welfare. As such, a genre of discourse is needed to help individuals and organizations respond to charges of wrongdoing. Therefore, the study of image restoration is worthwhile because it provides insight into an important function of our lives. For this thesis study, a content analysis was conducted of media releases and stories produced by the U.S. Air Force regarding a series of sexual assaults at the Air Force Academy in 2002. The purpose of the study is two-fold. First, it determines the image …
Gender Differences In Age Of Onset For Delinquency:Risk Factors And Consequences, Laura M. Gulledge
Gender Differences In Age Of Onset For Delinquency:Risk Factors And Consequences, Laura M. Gulledge
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The age of onset of delinquency has long been viewed as a primary indicator for further delinquency and criminality. However, studies on the risk factors for onset, and future delinquency have focused predominantly on males. The purpose of this study was to explore gender differences and similarities in risk factors for onset and frequency of arrest. The data used in these analyses were from a longitudinal study, Pathways to Adulthood: A Three Generational Urban Study, 1960-1994. Sixty-six percent (N=1,758) of the eligible children completed the final survey. Of these children, only 515 were used in this particular study because they …
Feminine Beauty And The Cancerous Beast: Appearance Management At The Cancer Hospital Salon, Andrea Wagganer
Feminine Beauty And The Cancerous Beast: Appearance Management At The Cancer Hospital Salon, Andrea Wagganer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
When we choose to alter or manipulate our physical appearance we also manage our presentation of self; we communicate to others about our identity. Salons are typical social spaces for women to engage in body-changing, enhancing or disguising practices and thereby manage their identity. The following ethnographic research explores the intersection of female cancer patients' who request salon services while undergoing appearance altering medical treatments and female cosmetologists who provide such services.
Over a period of 6 months, I volunteered weekly at Hannah's, a hairstyling salon located in a large cancer research and treatment hospital in southern Florida. The following …

Effects Of A State Mandated Policy (Site-Based Councils) And Of Potential Role Incumbents On Teacher Screening Decisions In High And Low Performing Schools, I. Phillip Young, Kimberly Miller-Smith
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Some states have viewed teacher selection as a means of improving student performance and have mandated the use of site-based teacher councils. To assess the utility of this legislative action, an experimental study was conducted. This study uses a 2X3X2 factorial design that varies state legislation, role of the decision maker, and academic performance of the school site. Credentials of hypothetical teacher candidates were evaluated as if screening for a vacant position, and evaluations were submitted to a MANOVA. Results indicate that legislated alterations in the teacher-selection process failed to have any substantial effects on outcomes in the screening of …

The Role Of Mental Health Problems In Explaining Violent Behaviors In Children And Adolescents Over The Lifecourse: An Exploratory Study, Denise Paquette Boots
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Juvenile violence is a phenomenon that consistently garners great attention in the media, the public, and across a multitude of academic disciplines. A growing body of literature in developmental and lifecourse criminology has called for innovative research to further investigate the causes and correlates of serious juvenile offenders. Toward this end, the present study uses prospective, longitudinal data from the Pittsburgh Youth Study (PYS) to gauge the temporal impact of childhood and adolescent mental health problems on the development of serious offending behaviors in boys. Borrowing largely from the work of Achenbach and colleagues (2001), data from parent and teacher …

An Ahp Framework For Balancing Efficiency And Equity In The United States Liver Transplantation System, Vijayachandran M. Veerachandran
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSRACT: Liver transplantation and allocation has been a controversial issue in the United States for decades. One of the main concerns in the allocation system is the trade-off between the two main objectives, efficiency and equity. Unfortunately, it is difficult to reach consensus on how to develop allocation policies that aim at balancing efficiency and equity, among transplantation policy makers, administrators, transplant surgeons and transplant candidates. Our research identifies and classifies the outcomes of liver allocation into two major categories, efficiency and equity, that are, often times, conflicting. Previous researchers did not consider how to balance outcomes in these two categories. …
Politics Of Environmentalism And Ecological Knowledge At The Intersection Of Local And Global Processes, Katja Neves-Graça
Politics Of Environmentalism And Ecological Knowledge At The Intersection Of Local And Global Processes, Katja Neves-Graça
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
This article scrutinizes the intersection of globalized and localized environmentalism in Lajes do Pico, Azores, Portugal, at the historical juncture when whale-watching superseded whale hunting in this village. In so doing, the article explains how localized environmentalism—including the ecological knowledges and practices of local inhabitants —was reproduced, learned, and transformed within the context of globalized environmental concerns, and vice versa. Using ethnographic materials I collected in Lajes do Pico between 1998 and 2000, I suggest that, rather than constituting two clearly distinct types of knowledge, through comparison and dialogical articulation local and scientific knowledge are typically locked in a process …

Implicit Sources Of Bias In Employment Interview Judgments And Decisions., Sharon Segrest, Pamela L. Perrewe, Treena L. Gillespie, Bronston T. Mayes, Gerald R. Ferris
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
This study empirically examined implicit sources of bias in employment interview judgments and decisions. We examined two ethnic cues, accent and name, as sources of bias that may trigger prejudicial attitudes and decisions. As predicted, there was an interaction between the applicant name and accent that affected participants' favorable judgments of applicant characteristics. The applicant with the ethnic name, speaking with an accent, was viewed less positively by interviewers than the ethnic named applicant without an accent and non-ethnic named applicants with and without an accent. Furthermore, modern ethnicity bias had a negative association with the favorable judgments of the …

Quantifying What Research Has Taught Us About Erp Projects: A Proposed Research Design, John J. Sullivan, Mela Wyeth, Wade M. Chumney
School of Information Faculty Publications
The worst kept secret in Information Systems (IS) might be that Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems possess enormous potential for mismanagement, unfulfilled expectations, and outright failure. While some organizations manage to report on-time schedules, intact budgets, and systems capable of providing measurable value to the organization, those that fall woefully short are much more prevalent. The objective of this research project is to focus on organizational reliability. Specifically, this paper will outline a proposed research design that will lead to the capability to quantify the impact of organizational factors on ERP projects. Those factors will be categorized in five broad …

Lean Manufacturers Transcendence To Green Manufacturing: Correlating The Diffusion Of Lean And Green Manufacturing Systems, Gary G. Bergmiller
Lean Manufacturers Transcendence To Green Manufacturing: Correlating The Diffusion Of Lean And Green Manufacturing Systems, Gary G. Bergmiller
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Scientific evidence of human impact on the natural environment, such as global warming, continues to mount. Green manufacturing systems that focus on minimizing environmental impact of manufacturing processes and products are ever more important to our sustainable future. Green manufacturing systems are slow to gain acceptance as manufacturers are focused on implementing Lean manufacturing systems, generally considered the most competitive manufacturing systems in the world.
In recent years, researchers and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have sought to "build a bridge" between Lean and Green manufacturing systems, in hopes that the rapid expanse of Lean can serve as a …

A Case Study Of A School Implementing A Constructivist Philosophy, Joseph C. Brown
A Case Study Of A School Implementing A Constructivist Philosophy, Joseph C. Brown
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Isaacson's (2004) dissertation chronicles the implementation of a constructivist instructional approach at Southwood Elementary School. Southwood's faculty experienced a change of principals, which the Tri-Partite Theory of Organizational Change and Succession, a theory of organizational entropy, predicts could lead to organizational entropy. This study examines the dynamics of the change in principal, as well as Isaacson's recommendation to study teachers' perceptions regarding the maintenance of the constructivist approach. This study answers three questions: 1) Are faculty still using constructivist strategies? 2) What are teacher perceptions regarding the maintenance and support of constructivist philosophy? 3) Is there congruence between what literature …
Folk Wiki: The Shared Traditions Of Folk Music And The Wiki Way, Phillip Mark Chamberlin
Folk Wiki: The Shared Traditions Of Folk Music And The Wiki Way, Phillip Mark Chamberlin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wiki is often perceived as representing a revolutionary break from conventional notions of authorship, writing, and textual history. Dialogues concerning Wiki tend to ignore the characteristics that Wiki shares with earlier forms of collaboration, particularly folk music. In both Wiki and folk music, content is often collectively shared and authored, even if specific individuals create and change the content. Many collaborators are anonymous, quasi-anonymous, or pseudo-anonymous, but the perception of this anonymity is, in both genres, problematic. Second, both Wiki documents and folk songs exist in the "Eternal Now," a seemingly perpetual state that makes these texts available for addition, …

Traumatic Loss And Transformative Life Experiences: The Lived Experience Of Green Cross Traumatologists Deployed To The New York City World Trade Center Disaster, Carron C. Cherrie
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This exploratory study examines the lived experience of Green Cross traumatologists deployed to the New York City World Trade Center disaster. The deployment took place five days after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The author was a member of a ten member advance team that provided crisis stabilization services to an international union in Lower Manhattan. Disaster Mental Health Services and community outreach were provided for a month. The purpose of the study was to describe in an anthropologically holistic perspective the lived experience of traumatologists, who as Americans were also affected by the terrorist disaster. Thirty-one traumatologists …
