Actual Schools, Possible Practices: New Directions In Professional Development, Rebecca Novick
Actual Schools, Possible Practices: New Directions In Professional Development, Rebecca Novick
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
There is increasing recognition that school reform and staff development are integrally related. Yet, despite a rich literature on adult learning and human development which supports teachers' need for a wide array of opportunities to construct their own understandings and theories in a collaborative setting, top down mandates have frequently left teachers out of the reform process. It is argued here that effective staff development should be tied directly to the daily life of classroom and grounded in the questions and concerns of teachers. ...

Developmentalism: An Obscure But Pervasive Restriction On Educational Improvement, J. E. Stone
Developmentalism: An Obscure But Pervasive Restriction On Educational Improvement, J. E. Stone
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Despite continuing criticism of public education, experimentally demonstrated and field tested teaching methods have been ignored, rejected, and abandoned. Instead of a stable consensus regarding best teaching practices, there seems only an unending succession of innovations. A longstanding educational doctrine appears to underlie this anomalous state of affairs. Termed developmentalism, it presumes "natural" ontogenesis to be optimal and it requires experimentally demonstrated teaching practices to overcome a presumption that they interfere with an optimal developmental trajectory. ...

Respite care is widely believed to be an important service for families raising a child with a disability. All caregivers need a break from time to time, and the need may be even greater when the caregiver is coping with the additional stress associated with a child's disability. A number of studies have demonstrated that respite care can improve family functioning (Cohen, 1982), reduce stress (Rimmerman, 1989; Wickler & Hanusa, 1990; Appoloni & Triest, 1983), and delay out-of-home placement (Cohen, 1982; Upshur, 1982) for families with a child who has a disability.

The Effects Of Source And Product Characteristics On Persuasion., Karin Braunsberger
The Effects Of Source And Product Characteristics On Persuasion., Karin Braunsberger
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
The purpose of this research was to test the "product and endorser feature congruence hypothesis." Thus, it was tested whether matching source expertise with credence attribute claims and source experience with experience attributes claims has a positive effect on consumers' cognitive responses as well as their attitudes toward the endorser and the ad. These effects were investigated for the following reasons: First, source expertise appears to have a significant impact on persuasion (McGuire 1969) and is distinguishable from source experience (Jacoby, Troutman, Kuss and Mazursky 1986). Thus, these constructs may have differential effects on persuasion. Second, credence and experience attributes …

Understanding How Family-Level Dynamics Affect Children's Development : Studies Of Two-Parent Families, James P. Mchale, Philip A. Cowan
Understanding How Family-Level Dynamics Affect Children's Development : Studies Of Two-Parent Families, James P. Mchale, Philip A. Cowan
Faculty Books
Despite advances in family and child research over the past decade, most studies continue to examine dyadic subsystems of the larger family system rather than the full family context. With few exceptions, empirical support for the utility of whole-family analysis in child development research remains to be established. This sourcebook draws together diverse studies of whole-family (2-parent) dynamics to explore the potential of this paradigm for understanding individual variability in children's early social and emotional development. Several chapters underscore the significance of coparental processes—behaviors between adults that include and involve the child. Other chapters assess patterns of cohesion, emotion, coordination, …
