Cinderella's Social Transformations, Rosemary Lutz
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
The tale of Cinderella has made its way around the world for centuries, yet this highly recognizable plot continues to be a popular contemporary theme: a young girl cast into suffering, treated maliciously, and subjected to privation eventually is summoned to a regal existence. We easily identify the Cinderella character even in the guise of a mermaid in the film Splash; as a factory worker, who lives in a dull and lifeless town which replaces Cinderella's traditional ashen hearth, in An Officer and a Gentleman; or as a prostitute whose trick turns out to be Prince Charming in Pretty Woman. …

Facing The Consequences: Identifying The Limitations Of How We Categorize People In Research And Policy, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn Steele
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Social policy researchers and policy rules and regulation writers have not taken advantage of advances in assessing ways in which social representations of ideas about people can convey alternative explanations of social life. Neglecting to consider representational practices has consequences including failure to mobilize and sustain alternative ideologies that reject narrow perspectives on families and communities. ...

The Effects Of High Median Age On Currency Of Resources In Community College Library Collections, Anna H. Perrault, Richard Madaus, Ann Armbrister, Jeannie Dixon, Rhonda Smith
School of Information Faculty Publications
In 1998, a comprehensive study was conducted of the monograph collections of the twenty-eight public community colleges in Florida. This article reports the findings of that study with respect to median age and currency of resources. The rationale for the interpretation of the findings in the Florida Community College Collection Assessment Project is congruent with the philosophy that college collections should emphasize the instructional and curricular needs of students and, therefore, that the collections should emphasize current resources rather than retrospective depth. The findings on median age from the Florida Community College study serve as an example for the discussion …

High School Staff Characteristics And Mathematics Test Results, Mark Fetler
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
This study investigates the relationship between measures of mathematics teacher skill and student achievement in California high schools. The results are consistent with the hypotheses that there is a shortage of qualified mathematics teachers in California and that this shortage is associated with low student scores in mathematics. ...
