Bats Of The Western Indian Ocean Islands, John O'Brien
Bats Of The Western Indian Ocean Islands, John O'Brien
KIP Articles
The natural colonisation of many remote oceanic islands by bats, including those of the western Indian Ocean, has been facilitated by their unique capability among mammals for powered flight. In the western Indian Ocean region, only the Malagasy islands of Madagascar and the Comoros archipelago have been naturally colonised by non-volant mammals. Despite their greater potential for inter-island dispersal, and thus gene transfer, endemicity of Chiroptera in the western Indian Ocean islands is high. Given their vulnerability to stochastic and anthropogenic disturbances, greater focus needs to be placed on investigating the demographic and ecological history of bats on Western Indian …

The Holistic Complementary Structure Of Western Bio-Medicine And Traditional Healing And Achieving Complete Health, Candace Gail Oubre
The Holistic Complementary Structure Of Western Bio-Medicine And Traditional Healing And Achieving Complete Health, Candace Gail Oubre
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Achieving complete health requires a deep understanding of complementary cultural competency sensitivity between physician and patient. This may include but is not limited to access to preventative health care resources, access to health educational resources and access to cultural healing resources, for example, shamans, Ayurvedic physicians, and herbal healers. Advocates of cultural competency emphasize great importance on knowledge of the patients' cultural background; however, the transcendence of this knowledge can be explained further through complementary cultural competency sensitivity. This is when the cultures of the physician and patient complement each other in terms of understanding what is in the patients' …

A Critical Study Of The Literature About Deforestation In The Brazilian Amazon, Samuel Morrill
A Critical Study Of The Literature About Deforestation In The Brazilian Amazon, Samuel Morrill
Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects
The purpose of this honors thesis was to summarize and analyze the competing positions about the causes and consequences of the continuing deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon based on the positions recently presented ( i.e, from 2000 to 2010) in published sources on the subject. This analysis of the competing positions on the causes and consequences of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has focused on and has been guided by a search for answers to two critical questions:
Which groups of people in the world benefit from the way in which the causes and consequences of deforestation in …

Development Of An Assessment Of Quantitative Literacy For Miami University, Rose Marie Ward, Monica C. Schneider, James D. Kiper
Development Of An Assessment Of Quantitative Literacy For Miami University, Rose Marie Ward, Monica C. Schneider, James D. Kiper
Numeracy
Quantitative Literacy is a competence as important as general literacy; yet, while writing requirements are seemingly ubiquitous across the college curriculum, quantitative literacy requirements are not. The current project provides preliminary evidence of the reliability and validity of a quantitative literacy measure suitable for delivery online. A sample of 188 undergraduate students from Miami University, a midsize university in the midwestern U.S., participated in the current study. Scores on the measure, were inversely related to statistical/mathematical anxiety measures, directly related to subjective assessment of numeracy, and did not differ across gender or year in school. The resulting measure provides a …

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects
There is very little research or information in regards to men’s college basketball staff positions. This study will focus on five positions on the University of South Florida men’s basketball team and explain what they do and whether it is necessary to the functioning of the basketball team. As a member of the University of South Florida men’s basketball team, I will work alongside these five positions and note their responsibilities and the amount of work that goes into upholding those responsibilities. I will also conduct an interview with each position as to gain any additional information that may add …
Ectoparasite Richness And Abundance On Three Species Of Neotropical Bats, May 2011, Roxanne Reiter
Ectoparasite Richness And Abundance On Three Species Of Neotropical Bats, May 2011, Roxanne Reiter
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Ectoparasitic arthropods can decrease the fitness or survival of their hosts by increasing host energy expenditure. Bats harbor many species of ectoparasites; host biology, grooming, and roosting habits can affect intensity of parasite infestation. This study assessed ectoparasitism on three species of Neotropical bats by Streblid batflies (Streblidae) and bat mites (Order: Acari). Bats were netted and ectoparasites identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible. Host species had a significant impact on ectoparasite richness and abundance (Two Way ANOVA, F = 41.25, df = 2, p < 0.0001). Anoura geoffroyi suffered the most intense overall parasitism and parasitism by Streblids, but Hylonycteris underwoodi hosted more mites and had a greater richness of mites per bat (Tukey’s HSD tests, p < 0.05). Carollia perspicillata suffered very low parasitism rates by all measures. Host sex did not appear to impact ectoparasitism across species or between males and females of the same species. Ectoparasitism is likely impacted by roosting dynamics, grooming habits, and density of individuals in the colony.

The Adaptive Function Of Leaf Fenestrations In Monstera Spp (Araceae) A Look At Water, Wind, And Herbivory, May 2011, Cassie Lubenow
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
A very important component of biodiversity in tropical forests is the vast variation in leaf morphology among different plant species. Leaf morphology is often a result of adaptations to the specific environmental conditions of a particular ecosystem or habitat. The Monstera genus of tropical plants in the Araceae family has very unique morphological leaf characteristics; it has large, deeply incised leaves with holes along the primary veins. There are many hypothesized adaptive functions of these holes, but no direct experimental studies have been completed to determine the functions they actually serve. This study directly tests the functional significance of the …

Fish Oil Concentrate Delays Sensitivity To Thermal Nociception In Mice, Jyothi M. Veigas, Paul J. Williams, Ganesh Halade, Mizanur M. Rahman, Toshiyuki Yoneda, Gabriel Fernandes
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Fish oil has been used to alleviate pain associated with inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. The anti-inflammatory property of fish oil is attributed to the n-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid. Contrarily, vegetable oils such as safflower oil are rich in n-6 fatty acids which are considered to be mediators of inflammation. This study investigates the effect of n-3 and n-6 fatty acids rich oils as dietary supplements on the thermally induced pain sensitivity in healthy mice. C57Bl/6J mice were fed diet containing regular fish oil, concentrated fish oil formulation (CFO) and safflower oil (SO) for 6 …

Combination Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid With Fish Oil Prevents Age-Associated Bone Marrow Adiposity In C57bl/6j Mice, Ganesh V. Halade, Md M. Rahman, Paul J. Williams, Gabriel Fernandes
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
The inverse relationship between fat in bone marrow and bone mass in the skeleton of aging subjects is well known. However, there is no precise therapy for the treatment of bone marrow adiposity. We investigated the ability of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and fish oil (FO), alone or in combination, to modulate bone loss using 12 months old C57Bl/6J mice fed 10% corn oil diet as control or supplemented with 0.5% CLA or 5% FO or 0.5% CLA+5% FO for 6 months. We found, CLA-fed mice exhibited reduced body weight, body fat mass (BFM) and enhanced hind leg lean mass …
Foraging Behavior And Risk Assessment Of Six Hummingbird Species In Monteverde, Costa Rica, May 2011, Emily Ellison
Foraging Behavior And Risk Assessment Of Six Hummingbird Species In Monteverde, Costa Rica, May 2011, Emily Ellison
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The predation risk allocation hypothesis (RAH) theorizes that animals display more anti-predator behavior in high-risk situations, and should spend less time foraging in high risk situations. Hummingbirds are risk sensitive foragers, and this study examines whether several different species of tropical hummingbirds can assess risk, supporting the RAH. Hummingbirds were presented with feeder location and view obstruction risk situations, and their preferences and foraging behaviors were used to determine their ability to assess risk. This study indicated that hummingbirds have the ability to assess risk, although species differed in their ability depending on the type and severity of the risk …
Optimal Foraging In Leafcutter Ants (Atta Cephalotes) Selection Of Leaves Based On Proximity To The Nest, May 2011, Robert O. Snowden
Optimal Foraging In Leafcutter Ants (Atta Cephalotes) Selection Of Leaves Based On Proximity To The Nest, May 2011, Robert O. Snowden
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The foraging tendencies of Atta cephalotes, a leaf-cutting ant, have been widely studied. Optimal foraging theory dictates that ants should maximize rate of energy intake while minimizing costs by harvesting from suitable food sources closer to the nest. However, actual foraging patterns are more disparate and do not always reflect optimal strategies. Here I measure harvesting rates and recruitment speeds at different distances from the nest of A. cephalotes colonies by offering six leaf disk samples every 15 minutes at 5, 10, and 15 meters from the nest entrance. Harvesting rate was significantly higher closer to the nest, with 54% …
Foliage Dwelling Insect Composition In Three Stages Of Forest Regeneration, May 2011, Isa Betancourt
Foliage Dwelling Insect Composition In Three Stages Of Forest Regeneration, May 2011, Isa Betancourt
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO 2002) estimated that secondary forest make up 60% of all tropical forests. By definition, that means that a majority of tropical forests have gone through succession in the recent past. In the present study I looked at differences between foliage dwelling insects at different stages of succession. A total of eight sweep samples were taken from a regenerating field (RF), a new growth forest (NGF), and an old growth forest (OGF) in San Luis, Puntaranes, Costa Rica to assess the diversity and evenness during the dry season and at an altitude of around 1200 …

An Education Production Function For Botswanan Secondary Schools, Nathan T. Moore
An Education Production Function For Botswanan Secondary Schools, Nathan T. Moore
9th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Celebration
This study investigates the determinants of educational outcomes in the developing world by estimating an education production function for Botswanan secondary schools. Education plays an essential role in the development process, as a high-quality educational system is the only means by which a developing country expands its stock of human capital. Additionally, education contributes to the improvement of health outcomes and political institutions. Sub-Saharan Africa is perhaps the region of the world for which efficiency in education is most important, as policymakers are faced with the combination of a rapidly growing population, low levels of education, and limited resources. Without …
Economic Determinism Of Reproductive Ideologies, Kristen L. Brustad
Economic Determinism Of Reproductive Ideologies, Kristen L. Brustad
9th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Celebration
While having children is an individual or couple based decision, general population trends help to indicate correlations between certain factors and fertility. Among these factors is the state of the economy. For an individual deciding on potential children, the expected costs can help to explain whether or not a person knowingly and purposefully plans to have children. The concept of this research is to combine the qualitative data on personal ideologies about having children with the quantitative data on how the economy has impacted these fertility decisions. On the most basic level, this research aims to gain insight on the …
Fish Oil Decreases Inflammation And Reduces Cardiac Remodeling In Rosiglitazone Treated Aging Mice, Ganesh V. Halade, Paul J. Williams, Merry L. Lindsey, Gabriel Fernandes
Fish Oil Decreases Inflammation And Reduces Cardiac Remodeling In Rosiglitazone Treated Aging Mice, Ganesh V. Halade, Paul J. Williams, Merry L. Lindsey, Gabriel Fernandes
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Clinical studies suggest that rosiglitazone (RSG) treatment may increase the incidence of heart failure in diabetic patients. In this study, we examined whether a high corn oil diet with RSG treatment in insulin resistant aging mice exerted metabolic and pro-inflammatory effects that stimulate cardiac dysfunction. We also evaluated whether fish oil attenuated these effects. Female C57BL/6J mice (13 months old) were divided into 5 groups: (1) lean control (LC), (2) corn oil, (3) fish oil, (4) corn oil + RSG and (5) fish oil + RSG. Mice fed a corn oil enriched diet and RSG developed hypertrophy of the left …

“Natural Disaster Plans And How They Need To Be Fixed”, Christopher Poitevien
Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects
Natural disasters have affected our history, affect our present, and will affect our future. Because of this our world needs to adapt. But disaster plans already established should include certain aspects that would limit the amount of damage inflicted by the disaster and the number of lives that are lost. The problem with the literature is that it does not cover what should be done to decrease the number of lives lost and limit the damage that could occur. The first thing that it needs is disaster epidemiologists. These are scientists that go back into the history of the area …
