The Effect Of Distraction On Emotion-Based Communication Behaviors, Twisha Nadella Jul 2026

The Effect Of Distraction On Emotion-Based Communication Behaviors, Twisha Nadella

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

As technology becomes increasingly integrated in daily activities, there are growing concerns for the effects of multi-tasking within the workplace. It is important to consider how communication efficiency may be impacted by dual-task situations. Therefore, understanding the potential outcomes that distraction may have on language production is valuable in determining optimal working conditions for effective use of emotional communication. This dual-task study was designed to understand the effects of distraction on emotion-based communication behavior. A driving task was utilized as the means of distraction in this experiment, while the concurrent negotiation task was analyzed to understand how emotional language was …

Biased Agonism At Β2-Adrenergic Receptor For Therapeutic Precision, Miranda J. Miranda, Jinay Mehta, Zara Kazi, Pravarakhya Pottigari, Praveen Muthusamy, Ritesh Palla Jul 2026

Biased Agonism At Β2-Adrenergic Receptor For Therapeutic Precision, Miranda J. Miranda, Jinay Mehta, Zara Kazi, Pravarakhya Pottigari, Praveen Muthusamy, Ritesh Palla

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

Immune and inflammatory disorders occur when the immune system becomes overactive, leading to ongoing inflammation and tissue damage. The β2-adrenergic receptor (β2-AR), found on many immune cells, helps regulate how immune cells move and respond. Traditional β2-AR drugs activate multiple signaling pathways at the same time, which can lead to inconsistent effects and off-target side effects such as increased heart rate, tremors, and reduced receptor sensitivity over time. This highlights the need for more targeted approaches. This systematic review examined whether biased agonism of β2-AR can selectively activate specific signaling pathways to better control immune responses and improve treatment outcomes. …

Comparative Evaluation Of Surgical And Non-Procedural Intervention On Fibroid Burden In Women Aged 30-50, Skylar Skupienski, Hiba Boumahdi, Vienna Nguyen, Brianna Casasu, Maimouna Dembele, Ryan Singh

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors arising from the uterine wall that commonly affect women aged 30–50. While surgical options such as hysterectomy and myomectomy remain the most prevalent treatments, emerging non-procedural approaches including dietary and lifestyle strategies show promise as alternatives. However, the comparative effectiveness of surgical versus non-procedural interventions on fibroid size and symptom burden remains unclear.

To compare the effectiveness of surgical, hormonal, and non-procedural interventions, including dietary and lifestyle strategies, on fibroid size reduction and symptom burden in women aged 30–50. A literature review was conducted using PubMed with search terms including “Uterine Fibroid Management,” “Dietary Interventions,” …

Although previous research has examined hormonal influence, the specific effects of sex hormones in asthma and COPD remain unclear. This study aims to evaluate how testosterone and estrogen influence inflammation, disease severity and exacerbation frequency in adults with asthma and COPD. A comprehensive literature review using PubMed with keywords (asthma OR COPD) AND (sex hormones OR estrogen OR testosterone) AND (inflammation OR disease severity OR exacerbations) yielded 145 articles. After screening …

Effects Of Modified T-Cells On Treatment Response Of Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Landon Lam, Ana Luiza Macedo, Jayla Comes, Addison Morris, Madison Hansen, Leyli Hasanli, Tanish Guin Jul 2026

Effects Of Modified T-Cells On Treatment Response Of Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Landon Lam, Ana Luiza Macedo, Jayla Comes, Addison Morris, Madison Hansen, Leyli Hasanli, Tanish Guin

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a prevalent childhood malignancy; although survival for standard cases is high (85%), prognosis for relapsed or refractory disease remains poor, with survival rates at 50%. Innovations in immunotherapy, including Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy, address these relapse rates. CAR-T therapy harvests and modifies T-cells from the patient to target and eliminate cancer cells. This review evaluates the clinical impact of modified T-cells on treatment response, analyzes the management of associated toxicities, and identifies biological barriers to sustained remission in pediatric populations. The review was conducted using databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar …

Cardiometabolic Diseases And Immune-Responsive Metabolic Enzymes: Roles Of Lipoxygenases (5, 12, 15), Cyclooxygenases (1, 2), And Cytochrome P450, Shayla Pham

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

Cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) encompass interrelated disorders involving cardiovascular dysfunction and metabolic dysregulation. Lipoxygenase (5-, 12/15-LOX), cyclooxygenase (COX-1/2), and cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzymes regulate fatty acid metabolism and inflammatory signaling, significantly contributing to CMD pathogenesis. This review synthesizes recent evidence on LOX, COX, and CYP450 pathway crosstalk and evaluates their therapeutic and biomarker relevance in clinical cardiometabolic disease. A comprehensive PubMed literature search identified studies examining LOX, COX, and CYP450 enzymes inflammatory and metabolic pathways linked to CMD. Inclusion criteria were limited to human and animal studies published from 2010 to 2025, focusing on cardiac function, enzyme activity, or clinical outcome. …

Resistance Is Futile: Using Star Trek Fanfiction To Reimagine Milton's Paradise Lost, Ezra J. Steffen Jul 2026

Resistance Is Futile: Using Star Trek Fanfiction To Reimagine Milton's Paradise Lost, Ezra J. Steffen

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

“Resistance Is Futile: Using Star Trek Fanfiction to Reimagine Milton’s Paradise Lost” is a panel that discusses my reimagination of Milton’s epic for Dr. Emily Jones’ Selected British Authors class. There, I drew parallels between characters in P.L. and characters in Star Trek: The Original Series. Using a Gnostic lens, I reframed temptation as a positive and necessary action. I painted Sarek, Spock’s dad, as an imperfect god who stood in the way of Spock’s growth. Spock, acting as a hybrid of Adam and Eve, gets tempted to stray from his father by Leonard “Bones” McCoy. In my published fanfiction, …

Vertebrate Diversity In Cave Systems Of Colombia: An Approach Based On Environmental Dna Metabarcoding Analysis, Rita Daniela Martinelli Marín, Carlos Andres Lasso, Francesco Sauro, Susana Josefina Caballero

International Journal of Speleology

There is currently limited knowledge of the biological communities inhabiting cave ecosystems in South America. This study examines the vertebrate community composition of 21 caves across diverse subterranean ecosystems in Colombia using environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis. Water was collected from water bodies inside caves and subterranean systems in six of the eight speleological regions of Colombia in eight departments. Water was filtered manually through a 0.8 m pore size filter and preserved with Longmire solution. A 170-base pair (bp) fragment of the 12s mitochondrial gene specific for vertebrate identification was amplified by PCR and sequenced by Illumina (metabarcoding). Data corresponding …

Teaching Evelina With Digital Humanities, Hilary Havens Jun 2026

Teaching Evelina With Digital Humanities, Hilary Havens

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Digital humanities, an interdisciplinary field that applies digital methodologies and technologies to the humanities, is an excellent lens through which to approach the eighteenth century.  I integrate digital humanities tools and workshops alongside primary source readings in all of my eighteenth-century British literature classes to help students better understand those texts and the world in which they were created.  In my upper-level undergraduate class on late eighteenth-century literature, I teach four digital humanities tools to students, two of them (StoryMapJS and Voyant) in connection with Frances Burney’s Evelina (1778). These tools train students how to uncover historical and geographic contexts …

Teaching A Stand-Alone Course On Burney, Lorna J. Clark Jun 2026

Teaching A Stand-Alone Course On Burney, Lorna J. Clark

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This essay outlines a stand-alone course on Frances Burney, suggesting that she offers a good entry point into eighteenth-century studies. Given that she wrote in so many genres—novels, plays, journals, and letters—such a course avoids the narrowness which often marks a single author course. In twelve weeks, the course studied ten works: four novels, five plays (three comedies and two tragedies) and a selection of journals and letters. The latter describes well-known figures in Burney’s social and literary networks in eighteenth-century London and leads to discussion of techniques of the epistolary, of diary-writing and of women’s life-writing. Burney’s novels are …

Reading Burney’S Mastectomy Letter: Presentist Thinking And Personal Responses In The Classroom, Heather Meek Jun 2026

Reading Burney’S Mastectomy Letter: Presentist Thinking And Personal Responses In The Classroom, Heather Meek

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Frances Burney’s mastectomy letter, in its graphic and detailed depiction of the operation she underwent without anesthetic in 1811, does not always lend itself immediately to standard, scholarly classroom discussion. It tends, rather, to incite unusually intimate responses, as well as conversations about medicine and health today. In my teaching of the letter in literature courses at Université de Montréal over the course of the past 13 years, I have found that students are inclined to seize upon the subject of breast cancer as especially contemporary in its relevance and to share their own anecdotal knowledge of the disease. I …

Lifelong Learning: Approaches To Teaching Frances Burney’S The Wanderer To Adults, Miriam Al Jamil Jun 2026

Lifelong Learning: Approaches To Teaching Frances Burney’S The Wanderer To Adults, Miriam Al Jamil

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

The construction of a course for adult learners who are not studying for a qualification or credits but rather for enjoyment and engagement with learning for its own sake, requires an approach centered on needs which may not be entirely academic. Drawing on students’ individual life experiences while avoiding assumptions based on familiarity with the material shapes the course and offers many benefits. The essay is based on teaching Workers Education Association (WEA) courses and proposes the structure of a literature course on Frances Burney’s 1814 novel The Wanderer. It selects thematic content which resonates with older learners, such …

The Wanderers: Teaching The Literature Of Migration And Exile, Linda Zionkowski Jun 2026

The Wanderers: Teaching The Literature Of Migration And Exile, Linda Zionkowski

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

In our current global landscape, exile—or forced, often permanent migration—appears a central rather than tangential experience, being driven by armed conflict, environmental destruction, economic collapse, and political repression. The climate on many university campuses reflects students’ awareness of and concern for the situation of displaced populations, and this awareness has influenced political discourse and political action inside and outside the classroom. My course titled “The Wanderers: Teaching the Literature of Migration and Exile” begins with  Frances Burney’s narration of exilic experiences in her life writings and The Wanderer. Burney’s texts offer a conceptual foundation for exploring instances of physical …

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This short essay introduces a Concise Collection special issue on teaching Frances Burney. The collection brings together a range of texts and approaches to them and demonstrates that Burney can be successfully taught to students outside of the graduate context.

The Secret(S) To Success: Genlis’S Guide To Raising A Foolproof Daughter, Jennifer Law-Sullivan Jun 2026

The Secret(S) To Success: Genlis’S Guide To Raising A Foolproof Daughter, Jennifer Law-Sullivan

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Abstract: “The Secret(s) to Success: Genlis’s Guide to Raising a Foolproof Daughter”

Stéphanie-Félicité de Genlis’s Adèle et Théodore ou lettres sur l’éducation, first published in 1782, is an epistolary conduct novel that examines the question of how best to educate girls. Attempts to answer the question were exceedingly in vogue in the late 18th century and can be traced back to Fénelon’s 1681 Traité de l’éducation des filles. Genlis’s novel offers a robust critique of previous education treatises, Rousseau, and a patriarchal society that did little to educate girls and mothers. She couches her critique in a …

Light-Driven Zonation And Community Structure Of Aerophytic Microalgae In A Tropical Limestone Cave (Gua Tempurung, Malaysia), Wan Maznah Wan Omar, Mohammad Basri Eshak, Luthfiana Aprilianita Sari, Zulaihat Hamza Abdullahi, Yusuf Abdullahi

International Journal of Speleology

Cave ecosystems host specialized phototrophic biofilms structured primarily by light availability, yet quantitative assessments of aerophytic microalgal community organization in tropical limestone caves remain limited. This study investigated spatial variation in the structure of aerophytic microalgal communities across four ecologically distinct zones (entrance, transition, penetration, and low light) of Gua Tempurung, Malaysia. Stratified sampling was conducted during three seasonal periods. Dominant phototrophic morphospecies were identified using microscopy, and community composition was analyzed in relation to key environmental variables. Twenty-three dominant microalgal morphospecies were recorded across the cave gradient. Cyanobacteria constituted the major component of both richness and abundance, followed by …

Examining The Referral Pathway For Black Families Evaluated Through The Early Steps Program, Zelda Fleming Jun 2026

Examining The Referral Pathway For Black Families Evaluated Through The Early Steps Program, Zelda Fleming

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research indicates that for children with or at risk for developmental delays, early intervention services are associated with improvements in academic and cognitive skills by the time they reach kindergarten (Atkins et al., 2020; Litt et al., 2017). Untreated developmental delays are linked to early school failure and social and emotional problems (Sher et al., 2020). Black children are 5 times less likely to receive early intervention services when compared to their White peers (Barnard-Brak et al., 2021; Feinberg et al.,2011). Thus, they often do not have the opportunity to receive early intervention services. The literature in this area suggests …
